How much can an auditors attitude affect the audit? Along with teaching auditing skills and objectivity, should we also be teaching trainee auditors to be aware of their body language too?

Part of an auditors responsibility is to make the auditee feel comfortable. If the auditor has a bad attitude and becomes sarcastic, it only forces the auditee to become more defensive and much more difficult to work with. I've had situations like this in the past. I would immediately contact the Client following the audit and charge a formal complaint. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't, but I refused to let that auditor audit us again.

Auditors bad attitudes can affect seriuosly the reputation of a company. I still remember a terrible experience we had with an external auditor, he didn`t apply a good criteria during the audit, minor finding were considered as critical, we tried to convince him, they were just minor finding based on the standard but at the end the audit ended with 3 critical findings which in reality they were minor. During the close meeting there was a big discussion between the external auditor and the top management of our company, however auditor kept his position and submit his report that way. To make the story short our company decided to switch to another company.

Your case was totally different in comparison of mine where I experienced an amazing external auditing process. First, the auditor conducted an open meeting where he shed more light on the main objective, scope and purpose of his visit stating that the most important point about his external auditing is not to detect the non-conformities but to help develop and improve our QHSE management system. We started talking about my education, particularly, work experience in relation to QHSE management system. He gave me an impression that he would be by my side during the auditing process to learn and develop my skills. Perhaps, one thing that I really like in his behavior is that his expressions, comments and feedbacks were not criticizing negatively my performance of QHSE related activities. They were mainly encouraging me to defend and discus my ideas and activities. I do really think that he is considered to be a professional auditor because, during the auditing process and whenever he detected any non-conformity, he attracted my attention asking carefully selected questions to direct my attention to the fact that it was non-conformity. In that he was not addressing the non-conformity in a direct manner, but he was motivating me to think about the situation to be considered as non-conformity.

It is real correct that an auditor has to possess corresponding characters in auditing province, provided in some occasion some of auditors create some corruptible environment to allow poor auditing. hence their work become biased and could obviously lack standard

Auditor's bad attitude can affect the audit. I agree with Mark Christy that it can make the auditee to become more defensive and much more difficult to work with instead of making them feel comfortable. That is why, auditors must be carefully selected by following the guidelines. He must be professional, objective, polite, diplomatic, open-minded & mature. He must be able to maintain self-control, stay constructive, know how to depersonalize conclusions and respect confidentiality. If he doesn't possess these personality aspects, he should not be chosen as an auditor in the first place.

I am an internal Auditor in a retail company. and I am very friendly with the auditees. but as long as I objectively give them reduced grades (based on Non-conformance) they will always feel uncomfortable. When I first started at this company I gave a presentation of the objective and the scoop of the audit to clarify that my job is to make the process more efficient not to try to find faults. However, some auditees may not accept the idea that someone is auditing and evaluating them. The problem is not always the auditor but the auditees mindset. I have had complaints about my attitude but all complaints against me were invalid and clearly reflect that the auditee is not objective.

Auditors are required to be unbiased. If it is evident that the auditor cannot be unbiased then immediately reporting this person is the only answer. A bad attitude for whatever reason is unacceptable as it will have an effect on the outcome of the audit regardless of what has caused this attitude. Failing to report this person prior to the beginning of the audit can only end badly for the auditee.

The bad attitude of an auditor can indeed affect the audit. The job o an auditor is very similar to job of a judge. A judge has to look at the case as a third party. free from any bias or a pre conceived notion. Judge should act strictly in accordance to rules and should take decision based on the evidences alone. The auditor should do his job exactly the same way. Training on body language, psychology, organization behavior will definitely help them to understand themselves, their job,

I can not speak from personal experience, but only pass on a colleague's story, and results of a bad external auditor. This was few years back during the year end inventory audit. Several company facillities were selected to have external auditor visit. My colleagues warehouse was select, he was not worried he know his inventory was spot on. On the day off the audit the auditor arrived early. He ask how many errors he should expect to find? My colleague reply zero. He did not like the reponse To make a long story short the auditor made every effort to find an error. He checked 4x the munber of SKU of the average audit. Most of our facillites audits tokk only a couple hours, this one went on for several more hours. In the end he found not discrepancies in my colleagues inventory. In this case the auditor attitude did not have an effect. But, it was clear to my colleague hthe auditor was tring to make an impression with his boss, and/or client, and climb the corporate ladder. So auditors with bad attitude can make it tough, but will not effect the audit. If your non-conformance free the your nonconformance free, regardless of the auditors attitude. Neil

Attitude of an Auditor during audits sometimes affect the auditees response time and compliance to actions required? Thus, an auditor should put himself in the same mind frame as an auditee considering that he maybe dealing with either a rookie or a well experience auditee which in return his wrong attitude could backfire on him.

There are many things which need to take into consideration in a proper auditing process that will give positive results in the end. One of this is the attitude of auditors from which it will totally affect the whole process of the purpose because this will tends the auditee to be irritated also once the attitude of an auditor is bad. Body language is also another thing an auditor should be aware of and must always project with a great smile as you see it fit during the course of auditing process.

The auditor attitude can affect the audit a great deal as when the auditor and auditee interacts they develop a sense of bonding with each other and the way the one work is often reflected on the project as they form one team and audit becomes there common objective, where one is auditing and the other is providing all the details / documents required for the audit. Body language is a vital point in auditing as the auditor can only make the auditee comfortable with the way he interacts thus a good body language gives a signal that the auditor is willing to listen and he would act rationally.

It was my attitude which made that audit successfulwhat I did is . I made the auditee very comfortable.created trust within the employees assured them of my role is improvement of the companyto my surprise each one started telling me all the problems incase of the minor problems I suggested few solutions and got it solved on the floorwhile a few critical ones were put forth in front of the management strategies were devised by brainstorming .. Root causes of the problem were eliminated.. Thus just your attitude can win the game!!!!!

With some training institutions it does form part of the course, but I would also like to add that all Auditors should be regirtered with an accreditation body, and all accreditation bodies have a code of conduct to with they much subscribe. They also sign for agreement to follow the code of conduct when they apply for accreditation.

The attitude of the auditor can affect severely the course of the audit, a bad attitude just make all the process more difficult, extended and more stressful for both sides. I think that not just body language should be aware of, even in different regions of the same country a simply word can mean something different and make all very hard, the auditors must investigate for the customs on each city before arrive, even more in a foreign audit.

Dress code is also an important characterisitic to be consider during an audit. Auditor should be dressed in such way auditee party feels confortable, auditor should study ahead the environment to be audited and be dressed in concordance to that specific environment.

One of the ways in which the process will become more difficult is that the auditee will feel more comfortable giving as little information as possibleor even deliberately not give substantial information unless requested to - this will affect the quality of the audit.

I think that the attitude of an Auditor during audits most of the time affect the Auditees response. Also a bad attitude can just make all the process more difficult, extended and more stressful. To avoid this, we had to give for both sides more training, they have to take a note also. The training will help them how to detect and to stop the bad attitude.

I think Auditors should audit with a positive mind their aim being not to look for trouble but to find and help the client improve in overall performance. This will help the auditee to be comfortable composed rather than an auditor with bad attitude who will make the auditee stressed angry and confused in whatever the main aim of the Audit was. i belive also refresher trainings will help a gread deal in tamimg both sides of the audit process.

Auditors attitude addresses two important aspects which need to be considered when attempting to maximize excellence in an internal audit department. Suggests that individual auditors' risk-taking propensity and tolerance for ambiguity can adversely affect many important decisions, such as sample size selection, which in turn leads to costly as well as ineffective audits; and that internal audit directors utilize interpersonal methods of control, personality assessment of audit team members, and continuous evaluation of budgeted with actual audit hours, to overcome any such adverse effects is very important. sobowale

Auditor Bad attitude negatively affects the main essence of the principle of audit which is improving the system/process. An auditor with a bad attitude only forces the auditee to cover up, hide or circumvent the truth so as to scale an audit which ultimately defeats the purpose of the audit in the first place. Auditor bad attitude can even destroy business relationship as a hitherto good supplier being badly audited by her client could decide to forego the business relationship as a result of an ugly attitude by an auditor.

An auditor's attitude can affect the audit in a great deal. If it is a positive attitude, you will have the attention and commitment of your auditees. you are more likely to save time and get answers to your questions within the shortest time frame. On the other hand and speaking from experience, the auditor became very aggressive during the audit and made the auditees felt like they knew nothing. He wouldn't even give an opportunity for them to explain. At a point the auditees became very uncooperative and unwilling to respond to any of his question. He ended up wasting so much time and achieving very liitle. It is very important to teach training auditors to ba aware of body language because it goes a long way in the success of the audit which is suppose to be the goal.

Thank you for your question! Your are correct that the Attitude of the auditor has a major role to play during the audit. We all auditors have to keep in mind that we are going there to FIND the FACT not the DEFECT. Audit is a fact finding mission, not a Police Operation. The objectivity can be traced in many ways. We dont have to rude or arrogant. All we have to be is Professional and follow gentleman's etiquette. Thank you Sheikh Mohsin Ali

Therefore, both parties ( auditor and auditee) should be in a professional and cooperative way to complete the audit task, so that the organisation can improve the overall preformance by correcting any mistakes found. Hi Michelle, In my experience, i say that yes, you are right that an auditor's bad attitude will definitely affect the audit. Because an auditor with a bad attitude would definitely ruin the values of employees, suppliers & customers. Auditors with positive attitude are winners, they are true & loyal to their organization & they do achieve their focussed goals. Consciously as thought precede actions, by choosing our thoughts we act our way into certain circumstances, hence apart from teaching the skills, purpose & objective to an Trainee Auditor, we should also concentrate on their attitude, body language, mindset, way of thinking, habitual way of looking at facts during the audit. in our office, our team, we focus on all these criteria during an audit, which would help us be even more productive to very & examine in detail. Thanks & Regards, Ramya.

If an auditor enters an audit with a poor attitude. There's a big chance the result of the audit is not going to be good. That's why I feel that organizations should be very careful on who they select to be auditors. In my opinion an auditor should be someone who is friendly and gets along with everyone. They should also be someone who is very knowledgeable on every departments procedures and of course ISO.

Along with good auditing skills, a possitive approach should be used by the Auditor. "An auditor must be a friend, a critic, and a philosopher". Negative attitude of the auditor reflects his wrong approach, and the audit process might not be as accurate as it might have been in a friendly atmosphere, in which the Auditee and Auditor both are comfortable. Further it is compulsory that the Auditor should have good communication skills, and should have good physical gestures, body language, and a good personality. There things are mandatory for the smooth process of the audit.

Auditors should have an attitude of serving to help the auditee improve the process. The vast majority of auditors that I have experienced have this helpful approach. I would rather have an auditor who is detailed oriented, understands what they are auditing and finds some issues rather than an auditor who is boared, in a hurry, and would rather find no problems in order not to write up anything in the report.

The Auditor's attitude is the key to auditing,as defined the audit is based on inspection of records, information by interviewing people concerned. Some time a interogation is required. The purpose and scope of Audit is to achieve contonous improvement. The purpose of Audit is to remove defects from the system or to imrove the system as per the QMS Manual to assure the improvement of quality, how unorganized the stystem may be but still have room for improvement and that can only be achieved by the combine effort of Auditor and Auditee and to achieve any goal the attitude is the key to success, bad or agressive attitude of the auditor will make people scare, during inspection of records,he might need to have interviews and because of the bad attitude of the auditor the people during interview will not trust the Auditor they will have fear that they are going to loose their job ,because of the Auditors report,so they will conceal the facts or during interogation, with Auditor having aggressive approach the people might get offended and the audit will not be successful as it had been, the roots of the nonconformities will not be visible to the Auditor. Now lets take an Auditor with good attitude, people will not be scared of him and will be more comfortable of providing information and record, interviews will be conducted in freindly atmosphere, and interogative questions will be in a passive tone e.g aggressive question. "why you did not observe this mistake,i think you are not fully aware of your company QMS".

Attitude of an Auditor during audits sometimes affect the auditees response time and compliance to actions required? Thus, an auditor should behave properly and put himself in the same mind frame as an auditee considering that he maybe dealing with either a rookie or a well experience auditee which in return his wrong attitude could backfire on him. A proper communication is always beneficial for complaince handling.

yes, I think auditor's body language is a very important audit skill whcih can help auditor to perform a successful audit. Most of time, auditee may feel nervous, auditor need to let them feel ease through good attitude and good body language, which will make auditee feel like to communicate with auditor, and so that auditor can get more needed information throught better communication. Bad attitude sometimes even may cause the resistance from auditee and cause that the audit process could not be carried out fluently.

How much can auditor's attitude affect the audit? I'd say very much. it is worth noting that during the audit exercise the auditor is the pacesetter. the auditees look up to him/her If the auditor doesnot make the auditee feel comfortable and relaxed, he may hardly get enough information from him because he feels tense and afraid thus takes puts up a defensive attitude. With this the auditee becomes difficult to work with. Yes auditor trainees should be trained to be aware of their body language. this is also very essential. when the audito uses sarcastic language or makes slangs that suggest the auditee knows nothing or knows not enough, such things keep the auditee uncomfortable, the audit exercise cannot be a very smooth one because the auditee may likely take a defensive position this time to prove to the auditor that he knows something. He may tend to hide informations that can constitute flaws in the system being audited.

Attitude of the auditor determines the success of the audit. In Most cases due to the fear , entry level executives tend to make mistakes while answering back to the auditor. Comfort zone must be established between the auditor and auditee for successful completion and for determining AOI.

Human beings, being emotional creatures, it is sometimes extremely hard to separate attitude and professionalism. A true auditing professional like many other professionals has to separate personal attitude from their professional responsibilities, but is not always successful. If a client perceives that an auditor is not professional or is not objective, then it is the responsibility of the client to document their behavior and report it to the auditing company. An auditing company wants to retain your business and if one of their auditors is not performing their duties, being unprofessional, or being biased, they need to know. Positive attitude and professionalism unfortunately cannot be taught, it is a mind set, and perception of a client is of major importance. The most important procedure in a case like this is the documentation.

Attitude is everything, at the end of te day Auditors are also doing their job, behaving promptly & maintaining a positive body language should not be taught, it is something they should have by default, not just for an auditors job, in general any work enviornment. The attitude of the Auditor plays an important role in the outcome of the audit. If an Auditor goes in with an attitude, he/she will most likely not be welcomed and the individuals being audited will 98% of the time have a uneasy feeling and defensive attitude making the Auditor's job difficult as well. We have people that once they put on their uniform or name tag identifying them as someone with (perceived) power forget that we should only do our job within the guidelines set forth.

"Ethical, fair, truthful, sincere, honest and discreet" as previously stated sums it up. An Auditor is there the "help" improve a process in the end. Making a worker fail at their job because of your bad attitude does not help the situation in any way. If anything it may mask the problems of what you are auditing. You can't request which auditor you do want, but many times you are allowed to request what auditor you don't want.

Interesting point. There is a catch 22 with how the auditor behaves. The auditor has to maintain an attitude of objectivity and yet the auditor must have a line of questioning and actions that encourage the auditee to be truthful and open. The first guideline I use is we have only one mouth and two ears. We should take a hint from our bodies on how much speaking and how much listening we do. If your audit batters the auditee with questions someone will become defensive and the communication of information will break down. Try to ask open ended questions and wait for the information to come before you start speaking too soon. The second comes from my favorite TV detective, Columbo. I loved him because he played dumb and asked all the questions of his expert suspects. I am not suggesting you play dumb but what I am suggesting is that your behavior reflects the respect you should be giving the auditee by recognizing their expertise in what THEY do. Don't they know better what they do than the auditor? The auditor is armed with only the information of what they are supposed to do and that may be provided by someone who has never even seen the process. The second point is a good lead for my third point. It is all about respect. The auditor needs to respect the person as an individual. The auditor then needs to respect the fact that they are dealing with the true subject matter expert, the auditee. In my experience if you come into this relationship based on respect for the other person, the respect for you as an auditor trying to do their job is usually returned. I heard someone once say they would rather be respected as a worthy opponent than an ineffectual bystander. If someone is resisting the audit, you need to find a way to communicate the fact you understand the resistance and respect their opinion of the whole process. If an auditor says things like "I realize that you are very busy doing your job and it may seem like the audit is a waste of time but it is something we both have to endure." Auditor shows understanding and even goes and admits to being a fellow suffferer of the audit process. It can be a common ground. Not saying an auditor should bash the audit but they can agree it is often a pain to comply but it is something WE ALL have to do. I am not saying this is an act because if you do not realize that the audit process is an imposition to someone who just wants to get the job done, you do not need to be an auditor. It really is an imposition to the people who do not understand it is an opportunity to improve. Soap box ended.

I don't think an auditors attitude will have that much of big effect on an audit. Yes it will make things awkward because you want to feel as relaxed and calm as possible during an audit to respond professionally to their questions. The key here is to not let the auditor's attitude get to you.Remain calm since is not worth arguing. There will be times when you run into an auditor that doesn't agree with you because maybe they just have a lack of knowledge in your area and of course they don't want to admit that they could be wrong.

As an auditor you should not be aggressive in anyway. You should try to put your auditee at ease; you need to make them feel the audit will help them improve. As an auditor you need to be professional, make suggestions and help explain to the auditee the requirement/standard. If you are an auditor with attitude you may lose business for your company if the client decides to go with another auditing body. Your work is a reflection on your companies reputation.

The attitude of an auditor is vital to the success of the audit. The auditor must approach those being audited in a way which will put them at ease. In order to collect accurate information, an auditor must develop some kind of relationship with the auditee to facilitate open and honest communication between the two. Part of the quality of the information gained from an audit depends on the information gained from the auditee, who must feel comfortable discussing the job with the auditor. Auditing skills, objectivity, and communication are the foundations of effective auditing. Body language provides a large portion of the richness of communication between people. Poor, aggressive, or uninterested signals will elicit different responses from the auditee, and thus adversely affect the quality of the information collected. An auditor must be open to the auditee in order to maximize the accuracy of the information collected and expedite the process overall.

Auditors do not always receive the warmest reception from those outside the profession.to be successful at their job Auditors must be able to add these 5 skills.1 Write 2.Speak 3.Listen. 4.Patience 5.finding.an internal Auditors job today is very fast and complex. It is importent for Auditor to actively concentrate on what Auditee are saying so that effective communication can occur.when someone is talking to you do you maintain eye contact with that person. do not see some other place after listening to a postion or suggestion with which you disagree semply respond with something like I understand your point.I just disagree on this one.just think your Audit focus on Organization not person.you can meet in Audit good person also bad person.their is no relationship in Audit like Friend,Brother, Sister.your working for Organization.

Dear Michelle, The attitude of an auditor can impact negatively on the audit; I was recently involved in one audit, where the participants indicated that some of the following behavioral characteristics were displayed by the audit team such as, frowning, and laughing consistently. Auditors at all times must display certain level of professionalism by using humor to improve communication, neutralize resentment, and gain support from attendees. The humor employed here must be a self complimentary one which in most cases is effective and will lead to obtaining good results from the participants.

Of course I do think. Can you image an auditor entering into an organization with a great anger on his face. Or an auditor entering into another organization smiling all the time. The first attitude can afraid some staff members and let them doubt about their own capacities, they'll also may think that auditor is there to blame them. The second attitude (smile all the time) may give the impression that that auditor is not serious enough and will not provide consistent work.I think body language can really have an impact on an internal audit process that's why for me auditors I think should prior coming at the client organization be trained on that subject-matter (body language).

Internal Auditor: Auditor Bad Attitude

Moving forward, internal auditor, as service provider, should consider themselves as partners to all their customers/clients within their company. They must meet their customers' varying needs. Internal auditors have a choice in how to deal with the customer. For example, an internal auditor who uncovers a problem can analyse the situation and provide valuable insight into the solution. By doing so, internal auditor can either use the information to collaborate with the customer to improve their products/services/operations or internal auditor can merely be an aggravator or a fault-finder. If internal auditor chooses not to be a partner, she/he will never be able to add value to their company. Internal auditors must be mindful that they can collaborate with customers/auditees to identify, assess and resolve risk management and control issues.

I agree that auditors should be trained to make the auditee comfortable. An auditors job is to find areas that need improvement in order to benefit the company, employees, and customers. With a good positive attitude, the auditee will tend to be more open to suggestions and most of the time, will see the deficiencies in the system with a bit of guidance from the auditor. If you do not feel comforatble with your auditor, you certainly have a right to ask for someone else at your next audit.

The auditor bad attitude reflect good audit into bad one and instead of finding problem it's create problems also auditee demoralized towards quality concept and not able to co-operate as per quality requirements so that will direct effect a auditing skills.

Sometimes then you have auditors hurrying to get the job done, or you have auditors that are determined to find something, just because they are not happy with taking the time away from their own jobs. I wish people would understand that getting down to the reasons that we have to audit and helping the auditees come up with corrective actions for long term resolution would maybe make it so the audits would have to be less frequent. As in internal auditing, I think we should be there more to help than to point fingers and make people feel like they aren't doing a good job.

Auditors aggression towards Auditee creates unnecessary tension. They should not behave like super employees who determines who to be axed and who to remain.

The internal audit function like any other profession needs psychology for it to be effective and serve the fundamental aspects of its existence in any organization. Internal auditors need to have a good and positive attitude toward their work particularly the interaction with the auditee. If the internal auditor has a negative attitude and is combative in his or her approach there are high chances that the internal auditor will not be effective in the execution of the paramount duties of the internal audit function. The auditee will reciprocate negatively in a negative environment. The internal auditor will not be able to demonstrate independence ,objectivity and integrity which are fundamental ethical principles in any audit assignment. It is vital for the internal auditor to demonstrate a high degree in effective communication with the auditte. If the internal auditor is negative in his or her attitude toward the auditte, chances are high that the auditte will not be cooperative during the aduit .Internal auditors just need to have sound listening skills. The internal auditor must therefore have good listening skills and good listening skills are impeded if the auditor has a negative attitude towards the auditte. For an effective audit to be carried out the internal auditor must be positive in attitude and this vital even for the trainees.

Background internal audit of a church's sacred funds income and expenses processing based on provision of sufficient documentation proof and approval by designated authority to ensure compliance. Observation During audit of the process it was noted that the required documentations such as original invoices, needs and resources analysis forms etc to attest to expenses were lacking and were replaced by improvised ones which do not justify authenticity of expenses and severally avoided required procedures. Classification Because many of the documentations were omitted and severally not used as the process required, these minor nonconfirmance because are several amount to major non-confirmance. On the other hand since attempts were made to improvise documents, the audit gives an opportunity for improvement. Clause 7.4

In my company we give training to potential auditee. We call this training The Do Do'nt training. - The words that should not be used during interview(guess...) - Don't give more informations that requested - Direct to the point - Don't answer to questions outside of your expertise

I think they should be trained not to have a bad attitude and not to portray themselves as I'm coming to find something and I'm going to dig until I do but I think they should be trained to do their job correctly but at the same time come with a more helpful attitude to point out the gaps that are in the system and be suggestive on corrective actions.

Depend on auditor mind set can be affect the audit result. Each auditor should aware the auditing purpose. Lead auditor should brief to organization before audit what is an auditor attitude and how to act to the auditee. Auditor should be fair presentation with open ended for auditee to get the actual result. However, nobody was perfect so that can be mistaken but take note what is wrong and learn for future audit.

Hello This topic of discussion is very vital to most auditors especially internal auditors, in the sense that attitude is a key component in every human being's life and it determmine a lot about how other people's will see you. coming to our topic with reference to the mission of an audit, where it has to be independent and objective assurance, a bad attitude of an auditor will seroiusly jeopodice this mission. it also does not only stop there but it can also affect seriously both the auditing performance and the report as well, therefore, the practice of a good behaviour should always be encourage to auditors during both an audit process and after. regards kebba o. bah
