Commentary—
HEARING, SEEING VOICES
It is somewhat disconcerting...minding ones own
business, walking down the street, mall, or in a
store...and suddenly become aware of someone
talking to themselves. They approach ...you are
oblivious to them….their conversation, a solo affair,
keeps on going. They pass by, walking in the other
direction. Your steps quicken, putting as much dis-
tance between the two without looking too frantic.
This in fact happened to me recently while in a large
box store in Edmonton.
I can’t help but think, in the great divide that marks
the behaviour as well as the resources of a small,
rural town, seemingly light years from the nearest
point of citified malls (sorry Shaunavon, you don’t
count), and those places that seem the centres of
their own universes, called cities. If we were to walk
down our little towns’ clean, if not battered sidewalk
and see approaching a person in full blown conver-
sation with themselves, we wouldn’t run. We would-
n’t immediately avoid confrontation, making a “b-line”
to the other side of the street, or fearful of a three-
way conversation with only two apparent voices
heard. No. We would just appreciate harmless ole’
Bob and walk right on by, or even stop and join the
conversation.
The first time I witnessed this — this seeing voices
- was with my parents. We were in some other giant
box store...Wal-Mart I suppose. Dad was in line at
the cashier; mom was no where to be seen. As I
approached I realized he is talking to himself. As
any dutiful son would think of his dear, dear, fa-
ther...the one who took him to all those hockey prac-
tices, the one who instructed him on the multiple
uses of duct tape, and provided wisdom without
condescension or ire...my thoughts at that very sec-
ond were “My God, he snapped”. He was and still is
the wisest person I know so his collapse of social
grace was painful, if even for those few moments.
As I approached further I realized by tone and inflec-
tion that he was talking to my mother. But where
was my mother? Closer still, I recognized his hand
coming up to his ear, like he was adjusting his ear
piece. But he doesn’t have an ear piece. His hear-
ing is, as any man can attest, selectively great. But
today, I comprehended, and my poor, depressed
heart felt a rush of relief, that he was using one of
those new-fangled ear piece phones; Bluetooth's
they are called. My father hadn’t lost it. Hurray.
But this is the normal scene played out through
much of the cities. These ear phones, almost totally
hidden from sight unless you are looking at a par-
ticular angle,...people walking and talking, having
personal conversations through out the day, in
crowds of people. For this ruralite it is unsettling.
Now, it should be said that I was right on one point.
My dad was talking to my mom. Mom, somewhere
in the mall, nearly lost, was updating the shopping
list and checking with dad that all items were found.
I have to face the facts that this is the size and
speed of urban life, something I don’t feel all that
comfortable with.
So, my question is this. If we are constantly doing
all these things, almost literally plugged into the cy-
ber/technological world, how will we know that the
voices we hear are the result of technology, or
voices of the divine, or of ourselves even? Is God
calling, or is the wife asking to pick up a jug of milk?
And who can I put on hold? TTT

"Slumgullion" may not sound
like the most appetizing name for a dish, but that's part
of its charm. The word's etymology doesn't do it any
favors: "slumgullion" is believed to be derived from
"slum," an old word for "slime," and "gullion," an English
dialectical term for "mud" or "cesspool." The earliest
recorded usage of "slumgullion," in Mark Twain's Rough-
ing It (1872), refers not to a stew but a beverage. The
sense referring to the stew debuted about two decades
later, and while there is no consensus on exactly what
kinds of ingredients are found in it, that's the
"slumgullion" that lives on today.
