Description of presentation:
During 40 years of research at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, French scientist Mirko Beljanski, PhD (1923-
1998), showed that environmental pollution causes DNA destabilization, leading to serious illnesses
including cancer. It is necessary to take a nutritional approach to counteract these toxins and maintain
optimal health.

Presentation title: A Nutritional Approach to Counteract Environmental Toxins

Abstract:
Since the end of WWII the output of chemical molecules into the environment has risen drastically. Many
of these toxic molecules are directly ingested as part of our diet as pesticides in produce, hormones in
milk and meat and heavy metals in fish. There is evidence that there is a link between the simultaneous
rise of environmental pollution and rates of cancer worldwide.

During his 40-year career, Mirko Beljanski, PhD, a researcher at the Pasteur Institute in Paris with over
133 peer-reviewed papers, conducted breakthrough research on DNA destabilization. Dr. Beljanski
discovered that the normal structure of DNA is altered when exposed to carcinogens. He showed that,
when this happens, the DNA of a cell becomes destabilized which leads to major ailments such as cancer.

DNA destabilization is a cumulative process that is influenced by the level and frequency of our contact
with molecules that damage DNA structure. Because many of the carcinogens that we are exposed to are
unavoidable, it is imperative that we develop a nutritional program to help prevent the early onset of DNA
destabilization before serious illness occurs.

In the course of his experiments Beljanski created a test, called the Oncotest, which uses biochemical
means to determine whether or not a substance is carcinogenic. He thought that industrialists would be
interested to know that their products had carcinogenic potential and be eager to take them off the market.
However, this was not the case, and Beljanski used the test instead to discover natural molecules that help
inhibit the synthesis of destabilized DNA.

Dr. Beljanski found two such molecules, the extracts of the plants Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria,
which are currently being clinically studied at Columbia University. Findings about the Rauwolfia extract
have been the topic of a paper published in the International Journal of Oncology (2006;29:1065-1073),
and a paper regarding the findings about the Pao extract have been accepted to the Journal of the Society
for Integrative Oncology and will be published in the winter 2009 issue, volume 7 number 2.

Specific Learning Objectives:

Review Prof. M. Beljanski’s discovery of DNA destabilization and his model for carcinogenesis.

Connect DNA destabilization to the role of environmental toxins in disease.

Review historic use of the Oncotest for identifying molecules that trigger the synthesis of destabilized
DNA and molecules that specifically inhibit the synthesis of destabilized DNA.

Describe preclinical and clinical studies at Columbia University regarding Pao pereira and Rauwolfia
vomitoria.

Target audience
Healthcare professionals in all fields as well as a general audience who are interested in research-
supported natural ways to combat aggressive environmental toxins.

*There will be no pharmacy discussion in this presentation.

Speaker Bio:

Sylvie Beljanski was born in New York City to French parents while her father, biochemist Mirko
Beljanski, PhD, conducted research work with Nobel Prize Winner Severo Ochoa at the New York
University Medical Center. Ms. Beljanski returned to France with her family prior to her first birthday
and completed her undergraduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. She then went on to pursue a law
degree and was admitted to the French Bar in 1995.

In 1996, Ms. Beljanski became President of Natural Source International, Ltd., which offers dietary
supplements stemming from her father’s lifetime of research. She is also the Vice-President of the
Beljanski Foundation, Inc, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to further Dr. Beljanski’s
research. Most recently, Ms. Beljanski is overseeing the development of the Beljanski Wellness Center
and speaks at conferences across the country about the importance of environmental medicine and serious
detoxification.
