ARTHRITIS EXPO- The Arthritis Foundation of Northeastern New York in partnership with Empire Broadcasting Corporation Media Stations, STAR 101.3 and WABY, Hannaford Supermarkets and Genentech is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Arthritis EXPO, scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 10 am 3 pm at the Century House in Latham. The Arthritis EXPO is a hands-on, interactive showcase of businesses, tools and programs that can assist the estimated 300,000 people in the Capital District who live with the daily struggles of arthritis. Open to the public, we expect individuals and families from young to old to attend. Speakers and demonstrations will round out the day as we provide an uplifting approach to dealing with arthritis. Last year, the sold out event attracted over hundreds of people looking for traditional to alternative ways on how to treat the debilitating disease. Local businesses have an opportunity to reserve a space at the Arthritis Expo to display their products and services. Arthritis impacts all aspects of ones life, from medically, socially, emotionally and economically. So any business can be a great asset to the Arthritis Expo. Space is limited so this is a first come, first serve basis. Cost for a booth is $350 for a for-profit business and $150 for a non-forprofit. There will be an entry fee of $5 per person or $8 per couple to the Arthritis Expo. Children, 12 years of age or younger are free. For more information about Arthritis Expo and/or wish to register as a vendor, please contact Sonya Andrew, Program Director at 456-1203 or sandrew@arthritis.org or www.arthritis.org. You may be wondering what is a school program and what do I teach the youth about? Well, I go into classrooms across the county and talk to kids about the great dairy industry. The three main topics that I focus on are animal care, environmental practices, and the nutritional value of dairy products. I do this all through a short story that I wrote called Down on the Dairy Farm. I use various fun facts to teach the youth. Some of fun facts include how cows drink up to 30 gallons of water each day about the same size as bathtub full and that one cow gives around 100 glasses of milk each day(6 or 7 gallons). Youth are one of the most significant groups to teach about the importance of dairy in their diet. With fewer youth drinking milk and more becoming obese, its important to provide education about a healthy lifestyle and proper diet. Dairy is a vital part of our diet providing us with nine essential vitamins and minerals. For youth these nutrients are even more crucial for their young, growing body, like calcium which provides the body with strong teeth and bones or protein to help build muscles. Along with eating various healthy foods such as dairy, kids should also get out and play for at least sixty minutes each day. I love teaching youth about the dairy cows, life on the farm, and how great dairy products are.
