Night, an award-winning feature-length documentary and cinematic tour de force, will have a special screening tomorrow night at the Laemmle theater in Pasadena. The film from writerdirector Lawrence Johnston and diretor of photography Laurie McInnes aims, no less, to explore the universal nature of night and how we experience the night, and does so in convincing fashion. Scene, World Premieres Feb. 8th [5][jpeg] Before their was a Downtown L. A. renaissance, in the 2000s, there was a wild and woolly art scene that emerged in the Eighties. Young Turks, a 95-minute documentary by filmmakers Stephen Seemayer and Pamela Wilson (who were there!), is an irreverent and intimate snapshot of a vital art scene that existed amid the mean streets of L.A.s urban core. The films newly recut version will have its world premiere on Friday, February 8th at the Downtown Independent (on Main St. between 2nd and 3rd). Art critic Hunter Drohojowska, writing about Young Turks in the L.A. Weekly in 1981, called the rough-cut verson a kaleidoscopic melange of Hollywoods B-movie corn, bizarre underground existence and a few naked truths. Artists are portrayed earnestly explaining their work in one scene and participating in some hallucinogenic madness in the next. [6][jpeg]

While the film about art and life in downtown L.A. circa 1980 has been fully digitized and reedited by Pamela Wilson, the filmmakers have attempted to maintain the energetic quality of the original rought cut, while giving some structure to the inherent irony and absurd juxtapositions. Everything about Young Turks strikes me as something of an L.A. phenomenon, Drohojowska wrote. Its an extremely personal work, more about a lifestyle than art. It remains, nonetheless, a valid document, because it shows how the art created was so intimately involved in the style of life led. Christo Dimassis anad Alana Krausz, who appeared in the cast of DFFLAs 2012 Centerpiece Film, Carlos Spills The Beans, executive produced Between Us, a drama based on the hit Off-Broadway play with Julia Stiles, that premiered at Slamdance.

Also premiering at Slamdance was Diamond On Vinyl, a new dramatic feature starring Brian McGuire, who also appeared in Carlos Spills The Beans. ... After screening at DFFLA in 2013, Paul Grellongs short film Tracer Gun went on to win a couple of awards: Best Thriller Short (Burbank International Film Festival) and Best Writing [Short] (FirstGlance Film Fest Philadelphia) Congrats to all! The Rambler, a new feature produced by DFFLA alum Roger M. Mayer, premiered at Sundance Film Festival last month to an enthusiastic SRO audience.
