About The Celebration of Research Excellence and Knowledge Transfer Event (CREATE)
Purpose:
The purpose of this event is to showcase research that is conducted by VIU students (any student, any program, any year!). Come and discover the innovative research that students are engaged in at VIU. This event is open to the general public and the VIU community (family and friends welcome!).
CREATE aims to:
advance the profile of student research at VIU; give students who are already engaged in research: public speaking, presentation and poster making skills; spark interest and research curiosity; enable networking and the exchange of ideas, methodologies, etc.; and provide a better understanding of what research is and why it is important at VIU.
Event:
CREATE is a two- day event (March 26th & 27th, 2013) full of exciting activities. There will be:
Poster Displays (students) Presentations (students) A Scholarship Slam (mini talks for students and faculty) Electronic Posters and Videos for the Web (students) A Celebration of Research Gala (students, faculty and general public)

There are many exciting opportunities for you to participate. Register today by filling out the application form. All students (any student, any program, any year!) are encouraged to participate.
Poster Displays Presentations Scholarship Slam E-Posters & Videos
Poster Displays:
Posters will be on display for the two day event (March 26th & 27th) in building 300 in the upper section of the main cafeteria. You are required to sign up for one 90 minute block to present your poster. Theres chances to win prizes so be prepared to answer judges questions. In addition, you can have your poster published on the CREATE web site, see E-Posters and Videos for more details. Need assistance? Attend a free Poster Making Workshop. Format:
Tables and display boards will be available. Display board measurements: Height 91.4cm (36 inches) x Width 121.9cm (48 inches).
Presentation:
Presentations will be held during the lunch hours on March 26th and 27th in the Royal Arbutus Room (located in the main cafeteria, building 300, top floor).The approximate length including questions will be 15 minutes. The presentation must be the result of research but the format is not restricted (e.g. an original or historical recipe based on research, music or theatrical performance, oral presentations, etc.). Scholarship Slam:
The Scholarship Slam is a fun and cool event for you to present the most important aspects of your research project in less than five minutes. This event will take place at the Celebration of Research Gala. Faculty and students (judged separately) with the highest audience clap-o-meter response will win prizes! Use your best elevator pitch to describe your research in non-technical terms; have fun and try your best to engage the audience! Limited number of spots so sign up fast! The poster displays are open to the general public for viewing. A Peoples Choice Award drop box will be available for viewers to vote for their favourite poster.
Schedule of Events
Event Poster Set-Up Location Main Cafeteria (building 300) Time 8:00a.m.-10:00p.m.
Students will be assigned to a particular section in the cafeteria to set-up their poster display. Oral Presentations Royal Arbutus Room (building 300, top floor) 11:30a.m. 1:00p.m.
Selected students will be presenting their research project in the form of an oral presentation, music and theatrical performance. The presentations will be approximately 15 minutes in length which will include a question and answer session. This event is open to the general public. We encourage everyone to stay for the full hour and a half to view all presentations. A Peoples Choice drop box will be available to vote for your favourite presentation. Come celebrate VIUs research accomplishments! Mingle across disciplines and show your support for your friends and professors participating in the Scholarship Slam. They need you there to vote! Winners will be chosen based on the audiences applause measured on a clap-o-meter. During the event winners will be announced for the following awards: Peoples Choice Best Poster Award Peoples Choice Best Presentation Award Meritorious Best Poster Award Meritorious Best Oral Presentation Award Scholarship Slam Award Free food and cash bar! Semi-formal event inclusive to all west coast fashion styles! The Celebration of Research Gala is open to the VIU community and general public.
