Freefall Lab Date:_____ Period:_____ Group Number:_______ Name:_______________________ Names of other group members present: ________________ _______________ _______________

________________ Include your name, date, group number, and class period at the top of each sheet of work in your lab report. Include the names of the other members of your lab group who were present for data collection. Keep a reference copy of your work as a study guide. 1. Run two timer tapes (actually, both sides of a single tape) as directed in class, and select one of them for data collection and analysis. Label the first dot more that 1.0 cm away from the initial marks as START to indicate the beginning of your measurement range. Mark and label FINISH 0.500 m beyond START to indicate the end of your measurement range. 2. Number the intervals in your measurement range from START to FINISH, and measure the length of each individual interval. 3. Make a neatly organized and labeled table of how long each interval is (Dx), in order, from START to FINISH, and make room in the table for three additional columns: the cumulative displacement to the end of each interval (x), the cumulative elapsed time to the end of each interval (t), and the average velocity of each interval (v). 4. Calculate and tabulate the displacement (x) from the START mark to the end of each interval in the measurement range, and the corresponding cumulative elapsed time (t). 5. Calculate and tabulate an individual average velocity (v) for each interval by taking each measured interval length (Dx) and dividing by the appropriate interval time (Dt), based upon the ticker s period of repetition. 6. Make a graph of total displacement from START (dependent variable) versus time (independent variable). Plot each displacement value at the final end of each interval. 7. Make a graph of average interval velocity (dependent variable) versus time (independent variable). Plot the average velocity of each interval (Dx/Dt) at the center of each time interval. 8. Draw a single straight approximation on the velocity graph ( best fit line ) to summarize or approximate the whole acceleration period as well as you can. Calculate the acceleration result from the slope of this line, and label this calculated acceleration on the graph. 9. Calculate the displacement from START to the end of each even numbered interval based upon the area under the straight best fit approximation to the velocity graph. Use a visibly distinct shape or color of mark to plot each of these calculated displacements on the original displacement graph, and write a descriptive comparison of these new points versus the original data points.
