Traces of Grace

Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners; Ah, life is full of contradictions! With Ash Wednesday this week followed by Valentines Day on Thursday, I am not sure if I will be able to fast from chocolate one day and splurge the next day! But then Fr. Chris says it best, dont look for the quick fix, but do something that will evoke a lifestyle change. (I think that means I can eat Valentine chocolates this week!) Something fresh for Ash Wednesday will be our bilingual service at St. Edward at 7:30pm. Be sure to check the bulletin for the list of all of our services for Ash Wednesday. As a church, we can be a source of contradictions as well. While our Diocese of Orange has settled our sex abuse cases several years ago and have taken significant steps to prevent the abuse of children (see our website, www.stedward.com for a statement from our diocese), the recent news concerning the Archdiocese of Los Angeles causes us to remember how broken and sinful we can be as a church. It can be a heavy weight for all of us to carry. But in the midst of this reality, there is great hope. People still continue to engage the Gospel and live out the Good News. This weekend I will be sharing with you our Diocesan Capital Campaign, For Christ Forever. This campaign which is for several diocesan needs will create exciting possibilities as Church as well as for our own parish community. I will be inviting you to volunteer, come to a reception or come with us on a bus to visit the Crystal Cathedral campus which will soon be ours. More to be revealed! Together in Christ;

Fr. Steve Sallot Pastor

Rasgos de Gracia
Queridos feligreses; Ah, la vida est llena de contrariedades! Con el Mircoles de Ceniza esta semana y el Da de San Valentn el jueves, no estoy seguro si ser capaz de dejar el chocolate por un da y al da siguiente llenarme de chocolate! Por eso el Padre Chris lo dice mejor, no busquen la solucin rpida, pero hagan algo que transforme su vida o su estilo de vida. Creo que esto significa que puedo comer bombones el da de San Valentn! Algo nuevo ocurrir el Mircoles de Ceniza tendremos una Misa bilinge en San Eduardo a las 7:30pm. Revise el boletn para ver la lista de todos los servicios que ofreceremos ese da. Como iglesia, tambin podemos ser fuente de contradicciones. Mientras que nuestra dicesis de Orange ha establecido los casos de abuso sexual hace varios aos y han tomado medidas importantes para prevenir el abuso de nios (ver nuestra pgina web, www.stedward.com para ver lo que dice nuestra dicesis), las noticias recientes sobre la Arquidicesis de Los ngeles nos hace recordar que tan rota y pecadora puede ser nuestra iglesia. Esto puede ser un gran peso para todos nosotros. Pero en medio de esta realidad, hay una gran esperanza. Muchas personas continan participando del Evangelio y viviendo la buena nueva. Este fin de semana compartir con ustedes la Campaa Capital Diocesana, Por Siempre para Cristo. Esta campaa fue creada por varias necesidades diocesanas, ofrece oportunidades positivas para la iglesia, as como para nuestra comunidad parroquial. Pronto los estar invitando a ser voluntarios, o a que nos acompaen a una recepcin o a ir con nosotros en un autobs a visitar la Catedral de Cristal que pronto ser nuestra. Habr ms que ser revelado! Juntos en Cristo;

Pbro. Steve Sallot Prroco

ABSTINENCIA

ABSTINENCE

Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate and authentic sense of penance.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE

In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to ones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted but liquids are allowed. Note: Those who are unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

Parish Volunteers Needed

Altar Guild
The Altar Guild is the liturgical ministry whose volunteer members perform "light house keeping" duties for the Church. Although the time required is minimal (usually less than one hour per month), our services have a significant impact on the appearance of the Church and in the performance of the Mass ritual. Once a month, usually on a Monday or Friday, members work in teams of two or three to: 1.Fill the altar and processional candles with oil. 2.Wash the Mass holy vessels, such as chalices, ciboriums and carafes. 3.Tidy up the pews, crying room, Marion Chapel and balcony. Other members carry out their work at home by washing and ironing the Priests' albs and small linens used at Mass, and washing the Altar Servers robes. This is a humble ministry, but as vital as any other at Saint Edward the Confessor Church. Please consider yourself an honorary member of the Altar Guild each time you visit our beautiful church and take the time to pick up the area you've been using so that the next attendee will be greeted by a clean place to worship.
