What is the National Sport Day


The Qatar National Sport Day is celebrated every second Tuesday of February and is an initiative adopted by HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent. The establishment of the National Sport Day took place in advance of the 2011 Arab Games, staged in Doha, with the Emiri Decree nr 80 for the year 2011 on December 6; the Decree marked an historic day for Qatar, instituting a public holiday for the National Sport Day to further embed sporting values into the nations culture and inspire local people to participate in sports activities. Across the country, ministries, government departments, public and private sector organisations and sports clubs will be organising sporting activities for all on February 12, 2013. The event aims to create awareness about sports and its health benefits. The National Sport Day is also a further example of the countrys commitment to sport, in addition to the Schools Olympic Program, which encourages schoolchildren to practice sport as an integral part of their daily life. On February 12, the Qatar Olympic Committee will open all sports clubs and facilities, allowing everyone, men, women, children and persons with disabilities to practice and enjoy sporting activities. Events at the Corniche, Aspire, Al Rafaa Street and the Olympic Parks will demonstrate the importance of sport in daily life, in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Qatar Olympic Committee wants to promote sports, physical education and sustainable development, further enhancing the Qatar National Vision 2030. Additionally, a Sports Zone is being set up by QOC near the Corniche, featuring all-day sport and recreational activities open for all, from February 12 till 16. Qatar is one of few nations that dedicate a Day of Sport for its society.

The Vision

To adopt the best practices and means in promoting the practice of sport and physical activities among members of the society.

The Objectives

1. Widen the scope of community participation in sport and physical activities and increase the average of active participation. 2. Provide all members of Qatar Society with the opportunity to participate in entertaining activities. 3. Promote a sport culture in the society in order to increase awareness about the importance of sport and physical activities. 4. Establish criteria for measuring the level of social and individual participation in sport and physical activities. 5. Promote the sporting and recreational activities and make participants enjoy the activities organised during the National Sport Day. Everyone is invited to be a part of the National Sport Day, and organisations and private companies are encouraged to be part of the event by organising activities on the day. .

Qatar National Vision 2030


The Qatar National Sport Day aims to promote sports, physical education and sustainable development, and in doing so further enhance the guiding principles of the Qatar National Vision 2030. Qatars National Vision is based on the Guiding Principles of the Permanent Constitution and the directions of Their Highnesses the Emir, the Heir Apparent and Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, as well as on extensive consultation with government institutions and local and international experts. The National Vision builds on a society that promotes justice, benevolence and equality. The Vision embodies the principles of the Permanent Constitution which: protects public and personal freedoms; promotes moral and religious values and traditions; and guarantees security, stability and equal opportunities. Qatars National Vision rests on four pillars: Human Development Social Development Economic Development Environmental Development.

The 2012 National Sport Day


The countrys inaugural National Sport Day (NSD) took place on 14 February 2012 and saw the participation of several governmental and non-governmental institutions, making the event a significant success under all aspects. All government and non-government authorities which participated in the prestigious event described the event, instituted by the Emiri decree issued by HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Deputy Emir, Heir Apparent and President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, as a historic for both communities and individuals. HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee highlighted the interaction of community with the event. The Secretary General highlighted the National Sport Day aim to encourage members of local community to adopt healthy lifestyle and develop the physical and psychological abilities of the community in light of the 2030 National Vision. Sheikh Saoud said that the National Sport Day will increase the awareness to the importance of sport. All Municipalities across Qatar, security bodies, oil and gas companies, both public and private sectors, sport federations and clubs, Ministries and institutions marked the event in a festive national scene. Among many others, the Qatar Football Association, together with the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee and Al-Dowri and Al-Kass Corporation held activities involving 25 different teams at Aspire Zone; Qatar Petroleum organised events in over 50 sports across seven locations in the country; and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development hosted activities whose participants are estimated to have burned a staggering one million calories. The inaugural National Sport Day was also an opportunity for the Qatar Olympic Committee to conduct a survey to assess the participants sport practice. Polling stations distributed at different locations like the Corniche, Cultural Village and Aspire Zone reported that, of the 457 individuals engaged in the survey, more than 400 actively practiced sport in a regular manner, whereas only just above 50 didnt do any activity. The survey also showed that the breakdown of the active individuals was of 295 males and 111 females, while among the inactive participants the proportions were respectively 31 and 20. Finally, the survey highlighted that more than 120 individuals practice sport at least once a week, with 134 taking part in activities three times a week.

National Sport Day Ambassadors


Ashraf Amgad Elseify - Athletics Hammer Throw Qatar Athletics next big thing. In his 16-year of age Ashraf set a World Youth best in Hammer Throw and last season he broke the World Junior record in Barcelona despite still being counted as a youth athlete. In the Catalan capital of Barcelona, Ashraf won the World Junior title, a couple of weeks after triumphing at the Asian Junior Championships. Ibrahim Khalfan - Football Al Sadd Ibrahim is considered the most talented football player of his generation. Son of the famous former international player Ibrahim Khalfan Al Khalfan, he was raised up in Al Arabi, following the footsteps of his father. In 2006 he was voted Asian Player of the Season, a unique and still sole in his kind accomplishment for the Qatar football. Still 24, the Al Sadd playmaker has earned almost won 50 caps for the national team and won the Asian Champions League trophy in 2011. Mutaz Essa Barshim - Athletics High Jump In London 2012 Olympic Games 21-year-old Mutaz became only the second Qatari to win an Athletics medal, after securing bronze in mens High Jump. The Aspire Academy educated athlete won several major global and continental honours in the last couple of years including the World Junior title, Asian indoor & outdoor Championships gold and the Arab Games crown, while he also qualified in every big events final. He is the current Asian record coholder with 2.39. Noor Al Malki - Athletics Sprinting events Noor was the first ever Qatari female Olympian in Athletics events. She was unlucky not to finish her Olympic preliminary round 100m race in London, after sustaining a leg injury soon after she left the starting blocks. She started practicing in 2008 at 14 years of age and soon became the fastest Qatari winning the Qatar Athletics Federation Best Female Athlete award for 2011. Nada Arkaji - Swimming Freestyle In August 2012 at the London Aquatics Center, 18-year-old Nada became the first woman to represent Qatar at the Olympic Games competing in the 50m freestyle. Nada began practicing as a 9-year-old at the Tidal Waves Club at the Al Jazeera Academy. She is the daughter of Qatar national team and Al Sadd goalkeeper, Mohamed Wafa Arkaji. Abdulrahman Abdulqader Abdulrahman - Parathletics - Throwing The sole Qatari entry at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Abdulrahman competed in Shot Put F34, Discus Throw F32-34 and Javelin Throw F33-34, with the sixth place in Discus being his best placing. Addulrahman ranked also 7th in Javelin and 9th in the Shot Put. Jarallah Ali Almari - Football Al Rayyan The 24-year-old Al Rayyan striker is one of the most prolific strikers and most improved players of the Qatar Stars League. He started played professionally for Al Rayyan in 2007. He joined Al-Kharitiyath for the 2009-2010 season where he had a successful spell. He re-joined Al Rayyan in 2010 and is a permanent member of teams frontline ever since. Jarallah is included regularly at all National Tean call ups. Saed Juma Al Hitmi - Volleyball Al Arabi Saed is an iconic figure in Qatars volleyball. He has captained Mens National Team several times. He started playing volleyball in high school motivated by his brother Abdullah who was playing in Al Arabi Volleyball team, as well as the National team. He has won several titles with Al Arabi and was voted Qatar Volleyball League MVP for the 2007-2008 season.

NSD Logo
The National Sport Day logo captures the essence of energy, sportsmanship and dynamism. The logo comprises two elements a running person image and the National Sport Day logotype. These two elements merge together into one mark conveying harmony, balance and strength, defining the qualities needed for success. The logo contains six colours: maroon (the colour of Qatars national flag), red (symbolizing passion, energy, happiness and sunshine), green (life, nature, growth, harmony, freshness), black (power, elegance, formality), yellow (innovation, creativity, thinking, ideas) and light blue (peace, sincerity, confidence, integrity). National Sport Day Mascots


They are young, healthy and sporty and they are ready to inspire all Qataris to jump into action: they are the two new mascots of National Sport Day! Khazaz and Odaynah, whose names are references to the proud Qatari tradition, are a male and female wild desert hare: they embody the spirit of the country and its customs; they are also sport lovers, and they will invite all National Sport Day participants to join them in running, jumping, walking and playing sports. Khazaz is 13 years old and has an ambitious, curious and vivacious personality that leads him to a desire to learn through sport. Odaynah, is 15 years old and wants sport and the health benefits it produces to be a vehicle for a peaceful world and a prosperous community. The Mascots have been designed by Classic Dream, a company that applied its knowledge of national culture and its pride in being Qatari to the development of the characters of Khazaz and Odaynah. The National Sport Day Mascots will play an active role during the events on February 12, and are sure to be a hit with kids. They will also be featured in a colouring book for kids and a magazine, and will continue to promote Sports for All in the future as well.

Venues and Locations


The 2013 National Sport Day will take place in some of the most iconic locations across the country. A Sports Zone will be set up near the Doha Corniche between February 12 and 16, while on February 12 activities will take place in the following locations: QOC Sports Zone Doha Corniche Museum of Islamic Art Park Sports Clubs and Federations Aspire Zone Olympic Parks Katara (Cultural Village) Al Refaa Street Industrial Areas

QOC Sports Zone The Sports Zone, set on the Corniche, is one of the main hubs of the National Sport Day and will be open for five days (February 12 to 16), allowing everyone to have a chance to try its numerous activities. The Sports Zone programme features all participating national federations allowing individuals to try their hand at popular sports such as athletics, tennis, football and many others. Doha Corniche The Corniche is a 14 km promenade that follows the sweep of the bay. Popular with joggers, walkers, roller-bladers, picnickers and photographers, the paved and landscaped Corniche is the focal point for spectacular events and firework displays. One of the main locations of the National Sport Day, the Corniche hosts the Sports Walk and the VIP Walk and make perfect use of its waterside location by being the venue for the rowing and sailing events. Museum of Islamic Art Park The Museum of Islamic Art is a world-class collecting institution which preserves, studies and exhibits masterpieces spanning three continents and 13 centuries. Situated by the Museum, the new seafront MIA Park is nearly 280,000-square-meter (68-acre), crescentshaped and designed by Pei Partnership Architects of New York. The MIA Park includes about three kilometers of lit pedestrian pathways shaded by native palm trees. MIA Park is conveniently located right off the Corniche Road through the Port Road entrance. Visitors may access the park through the parking area of the Museum of Islamic Art or they may park their vehicles at a new parking area adjacent to the Doha Port. The Museum of Islamic Art Park is the host venue for the road cycling event.

12 Sports Clubs Around the country, sports clubs for all ages and abilities are opening their doors to the public for special events, taster sessions and fun activities. With offers including a wide range of sports, there is something for everyones taste! Aspire Zone The Aspire Zone, also known as Doha Sports City, is a 250-hectare (2.5 square kilometers) sporting complex located in Al Waab district of Doha. It was established as an international sports destination in 2003 and in the following year an educational center for the development of sporting champions (the ASPIRE Academy for Sports Excellence) was opened. The complex contains several sporting venues and a state-of-the-art double indoor sports hall. The Aspire Run and the Walk to Remember take place at the Aspire Zone, alongside the School Olympics Programme. The Aspire Indoor Hall, instead, plays host to a range of sport activities reserved for ladies, including football, volleyball, basketball and handball. Olympic Parks The Olympic Parks are exciting new developments created to serve the community of Qatar. Barzan Olympic Park was inaugurated on 29 April 2012 to be the first Olympic park in the state of Qatar. The newly opened park reflects the keenness of the state of Qatar to achieve ambitions of Qatari people to have more recreational facilities. The park includes green areas, restaurants, kids zone, two football playgrounds, two tennis courts, basketball court, mosque, swimming pool, cycling track, fountains, walking lanes and restrooms. Katara Katara Cultural Village is the home of many cultural institutions that make up the social fabric of modern Qatar. Set in a beautiful location between the Pearl and Dohas West Bay, Katara features a full programme of cultural activities, operas and courses; the area also features several restaurants catering to all tastes and cuisines. On National Sport Day, Katara is one of the main activity centres with several sports federations and private companies hosting events, and a programme of initiatives organised by Katara itself. Al Refaa Street Private organisations have been offered the opportunity to book a space in the activity area in Al Refaa street in order to organise programmes that promote a healthy and active lifestyle. 22 booths are being set up by private companies, allowing participants to take part in a range of different events to suit everyones taste.

Sports: Athletics Is an Olympic Sport since 1896 (for men) and 1928 for women and, along with Boxing and Wrestling, is one of the sports that connects the ancient Games with the modern Olympics. Athletics has evolved to include a hugely varied assortment of sporting challenges for men and women of all ages. The complete list now includes track and field events, road running races, cross country races, mountain running, walking, throwing, jumping and combined events. All thrive on the challenge of ones rivals and the joy of self-improvement. The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) is the sport international governing body while Qatar Association of Athletics Federation (QAAF) is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion. 14 Basketball athletes on court are almost flying! Basket is a game that needs an incessant flow of action that demands complex and high speed teamwork. Inspiration, spontaneity and trickery are the words that best describe the game. Basketball is played with two teams of five players on a hard, flat court. Hoops are mounted high on a backboard at opposite ends of the court. The main objective of the game is to score the most baskets by shooting the ball into the opposing teams hoop. The winning team is the one that has scored the most points at the end of the game. A popular variant is 3x3 basketball, which is increasingly becoming a key motor for the development of the sport. One of the biggest strengths of 3x3 is its simplicity both in terms of rules and in terms of required facilities. It comprises of two teams, each team consists of four players, of whom three are on the court at any given time, plus one coach. The game is played on half of a FIBA regulation court, with one basket. The game is divided into two periods of 5 minutes each. The winner is the first team to score 33 or more points. If neither team reaches 33 points at the end of regulation, the team with the highest score wins, as in regular basketball. Canoeing is divided in two disciplines, the Sprint and the Slalom. The events are designated by a letter (K for kayak and C for canoe) and a number (for the number of athletes per boat). Kayakers paddle facing the front, and are competing in races comprise of heats, semi finals & finals. The competition course for the Sprint is similar to the rowing one. Slalom competition, on the other hand, is like watching people flung into a gigantic washing machine. The athlete needs to become one with their boat, battling the rough waters. Both disciplines demands strength, courage, quickness of thought and are very spectacular. ICF, the International Canoe Federation, is the sport international governing body while the Qatar Sailing & Rowing (QSF) is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion. 15 Cycling has a diverse audience and viewers. It offers the latest design and newest materials, speed and endurance. Cycling includes a variety of races; from sprints, middle distances and endurance, all against all, individual time trials, individual & team pursuit and chases and point races. Road races have riders starting together in a bunch and riding over long courses of varying distances with the first across the line declared the winner. The individual time trial is usually raced over 40-50km with the riders setting off individually at regular intervals (every one minute) with the competitor completing the course in the fastest time declared the winner. Team time trials have a similar principle as the individual time trial, but these events are raced by teams of a minimum of three and a maximum of four riders cycling as a team and setting off at regular intervals (every three minutes). Football is one of the worlds most popular sports. It is played between two teams of 11 players with the objective of putting the ball into the opponents goal by either kicking or heading it. Only goalkeepers can use their hands. A game lasts for 90 minutes, divided into two halves of 45 minutes each. The team that scores the most goals wins the match. A hugely popular variant is 5x5 football, which sees two teams of five players competing on an artificial pitch (indoor or outdoor) of reduced dimensions. Both goals and balls are smaller and players are not allowed to enter the goalkeepers area, while the match is made up of two periods of 20 minutes each. Women artistic was included in the programme in 1928; rhythmic in 1984 and trampoline in 2000. At the highest level, the athletes of Gymnastics offers the illusion that the laws of gravity can be

16 escaped. It is a sport that requires immense self discipline, grace and, in the case of artistic gymnastics, courage, great strength and preternatural spatial awareness. Artistic (the classic form of the sport) involves fixed pieces of equipment plus mens rings. In Trampoline, the athletes repeatedly launches themselves to heights of up to ten meters and thus are performing acrobatic maneuvers. Rhythmic, is a spectacular discipline which combines elements of acrobatics & dance with music (no vocals). Federation International de Gymnastique (FIG) is the sport international governing body while Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF) is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion. Women competition was introduced in 1976. Handball is a team-based (2 teams of seven players), sport requiring great skill and fast pace. It requires ball handling talent (pass, troughs, catch, control) while an excessive body contact is permitted. The match is played in a court of 40mx 20m with a 3m (wide) goal; and has a duration of two 30 minutes halves separated in two 15minutes intervals. The winner of the match is the one with the more goals. International Handball Federation (IHF) is the sport international governing body while Qatar Handball Federation (QHF) is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion. Rowing is a sport that requires a colossal amount of training and an ability to endure immense physical pain. Rowers face backwards and a tactical and psychological advantage is gained by being in the front; consequently an explosive start. The competition is simple. In all events, up to 8 boats are racing side by side in lanes (marked in buoys) over a straight distance (varies, with the Olympic to be 2000m). Competition features different boat classes, based on the number of individuals in each crew and the rowing technique. FISA, Federation Internationale des Societes dAviron is the sport international governing body while Qatar Sailing & Rowing (QSF) is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion.

The sport retains much of the glamour of its high society origins while it offers a complex and compelling spectacle, combining tactical sophistication and athleticism with the unpredictability of the wind & waves. Sailing categories are open to men & women and include different types of classes like Windsurfing, Laser, 470, Star Finn and 49er. The competition is staged in marked courses on lakes or open water. In general, sailing races fall into two categories - fleet racing and match. Fleet racing involves all competing boats racing against each other at the same time. Match racing is where two boats compete one-on-one. ISAF, the International Sailing Federation is the sport international governing body while Qatar Sailing & Rowing (QSF) is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion. Qatari shooter, Nasser Al Attiyah, one of the sport legends, during the London 2012 Olympic Games won the bronze medal in mens Skeet competition. Shooting is a sport that is all about intense self-absorption, static posture and micro movements of the trigger finger. The sport events are the Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun with the competitors to shoot small fixed circular targets (divided into rings) in Pistol & Rifle from different distances and positions; while in the shotgun events (trap shooters are moving into 5 positions and the skeet 8 positions) the athletes are shooting flying clay targets. ISSF, International Shooting Sport Federation is the sport international governing body while Qatar Shooting Federation is the national federation responsible for the sport development & promotion. 18 Table Tennis Is an Olympic sport since 1988. Is is a sport that in a high level has the speed and intensity of a martial art. It is so fast that the ball flies with a speed of over 70km, making it hard to follow, keeping this pace for extended periods of time. It is a sport of tactics, all about sending the opponent in the wrong direction, mentally as well as physically. Table tennis is played between two (singles) or four players (doubles). Players use small racquets to hit a small white or orange ball back and forth across a table divided by a net. Players take turns to hit two serves in a row, and win a point if their opponent fails to return the ball onto the table. The first player to score eleven points wins the game, and the match is won by the first player to win the required number of games, either best of five or seven. Tennis is a fast, intense and intimate sport, a great spectacular. Players are competing in singles or doubles matches in a competition area 23.7m long by 8.2m wide separated in the middle by a net. The goal in tennis is to hit the ball over the net, landing within the confines of the court, and preventing the opponent from being able to hit the ball back. If 100m run meets the Olympic Games motto; CITIUS (faster) and high jump the ALTIUS (higher), the sport of weightlifting, unquestionable represents the FORTIUS (stronger). The sport provides one of the most theatrical stages in the competitions. At the Olympic Games the sport involves two disciplines; the Snatch (no arms rest phase) and the Clean & Jerk (rest of arms at the shoulder height) with the athletes competing in different weight categories with three attempts in each. Speed of execution, explosivity along with endless strength defines a great weightlifter.
