It was January 9 when our section (IV-17 BLIS) started our in- house on the job training (OJT)

in PNU library. We were grouped by twos and assigned in different sections of the library. Candy: my partner and I were assigned at the Arts and Social Sciences Section. Our supervisor was Miss Bernadette Valle, the librarianincharged in the said section. We were filled with mix emotions during our first day of duty. Here comes again the new in our college life. We had a feeling of excitement because of the new applications we could learn and also because its the first time we wear our uniforms foe our OJT. We were proud because lots of other students praise us. They said that we have a very good uniform. We were nervous because its time to apply what we have learned for 3 years of studying library and information science. But not that much because some of us already experienced the library works in PNU library as student assistants. The only difference is that we are earning that time and simple works are assigned to us. After our second subject, we went to our designated section for our first day of OJT (January 9). Miss Valle oriented my partner and me about the Arts and Social Sciences Section. She first asked us our expectations in our one-week OJT in the library. We told that we are expecting to do what we learned in our class and also to learn other things related to our profession. After that, she told us her expectations on us as PNU students and assured that shell treat us professionally. She gave us three criteria on the services in the library. These are the appearance, attitude and accessibility. She told us that we should always prioritize the users of the library and always consider the goals of the mother institution. She also gave us her criteria on our performance as OJT students. These were the (1) appearance or how we deal the task we are about to do and how we act professionally all the time; (2) cooperation or how we deal with other persons in the library such as librarian and student assistants; (3) interpersonal relationship or the way we deal with users; (4) punctuality or how we value time, and lastly (5) attitude or the way we accept the task given to us. She also allowed us to familiarize the collection.

After the orientation, we went to the collection area in order for us to familiarize the collection; what are the subjects available, how they are arranged and also she told us the policies in that section and in the whole library. On our second day (January 10) in ASSS, Ms. Valle gave us an exam to see what we know, how we see things about the library and what is/are our principles in a certain situations. Some of the questions given were the proper arrangement of call numbers. There were also essay questions. These essay questions were about the three things or resources or things that we think we should consider in running the library, our perspective in LIS now that we are in fourth year and our reactions in the news about the in demand courses of today where library and information science is included. After checking the first part of the exam, we discussed each essay question to know each others opinion about them. We agree that we should consider first the staff, the budget and the materials in running the library. Then both of us gave our own perspective about library and information science. We have different explanations but it turned out to the same perspective: that library and information science is not just a course to be studied, but its like a computer with lots of information stored that are needed to be updated all the time. And its not just a work; its a profession to be proud of. We also have different perspectives on the news about the in demand courses of today but we all have the same feeling of happiness. The remaining hours of our duty that day were used for shelving. It was a tiring work because we found out that the collection was not too organized so we decided to do shelf reading. Shelf reading is done to ensure that the books were arranged properly. It also help us to familiarized the collection. Ms. Valle gave us a lecture about indexing on the third day of our duty (January 11). Indexing is a process of identifying, analyzing, organizing, etc. all important keywords in a document for easy retrieval of information, and to identify specific reference sources. There are four types of indexes according to type of form of material to be indexed. They are the book index, periodical index, newspaper index and audiovisual index. We focused on indexing newspapers. Using our notes last quarter, we discussed the contents of newspaper index.

After the discussion, we had our hands on activity. We indexed the newspaper clippings. Our notes last quarter about indexing served as our guide in the process. It was a little bit easy process for us because the subjects and other information needed were already provided. We just need to arrange them. But still, it was confusing because we couldnt find some information in the clippings so we asked Ms. Valle for that. Since the indexes need to be encoded, we decided that at morning, one will encode and the other will index the newspaper clippings, and on the afternoon, well exchange our task. On Thursday (January 12), we first have the lecture about weeding. Weeding, as defined is the process of getting rid of worn-out, unused, unneeded and inappropriate materials in the library. Usually, the objectives of weeding are to keep the book collection responsive and up-todate, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the library book collection in terms of patrons needs and to ensure that the information needs of the people using the book collection are met in timely and economical manner. We learned that each library have there own criteria that serves as guide for the said process. They depend on the librarys goals. The librarian should ensure that weeding is done to support the goals of the library as well as the institution. Ms. Valle showed us the PNU librarys guide for weeding process as an example for us to fully learn the weeding process. In our library, there are three main criteria for weeding. They are the physical condition which means the physical appearance of the book, qualitative worth and quantitative worth. The PNU library according to their weeding guideline should weed books which are already outdated and did not use for at least five years. Books can also be weeded if there are multiple copies that are unneeded. We learned that we can consider a material outdated not just because of its copyright date but also in terms of its usefulness and information contents. After the lecture, we are assigned to perform the weeding in the book collection. We found that weeding is a very difficult process to do as a librarian, especially when the institutions where we belong do not have a large budget for the library. We should analyze the book systematically using the criteria as guide. On the last day of our duty in our library, we discuss the reference service. Ms. Valle asked our ideas about reference service. She taught us how to be friendly in the clients of the

library and told us that there are different kinds of users that we will encounter outside. We need to be patient and understanding but always act professionally all the time. After the discussion, she gave us a review test. We borrowed the reviewer for licensure exam for librarians. There are lots of questions that we did not know the answers. There are people we did not know who and what they had contributed in the field of librarianship. But the question we really cant forget was who introduced the library of congress? We really thought that it was Thomas Jefferson, but we were wrong. It was Herbert Putnam. Until now we cant believe that it was he not Jefferson. But we searched it and it really says he was. Thanks that it was asked, now we know. Our training here in our library was a memorable one. We learned not only the applications but also lots on information we did not know lately. We learned different skills that cant be learn trough lectures. Now, we are ready to have our OJT outside the PNU. We are excited and we know that Ill learn a lot on those three prestigious institutions.
