The White Mountain National Forest is pleased to announce today that the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire has been included in the U.S. Mints America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The White Mountain National Forest coin depicts Mount Chocorua, the easternmost peak of the Sandwich Range, framed by birch trees. The nearly 3,500foot peak rising from the rugged landscape is surrounded by pristine lakes and thick forestland. I gave the question some thought and found that I had the answer after thinking about the weather and food conditions over the past two years.

Awonderful picture of one of our local bobcats. The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a North American mammal of the cat family Felidae, appearing during the Irvingtonian stage of around 1.8 million years ago (AEO).[3] With 12 recognized subspecies, it ranges from southern Canada to northern Mexico, including most of the continental United States. The bobcat is an adaptable predator that inhabits wooded areas, as well as semidesert, urban edge, forest edges, and swampland environments. It persists in much of its original range, and populations are healthy. With a gray to brown coat, whiskered face, and black-tufted ears, the bobcat resembles the other species of the mid-sized Lynx genus. It is smaller on average than the Canada lynx, with which it shares parts of its range, but is about twice as large as the domestic cat. It has distinctive black bars on its forelegs and a black-tipped, stubby tail, from which it derives its name. - John Green Photo

A Walk In The Woods____________By David Falkenham, UNH Cooperative Extension Grafton County Forester
Wildlife populations follow cycles based on annual weather conditions and food availability, particularly food availability in the fall. If there is a good fall mast crop such as acorns, apples, seeds and/or beechnuts then most animals enter winter with sufficient fat reserves to survive no matter what weather we encounter from December through April. This enables reproduction and offspring survival rates to be high and subsequently there is a temporary rise in animal populations. However when there is a mast crop failure, animals suffer more during winter months, starvation rates are higher and offspring survival rates drop, hence a short term drop in population. During the fall of 2011 we had a tremendous mast crop. Many Story continues on page A2

There was also a bumper crop of beechnuts and seeds, both hardwood and conifer seeds. they often turn to us for short term sustenance. The summer and fall of 2012 were not good food years at all. Acorns, apples, seed, beechnuts and many berries were pretty scarce. With extra mouths to feed and not much food in nature the animals turned to us to see what we had to offer. This often results in sometimes uncomfortably close encounters with animals in our back yards. There were a large number of garbage can raids and a record number of chicken coop raids this summer, particularly by mother bears with cubs. This often turned into a tragic turn of events when mother bears were shot and the cubs were orphaned.

This was immediately followed by last years mild winter. As a result of the abundance of food followed by a weak winter, reproduction and young survival rates for most animals were off the charts. When there is a rise in animal populations these animals must find food somewhere and if nature doesnt provide the extra food needed to support animal populations, our critters must find alternate sources of On a less tragic and only slightly food or perish. squirrel population has to eat as well hence they turn to us because we are so willing to keep filling the bird feeders. The solution to the bears is to put electric fence around your chickens. The solution to the marauding squirrels is to just keep filling that bird feeder until spring comes. There is no point in complaining about it, especially since we invited them. This is not to say that animals need our help for survival. They dont, in fact they would naturally be better off without us. Animals have evolved over thousands of years to survive the seasons with healthy populations; anything humans offer in the way of food is simply an un-natural and often detrimental interruption to their life cycle.

OBITUARY

Warren, NH- Kyle Fergus Mooney, 18, of Lake Tarleton Road, died on Friday, January 25, 2013, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH following a long battle with leukemia. Kyle was a boy who fought his way to become a man and was stricken again by a mighty sword. His fight was honorable and will always inspire. God bless his strong heart. He was one tough hombre. Kyle was born in Lebanon on July 29, 1994, to Fergus T. and Lori H. (Owen) Mooney. He was a graduate of the Woodsville High School, Class of 2012 and enjoyed working as a self-employed carpenter. Kyle had been accepted at the University of New Hampshire and was to begin in the fall semester of 2013. Kyle was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan and a fan of anyone who would beat the Yankees! While at Woodsville High School, he was a member of the golf team(and was captain in 2011), the ski team (and was captain in 2012) , and the baseball team. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing guitar, driving, snowmobiling, fishing, dirt biking and, most importantly, hanging with his family and friends.

Two seperate candlelight vigils were held in honor of Warren resident, Kyle Mooney, who died following a long battle with leukemia at the age of 18. The vigil above was held at the Warren, NH Town Common on January 31st with well over 100 people present and the one in Woodsville was held a couple days earlier, with many attending that also. The inset above, shows Kyles parents, Fergus and Lori at the event. Kyle was extremely liked throughout the community and far beyond. He will be sorely missed by many. You can read Kyles obituary on this page. - Bryan Flagg Photos Burial will be in the Warren Village Cemetery at a later date. dont remember recent years, but this year seems to have passed a tipping point. Way too many commercials! Seriously, it was like a play or two and then another block of ads (no pun intended unlike above) they just kept coming! In a classic DJ voice: Hey, well be right back with more commercials after this brief sports interruption. Feh! It starts young! Several vehicles were damaged after a 6-year-old girl determined to get to her father, took her mothers car for a joyride. The girl intended to drive to see her father, but struck several cars before coming to an unplanned stop. Police say the girl took the car while her mother was asleep. [pittsburgh.cbslocal.com] Sigh. Finally, speaking of starting young.... A man was stabbed multiple times by his 13-year-old stepdaughter after an argument over a cell phone. Investigators said the 47-year-old victim would not let the girl use the phone so she stabbed him in the back several times. The stepfather got away and managed to call for an ambulance at a nearby store. Police said he was taken to University Hospital in critical but stable condition. The girl was arrested and would be charged in the stabbing. [KSAT.com] Double sigh! Later.

Northcountry News Picture Of The Week

Bermans Bits
by Dave Berman
Incessantly scouring the universe for the weird, the wacky, and the stupid so you dont have to. Greetings, and thanks for joining me for another week. First, justice isnt really blind its just asleep. A Russian judge has resigned after a video apparently showed him asleep during a trial that ended with him sentencing the defendant to five years. Critics of the Russian justice system, which has a notoriously high conviction rate, were outraged when the video purporting to show Judge Yevgeny Makhno sleeping through a defense lawyers speech. The businessman sentenced to five years hard labor will have a new trial after an appeal was lodged over the unjust sentence. [Reuters] Such a judge here would probably sue and get a book/movie deal. Next, one very smelly sperm whale secretion may soon make one lucky British beachcomber a very happy man. Ken Wilman said he had been walking along a beach in northern England when his dog, Madge, discovered a hard, soccer ball-sized piece of smelly rock. She wouldnt leave it alone. I picked it up and it smelt horrible so I knocked it with my walking stick and a small lump came off, he told Sky News television. I put both pieces back on the beach but something in the back of my mind told me it might be something unusual. One Google search later and Wilman realized that Madge had found ambergris, a waxy byproduct of sperm whale digestion that has traditionally been used in perfumes, spices, and medicines and can fetch large sums of money. He said he immediately drove back to the beach to find the ambergris. He said he has been offered 50,000 ($68,000) for the stuff. [Yahoo] Gee, if only my vomit were worth something! Finally, big news - he said; she said. A Florida woman was arrested after she hit her husband on the head with a frying pan, police said. Fort Pierce police said officers were called to a domestic disturbance at the home and found the wife sitting outside on the ground. She told officers she hit her husband in self-defense because he pulled her hair. She claimed they were drinking (Liquid Stupid Pills) when she told her husband that she wanted to go to bed, so he grabbed her by the hair, smacked her across the face and threw her to the ground. However, the husband told police he was sleeping on the sofa when his wife came into the living room and hit him over the head with a frying pan because he was not in the bed with her. Police said her husband didnt want to go to the hospital because it would take too much time and he had to go to work in the morning, so he just wanted to go to sleep. [www.wpbf.com] I didnt know people actually used frying pans to attack time to ban them! Some intellectual humor (punny): (1) I changed my iPods name to Titanic and threw it into the pool. Its syncing now. (2) I know a guy whos addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop any time. (3) This girl said she recognized me from the vegetarian club, but Id never met herbivore. (4) What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. (5) All the toilets in New Yorks police stations have been stolen. The police have nothing to go on. Bonus: A cartoonist was found dead in his home. Details are sketchy I am beaming with pride. I used to do Yahoo Answers. I was just notified two of my answers were selected as the best answers. Woo-hoo! However, I did a double take when I saw they were from four years ago, which leaves me with more questions than answers. A final Super Bowl comment: I

Well that is where that fabulous part of our anatomy comes in ...the ankle! We focus so much on bending our knees in skiing that often the ankle is left locked. It is actually possible in a ski boot to bend the knees yet not flex out ankles. Yet it is pretty much impossible to flex the ankle and not bend the knee. If we focus on flexing our ankle forward our knees will automatically follow suit. And that way we can get ourselves up to the front of our foot, feel the front of our ski and get into the drivers seat once more. To train our muscles and feet to recognize and feel these sensations we can do some simple exercises which include hopping in between our turns on easy terrain. Stepping through your turns is another way that we can feel that ankle flex. Any thing we do to keep the ankles flexing and feel the tip of the ski will help us out. Last week we were on the simplest of hikes: around North Conways Echo Lake, up the Bryce Path, right at the intersection in the col toward Cathedral Ledge; double back and pass the intersection of the Bryce Path and climb up the northern ledges of Whitehorse Ledge before topping out. No matter how much we had to watch where we were stepping with MircoSpikes or paws on the way up the ledges, the Whitehorse Ledge Trail that heads down from the top toward the west before ultimately curving north was an easy trundle for us. Nobody Asked, Just My Opinion____________________________ Letter To The Editor____________________

Hello once again folks! Well, a couple weeks ago, Puxataney Phil stated it was going to be an early spring. So for around here, that must mean mud season will show up a bit before April! Maybe! We listen to our politicians, so I truly have no problem listening to a groundhog from Pennsylvania. At times, there just seems to be much more credibility. Also, before I forget, a very Happy Valentine's Day to all of our friends and readers! Hope you all have a good one. February also means that it is once again the Anniversary of the day Maura Murray went missing and has not been heard from since. Maura was last seen at approximately 7pm when her car was found off Route 112 in Haverhill, NH. That was February 9, 2004. Here it is, February 2013, now nine years later and still, Maura has not been found or heard from since that day! I often wonder, as do many others I am sure, of just what truly happened that day! As with many others who have followed the case, I have played it over and over in my mind. The what ifs, the how comes, the how coulds and of course the whys! And as many times as I play what could have happened over and over in my mind, there are as many different ways it could have played out. I for one have never thought she just sort of went off the road, walked down the street and disappeared in to some sort of Bermuda Triangle. I suppose anything is possible, but some ity to prove. Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, John 16:7 says, I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. I KNOW THE LORD IS SPEAKING TO ME when I stop listening to sounds from the world that feed my sense of pride and ambition. Instead I fall quiet, tune in to God's great world around me. and actively listen. Sometimes nature speaks, reminding me of what God wants me to know. And sometimes, the Spirit speaks, awakening my conscience, reminding me of failures, stirring my compassion and sense of justice, aligning me with God's will. I cannot control the voice of God or how it comes. I can only control my "ears" --my readiness to listen and quickness to respond. When God does choose to speak in miraculous ways today, they will serve not as the foundation for us to hear from God, but as confirmation of the Holy Spirit's leading and the message of Scripture. Have you taken some time alone with God, and listen?! Proverbs 20:27, The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord. Maybe it's time.God love you all... Submitted by Jeannine Bartlett

National Wildlife Week is March 18-24 this year. The theme is Branching Out for Wildlife, with a focus on how wildlife depend upon trees for survival. Pictured: A pair of Northern Cardinals on a tree branch. - Credit iStock Photo NWF has adopted the goal of planting 75,000 trees across the country. School and youth groups can apply to host a tree planting event with NWF, which will provide native trees adapted to the local climate, as well as tree guards, shovels, mulch, watering supplies and gloves. Beyond National Wildlife Week, all year long NWF will feature detailed information on their website about different types of wildlife that live in or are dependent upon trees across the country. Young people are encouraged to stay on the lookout for wildlife near them throughout National Wildlife Week and log their sightings accordingly and can share them online via NWFs interactive Wildlife Watch Map. The Branching Out for Wildlife Mega-Poster is comprised of smaller sections that each graphically display the different parts of a treeroots and soil, forest floor, trunk, branches and leaves/fruit/flowersand the wildlife that frequent them. At five and a half feet tall, the complete mega-poster is a real attention grabber in any room. Anyone can print out the sections for free as they are all available via the NWF website as PDF downloads. way NWF educates kids and inspires a lifelong love of nature. Adventures in Homesteading

by Beth Weick

But with seeds arriving in the mail and thoughts of spring beginning to tease at my mind, the wish to grow something, to have my hands in dirt, and to foster delicate seedlings into robust plants is taking over. As of this weekend, the nursery has expanded. Now the volumes of books also occupying this lofty shelf, plus the antique ice axe and vintage cheese box, have been pushed close to the end-wall in order to accommodate a few extra planters. Were starting small, as the indoor temperature can dip towards freezing on these cold nights. A couple of chard plants, spinach, and more kale our desire for greens is strong, and these cold-hardy plants are our best bet for germination given the harsh conditions of the cabin. A few herbs, too, are seeded in the name of optimism. Each plant has a four- or six-inch pot all to itself Im not anticipating these plants to go outdoors anytime soon. For the cold nights, we have plastic bags to top each plant with, a mini greenhouse of sorts to help these young sprouts develop. They are carefully watered when theres no threat of freezing, and set upon the kitchen table for extra sun during the day. With luck and care, well be eating our first bites just as the gardens outdoors become ready for planting.

Thoughts of Spring Begin to Stir

Tenth Dalton Gang Biathlon Event held on Miller Road. Our 10th Biathlon will be held February 16th & 17th. We have a one and a half mile trail through the woods with no grooming except snowshoes. There are four firing stations along the route with campfires and score keepers at each station. Two shots are fired with muzzle loading rifles. The last station is on the range where folks can observe and three shots are fired for a total of nine shots. Scoring is done with time and accuracy being the prime factors. Participants are primitively dressed and travel on wooden snow shoes. If you are of a modern mind set and shoot inline's you can still participate in a separate class. We also offer a Black Powder Pistol category. Hot foods and drinks are available in the club house all day both days for a nominal fee. Pre-registration forms are available on line at www.thedaltongangofnh.org and can be printed and mailed to the address provided. Pre-registration is $10. At the door $15. Questions or Entry form call: 802-229-2062 Yes, it is still winter, undeniably. Despite these tremendous thaws and the lack of deep snow, Jack Frost is still out-and-about. Short days and cold temperatures continue to dominate. And yetthis latest thaw laid bare patches of ground and freed the pungent smell of moist dirt. And so the itch for spring has landed lightly on my shoulder. Inside the cabin weve kept alive two kale plants and some cutting celery. They are perched on a shelf above our rafters, where they can catch both the streaks of sun and the lingering heat from the woodstove. These plants add a wonderful aliveness and fresh color to our home, not to mention their role as all-natural indicators of just how cold it gets inside (when its below freezing inside, the kale begins to droop). And best of all: once or twice a week we enjoy a touch of greenery in our meals.

Keeping Each Other Well

American Chestnut Trees and Wind Farms
The American Chestnut tree was wiped out initially by the unknowing import of infected Asian nursery stock in the late 19th C. The fungus girdled the inner bark with its mycelium, cutting off the trees water and nutrient supplies. Despite all efforts to stop it from spreading, the 1938 hurricane gave the disease the final stronghold that could not be broken. As a result, Appalachia lost a major source of its sustenance and livelihood. There, many chestnut trees grew 120 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter. Chestnut mast was sometimes more than a foot deep in the fall and provided bountiful food for families and their animals, and a trading livelihood as well, according to Eric Rutgow in his book, American Canopy. The wood was also used for furniture, rail ties, tanning, and more. Loss of the tree impacted the countrys health and well being and was considered one of the worst ecological disasters in US history. Plant pathology was in its infancy and laws protecting trees came up against the same problems we face today as we attempt long range planning and regulation of energy, and with similar results. In New Hampshire, on the heels of Hydro Quebecs Northern Pass Project which threatens our forests, real estate, and livelihood, in addition to potential health problems, we now have another energy struggle with an equally glaring lack of long range planning threatening our state and our health. Residents were not prepared for the noise and the strobe lights for air safety that robbed them of quiet days and nights under the stars with the rest of wildlife, the reason people live in New Hampshire or vacation here. Wildlife habitat is being destroyed and we have another potential catastrophe in the cobweb of transmission lines the Wind Farms plan to erect. All this in a state whose normal weather includes ice storms, hurricanes and variable winds that continually blow down existing overhead lines, compromising road safety and homes. The grid planned for transmission looks like a giant cobweb girdling the entire state of NH. Wind Farms have big plans ahead. Like the American Chestnut tree fungus, the Wind Farms are the result of a foreign import. Nearly one quarter of the 16 billion dollar grant approved in renewable energy projects as of December, 2012, has gone to subsidiaries of some of the largest and already best situated, foreign energy companies. This program, according to the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, was ostensibly aimed at stimulating the US economy which it failed to do. The committee found that Iberdola, A US division of the Spanish parent company, was one of the largest 1603 grant-recipients.

Fairfield, NY is learning the hard way about the devastating effects of the Hardscrabble Wind Power on their community. Their people fell for the corporate hype to their demise. The American Chestnut tree fungus had entrenched itself before it could be stopped. Now is the time to be sure that each of our towns know what permitting wind power means in the long run if we want to prevent expensive bailout struggles later to save our way of life and the land we share with all life.
