CONSUMABLE QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

For your convenience, these position notations are listed here. Each is tied to a code used in the body of the tables which comprise the remainder of this book. The notes and codes listed below are also repeated throughout the book where applicable. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specification ANSI/AASHTO/AWS D1.5-95 Bridge Welding Code includes AASHTO/AWS Fracture Control Plan (FCP) for Nonredundant Members. Under this specification, Heat and Lot testing is not required if the welding consumable is produced under a continuing quality assurance program which has been audited and approved by ABS, Lloyds Register of Shipping, or ASME. Also, Diffusible Hydrogen Testing is not required as long as the Certificate of Conformance lists diffusible hydrogen testing results which meet the level required by the specification. American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approvals are issued subject to the Bureaus Rule requirement for Materials and Welding Part 2. Tests are conducted in the companys plant, under supervision of an ABS surveyor to determine if electrodes conform to ABS grades or AWS specifications previously judged satisfactory by ABS for welding vessels. The Bureau publishes a list of approved electrodes giving their class and approved operating positions for each size. Sometimes, where there is no approved specification, approval may be given on the basis that each individual shipyard or contractor will qualify the procedure and electrode subject to Part 2, Section 3, paragraph 2/3C.3.2.c. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has issued specifications covering construction of nuclear facilities. Each lot of welding consumables to be used must be individually tested to ASME SFA specifications. American Welding Society (AWS) specifications and classifications are established by the Society to provide standards for different types of electrodes throughout the industry. AWS does not test or approve any electrodes. The manufacturer certifies that their electrode conforms to a certain class. (See PCX.xx section for AWS classes for each electrode.) Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) approvals are based on tests witnessed by a CWB representative. Approvals listed in this booklet are for products manufactured in the USA. Products manufactured in Canada are approved separately. In general, CWB specifications are similar to AWS specifications. Copies of approvals are maintained in Cleveland and are available upon request. Department of Transportation (Bureau of Public Roads) requires that the contractor shall furnish a certified copy of a dated annual report of results of all pertinent required tests of AWS A5.1, A5.5, or other AWS specifications, as appropriate, made on electrode of the same class, size and brand and which was manufactured by the same process and with the same materials as the electrode being furnished for use on the project. Welding on main members shall be capable of producing weld metal having impact strength of at least 20 ft-lbs., Charpy V-notch at a temperature of 0F or below. These Certificates of Conformance to Requirements are available on request. Lloyds Register (LR), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Bureau Veritas (BV), Controlas, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NKK) issue approvals for electrodes used worldwide in shipbuilding, offshore structures and pressure vessels. Products approved under the rules of these classification societies require annual requalification under the supervision of their surveyors. TV (TUV) is a German agency very similar to ASME. Projects manufactured under TUV rules must be welded with consumable approved by TUV. Initial approvals are obtained based on testing completed under TUV supervision. Approvals are maintained subject to Quality Assurance audits completed every two years. U.S. Coast Guard has formally adopted the American Bureau of Shipping list of approved electrodes. Deutche Bahn (DB) is the approval agency for German railroads. Approvals are based on tests specified by DB, and witnessed by an authorized third party.

(1) Specification QQ-E-450a was cancelled by the General Services Administration effective December 24, 1985. Per their instructions, future

procurements should be made in accordance with AWS A5.1+. NOTE: Electrodes are tested by an authorized testing laboratory under supervision of military personnel. When tests shown conformity with military specification, approval is given and the electrode is placed on the government Qualified Products List (Q.P.L.) Periodic retesting is required under most electrode specifications. Certain specifications do not call for qualification and have no Q.P.L. Products supplied under military specifications must undergo lot or batch tests with each order. Such items are noted under Comments. Revision suffixes are not included herein because they do not appear on the Q.P.L. and have no bearing on qualification of the product. BR-41 REQUIRES THAT ALL ORDERS OR BIDS FOR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES MUST BE PROCESSED THROUGH THE FACTORY.

CONSUMABLE QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE SPECIAL CUSTOMER SERVICES

CUSTOM PRODUCT FORMULATIONS

Deposit Chemistry: Lincoln can develop a completely new electrode formula for your requirements. We have done this for practically every welding application you can think of; ranging from consumables for sheet metal applications to heavy fabrication projects. These customized products not only include carbon and low alloy steel products, but also stainless and hardfacing applications. Operating Characteristics: Even if you do not require special deposit chemistries, you may want to change a consumable from an operational standpoint. For example, we can tailor specific characteristics to improve bead appearance, reduce spatter and increase productivity.

TESTED MATERIALS
Pre-Tested Bonded Stock: If you need immediate access to pre-tested consumables, you can turn to Lincolns bonded stock warehouse which houses consumables that have been individually tested to meet many of the standard industry specifications. Each purchase is accompanied by a certified material test report confirming specific testing criteria you require. It is a very effective solution, saving both time and money.

SPECIAL PACKAGING
Bar Codes: Your companys bar code labels can be placed on consumable packages as small as one pound or as large as 1,000 pound reels or shipping pallets. Custom Packaging/Palletizing: Your special packaging requirements can be accommodated by Lincoln. We have created a wide variety of specially-sized packages such as a 3,200 pound flux bag designed for centralized flux distribution or two pound spools for MIG welding. Generic Wrapping: If you know you want the quality of Lincoln consumables, we can provide you with bulk quantities.

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAMS

CUSTOMER QUALITY REVIEW
1-Day Program (Second Day Optional) The Customer Quality Review Program is designed to offer our customers an opportunity to observe our excellent Quality Assurance System and see what makes our products superior. Examine for yourself how our unique Incentive Management concepts influence our commitment to quality Lincoln products. You will tour both our Cleveland Consumable Division facilities and see, first hand, our attention to detail that is inherent in each department. Later in the day, you have the choice of a Machine Division or a Robotic/Automatic Division tour. Our Guaranteed Cost Reduction (GCR) Program, which assists you in lowering welding fabrication costs and increases your productivity, will also be discussed.

MILITARY / NUCLEAR AUDITS

2-Day Program The Military and Nuclear Audit Program is an intensive, technical program designed to familiarize auditors with the specific details of Lincolns Quality Assurance System, including conformance to specifications. A visit through our operations will provide an in-depth look at all of Lincolns consumable manufacturing from a quality audit viewpoint. Also included in the visit will be Lincolns Metrology Laboratory, Heat Treatment facilities and both Destructive and Non-Destructive testing areas. The documentation related to our Quality Assurance System Elements and Special Order Records will be demonstrated. Sufficient time will be allocated to allow specific order documentation review and traceability.
