FEBRUARY 2013
Dear Parishioners

THE GAYTON GROUP OF PARISHES

It has felt rather strange stepping back into the editor role this month but rather nice in a way to be receiving emails from correspondents with whom I have not communicated for 12 months! Thank you to the wonderful people who stepped into the Distributor vacancies in the Dec/Jan issue so willingly. I would be grateful if you could spare a minute to look at page 18. Iain Thompson is leaving the magazine 'team' on 1st May 2013 and we would like to hear from someone in the Parish who could take on his role. Once the adverts have been allocated for the year, in January, there is very little to do thereafter. Please ring me if f you would like an informal chat about the role, on 01553 636275. Wishing you all the very best for 2013 Sarah (Renwick) The magazine is now also available on line at www.gaytongroupofparishes.org www.gaytonnews.co.uk Copy in by the 18th February, please. Delivery date is 1st March.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Lent that's when we give things up, isn't it? I used to give up speeding for Lent until I got points on my licence and decided to give speeding up for good. This year, Lent starts early: Ash Wednesday is on 13 February. But while Christians might be marking their foreheads with the ashes of repentance, and lots of people wonder what to cut out, everything else will be bursting out in new life; the birds singing fit to bust, and snowdrops, aconites and crocuses making bright splashes on the ground. And the day after Ash Wednesday? Valentine's Day! How can Lent be a time for giving up, when all nature is rejoicing? The Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke say that Jesus went into the wilderness and fasted for forty days. That's why we give up the things we find tempting. (I haven't ever managed to give up coffee). After forty days Jesus was hungry and the devil turned up and tried to persuade him to change stones into bread. The devil followed this with two more extravagant ideas: that Jesus should throw himself from the top of the Temple so that the angels would catch him, and that, if Jesus worshipped him, the devil would give him all the kingdoms of the world. Jesus rejected all these suggestions. Whether you believe the devil was there in person, or whether you think these ideas were going through Jesus's mind, what is clear is this: Jesus had gone into the wilderness to plan his future, and he rejected any ambition for worldly power and glory. Instead, as his work among the Jews showed, he decided to go out to people, help them and teach them, not as someone who was grander than they were, but as one with ordinary people, however sick, or poor, or young they might be. That's the other side of Lent, the side that fits with the birdsong and crocuses. Let's see how, like Jesus, we can go out to serve people in our communities, and leave the winter of indifference far behind. Why not live in the fast lane the Jesus way? Nell Steele, Lay Preacher

A year to remember'
What a fantastic year 2012 was! The Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee are things that will be remembered by young and old alike for years and years to come. But what a dreadful start it was for Ashwicken Church with the theft of our Eagle lectern. Sadly nothing more has been heard of it but the insurers settled very quickly and the necessary repairs to the damaged door were swiftly carried out. What to do with the insurance money was subject to much thought and as you know two ideas were put forward to replace our lost heritage with something that would enhance the Church. The Ashwicken Shell has already been featured in the magazine, creating lots of interest as it has been used for baptisms through the year. It makes the day just that little bit more special. Something that is more visible to everyone who visits the Church now is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee window that was installed in the porch in the week before Christmas. It is a splendid feature for our simple country Church showing the Queen's cipher (the Royal Crown and the Queen's initials).

And so a magnificent year came to a fitting end and a very sorry situation was redeemed by some things we can all enjoy and take pride in.

Can you spot who is walking up the path?

Leziate Parish Council

The Parish Council met on Thursday 6 December 2012.
th

Cllr. Murphy's County Council report stated that various highway issues had been addressed. After the Sibelco Liaison meeting Cllr. Crane was pleased to announce that MIN39 which is still within the MDF is not being pursued at the moment. Council will continue to monitor this. Sibelco has also undertaken to get rid of the encroaching gorse and repair some fencing on the permissive footpath parallel to East Winch Road. The Parish Council was sad to hear that the New Village hall build has been cancelled. Their thanks to Cllrs. Rosheen and Tony Crane were recorded for their tireless hard work in trying to get this scheme off the ground. The Parish Council meets next on 13th February 2013 at 7.30 in the Village Hall. All welcome.

The report from our PCSO was presented. No crimes had been reported in Ashwicken and no anti-social behaviour reported in the Parish since 15.11.12. Unfortunately there had been a report of theft of diesel from business premises in Leziate and a handbag left on a bench in Bawsey. We were disappointed to hear that residents had seen and heard scramble bikes in the area opposite Holt House Lane and this will be reported immediately to our PCSO. The PIM (Pre Inquiry Meeting) was held on 28th November, for the Public Inquiry into the proposed incinerator. Although a PIM is concerned with the formalities and the timetable of the Inquiry it was good to see that the Inspector genuinely wanted to hear from the residents of King's Lynn and gave them a chance to speak. However the acoustics were very bad and some of the 400 odd attendees had to leave the meeting early because of this issue. The Parish Council welcomed a new Parish Counciller, Alan Smith. Alan has a wealth of experience and we are all looking forward to working with him. Alan Smith has also taken over the role of Chair of Homewatch so will be reporting to the Parish Council Cllr. Beales sent a report from the Borough Council. He has taken on board the concerns about the Mart and the use of the Corn Exchange for the Public Inquiry and has raised the issue of shuttle buses and free parking as it is essential there is good public access.

Leziate WI
The December party meeting with 16 members was a very enjoyable occasion. Members brought delicious food and crackers were pulled, hats donned and jokes read out. The Village Hall's Christmas lights and decorations all looked lovely. The 2013 programme was finalised and looks like being an interesting year ahead. The serviette ring competition was won by Sylvia Webber, second was Mary Ryan. Time ran out for the Beetle Drive, which will held at a future meeting. Unfortunately the January meeting had to be cancelled because of heavy snow so the next meeting will be on 19 February. Sadly, President Eileen Baxter's husband David died on 4 January and our love and prayers go out to her. We all knew David, he was great fun to be with. Wendy Twite

EAST WINCH NEWS

Miss Ivy Bass; the little lady with a big heart
Over one hundred family, friends and neighbours gathered at the village hall on the 26th November 2012 to celebrate Ivy's 90th birthday. Originally from Sutton Bridge where her parents had a family farm they moved to Gayton before settling in East Winch in 1978. Ivy celebrated her special birthday with relatives from Australia and around the globe. Last year, she visited Australia, with her nephew, to see her brother Peter and family. They travelled many miles around Western Australia, a country she has been to before. Ivy's adventurous get up and go spirit, has also taken her to the U.S.A. to see family and friends. At home Ivy's passion is for sewing, gardening and cooking and she is a kind, helpful and caring parishioner and a wonderful inspiration to everyone who has had the pleasure of meeting and knowing her. You can see Ivy driving her little Nissan around the village off on some trip or errand. Ever willing to lend a helping hand by supporting the local church and other village events, she recently made an altar cloth for All Saints Church East Winch. Everyone at her party raised their glasses in a toast to Ivy, wishing her continued good health, happiness and many, many more happy birthdays.

East Winch Parish Council Meeting 7 January 2013

Parish plan: Nell Steele reported that the village is still looking for someone to lead the team to find out what East Winch people's priorities are. She thought councillors may have to approach someone and the clerk suggested the Council consider taking responsibility, even though it is not normal practice. Keith Harrod said that while he was delivering 30mph stickers, many people had remarked that they wanted a lower speed limit on the A47. Open Forum: Terry Robertson informed the meeting that the Village Hall had received a grant of 5,000 to improve the kitchen and work would be starting at the end of January. The Parish Clerk was asked to looking into an additional salt bin to be placed near the hall. The PCSO: Sally Callaby reported one offence, a break in, in the village in December. Jennifer Lamb's new Homewatch Group was flourishing. Sally stressed the importance of such groups and said that anyone who considering starting up a Homewatch Group was welcome to come to one of Jennifer's meetings. Signs had to be put up marking the Homewatch area. The Council voted to pay for one and to make up any shortfall in the fundraising effort to pay for the other. Sally also promoted the infra-red shed or house alarms available from the police. She said they were efficient and cost only 7.50. Three were sold on the spot! Anyone interested should ring 101 and leave a contact number so that Sally can return the call.

Incinerator: Nell Steele had been to a joint meeting of several parish councils opposing the Cory Wheelabrator application, and reported that they were evaluating which of several topics to concentrate on. The Council voted by a majority to donate 100 towards expert legal advice in presenting the case. The budget: Council voted, again by a majority, to increase the precept to 10,000. The difficulty was that the Council would need extra funds to part pay for village improvements but there had been no survey of priorities done. Grants are presently available for minor road improvements, such as the construction of a trod, or for playground equipment, but usually for no more than 50% of the cost.

Change of date
The weekend to celebrate the life of Elizabeth has been changed to 27/28 July 2013 from June. Visitors will be able to learn more about her and look at the history of St Celias church. You may also like to share with us your recollections of the church and village. The Church service on 14 February remains unchanged. Norfolk Churches Trust, who care for St Cecilia's, are kindly supporting these events. We do hope you will join us at both events. Contact: charlottepaton@onetel.com

Parish Magazine Adverting

Our advertising space is filled every year by the end of January and is its sole source of funding. We have improved the layout of the pages and the display to last for some time to come so the advertising function for the magazine is pretty straightforward. We need someone to replace Iain Thompson who is leaving the team on 1st May 2013. Iain is very happy to be available to his successor with as much help and advice as is needed. The main part of the job is complete for 2013 as the adverts are all in place so it is a good time to join. Benefits: a laptop, membership of an efficient, informal team of volunteers and an opportunity to get involved in one aspect of village life. For more information, please ring 01553 636275. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you. Sarah Renwick

Now we hear that we are in danger for heavy snow and blizzards for the weekend. If that is so it brings back memories of 1983 when heavy snow was followed by strong northerly winds. All the snow was blown off the fields filling in Broad Drove to the tops of the hedges. We were stranded up here for several days until Mr.Coe dug us out with his machinery. The stubble field behind our house will be sugar beet this year. Turkey manure is being spread to help with the fertility of the land. This has attracted some two thousand sea gulls which presumably are feeding on the muck (or the invertebrates living in it). Even considering the harsh weather this seems to be no accounting for taste! However it does make for a most remarkable scene to watch them wheeling over the tractors whilst the spreaders are at work. These dark nights we watch a lot of television. We have recently been joined in this past time by Jake the dog. He sits on his own special seat waiting for a glimpse of any quadruped especially if they appear dog like. They are then greeted with much excitement and barking which generally disturbs the whole programme, much to the ladies delight. Unfortunately a recent episode of Africa showed a primate baring a very large set of teeth. At this poor Jake fled to the kitchen and wasn't seen until the end of the programme.

A view from Lanky Hill

As it is still only the middle of January I thought I would belatedly wish you all a happy New Year. Unfortunately 2012 with one or two national exceptions was a pretty dismal year. In the calendar year up here at Lanky Hill 42 inches of rain fell on us. This is in comparison to 22 inches of rain in 2011. At least the effects of the drought are now well passed us. Whilst looking forward to better weather this year the sudden cold snap that has descended upon us is a bit of a setback. We are currently experiencing extremely low night time temperatures of -12-14C.

Gayton Evergreens
We start this New Year 2013 hoping that all our members are fit and well and in good spirits. November 21st 2012 now seems such a long time ago. However it was the day that started the Evergreens Christmas activities, with our Christmas lunch. This year the caterer was Mr Paul Witt who provided us with an excellent meal and beautifully decorated tables in the Gayton Jubilee Hall, it was enjoyed by over fifty members. After lunch entertainment was by the singing duo 'Chantel' who had everyone clapping and tapping their feet to the music of the 50s & 60s. The afternoon was brought to a close by the drawing of the raffle. December 19th, the Evergreens Carol service was enjoyed despite the Rev'd Ian Whittle being unable to get to us due to his car misbehaving. Lord and Lady Romney were both able to attend and Florence Newton played the organ. Readings were given and Carols were sung with gusto after which Sherry and Mince Pies were enjoyed by us all. Once again a lovely raffle was drawn before we all wished one another a 'Merry Christmas', and we were reminded that the next meeting would be next year, and here we are. January 16th 2013, Oh dear sooooo cold and to cap it all no heating in the Hall! Never mind not to be thwarted, the members who had braved the outside weather conditions were determined to enjoy the afternoon. With warming smiles and friendly chatter, five games of Bingo were played for prizes of groceries

before a very welcome cup of tea and biscuits. The usual raffle was then drawn to bring the afternoon to a close. Next meeting February 20th: The newly retired head gardener from Oxborough Hall will be giving a talk on his experience working there. Kath Roberts

The Church as a Family

G'family' well families includeNEWS AYTON THORPE everybody

Messy Church began a New Year in January. At our session on Thursday 24th we thought about Jesus growing up as a boy and learned what he got up to when he was just 12 years old! Our session this month will be held in the Jubilee Hall on Thursday 28th February arrival from 3.30pm when we will be thinking about Lent and the run up to Easter. Never been to Messy Church? If you have never been to Messy Church a warm welcome and lots of fun await you but remember - you do need to bring a child with you!!!! Looking ahead to Easter Easter falls early this year so do look out in next months magazine for details of our family activities and services during the Easter weekend.

We often talk about the church being a

from the very young to the 'well matured' and all in-between!

We now have regular services at Gayton church held in a more relaxed 'modern' style to suite all ages and those not used to coming to church. More of you are beginning to discover the joy of belonging.

Family services in church!

Family services coming up will be: Sunday 3rd February Sunday 17th February Sunday 3rd March 10.30am at St Nicholas Church, Gayton.

Gayton WI Meetings December 2012 & January 2013

Our December meeting was one of fun, food and laughter. Members were treated to a very entertaining and hilarious evening courtesy of The Strolling Players, a group of seven very talented artists who performed a selection of informal musical items. This was followed by a delicious Christmas buffet, provided by all members, and our Secret Santa gifts. We then all joined in with singing Christmas Carols, followed by a raffle Our January meeting was a relatively informal affair which enabled members to catch up after the Christmas break. We organised our own entertainment which gave us a chance to have another look at the extensive diaries and photos of past WI events. Members are always surprised to see themselves in some of the archived photos, which also give a lovely insight into how our WI has progressed over the years. We also had a quiz which was enjoyed by all. Our members are of varying ages, and our programme offers a variety of entertainment to suit all age groups. In February will have an Indian Cookery demonstration by Saira Karim. We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall and offer a warm welcome to all new members. So .. if you are just wondering do please come along and see what we have to offer. Kay Shambrook

Norfolk RCC, AF Affinity and InTouch Systems have come together to provide communities in Norfolk with fast, reliable broadband connections. In our first survey customers rated ThinkingWISP's services as 100%, very good or excellent overall and 100%, very good or excellent for support services. All respondents also said they would recommend the service to a friend. We are able to offer speeds from 3 to 10mb/s. Oh Dear, Gaytons Sewerage Problems! A concerned villager would like to share his thought on the problems Gayton has had nearly all winter this year and in previous years. We are experiencing the usual backing up of our foul water drain that puts certain facilities in our house out of use for periods of up to 10 days. When I ring Anglian Water (AW) I am informed that no one else from Gayton has contacted them about a problem (despite many inspection chambers on customer's properties being almost full to overflowing) which all too often turns out to be down to the fact that the Winch Road pumping station has packed up. One might well ask the question that if unmanned pumping stations send a radio signal to a monitoring console then why hasn't AW responded to a fault without waiting for someone to rebel at the inconvenience. During the latest episode that we are still experiencing, an AW employee informed me over the telephone that many customers are afraid that if they complain about a failure then they will receive a bill for the call out but that this is certainly not so.

Would you like therefore to take advantage of the research that has been done and follow these simple guidelines? In the event of an interruption to the sewage disposal service and the obvious inconvenience that this entails, Anglian Water customers are urged to ring the telephone number: 08457 145145. No charge will be made by Anglian Water for investigating a problem that may well be more speedily corrected. Name and contact details can be supplied upon application.

GAYTON THORPE NEWS

Mud
Mud everywhere, a lot in the car and a fair amount on the Beagle' belly! However, hopefully we can get it sorted. I have had a meeting in the village with the Highways engineer. He has looked at the problems and has agreed to schedule in work in the village. They will: Dig out the drains by the patch. Dig out the Grips (Grups), Clear out the culvert under the road, Repair the potholes, Deliver some planings to fill in the holes in the lane around the green. Obviously at the moment they are very busy and with the snow cannot do much. I will keep in touch with Highways and try and get a schedule for the works to be completed. Grit Thanks to the Drews for gritting the corner I am sure everyone feels a bit safer when hitting the brakes. Nigel's persistence has also got the grit bin filled up again. The next parish meeting is on Monday 11 February at 7.30 pm. If anyone has any concerns that they wish me to raise please contact me or attend the meeting as everyone is invited and there is a ten minute open forum to allow people to raise matters of concern to them. Don't let criminals leave you cold

Norfolk Constabulary is offering advice and crime prevention visits to help you keep your heating oil safe this autumn and winter. General tips include: Check oil levels frequently so you are aware if anyone has tampered with your supply. Fit a good quality locking device to all fuel tanks: a high quality closed shackle padlock will make access using bolt croppers very difficult. Consider perimeter security for the whole tank, such as a metal cage or fencing. Even a prickly hedge may help deter thieves. Remember, however, that the oil tanker driver needs access. Control switches should be located in a secure building and turned off when the tank is not in use. Oil tanks should ideally be situated within sight of nearby occupied buildings. Norfolk PACT (Partners Against Crime Taskforce) can supply, fit and set up an oil tank alarm. This usually costs 146.36 including VAT. Contact PACT on 01953 424727 or email norfolkpact@norfolk.pnn.police.uk . Norfolk PACT is a not for profit business. If you have particular concerns or want further advice on keeping your oil tank secure, contact your local Crime Prevention Officer on 101 or email

Overview from West Norfolk Policing Commander

It's been a busy time for officers in West Norfolk. As well as attending incidents on the road, we continue to target those criminals who have a real impact at this time of year particularly those that steal heating oil. It's awful to have your heating fail at any time but in weather like this it's particularly difficult. We still have extra patrols in affected areas and can provide specific crime prevention advice to keep your tank safe. This goes for businesses and organisations as well as domestic properties. Just call your local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 for details. Back to the snow, and it's disappointing that we are still seeing people not taking sensible precautions

precautions when on the roads. In winter weather, driving conditions can deteriorate fast, making driving hazardous. As a result, we've been advising motorists to: Make sure all your car lights are working and you have no failed bulbs. Ensure that dirt, salt and snow are cleared away from light fixtures. Always ensure all windows are fully cleared of snow, frost and condensation before setting off on a journey - it is illegal to drive with obscured vision. Also clear snow from the top of the car as this can fall down and obscure your windscreen while you are driving. Keep windscreen washer fluid topped up as windscreens quickly become dirty from traffic spray and salt from the roads. Continued on page 39

Incinerator Update www.farmerscampaign.org

Occasionally letters in the papers reveal how a few believe the modern myth that no pollution escapes 'modern' Incinerator filters. If there was no pollution you can be sure companies would not waste money building 85m tall stacks to get rid of 'fresh air'. Intensive preparation work is going on for the Public Inquiry, KLWIN and Cory Wheelabrator have been requesting information from each other and meeting to identify any areas of common ground between us. There are many procedures and strict deadlines to be met before the Inquiry opens on 26th Feb. Some information has been exchanged and some not. KLWIN provided Cory Wheelabrator with a report from independent consultancy Eunomia. Cory Wheelabrator provided maps showing whereabouts they think their greatest concentrations of Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and other pollution would hit the ground. Where the pollution lands and in what concentration is important to the Inquiry. At the time of writing this update Cory Wheelabrator is still not prepared to release details of its filter specification; arguing that they have not chosen their supplier. This is important and concerning because legislation requires them to use 'Best Available Technique' (BAT) filters, unfortunately 'BAT' includes both effective and ineffective filters. Some fail to trap between 70-95% of the most harmful particles. Back in September at a trade exhibition Dr Fleck, a senior official connected with the Willows Incinerator, stated the filter specification had been decided and details would be provided. However, since then Cory Wheelabrator has been unwilling to provide the specification and

continue to say ..this specific request for information is not considered relevant.. Why they will still not provide this information is not known. It is essential people from across West Norfolk come to the Inquiry, listen to all the evidence and understand the basis for the inspector's final recommendation. It is free to attend. The sound quality should be much improved from Pre-Inquiry Lynn Sport event. The first day of the inquiry will be at King's Lynn Corn Exchange starting 10am on 26th February 2013. Following days will be at the Professional Development Centre, Kilham Way, next to the fire station. KLWIN's fundraising events include Bollywood style Curry Night 9th Feb at 7pm, for tickets call 01553 840640. The next KLWIN Coffee morning, plus Crafts is on 23 February 9am to 12 noon at Fairgreen Farms, Hill Rd, Middletion, PE32 1RN Mike Knights, Vice Chairman KLWIN Continued from page 37 Make sure you have sufficient fuel for your journey. Keep the fuel tank topped up. Give yourself extra time for your journey and drive at a constant speed. Accept your journey will take longer and don't take risks. Take a mobile telephone with you and make sure it is fully charged. Carry a mobile charger in the car. You can find traffic updates on our twitter feeds @kingslynnpolice or @norfolkpolice and listen to your local radio station for the most up-to-date information about public services. Most importantly, keep safe and keep warm. Supt Dave Marshall
