Incorporating the Branches

Nvel avanado
It's never a fun thing to have to tell someone that his or her future with a company is uncertain, nor is it ever fun to receive such news. Unfortunately these situations are a reality, particularly with the way the global economy is going these days. In this lesson you'll learn how to express what will be happening in the future...or not happening.

Metas:
At the end of this lesson you'll be able to:

Use vocabulary to talk about events taking place in the future Understand the use of the future continuous Understand different expressions with put

DILOGO
Jessica: Michael, this is the second quarter in a row that sales have been down.

Michael: Well, yes, we've had some trouble meeting our sales targets, but I can assure you this is only a one-time thing...well, a two-time thing.

Jessica: Right. That being said, I'll be meeting with corporate at the end of the week to find out what's going to happen.

Michael: What do you mean, "happen"?

Jessica: To put it to you simply, corporate doesn't feel that they can justify keeping a Westfield and a Cranford branch. They're considering incorporating the two.

Michael: Well, then, who stays and who goes?

Jessica: That's what we'll be deciding this week.

TRADUO

Esto cogitando incorporar as duas.

Michael: Bom, ento, quem fica e quem vai embora?

Jessica: isso que ns estaremos decidindo esta semana.

GRAMTICA
FUTURE Dialog: "That being said, I'll be meeting with corporate at the end of the week..." CONTINUOUS

We use the future continuous to talk about a pre-arranged action or event that will be in progress at a particular moment in the future. We can also use it to talk about something we predict will be in progress at a certain time in the future.

When do you think we'll be leaving for the show? I won't be joining you for dinner this evening; I have some important business to attend to. Will you be coming to the corporate picnic this weekend? I'm not positive, but I think Janet will be singing at open mic night tonight.

LABORATRIO
EXPRESSIONS Dialog: "To put it to you simply..." WITH "PUT"

"Put" can be used in many useful expressions. "To put something together" can mean to assemble or produce something, often in a hurried manner. "To put someone up" means to accommodate someone temporarily. But "to put someone up to something" means to encourage someone to do something that is usually wrong or unwise. And if you "put up with someone or something" you are able to tolerate or endure that person or thing.

1) TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER

Listen, we've only got a couple of hours to put something together to show the client. He put the whole thing together by himself without reading the instruction manual.

2) TO PUT SOMEONE UP

My cousin asked if we could put him up for a few weeks while he looked for an apartment. The committee put the athletes up in a very comfortable hotel.

3) TO PUT SOMEONE UP TO SOMETHING

Did your little "friend" put you up to that? You're lucky you didn't get arrested! I don't want to put you up to anything that might get you in trouble. I'm just asking you to think about my offer.

4) TO PUT UP WITH SOMEONE OR SOMETHING

I will not put up with you seeing that boy! He's not right for you. I don't think I can put up with that noise anymore. I have to fix the leaky faucet!
