MEHRAN UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY, JAMSHORO. FIRST TERM SECOND YEAR (3RD TERM) B.E.(MINING) & B.E.(INDUSTRIAL ENGG: & MANAG.) REGULAR EXAMINATION 2008 OF 07-BATCH. STRENGTH OF MATERIALS Date: 13-05-2008 Time Allowed: 03 Hours. Max:Marks-80. NOTE: ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. ALL QUESTIONS CARRY EQUAL MARKS. ASSUME YOUR OWN DATA WHERE NECESSARY. Q.No. 01 (a) (b) Define stress and strain. Explain Hook's law and derive a relation for the stresses in a bar of uniformly tapering section. A copper rod, circular in a cross-section, uniformly tapers from 85mm to 40mm in a length of 1.5m. Find the elongation of the rod, when it is subjected to a tensile load of 65 KN. Take E=100KN/mm2.

02

Define Thermal Stresses and thermal stains. A brass bar having cross sectional area of 10 cm 2 is subjected to an axial force as shown in figure. Let E = 8 * 105 kg/cm2. Find the total elongation of the bar. A B C 5000 kg 8000 kg 1000 kg 2000 kg 60 cm 100 cm 220 cm

03

(a) Define Poisons ratio. Differentiate between the bulk modulus and the shear modulus. Derive a relation for the volumetric strain of a rectangular body subjected to an axial force. (b) Determine the changes in the length, breadth, and thickness of a steel bar 4 m long, 30 mm wide and 20 mm thick, when subjected to an axial pull of 120 KN in the direction of length. E = 200 GPa and Poisons ratio = 0.3

04

(a) Drive an expression for the determination of normal stress and shear stress on an oblique section of a rectangular body, when it is subjected to direct stresses in two mutually perpendicular directions. (b) A load of 10 KN falls freely through a height of 12.5mm to a collar attached to the end of vertical rod 50 mm diameter and 3 m long, the upper end being fixed to the ceiling. What is the maximum stress induced in the bar?

(a) (b)

Define Moment of Inertia and section modulus. Explain transfer formula of moment of inertia and derive an equation for moment of inertia of a rectangular section about its base. Find the moment of inertia of a T-section with flange 35cmx3cm and web 20cmx3cm about an axis passing through the c.g. and the base. Cont'd on P/-2..

(-2-) 06 Prove the relations f/y = M/I = E/R A rectangular beam 200 mm deep is simply supported over a beam of span 2m. Find the uniformly distributed load, the beam can carry if the bending stress is not to exceed 30 N/mm2. Take moment of inertia for the beam as 8 * 10 6 mm4. (a) (b) Define shear force and bending moment with sign conventions and derive a relation between S.F and B.M at a section. A simply supported beam 10 m long is subjected to a UDL of 10 kN/m over the entire span and point loads of 25KN and 35KN at distances of 3m and 7m from the left end. Determine the values of maximum shear force and bending moment and also draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the same. Write short notes on any three of the following. a) Assumptions in Theory of Simple Bending. b) Principle of superposition. c) Types of Beams, Loads and supports d) Elongation in uniformly tapering circular section
