Support of AVEVA Plant Design products on Windows variants Background

PDMS and other Plant Design products have been supported on Windows XP for many years; it has been almost universally used for PDMS 11.6 and PDMS 12.0 to date. A few customers have been using Windows 2000 until recently but are upgrading after Microsoft withdrew support in July 2010. Windows Vista was released in 2007 but was not well accepted by the business community. AVEVA did not announce support on Vista but did make some changes to PDMS 12.0.SP4 and FlexMan 4 to allow initial testing to take place. Windows 7 was introduced in late 2009 and was generally very well received; it is clear that quite a few customers expect to introduce it during 2011. AVEVA had planned to support PDMS on Windows 7 starting with PDMS 12.1, but this was brought forward to PDMS 12.0.SP6. Support on Windows 2000, which is no longer supported by Microsoft, was discontinued as a result of the changes required for Windows 7. Microsoft also withdrew support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 on 13-Jul-2010. AVEVA therefore recommends users to upgrade to Service Pack 3 and plans to withdraw support on SP2 at PDMS 12.1.

64-bit PC hardware
Most modern PC hardware is 64-bit, which allows (but does not enforce) the use of a 64-bit variant of Windows. 64-bit computer hardware generally has integer and addressing registers that are 64 bits wide, allowing direct support for 64-bit data types and addresses. It was introduced to the workstation market in the early 1990s and to the mainstream PC arena around 10 years later.

Windows variants (32- and 64-bit)

By allowing a program to address more memory, programs can exceed the usual 3GB limit and manipulate much larger data sets. 64-bit versions of Windows can run suitably compliant 32-bit programs using an emulator technique sometimes referred to as Windows-on-Windows (WoW64) but 64-bit versions of programs cannot run on 32-bit versions of Windows. AVEVA has always recommended the Professional edition of Windows XP. This was introduced as a 32-bit product at the end of 2001 and a 64-bit variant (Windows XP Professional x64 Edition) followed much later in 2005. AVEVA has never supported products on the 64-bit version, though limited testing has been performed with some products, including PDMS. Both 32-bit and 64-bit variants of Windows Vista were available from its launch in 2007. AVEVA has not announced support on Vista though it has committed to support some products for a few customers by special agreement. Only limited testing is performed on Vista 32-bit and none on Vista 64-bit. Both 32-bit and 64-bit variants of Windows 7 were available from its launch and the 64-bit variant is becoming common; the latest version of Windows Server 2008 is 64-bit only. AVEVA supports the current release of most Plant products on both see over but does NOT yet support the Marine products, either 12.0.SP6 or older products, on either. So far, only Review 12.1 is available as a 64-bit product to take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture; the other products run under WoW64. There are no immediate plans for a 64-bit variant of PDMS. Further reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit

Double Precision (64-bit floating point numbers)

PDMS has long used double precision for some calculations. PDMS 12.0 extended this use to almost all calculations and to the database storage. This is independent of 64-bit hardware or operating system. The effect is that accuracy and range are both increased for real numbers such as positions in PDMS. Coordinates should now be accurate up to the limit of the spatial map (100 km) but please note that there is currently a limit of 21 km for Isodraft, which will be relaxed at version 12.1.

Server operating systems: most products do not usually run on the server but use it for file storage. Where indicated , product has been tested on the server, at least in batch operation. The 32-bit program is supported on the 64-bit version of Windows (WOW64). Final Designer is not supported on Windows 7. These interfaces will be updated for Windows 7 (and FlexMan 5) from their next release in mid-2011. A beta test version of ImPLANT-I 2.2 and ImPLANT-STL 1.4 may be available. P&ID: Windows 7 support for AutoCAD 2010 only; support with AutoCAD 64-bit target mid-2011. License files generated from June 2010 onwards are compatible with Flexman 5, as well as 4 & 3. Diagrams, Schematic Model Manager, Schematic 3D Integrator, Multi-Discipline Supports, Area Based ADP, Nuclear Applications, Cable Design, Laser Model Interface, Mechanical Equipment Interface, ExPLANT-A 1.1, ExPLANT-I 1.4, Pipe Stress Interface, Query VPRM & VPE Workbench are more complex: for details refer to the Compatibility Matrix. In both cases, the use of Windows 7 clients is supported for the forms applications, along with Windows Server 2008 R2 for the database server from early 2011 and for the application server and VPE desktop applications from mid-2011. Support for Internet Explorer 9 will depend on Oracle.

Please note that the Marine portfolio is NOT supported on Windows 7 at version 12.0.SP6 but this is planned for version 12.1 (Mid-2011)
