Description: This course covers all the sub-systems of modern electric drives including various types of electric machines, power electronic converters, controllers and mechanical systems. Electric drives have numerous applications, including hybrid and all-electric cars, industry automation and robotics, energy conservation through adjustable speed drives and wind energy interface. This course explains the basic principles of various types of electric machines, ranging from dc to permanent magnet ac, in a unified and intuitive manner. The operation of ac machines is explained on a physical basis using space vector theory. Pre-requisite: EEE360 or instructor consent. Pre-requisite topics are introductory physics, dc and ac circuit analysis, three phase circuits, phasors and Bode plots, and familiarity with any one of PSpice, Simulink, PLECS or similar simulation tools. Textbook: Electric Machines and Drives: A First Course by Ned Mohan, ISBN 978-1-11807481-7, January 2012, Wiley. Major topics: Introduction to electric drives, mechanical system requirements (3) Power electronic converters (2) Review of magnetic circuits and transformers (2) Principles of electro-mechanical energy conversion (2) DC motors and drives structure, principles, models, applications (3) Controller design for dc motor drives (2) Introduction to ac machines and space vector theory (2) Permanent magnet ac drives and applications, and synchronous generators (3) Induction motors: Sinusoidal steady state operation (2) Speed control and applications (2) DFIGs and wind energy interface (2) Motor drives in electric vehicles (1) Stepper motors and switched-reluctance drives (1) Homework: Eight (8) detailed homeworks will be assigned. The problems, and later, the solutions will be posted on the class webpage. Many of the homework assignments will involve simulation exercises.
