INTRODUCTION
Tourism is a large and fast growing industry. In 1995 it yielded 8% of the total value of world trade (WTO, 1997). About 450 million arrivals were counted then (German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (GFANC), 1997). Annual growth rate estimates of tourism are 5.5% (GFANC, 1997) to 7.2% (Ceballos-Lascurin, 1996).Due to its economic importance, a lot of time has been dedicated and is still being dedicated to research on the phenomena underlying and caused by tourism. Because of the nature of tourism, many scientific disciplines are involved in these research activities.

Defining tourism
The World Tourism Organization (WTO) states that tourism is the activity of people who travel to places outside their customary surroundings and stay there for leisure, business or other purposes for no longer than one year without interruption. Tourism is the temporary movement of people to destinations outside their normal places of work and residence, the activities undertaken during their stay in those destinations, and the facilities created to cater to their needs.
