Kindergarten Handbook 2013

Welcome to Kindergarten

We hope that you and your child will have a happy year with us at Oak Street Kindergarten. Some children feel unsure when they start kindergarten and they may need a parent or something familiar to stay with them for a few days. Kindergarten can be a big step for some children and it may take a little time until they are comfortable with this new place and get to know their teachers. Please feel at ease at any time to discuss any concern you may have about your child and their development. Our wish is always to be a friend and helper to the parents as well as the children we have in our care.

Staff Preparation Time You will notice from the previous timetable that during the week there are times when children are not in attendance at the Centre. Time, before and after Kindergarten sessions are set aside for Staff to prepare programs and experiences for the children and also to attend meetings. These times also offer an opportunity for you to make an appointment to come and speak to a Teacher or perhaps to organise a home visit. Due to the tight scheduling of sessions and cleaning and preparation which needs to be done between groups, the staff have little time left for their lunch. We would appreciate parents waiting until the commencement time of sessions before entering the building and picking the children up promptly at the end of sessions.

Eligibility for Enrolling in Kindergarten Programs Four Year Old Kindergarten (Pre-School) Children must be four by April 30th in their Kindergarten year to be eligible for Government funding. Children are funded for one year of Kindergarten only. In exceptional circumstances if the childs level of development is delayed in at least two areas, the child may be granted another year. Three Year Old Kindergarten (Pre-Kindergarten) Children must turn three prior to attending. This year before Kindergarten is seen as an exploratory year. Children are encouraged to explore the new environment away from a Parent. Enrolment in the Pre-Kindergarten group does not guarantee your child a position at Oak Street Kindergarten the following year.

Enrolment Procedures All Kindergarten enrolments are processed by a Central Enrolment System through Baw Baw Shire Council. Information on how to enrol in kindergarten is available through the shire
www.bawbawshire.vic.gov.au/Services/Children_Families/Kindergartens

The Kindergarten has an enrolment policy if Parents would like more detailed information. The policy folder is located in the front foyer at Kindergarten. Allocation to Groups Once your child has been allocated a place at Oak Street Kindergarten, you will be contacted and asked to put in your preference for group sessions. Whilst we endeavour to always provide your first preference, this is not always possible. If you have concerns regarding group allocation, please contact Julie Beatty at YMCA Cluster Management.

10

Fees Kindergartens are not subsidised in full by the Government. They are not Council funded and unfortunately they are not free. Kindergartens are independently run, non-profit organisations and a fee for accessing this service is therefore necessary. Fees charged are equal with the service provided, and are set by the Centre with the aim of keeping them as affordable as possible. There is a subsidy available to Health Care/Pension Card holders for Pre-School Kindergarten only, and term fees will be reduced accordingly for holders of these cards. Should your financial circumstances change during the year and you find you cannot meet your commitment, please contact Julie Beatty at the YMCA to make suitable arrangements. Any communication regarding fees will remain confidential. Each family is asked to sign a fee payment agreement form, and to select their method of payment, which is either by cheque, money order or direct debit. The Teachers and Assistants are employees of the Kindergartens and are not responsible for fees.

FEES for 2013 Red, Green and Blue Groups $954 per year $318 per term (Terms 1, 2 & 3) $106 per month (By DD Mar-Nov) Yellow Group $900 per year $300 per term (Terms 1, 2 & 3) $100 per month (By DD Mar Nov) 11

Health Care Card Holders Yellow group is our Pre-Kindergarten program and is not subsidised; therefore there is no discount at all for Health Care Card holders. Children known to Child Protection or children who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander are eligible to receive benefits in the Pre-Kindergarten group. Please feel free to speak to your childs Teacher about this. Parents will be asked to enter into an agreement with the YKCM for the payment of their fees. Parents need to inform the YKCM should their circumstances, contact details or bank information change. Settling into Kindergarten For the first weeks of kindergarten sessions will be shortened and the children will be divided into two small groups. You will be given a timetable to follow. This is done to help your child: Get to know the teacher and assistant. Settle into the kindergarten routine. Gradually get used to being away from you for a long period of time. To help the teacher and assistant develop a good relationship with each child.

Kindergarten is a great place to be, but the first few days and weeks can also be an overwhelming experience, as your child is confronted with a large group of children and unfamiliar adults. Settling into Kinder is another routine for children to become familiar with. As upsetting as it may feel at the start of the day, children are supported to understand that when a Parent leaves it also means they come back at home time! 12

Please feel free to stay with your child if it seems appropriate. When you do leave, always say goodbye, tell your child when you will be back and leave promptly. Drawn out goodbyes can be distressing for the child and the Parent! If you leave without saying goodbye, it will be even harder for your child to feel safe and secure without you at Kindergarten. Staff will always contact you if your child is unduly distressed, but please rest assured most children do settle quickly.

Arrival and Departure Each time you bring your child to kindergarten please come inside as the teacher likes to greet both you and your child. Parents or carers are required to fill in the attendance book, giving time of arrival, your signature and who will collect the child at the end of the session. Before a child can be collected, the authorised person must fill in the attendance book giving collection time and signature. When you collect your child the teacher will want to say goodbye to you both. This gives the teacher the opportunity to tell you about your childs time at kindergarten and it also means that you can ask her questions. If you cannot bring or collect your child yourself, tell the teacher the name of the person who will be doing this for you. Please phone staff if there has been a change in the usual collection routine. If a child is not collected, the staff will follow the policy for the late collection of children.

13

Late Collection of Children 1. 10 minutes after the completion of a session, if the designated person has NOT collected the child, the parent will be telephoned.

2. If there is no response from the parent, the 3 emergency numbers will be contacted as well as retrying to contact the parent.

3. If, after one hour, the parent/carer has not contacted the Kinder and the Kinder cannot get in contact with any of the contact numbers, the Police will be notified.

Staff Illness It is occasionally necessary for Kindergarten sessions to be cancelled due to Staff illness when there is no qualified relief Staff available. This is always a last resort and Parents are notified as early as possible if this is to happen.

14

Our Kindergarten Program We welcome your child to our kindergarten and hope his/her stay is a particularly happy one. Our Kindergarten offers your child: Companionship: with other children the same age. They learn to play together, share, co-operate and make friends. from home to a wider experience at Kindergarten. Here they learn to trust in another adult who shows love, care, understanding and guidance before beginning a more formal education at primary school. through the play equipment that is provided to exercise their growing minds and bodies, developing these to their fullest potential. in expressing their feelings and learning to fit in with other children and adults. in their own abilities. about the world in which they live.

Equity at Kindergarten Pre-school years are critical in the formation of attitudes and behaviours. We believe that both boys and girls have an equal capacity for learning and offer a gender inclusive program. It is important that they value themselves as individuals and explore a variety of roles. At our centre, materials and equipment, space and teacher time are available for boys and girls without discrimination.

The Kindergarten service is open to all eligible children. We do not discriminate on race, gender, disability, religious or ethnic background in gaining access to the preschool program.

Please note that during the course of the program mention of other people and their cultural and spiritual beliefs may be made, always in a very positive manner. Awareness and tolerance of others and appreciation of each individual is encouraged. Christmas is celebrated at kinder with the Christmas story and familiar carols.

16

Our Kindergarten Philosophy Educational program and practice / Physical environment We believe that play skills become life skills. We offer a child oriented, play based Centre, in which children are stimulated to grow in all areas of development through self motivated exploration. An element of risk taking, exploration of natural materials and the emphasis on the process, rather than the product, are important elements of this Centres philosophy. Your child is seen as a unique individual and we offer experiences and challenges to nurture skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Our program is inclusive and we support the needs of all children. We encourage children to be enthusiastic learners and provide a warm, stimulating environment in which to grow and develop. We value and respect our staff, their knowledge and commitment. We recognise and fully support their continued professional learning as an essential element in the delivery of a quality kindergarten program. Childrens health and safety / Relationships with children The health and total well being of each child is important to us, therefore situations are cultivated to develop self worth, self esteem, self confidence, as well as encouraging them to care for their bodies in a healthy, safe manner. Childrens behaviour is guided in a positive and consistent approach from all members of staff. Collaborative partnerships with families and communities We encourage parents to take an active role in their childs kindergarten years. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your childs progress and development and we value parent participation in our programs. We respect the diverse cultures of children and families and acknowledge and value the indigenous heritage of our community. We explore opportunities in the local community to expand childrens learning and experiences. 17

Notices All Kindergarten groups have a file folder where you will find kinder letters, Book Club, YKCM notes, newsletters etc Parents please remember to collect any correspondence from your childs folder every session. The Group file folder is next to the sign in book. Files are listed alphabetically by your childs FIRST NAME. If you prefer your correspondence to be emailed, the address is oak.st.kin@Kindergarten.vic.gov.au

Photographs/Videos and Social Media Please respect the rights of other children and families by checking with the Teacher in charge before taking any photographs or videos of other children at Kindergarten. Some Parents have requested that their child not be photographed. Families have a right to their personal privacy so we ask Parents to be mindful of maintaining confidentiality when dealing with social media. It is not appropriate for Parents to place photos or comments that include children other than their own onto any social media website.

18

Clothing At Kindergarten your children are involved in a variety of creative play that can sometimes involve messy experiences! We do our best to keep their clothes as clean as possible by using smocks but accidents can happen. Please dress them in clothes that are Not their best, most beautiful outfit that cant get dirty Comfortable and safe (e.g. a warm coat and gumboots in Winter) Can be easily washed. Easily managed independently by children, especially when going to the toilet Children need appropriate footwear at Kinder. Do not send your child in thongs as they are NOT safe footwear during a busy kinder day. As we are a Sunsmart Centre, all children, staff and parent helpers are required to wear wide brimmed hats when outdoors from the beginning of September until the end of April. Please put a spare set of clothes in your childs bag each day water play, muddy sandpit play or bathroom accidents sometimes happen! It is important to name ALL clothing Kinder clothes look similar and can get mixed up at times!

Parents Library There is a library with books and videos for parents to borrow. The Parent Library contains interesting and easily read books and videos covering many topics including-parenting, childrens problems, activities to do at home, preparation for school, etc. Feel free to borrow at anytime by writing your name and details of the item borrowed in the book provided.

19

Birthdays We share this special day with your child by singing Happy Birthday, and giving them a birthday certificate. Due to many children suffering from allergies, we do not allow cakes or party food (other than fruit) to enter our Kindergarten. If you are having a birthday party at home and plan to invite some of your childs friends at Kinder, please be discrete when handing out invitations as those children not invited may get upset. Placing invitations into the file box next to the sign in book would be ideal !

Healthy Eating Snacks/Lunch At our Kindergarten, we model and encourage children and families to make healthy nutritional choices as part of our Healthy Eating policy. Children participate in progressive snack during morning and/or afternoon time and we feel this: Allows children to regulate their own bodily needs Recognises the fluctuation of individual energy levels Creates a relaxed and social environment Improves time management Encourages childrens responsibility. Each session, all children will bring their own snacks (Pre-Kinder and Pre-School groups) and their own lunch (Pre-School only), which will not be shared with others. We ask that each child bring a piece of fruit which they can manage independently (e.g. an orange cut and in cling wrap). Kinder has an apple curler which is a fun way for children to be encouraged to eat more fruit! Please include a sandwich, roll, wrap or such suitable foods for lunch. Water is available at all times to the children, and we hope to encourage independence with the children by pouring their own water, and organizing their own snacks. Children can bring their own bottle of water (please avoid cordial or juice.) 20

We are participating in the Kids Go for your life program, which actively encourages families to provide nutritious food for their children, both at home and at Kindergarten. For some healthy lunch ideas please go to www.goforyourlife.vic.gov.au/kids We ask Parents to NOT SEND chips, lollies, cakes, chocolate covered muesli bars, chocolate custards, sweet biscuits and other sometimes food items. Such sugary treats and high in salt foods are not only expensive, but they provide minimal food value for growing bodies and children will find it hard to sustain an active day of Kinder without healthier food options. Important Information regarding Snack/Lunch Foods and Children with Life Threatening Allergies At Oak Street Kindergarten we sometimes have children with LIFE THREATENING allergies to certain foods and products. This simply means, if they ingest, or possibly come into contact with foods that cause them to have an allergic reaction, their airways will swell to the extent that they can no longer breathe, which can cause DEATH. We ask Parents to NOT SEND nuts, nutella or nut products. Please put yourself in the position of the Parents with children who are affected and consider this when choosing snack and lunch foods for Kinder. Staff will inform you if there are children with allergies or as risk of anaphylaxis to certain foods in your group. Our Healthy Eating policy and Anaphylaxis policy not only promote healthy eating practices but also aims to minimize the incidence of allergic reactions and help reassure the families of those affected by life threatening allergies. Inappropriate food will be sent home.

21

Books for Sale One of our fundamental objectives is to encourage literacy and a love of books. We offer good quality childrens books for sale each month through Book Club and the Kindergarten receives free books as our reward. If you would like to purchase any, please place the correct money in an envelope with your name and the name of the book. Money must be paid to Kinder before the due date.

Policies/Quality Improvement Plan In accordance with DEECD Regulations, a copy of all Kindergarten policies and our Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) are available to Parents. The policy folder is located in the front foyer. Please take the time to read these documents.

22

Parent Helpers We value the support of Parents who volunteer their time and efforts for the benefit of the children and our Kindergarten. Over the coming year all Parents/Families will be asked to participate in jobs such as; washing laundry (smocks, tea towels, dress ups etc), Parent helper during sessions or on excursions, working bees or participating on Parent Committees. Some of the ways in which help may be given include Preparing snack time for the childrens morning and afternoon snacks at kindergarten. Supervising snack time. Washing smocks and hand towels. Sometimes the teachers need help from the parents if they want to take the children outside the kindergarten, e.g., to the police station, fire station, post office etc. There are often jobs like sewing, mending broken equipment and the teachers will be pleased to know of anyone who can assist. Some parents like to come and read or tell stories to the children, to do the garden or to cook with them.

Kindergarten offers parents the opportunity to: Meet others and make friends Work together at the centre Watch their children learn through play Learn more about the way children grow and develop Discuss common problems

23

We appreciate a general helper each session and why not come and enjoy spending some quality playing time with your child and their friends! The role of the parent helper may include: Talk with children about what they are doing (promotes language development)

Write childrens names on their artwork in the top left hand corner (some children will be able to write their own names).Use red texta for Red Group, blue for Blue Group, etc. Hang up paintings to dry. Assist children at activity tables e.g. with jigsaws, keeping in mind not to do it for them. Read stories to children. Assist in outside supervision. Assist in putting away outside equipment for afternoon groups. Clean brushes in cold water using left sink Wipe the top of glue pots and paint pots with yellow sponges and cold water Empty the various bins in the appropriate outside bins (e.g. compost, green wheelie bins) Take down dry paintings and file them into treasure boxes. (Texta colour for names usually indicates whether painting was done by a child in blue, red or yellow group). Help children put their notices and artwork into their bags if their treasure box file looks like it hasnt been emptied for a while.

Spending time with your child. We understand some families may find it more difficult to commit to helping on the roster during a session but value the other ways they can support our Kinder by doing extra turns on the laundry roster, participating in fundraisers or simply stopping by on a weekend to do a little gardening ! 24

Committees Parent Committee The Parent Committees role is to coordinate fundraising, source and apply for relevant Grants to support improvements to the Kindergarten, arrange minor maintenance requirements and generally work together to ensure the Kindergarten looks great and is welcoming to all. They are also required to liaise with the Staff and the YMCA in making decisions about how money raised will be spent. The Parent Committee often looks to delegate tasks to members of the Parent body so please consider providing your support when approached. We value our Parents/Guardians as a valuable resource. Any special talents or interests are welcomed in our program. A new Committee is elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM). You, as a Parent, are encouraged to join. Please consider being involved. Normal meetings are held at Kindergarten once per month. The Committee is comprised of four office bearers: President Vice President Secretary

Treasurer

as well as a maximum of 6 General Committee members. Any Parent is welcome to attend monthly meetings, but only elected Committee members are able to vote. Please take the time to consider being a part of the Committee whether you feel you can commit to a small or larger role ! All committee positions need to be filled on the night of the AGM in order for the Parent Committee to operate smoothly.

25

Fundraising Fundraising plays a vital role in the Kindergarten. In the current economic climate the need to raise extra money through fundraising activities is an unfortunate fact of life. While we receive monies through Government grants and fees, this is still not enough to meet the total costs of operating a Kindergarten. We need to raise extra money each year through fundraising in order to balance our budget. During the year the Kindergarten runs a number of different fundraising events such as raffles, toy catalogues, family portraits etc... We value your commitment to fundraising but do not expect families to feel they must take part in every activity. If you feel you are unable to support all fundraisers, please choose those that appeal the most.

Toys We actively discourage children from bringing toys to Kindergarten that promote violence and war type behaviour that can be reflected in their play, such as guns and swords. While we recognise that some children feel the need to play out ideas and emotions viewed on many types of media, Kindergarten Staff choose to facilitate childrens learning to participate in play that reflects the safety of themselves and others. If toys are brought in, children will be asked to put them in their bag to stay safe until home time. Please remember that toys in general can get easily lost or broken at Kindergarten and are much safer at home

26

Accidents The first aid cabinet is kept well stocked and kept up to date. Where a child is injured at Kindergarten, the course of action to be taken lies with a member of Staff. Minor accidents (grazes, bumps, small cuts and scratches etc), will be treated at the Kindergarten, and the Parent informed when picking up their child and asked to sign the Incident/Accident/Injury/Illness form. All Staff are trained in first aid. For accidents requiring medical attention, the Parents or emergency contact will be called to take the child to hospital for treatment. In cases of extreme emergency, the ambulance will be called first and Parents notified as soon as possible. In all cases the welfare of the child is the first priority.

Health and Safety/Emergency Management We take every precaution to protect children at the Centre from any hazard likely to cause serious injury. We have developed an evacuation procedure, and drills will be practiced with Staff and children each term. A copy of our Emergency Management Plan is on display at the Kindergarten in the front foyer and in the Office. If you are staying at Kinder for longer than 10 minutes, please sign in the Visitors Book on the shelf in the front foyer. This allows Staff to have a record of adults who are at Kinder in case of a real emergency. If any Parent is at Kinder during a practise fire drill, you will be required to follow the directions given by Staff and join in the fire drill evacuation process. Sickness If your child is feeling unwell, the best place for them to be is at home. It can be quite difficult to be at Kinder when you are sick, so for the sake of your child and to eliminate the risk of infection to other children and Staff, please be mindful. 27

A GENERAL RULE is if children are not well enough to play outside, they are not well enough to be at Kindergarten. If the child becomes unwell while at kinder and they are unable to participate in the Kindergarten program, the Parent/emergency contact will be phoned and asked to collect their child. Children suffering from infectious diseases are to be kept away from Kindergarten while their condition is contagious (an infectious diseases poster is on display on the front noticeboard.) The period of exclusion applicable in schools will also apply to Kindergartens. If your child has an infectious and communicable disease, or has come into contact with such a disease you must contact the Teacher immediately, so we can continue to ensure the wellbeing of all children accessing this service. These illnesses are a fact of life, especially now your child is amongst other children; they are in no way a reflection on a person or family. If your child has any of the following diseases they are to remain at home for the time stated: Measles 7 days German Measles 4 days Whooping Cough 4 weeks Chicken Pox until recovered Mumps until recovered School Sores until treated, must be covered Common Colds until recovered Vomiting/Diarrhoea at least 24 hours after last attack. Slap Cheek Virus (Fifth Disease) staff must be notified. Child excluded if unwell Head Lice/Worms until treated

28

Medication If medication needs to be administered to your child by Staff during a Kindergarten session, it must be recorded in the Kindergarten Medication Book. Parents must ensure that prescription medication has the original label on it with the following: Childs name Doctors instructions to administer medication Expiry date. Medication must be provided in the original container Parents must ensure non-prescription and over the counter medication must be clearly labelled with Childs name Instructions to administer medication Expiry date All medication is to be handed directly to Staff and NOT left in a childs kinder bag. Two Staff members check and administer authorised medication to children and Parents will be asked to sign the Medication Book when they collect their child. Children who suffer from Asthma, Allergies/Sensitivities or Anaphylaxis will need to supply a current medical management plan (with guidance from a Doctor) and all medications your child requires needs to either stay at Kinder for the entire year or be handed in at the start of each session and collected again at the end of the day.
