Welcome to the cider and perry bar. Responding to
feedback from last years festival this year we have an
additional cider/perry bar in the carriage room.
Furthermore, the Carriage Room Bar will feature a different
range from that in the Main Hall, thereby increasing the
overall choice. All the ciders and perries sold here are real
in the sense that they consist of nothing but fermented
apple and fermented pear juice respectively. You will
find that the majority of ciders and perries come from the
traditional cider making areas in the West Country where
apple and pear varieties are grown specifically for cider/
perry making. Despite this, cider making in other parts of
the country is on the increase and we have a number of
ciders from the East Midlands as well as some from Norfolk
and Kent. The range of styles and tastes is considerable and
the staff will be happy to give you small tastes provided
we are not too busy.
The tub labels should give you a pretty good idea of what
to expect when ordering. Green labels are cider and yellow
labels are perry. Most ciders / perries are made from a blend
of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been
used this will be identified on the tub label. All the ciders
and perries have been tasted prior to the festival and they
have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry,
Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet, again this
is on the label. It is a bit subjective and you may disagree,
but at least it gives you a starting point. Many ciders are
naturally hazy or even cloudy although really thick ciders,
complete with floating bits, are fortunately a thing of
the past. That is plenty if introduction; you could easily
have drunk half a pint of cider while you are reading this!
