The NS-120 is the new low-end unified storage platform to replace the NS20. The NS-480 is the new mid-range unified storage platform to replace the NS40. The NS-120 and NS-480 are a technology refresh with the new CLARiiON CX4 storage array on the backend. The new integrated CLARiiON CX4 back end storage offers advanced functionality like dual protocol capabilities, hot pluggable IO modules for online expansion, and the ability to support future technologies. This technology also provides fiber channel and iSCSI ports for use by Celerra MPFS. The new platforms will offer increased storage capacity (up to 120 drives for NS-120 and up to 480 drives for NS-480). The new systems allow for a wide variety of connectivity options (NAS, iSCSI, FC and MPFS ) based on the customers needs. A provisioning wizard is now an integral part of the Celerra Startup Assistant (CSA). Where CSA provides a simple, guided installation and system test process, a provisioning wizard adds a guided process for initial configuration of the Celerra for production usage.

Celerra NS-120, NS-480 brings CX4 advanced functionality to Fibre Channel attached hosts
NS-120 and NS-480 Technical Pre-Sales - 6

The NS-120 and NS-480 are ideal for engagements where the environment requires file server and a storage consolidation solution. The unified storage (NAS, iSCSI, FC and MPFS ) capabilities provide a single platform for file server consolidation (NAS) and storage consolidation (iSCSI, Fiber Channel, MPFS). Consolidating with a Celerra unified storage means customers can control costs, improve backups, and increase availability. A typical customer deployment may consist of VMware servers, Exchange, SQL, or Oracle applications. The option to leverage the CLARiiON CX4 backend array provides additional flexibility and investment protection for deployment options.

CLARiiON AX4

Requirements
Lowest price point Single protocol is required (iSCSI or FC) RepliStor is a viable option for iSCSI remote replication.

Celerra NX4

NS-120 and NS-480 Technical Pre-Sales - 7

The CLARiiON AX4 price point is lower than the NX4 and is suitable for environments where only a single protocol is required (iSCSI or Fiber Channel). The NX4 is ideal for price-sensitive engagements where the environment requires file server and a storage consolidation solution. The unified storage (NAS, iSCSI and FC) capabilities provide a single platform for file server consolidation (NAS) and storage consolidation (iSCSI, Fiber Channel). The NS-120 or NS-480 should be positioned when the scalable capacity requirements exceed what the NX4 can offer. Also, these platforms should be positioned where more fiber channel SAN ports are required over what can be accommodated by the NX4. For all other requirements (i.e. synchronous replication), position the CLARiiON CX4, emphasizing the CX4 technology innovations and business impacts.

Here we can build from the previous example to include the fiber channel option that can accommodate application servers (SQL, Exchange, or Oracle) requiring greater bandwidth to access storage. MPFS can also use the fiber channel structure for any applications requiring a higher degree of performance. iSCSI can still be used for application servers requiring block storage where access via iSCSI is acceptable and NAS connectivity can still be used for Home Directories, shared data, general purpose files via CIFS, NFS, and/or FTP access.

Another option that is viable for high performance implementation is MPFS via iSCSI. Here the servers can connect directly (or via network) to the backend storage array via iSCSI and receive all the meta data via the existing LAN. As with the previous example, iSCSI can still be used for application servers requiring block storage where access via iSCSI over the LAN is acceptable and NAS connectivity can still be used for Home Directories, shared data, general purpose files via CIFS, NFS, and/or FTP access. MPFS now supports RHEL 5 u2 and SLES 10 sp2 hosts.

The Celerra Startup Assistant (CSA) is a Windows application (installer is in the Apps and Tools CD). The CSA is an initial-configuration tool, not a management tool, and is used to setup the NAS systems post-install at the customer site. For the NS-120 or NS-480 platforms, the CSA has a new cable check script and cable check help pages for troubleshooting cabling issues. The CSA can setup the Control Stations external network interface (like Init Wizard), run the health checks, assist in correcting cabling errors, setup public IP addresses for SPA and SPB, setup the Data Movers interface and create test CIFS share / NFS Export / iSCSI LUNs. The CSA can configure the ConnectHome Email Transport service by specifying the email server in CSA initialization screen. Users provide the recipient email addresses to configure and enable the Email User service as part of the same CSA installation. The serial console will be disabled and NAS services will not start until cable verification is complete.

The NS-120 and NS-480 supports MPFS via fiber and iSCSI connectivity. RAID1/0, RAID5, RAID6 with a variety of drive technologies are supported. The hot spare rule remains a minimum of one hot spare for every thirty FC drives and one hot spare for every thirty SATA drives. The CLARiiON software and layered applications supported when the FC option is purchased are:
Full Navisphere License and media kit Navi Analyzer NQM (Navisphere Quality of Service Manager) MirrorView/Sync (for Celerra w/RPQ, Windows, and UNIX hosts) MirrorView/Async (for Windows and UNIX hosts) SnapView Full (for Windows and UNIX hosts) SAN Copy (for Windows and UNIX hosts) Virtual Provisioning (for non-Celerra hosts) Host-based SW: Powerpath, Recoverpoint, Replistor and Replication Mgr MirrorView/Sync is the only layered application supported with the Celerra.

The NS-120 and NS-480 does not provide support for dual Control Stations. No gateway configuration is supported and therefore, no support is available for Symmetrix dependent features such as TimeFinder and SRDF. A UPS is provided for the backend array, not for the Celerra Data Movers. Although SATA vault drives are supported in the NS-120, there is no support for SATA vault drives in the NS-480.

AccessLogix is enabled for all configurations on the NS-120 and NS-480. The Celerra Storage Group (Celerra_emcnas_i0) will be created and the Control LUNs 0-5 and user LUNs will be created and added to the Storage Group. Celerra Raid Group 0 (RG0) will be fully provisioned for user LUNs on all configurations. Sharing of RG0 with other non-Celerra hosts is not a best practice. On the NS-480 backend (CX4-480), the default CLARiiON read cache size has increased from 32 MB to 512 MB. To re-install an existing system, nas_raid s cleanup can be used to cleanup the backend. On the non-FC platforms (NS-120/NS-120I/NS-480/NS-480I) Celerra Tools (Celerra Manager, setup_clariion2 etc) should be used for storage management (creating Raid Groups, LUNs etc). The setup_clariion2 tool can be used to create raid groups and LUNs on un-configured disks. It will also add the new LUNs to the Celerra Storage Group. For the NS-120F and NS-480F systems, CLARiiON Tools (Navisphere Manager) should be used for storage management (similar to a Gateway configuration).

Like NS20/NS40 systems, NS-120 and NS-480 will offer public access to CLARiiON SPs. Proxy ARP provides access to the SPs although the SPs are on the NS internal network. To service the array, public IP addresses are needed for the SPs for all configurations to allow the use of the Navisphere Service Taskbar (NST). Also, public IP access for the SPs is needed when managing the array via Navisphere Manager (FC option).
