We are a non-profit social business. Our aim is to combine great design with great fair trade projects in order to make as much impact for fair trade as we can. We have approached eighteen designers and illustrators to work with one of Nepals founding fair trade groups for a collection for the Design Museum shop. This project is designed to provide work and literacy for adult weavers, and schooling for their children.

Node are Chris Haughton and Akshay Sthapit. Chris is a childrens book author and illustrator who has been working in fair trade for the last nine years. He was listed in TIME magazines DESIGN 100 for the work he has been doing for fair trade. In 2010, Chris spent eight months in India and Nepal working with fair trade groups. There, he began developing rugs with a fairtrade technical school. Chris sought Akshays help to grow the project. Akshay is a Kathmandu based entrepreneur with a passion for social projects. Together they call themselves NODE with the aim of connecting designers and artists together with craft based social projects. After a successful exhibition in the SO FAR THE FUTURE design gallery on Lambs Conduit St, London, they have created this collection which will be exclusively available from the Design Museum Shop.

We produce all our rugs with Kumbeshwar Technical School in Kathmandu, Nepal. Kumbeshwar was set up by the Khadgi family who are traditionally from the pode community, the lowest caste in Nepal. In 1983 the Khadgi family created a non-profit technical school to help their caste out of poverty. Their work now has now extended to all disadvantaged individuals. Their weaving school recruits disadvantaged adults and offers an adult education and support centre. As well as given fair wages, their weavers are taught literacy and skills. With profits from the sales of rugs and crafts they also fund a large school of 260 with well trained and well paid teachers, providing students with free books and meals. In addition, they fund an orphanage for 25 children. KTS are a founder member of Fair Trade Nepal and are WFTO accredited.

We produce our carpets entirely by hand using traditional Tibetan carpet making techniques to the highest possible quality. Nepal is well known for its high quality weaving and this project was set up with help from skilled master weavers. All our carpets are made from Tibetan wool. The wool from high altitude Tibetan breeds of sheep is naturally thick and Tibetan rugs are famous for their thickness and durability. The wool is hand spun into thread, hand dyed with natural and non-polluting dyes and then hand-knotted on our looms into carpet.

Node have come from a background in digital imaging and we worked closely with all the artists and the weavers to find the best possible ways to convert each artwork into woven rugs.

All the rugs are limited editions of 10 rugs and each are hand signed by the artists. They measure 1.75m x 1.15m and are available from the Design Museum shop for 950 including delivery to your home.

Petra Brner grew up in a small town in Sweden and her Scandinavian roots are present in her work. She started her career at a Stockholm animation studio and developed her drawing style through collaborations with magazines during her fashion studies at Central St Martins in London. Without formal training in illustration within an increasingly digital market, shes established her work using a hands-on approach, often involving collage or basic embroidery. Bridging illustration with fashion & lifestyle design, her work features in fashion and interior design, as well as on book covers and publications worldwide. Now based in London, she divides her time between the continued demand for commissioned artwork, whilst further developing her own work and product range. The rug, designed by Petra Brner in collaboration with Made by Node, is titled Klang. The Swedish title translates as tone, referring to a colour or a happy sound. The rug is created to add a Klang to your home and put a smile on the users face. The original artwork was cut in paper, before being interpreted into the handmade rug design. petraborner.com

Geoff McFetridge is an artist based in Los Angeles, California. Born in Canada, he was schooled at the Alberta College of Art and the Graduate Design Program at the California Institute of the Arts. Known mainly for his work as a graphic designer, he instinctively ignores creative boundaries. His work speaks with a graphic-ness that is the fulcrum for a diverse art practice. Public language is his personal language. His drawings, prints, patterns and paintings present themselves as both familiar and new. The imagery is refined to a point of anonymous functionality. His work is anti-experimental, attempting to pass as part of our visual lexicon. His works are impostors; invented images meant to appear found. His relationship with popular culture is one of participation. His works are the guest of a friend of a friend at your dinner party; a new letter quietly slipped into the alphabet. championdontstop.com
