Conguring Your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server

This chapter will familiarize you with basic system commands to help you congure your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server for basic functionality. It does not cover every feature, but does include the following:

LAN and WAN conguration to include ISDN, Primary Rate Interface (PRI), and Channelized T1 and E1 ingress lines Modem conguration to include modem pooling Features supported to include multiple switch types, Non-Facility Associated Signaling (NFAS), virtual private dial-up networking (VPDN), modem pooling, and Multichassis Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MMP) to name a few

The conguration information in this chapter assumes you understand group asynchronous interfaces, basic asynchronous modem conguration, and autoselect. Users dialing in must be running Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) or Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) to dial in and access IP resources. For each of the following conguration examples, dial-in users are assumed to belong to one subnet. This enables all remote clients to appear as belonging to one Ethernet segment (from the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server perspective). New commands supporting your access server are included in the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server Feature Module that shipped with your system. For complete information regarding Cisco IOS software, refer to the section If You Need More Information, in the chapter About This Guide. Before you power on your access server and begin using the setup script, verify you have completed the steps noted in the section Using the Setup Script in the chapter Starting Up Your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server for the First Time. Continue to the section Conguring the Host Name and Password.

Configuring Your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server 3-1

Configuring the Host Name and Password

Conguring the Host Name and Password

One of the rst conguration tasks you should do is to congure the host name and set an encrypted password. Conguring a host name allows you to distinguish multiple access servers from each other. Setting an encrypted password allows you to prevent unauthorized conguration changes. Conguring the host name and password is part of the initial setup script. Table 3-1 lists the commands to help you congure your host name and passwords.

Table 3-1 Step

1

Conguring the Host Name and Passwords Description Enter the enable command. Enter your password. You are in privileged EXEC mode when the prompt changes to Router#.

Command
Router> enable Password: password Router#

Router# configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with Ctrl-Z. Router(config)#

Enter global conguration mode by typing the congure command. The example is using the terminal conguration option. You are in global conguration mode when the prompt changes to Router(config)#.

Router(config)# hostname AS5800-1 AS5800-1(config)#

Changes the host name to the name designated by your site. The example shows the new host name to be AS5800-1. Substitute your own host name for the one shown. Enter line conguration mode to congure the console port. You are in line conguration mode when the prompt changes to AS5800-1(config-line)#.

AS5800-1(config)# line shelf/slot/port AS5800-1(config-line)# exec-timeout 0 0

Conguring Dial Shelf Interconnect Protocol (DSIP)

Your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server uses a protocol used by the Cisco 7206 router shelf to communicate back and forth with the Cisco 5814 dial shelf controller card(s) and feature cards. Although dial shelf interconnect (DSI) conguration is transparent to the user, there are several show commands to help you view your setup, and debug commands to help you troubleshoot your system. Examples of commonly used show commands are included for your convenience. For additional information regarding DSI show and debug commands, refer to the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server Feature Module.

Configuring Clocking

Verify
Verify the VLAN setup (VLAN ID, network address, protocol, and packets received and transmitted) using the show vlan command.
AS5800-1# show vlan Virtual LAN ID: 10 (Inter Switch Link Encapsulation) vLAN Trunk Interface: FastEthernet0.10 Protocols Configured: Address: Received: X 10.00e0.1e6b.2f03 3

Transmitted: 5

Tips
If packets are not being routed:

Enter the debug vlan packets command. When you nish viewing the messages, enter the no debug vlan packets command to shut off messages.
AS5800-1# debug vlan packets Virtual LAN packet information debugging is on vLAN: ISL packet received bearing colour ID 16 on FastEthernet0 which has no subinterface configured to route or bridge ID 16.

Conguring Clocking
The Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) bus on the dial shelf backplane can receive an input clock from one of three basic sources:

Any trunk ports in slots 0 through 5 (up to 12 can be selected; two per slot) An External T1/E1 clock source feed directly through a connector on the dial shelf controller card A free-running clock from an oscillator in the clocking hardware on the dial shelf controller card.

Configuring Your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server 3-11

Configuring Clocking

Trunk Ports
The TDM bus can be synchronized with the trunk card T1/E1 clocks. Each trunk card that is loaded in slots 0 through 5 (as noted on the dial shelf backplane) is capable of providing up to 12 8-KHz clocking references (one per port); however, a maximum of two clocking sources per trunk card (thus, a maximum of 12) can get forwarded to the dial shelf controller card.

External Clock
The TDM bus can be synchronized with an external clock source on the dial shelf controller card, which can be used as an additional network reference. The dial shelf controller card then uses one of the clocks forwarded to it as the primary source to generate a stable Phase Lock Loop (PLL) synchronized output clock. If no clocks are congured, the system will attempt to assign a clock as primary using a software-controlled default algorithm. If you want the external clock as the primary clock source, you must congure it using CLI commands; the external clock is never selected by default.

Free-Running Clock
When the Dial Shelf Controller (DSC) comes up after the system is powered on, there is no good clocking source from a trunk card or external clock source. This causes the clocking to run from the local oscillator. The free-running clocking source is transparent to the user; thus, no conguration is required.

3-12 Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server Software Installation and Configuration Guide

Configuring Clocking

Table 3-4 lists commands to help you congure the clock source and clock source priority used by the TDM bus:

Table 3-4 Step

Conguring ISDN Switch Types

Your Cisco AS5800 access server is designed to support multiple switch types, which allows a switch type to be dened per interface. You can also change the switch type without having to reload the router; however, you will need to perform a reload on your router if you change the global switch type. The National ISDN (NI) switch type supports Non-Facility Associated Signaling (NFAS), a single D-channel used to control multiple PRI interfaces on a T1 interface. In other words, one or two D-channels can control up to 24 T1 PRIs, as opposed to having one D-channel per PRI. To congure the ISDN switch servicing your T1 or E1 lines, you must obtain the switch types offered by your telephone service provider.

Note Verify your ISDN switch types match those offered by your telco. Your switch-type

options apply to Primary Rate Interface (PRI) . In the United States, your switch options include 5ESS, DMS100, and NI. Outside the United States, your switch-type options include NET5, NTT, and TS014. For additional information in your area, contact your local telephone service provider.

Conguring ISDN PRI

Table 3-6 lists commands to help you congure access server interfaces for ISDN PRI lines. An additional command is required to allow PRI B-channel selection to be either in ascending (1 to 23) or descending (23 to 1) order. Previously, the router would always choose a B-channel for outgoing calls from the highest free channel (descending). The NI-1997 specication states that channel selection can be ascending or descending. To change the selection from descending to ascending, you must enter the isdn bchan-number-order ascending|descending command.

Note Because some telephone service providers charge more for ISDN data calls, you

might want to congure the isdn incoming-voice data command to process ISDN calls as voice calls, which provides you with data service at a voice billing rate; however, incoming modem calls will not be passed to the modems with this command enabled. Native ISDN calls are directed like a protocol.

Conguring Cable Length

When you congure your channelized T1 trunk cards, you must include the distance of the cable connected to the feature card. To specify this distance, you must use the cablelength command. No cablelength command is required for E1 trunk cards. The cablelength command is designed to recognize two basic xed settings:

Cable Length Short Cable Length Long

3-22 Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server Software Installation and Configuration Guide

Configuring Cable Length

Cable Length Short

The following cable length short congurations dene the length range (in feet), between your Network Access Server (NAS) and your repeater. The cablelength short command is congured for a channelized T1 only and includes the following settings:

133 feet (0-133 feet) 266 feet (134-266 feet) 399 feet (267-399 feet) 533 feet (400-533 feet) 655 feet (534-655 feet)

Note Although you can specify a cable length from 0 to 655 feet, the hardware only

recognizes xed conguration lengths. For example, if your cable length is 50 feet between your NAS and your repeater, you should congure your cable length using the 133-feet setting. If you later change the cable length to 200 feet, you should recongure your cable length using the 266-feet setting.

Cable Length Long

The following cable length long congurations dene the length range in gain and pulse, between your Network Access Server (NAS) and your repeater. The cablelength long command is congured for a channelized T1 only and includes the following gain and pulse arguments:

gain 26 (26db Gain) gain 36 (36db Gain) -15db (-15db pulse) -22.5db (-22.5 db pulse) -7.5db (-7.5 db pulse) 0db (0 db pulse)

Verify the controller reports being up. Verify no errors are reported. Verify output displays no alarms or violations.

Conguring D Channels for Modem Signaling

Congure the ISDN D channels (which carry the control and signaling information for ISDN calls) for each ISDN PRI line, as shown in Table 3-8.

Table 3-8 Step

1

Conguring the D Channels for Modem Signaling Description Enter the enable command. Enter your password. You are in privileged EXEC mode when the prompt changes to AS5800-1#.

Command

Table 3-9 Message

Debug Dialer Messages Description Displayed when a packet is received that should cause a call to be placed. However, there is no dialer string congured, so dialing cannot occur. This message usually indicates a conguration problem. Re-enter the dialer-group command in Step 6 of Table 3-8. Indicates that a packet has been received that passes the dial-on-demand access lists. That packet causes dialing of a phone number. The string variable is the number being called. Displayed if the phone call could not be placed. This can be due to a lack of memory, full output queues, or other problems. Displayed when the access server attempts to hang up a call. One of these three messages is displayed when their corresponding dialer timer expires. They are mostly informational, and are useful when debugging a disconnected call or call failure.

Debug ISDN Messages

Description Indicates this message is being transmitted from the local router (user side) to the network side of the ISDN interface. Indicates this message is being received by the user side of the ISDN interface from the network side. Indicates the SETUP message has been sent to initiate call establishment between peer network layers. The message can be sent from the local router or network. Indicates the protocol discriminator. The protocol discriminator distinguishes messages for call control over the user-network ISDN interface from other ITU-T11-dened messages, including other Q.931 messages. The protocol discriminator is 8 for call control messages such as SETUP. Indicates the call reference number in hexadecimal. The eld value indicates the number of calls made from the router (outgoing calls) or the network (incoming calls). Note that the originator of the SETUP message sets the high-order bit of the call reference number to 0. The destination of the connection sets the high-order bit to 1 in subsequent call control messages, such as the CONNECT message. For example, callref = 0x04 in the request becomes callref = 0x84 in the response.

Conguring Loopback and Ethernet Interfaces

The loopback 0 interface is a virtual IP interface carrying all dial-in users, and it exists only in the Cisco AS5800 access server. You assign an IP network number to the loopback interface, then let each asynchronous interface borrow this network number.

Creating Interfaces for Asynchronous and ISDN Dial-in Services

This section describes how to congure the access server interfaces that enable dial-in clients to make remote asynchronous and ISDN connections to your access server. To congure remote services, you must congure three interrelated interfaces on the Cisco AS5800 access server. The loopback interface makes the network appear as if the dial-in users exist on one Ethernet segment. The loopback interface has the following four types of neighboring interfaces used for dial-in operations: ISDN interface, dialer interface, group asynchronous interface, and asynchronous interface.

3-34 Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server Software Installation and Configuration Guide

Configuring Loopback and Ethernet Interfaces

All dial-in users exist on one dial-in subnet. Remote asynchronous users dial in through the group asynchronous interface to the access server. Remote ISDN users dial in through the ISDN dialer interface to the access server. Table 3-11 lists commands to help you congure the loopback and Ethernet interface.

Table 3-11 Step

Conguring Loopback and Ethernet Interface Description Enter the enable command. Enter your password. You are in privileged EXEC mode when the prompt changes to AS5800-1#.

Command
AS5800-1> enable Password: password AS5800-1#

AS5800-1# configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with Ctrl-Z. AS5800-1(config)#

Enter global conguration mode by typing the congure command. The example is using the terminal conguration option. You are in global conguration mode when the prompt changes to AS5800-1(config)#.

AS5800-1(config)# interface loopback 0 %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Loopback0, changed state to up AS5800-1(config)# interface Ethernet shelf/slot/port AS5800-1(config-if)# ip address ip-address subnet-mask AS5800-1(config-if)# no shutdown

Create interface loopback 0, which is the logical IP subnet containing all dial-in users addresses. You are in interface mode when the prompt changes to AS5800-1(config-if)#. Congure Ethernet interface 0 and assign it an IP address from the subnet address on the network to which you are enabling dial-in access. Enable the interface using the no shutdown command.

Step
3

Command
AS5800-1(config)# interface group-async 0 AS5800-1(config-if)# AS5800-1(config-if)# ip unnumbered ethernet 0

Purpose Place all asynchronous interfaces in a single group, so that you congure the same parameters quickly on all interfaces at one time. The default setting is 0. To conserve IP addresses, congure the asynchronous interfaces as unnumbered, and assign the IP address of the Ethernet interface to them. Enable PPP to run on the set of interfaces in the group. Congure interactive mode on the asynchronous interface to allow telnet users access through a port. Enable CHAP and PAP authentication on the interface. Support dial-in PC clients. At the global level, dene the pool of addresses. Dene the group range of the interface. The number you use with the group-range command depends on the number of asynchronous interfaces you have on your access server. That is, if your access server has 48 asynchronous interfaces, you can specify group-range shelf/slot/1 shelf/slot/48. If 60, specify group-range shelf/slot/1 shelf/slot/60. Type the exit command to exit out of interface conguration mode [or] Press the return key to verify your command registers, then type Ctrl-Z to return to privileged EXEC mode. Save your changes when ready.

Creating the Asynchronous Group Interface

An asynchronous group interface is the parent interface that applies protocol characteristics to specied asynchronous ports. The default setting places all modems in group async 0. You must rst remove them from this group before you can add them to another group.

AS5800-1(config)# interface Group-Async 0 no group-range

The default setting for group asynchronous interface is zero. You must rst remove an interface from this group before you can congure it with another group. Congure the interface for the designated asynchronous group. To conserve IP addresses, congure the asynchronous interfaces as unnumbered, and assign the IP address of the Ethernet interface to them. Congure TCP header compression as passive to allow greater throughput on the line. Enable PPP to run on the set of interfaces in the group.

Conguring the ISDN Dialer Interface

The ISDN dialer interface is the parent interface that holds the central protocol characteristics for the two ISDN D channels that are part of dialer rotary-group 1. The previous section, Creating the Asynchronous Group Interface, described how to congure the ISDN D channels on serial interfaces.

Note Because some telephone service providers charge more for ISDN data calls, you

might want to congure the ISDN incoming-voice data command to process ISDN calls as voice calls, which provides you with data service at a voice billing rage; however, incoming modem calls will not be passed to the modems with this command enabled. Native ISDN calls are directed like a protocol.

Enable both D channels to access their core protocol intelligence from interface dialer 1. Associate all ISDN users with the subnet congured on loopback interface 0. Congure PPP on the dialer interface. Assign a common IP address pool. PPP packets coming through an asynchronous line and an ISDN line share this common IP pool. The default address pool is specied in the section Conguring the Asynchronous Group Interface. Enable the access server to build dynamic mapping of IP addresses to the ISDN B channels. Specify the dialer group number for this interface. Dene the number of seconds that a line is idle before it hangs up. The default value is 300 seconds (5 minutes). The dialer list command denes the interesting trafc, which is the trafc that resets the idle-timeout or triggers a dial if the line is down and you have a number to send.

Conguring Modem Pooling

Use modem pooling to dene, select, and use separate pools of modems within a single Cisco AS5800 access server to enable different dial-in services for different customers. The primary application is to allocate specic modems based on called party numbers and a predetermined number of modem ports based on Dialed Number Information Service (DNIS). If you do not congure any modem pools, all the modems are placed in a single pool. There is no restriction on the number of modem pools that you can congure, however, holes are not allowed in the range. A pool can contain a minimum of one modem and a maximum equal to all the modems in the system. When new modems are inserted, they are congured according to the modem-pool denition. Table 3-17 lists commands to help you set up modem pool conguration. For detailed information on this feature, refer to the command reference documents that shipped with your Cisco AS5800 access server.

Note To support modem pooling over channelized T1 lines, verify you have congured

the lines as described in Table 3-7 of section Conguring Channelized T1 or E1.

AS5800-1(config)# modem-pool modem_pool_name

Enter the name of the modem to congure for pooling. Dene the range of the modems in the pool. A dash is required between the two numbers. Specify the called number to be used for this modem pool. The called number string can have an integer x to indicate a dont care digit for that position. The max-conn option species the maximum number of connections allowed for this called number. If you do not specify a max-conn value, the default (total number of modems in the pool) is used. The max-conn values can range from one to the total number of modems in the pool.

Tips

Verify you have not congured the same called party number for multiple pools. Verify you have not placed modems in multiple pools.

Conguring MMP
If you have multiple access servers stacked together to provide a front end for receiving access calls, you can congure Multichassis Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MMP) so that Multilink PPP (MP) call processing can be ofoaded to other access servers. MMP support on a group of access servers requires that each access server be congured to support the following:

Stack Group Bidding Protocol (SGBP) Virtual templates used for cloning interface congurations to support MMP Multilink PPP

Create a stack group and assign this access server to it. Specify the host name and IP address of the peer member of the stack group. In this example there are two peers: systemb and systemc. Set the bidding level for a stack group member. Ofoad indicates that this access server is a relatively higher powered stack group member. The access server will function as an ofoad server and host the master bundle interface. Dene a virtual template1 for the stack group. Specify an IP address pool by using any pooling mechanismfor example, IP local pooling or DHCP2 pooling. Create a virtual template interface, and enter interface conguration mode. Creating Authentication Accounts

You can create authentication accounts for other routers in an MMP stack. If your stack name is STACK1, you need to create a user account called STACK1 on each router with the same password.
username STACK1 password cisco sgbp group STACK1 sgbp member <other router name> <other router IP address>

Conguring VPDN
Virtual private dial-up networking (VPDN) enables users to congure secure networks that take advantage of Internet service providers (ISPs) that tunnel a companys remote access trafc through the ISP cloud. Table 3-19 lists commands to help you congure VPDN. Remote ofces or mobile users can connect to their home network using local third-party dial-up services. The dial-up service provider agrees to forward the companys trafc from the ISP point of presence (POP) to a company-run home gateway. Network conguration and security remains in the control of the client. The dial-up service provider provides a virtual connection between the companys sites.

Note The MMP feature uses VPDN to connect multiple PPP sessions for which individual

dial-in calls have arrived on different stack group members. VPDN provides speed and reliability for the setup and shutdown of Multilink PPP.

Tips

Use debug commands to troubleshoot the VPDN protocol to view information on errors, events, and packets. Check the gateway name and network access server (NAS) name, then verify the virtual access interface is up. Enter debug vpdn ? command to view a list of debug VPDN commands:
AS5800-1# debug vpdn ? error VPDN Protocol errors event VPDN event l2f-errors L2F protocol errors l2f-events L2F protocol events l2f-packets L2F protocol packets packet VPDN packet

Enter debug commands to view error information. When you nish viewing the messages, enter the no debug vpdn command to shut off the debug messages: The following is a sample output for the debug vpdn event command:
AS5800-1# debug vpdn event VPN events debugging is on *Feb 15 17:55:49.367: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Virtual-Access239, changed state to down *Feb 15 17:55:49.547: Virtual-Access249 VPN reset *Feb 15 17:55:49.547: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Virtual-Access249, changed state to down

Creating Authentication Accounts

You can create authentication accounts for other routers between the NAS and the home gateway for VPDN. A NAS example is as follows:
username NAS password cisco username home gateway password cisco vpdn enable vpdn outgoing cisco.com NAS ip 191.120.33.4

A home gateway example is as follows:

username NAS password cisco username home gateway password cisco vpdn enable vpdn incoming NAS home gateway virtual-template 1

Dening a Routing Protocol and Domain Name

To complete the conguration, you must dene a routing protocol and a domain name. You also can specify a domain name server to resolve host names and IP addresses. Table 3-20 lists commands to help you congure routing protocol and domain name.

Enabling DNS and NBNS Services for PPP Users

Dial-in clients using PPP and applications such as CiscoRemote, Windows NT, and Windows 95 need Domain Name Service (DNS) and NetBIOS Name Service (NBNS) address information as described in RFC 1877. Use the procedure shown in Table 3-21 to enter parameters to enable Telnet users to gather this information transparently as part of the PPP negotiation.
