MMA/Boxing Senior Capstone February 2013 Carlos Montiel I.

Introduction It was two years ago when I started considering what is best for me? Money, fame, glory? Or is it something that every human being should be fighting for, health. As a young child I was fat. I never did anything other than Watching TV and eat sweets. My mother put in a youth soccer team in order to make me healthier; it didnt work of course I hated playing soccer. It wasnt a bad sport; I just dont find it interesting. But then I started to pay more attention to my health when I witnessed a boxing match between 45 year old George Foreman and 27 year old Michael Moore, a night were Foreman knocked out the younger stronger opponent. The idea of a man who is past his prime, a man who everyone thought couldnt make it has done it. He beat the odds. He showed that 40 is not a death bed, its just a number, and anyone can be healthy.

Im not planning on making MMA or boxing as a career choice for me, I have my goals as a graphic novelist, but Boxing and MMA give me ideas about physical fitness. Every fighter I see is thin healthy and strong, even the ones who are not thin can still do things a average skinny person cant do. This also applies for the people who look towards these sports as a healthy exercise. Combat sports to me and to a lot of people are the best cardio work out. According to fitday.com Boxing/MMA is an excellent way get a great cardio workout. Boxing is considered by many to be one of the best exercises because of its ability to help

MMA/Boxing Senior Capstone February 2013 Carlos Montiel condition the entire body in one workout. It is also the most interesting forms of losing weight. I wanted to try it out badly so when David came and asked if I wanted to join his MMA club I jumped in. He taught us how to fight and to protect ourselves, at the end of the day we sparred with someone for three Minutes. It wasn't bad, I actually got up and exercised to keep up with every one else, the problem is that I had to do the exercise in my own time, all we did was stretch. But Davids capstone was only about combating stress and it worked. But I'm going to go with a more of a health class; I'm going use the exercises that fighters use to stay in shape. I really think Boxing or MMA or any other combat sport should be a class in schools. Boxing and MMA have the best cardio work out there, if implemented in schools; I think we will see positive results.

The challenges I will face will be acting like a coach figure. Some fighters slack off a lot and its the coaches that are supposed to put them back in place. The problem is that I'm not good at bossing people around and people who join the club might get lazy and leave. I've seen it before in other clubs. I will have to turn a new leaf, man up and try to pursue people to stay.

My initial argument is that MMA as a health is the most efficient way of losing and maintaining weight. In addition it will introduce students into different cultures with many different styles of combat and exercising.

My capstone will address three of the Asia Society GPS Leader Ship outcome: Investigate the world, communicating skills and taking action. MMA is a mixture of martial arts from around the world like western boxing, Wrestling, and Japans karate. By learning these different styles, we learn about the different cultures of the world. We can have participants input their own ideas into the club. We can take action by attending the club three times a week, teaching the students the proper techniques for exercising, eating right.

Form My Capstone will have three forms. The first is a 6-8 page college level research paper with citations and work cited page. The second will be forming my MMA club which will take place three times a week. The third will be a presentation and defense of learning. The Audience for the presentation will be Ms. Devaney, Mr. Jaramillo, and members of the MMA club.
