As part of the first year program we took part in a 3 day military style basic survival training camp in Chilliwack. -My musical training in violin and piano began from an early age, though it was the latter that has held my interest to date. By high school, I was completing more advanced examinations in piano performance that enabled me to participate in music fully, in school as well as extracurricularly. In 2009 I became accompanying pianist for some audition-based orchestras in our school music program. I thoroughly enjoyed this program; concerts, tutorials, off timetable classes, and orchestra trips were routine and each educational in their own way. I won the school piano concerto competition in 2011 and performed with the symphony orchestra. It would be fair to say that music was slightly more taxing in the extracurricular aspect. experience changed perspective 200w significant challenge Last year was the year I came out as gay to my friends and family. Throughout my high school years it was a hard struggle between keeping it to myself or to confide in someone. The former won for the most part. It was only during my senior high school year that a new student to our school helped me realize that there was really nothing to fear from other people by being open. He achieved this not through counselling or supporting me but by the fact that he was openly bisexual, and wildly popular nonetheless. I qualify the use of the word 'nonetheless' by adding that my view of the social stigma around being sexually different from other people was cynical at best. In truth it was the opposite; almost everyone was supportive in their own way, which was beyond encouraging for me. Needless to say, I was unbelievably glad my initial inhibitions and misgivings were proven wrong.
