ITEMS TO KEEP IN MIND Run the engine after permission of Sandfirden Technics bv only. Sandfirden Technics bv must be timely asked for attendance by a mechanic who will inspect the installation, after which an appointment for commissioning will be made. If the engine installation angle is more than 10 degrees, longitudinal or transverse always contact Sandfirden Technics bv. From a service point of view, be sure, there is sufficient space around the engine. After mounting the engine, immediately connect a permanent earthing-cable. Avoid electrical contact with welding-cables on the set. Avoid the use of copper, brass or galvanised piping for cooling-and fuel systems. The use of these materials can easily lead to galvanic damage of the engine block and injection system. Keep the plastic protection intact as long as possible and protect the engine by means of additional welding-blankets or equivalent. Please send us your installation drawings as soon as possible, so that we can check them. Be aware however, that although we have seen them and signed off, Sandfirden Technics bv can never be held responsible for the installation of the engine, unless of course, we installed the sets ourselves.

Installation requirements

Engine mounting There are many designs possible for propulsion installation such as: Rigid mounting with the gearbox housing connected to the engine; Flexible mounting with the gearbox housing connected to the engine with or without thrust-bearing on the propeller shaft; Engine flexibly mounted and the gearbox rigidly mounted. An additional flexible coupling between gearbox and propeller shaft is an option too. For special purpose, more designs are possible. Therefore, it is not possible to give strict rules for your installation. Please contact the technical dept. if you need additional info.

AIR INLET SYSTEM The engine air consumption is approx. 6,5m per 100 kW output, with a temperature of 35C. Accurate figures for each engine are available. The recommended maximum air inlet temperature is 35 C. Temperatures up to 50C are possible but will lead to loss of output capacity. It is recommended to position the air filter inlet away from the ceiling in order to avoid high inlet temperatures. Turbo inlet pressure may drop not more than 30 mbar (3kPa) under ambient pressure, measured with clean air-filter. The max. engine room temperature is 60C in case a separate air inlet line is used. The air-inlet must be located in such a way, that there is no risk of water or exhaust-gas entering it.

Installation requirements

EXHAUST SYSTEM Sandfirden Technics can supply you the correct exhaust-flow figures for all engine-types. The recommended maximum gas-flow-speed is 47 m/sec. The max. full-load exhaust-back pressure is max. 50mBar(5kPa). A socket must be welded on the exhaust pipe at minimum 1000mm and max. 1400mm from the turbo-compressor to measure exhaust temperature and backpressure. In order to avoid too much torque on the turbo, the expansion joint must be installed directly on the 90-exhaust knee of the turbo. Expansion of the exhaust line must be taken into account, e.g. by providing sliding supports and always one fixed support, which must be installed close to the expansion-joint on the engine.

CLOSED CRANKCASE VENTILATION If a closed system is fitted, no additional piping is required.

EXTERNAL CRANKCASE VENTILATION Using an external system, the gases are led outside the engine-room by means of yard installed piping. Carter breather pipe: Diameter i = 40 mm. at 150 kW max. length 15 meter. Diameter i = 50 mm > 150 kW max. length 15 meter. Diameter i = 75 mm with length > 15 meter. The line must be routed up from the engine avoiding pockets. Pockets will collect oil and/or water, which will cause a pressure rise in the crank-case. Close to the engine, a drainable condensation-collecting pipe must be constructed. It is not allowed to combine crankcase ventilation systems from different engines. Condensation in the non- running engines can cause severe corrosion damage.

Installation requirements

COOLING SYSTEM For the correct choice of the coolant treatment for your engine, please contact the technical department. The use of water only is not allowed; it must at least contain sufficient corrosion inhibitor. The coolant-treatment intended for large main-engines is not allowed. See instructions of engine manufacturer. For heat-balance figures please contact our technical department.

KEEL/BOX/WELL COOLING SYSTEM Expansion-tank volume must be 5% of the system volume plus 10 litres. From the highest point of the outgoing coolant pipe a 10-mm vent pipe must be led to the expansion tank, connected under the coolant-level. From the engine vent connection, a 8-mm vent pipe must be led to the expansion tank-bottom. A 25-mm static supply line must be installed from tank-bottom to suction pipe close to the pump. Near the engine at max. 2-meter distance, a pressure balancing line with a regulating valve must be installed between the coolant inlet-and outlet line. Diameter of this balancing line " to ". The static pump inlet-pressure must be 35kPa/0,35 bar minimum and 85kPa (0,85) bar maximum. This over- pressure is the sum of static height and the pressure-cap value.(if installed)

Generally, a separate cooling system for each engine gives the best results. If more engines are combined in one system, the pump pressure of the engine with the lowest pressure must always be sufficiently higher than the system back pressure to ensure a good circulation of the coolant. As a rule of thumb, 3m cooling surface for 100 kW engine output is needed when sailing. This value must be doubled when stationary. Using 2 pipe, 16cm/kW for a sailing ship and 32cm/kW for a stationary ship is needed.

Installation requirements

CHARGE AIR COOLER Sandfirden Technics can supply the heat rejection figures from the charge air cooler circuit on request. The inner coolant pipe diameter must be 25-mm minimum. This separate circuit is not installed in all types.

AIR COOLED RADIATOR To achieve a free airflow, the radiator must be placed at least 50 cm from an opposite wall or other obstacles. Besides hot air must be prevented from re-entering the radiator. The engine room ventilation capacity must be at least equal to the capacity of the radiator fan. If air inlet ducts are mounted, the area must be at least as large as the radiator front area. For air outlet ducts the area must be increased in conformity with the air expansion.

RAW SEA WATER COOLING The maximum suction head of an engine mounted rubber impeller pump is 4 meter. Maximum allowed heat-exchanger water pressure is 2 bar(200kPa). If one external pump is used for more than one set, the heat exchangers for the sets that are not in use must be shut off. This is to avoid wear and corrosion. Sandfirden Technics can supply the needed cooling water flow on request.

FUEL SYSTEM Max. Suction head Sisu/Scania Max. Fuel temperature before injectionpump Max. Static height of fuel-tank above pump : 1 meter : <60 C. : 3,5 mtr.

Installation requirements

Minimum inner fuel supply-and return line diameter up to 6-meter length: Sisu : 8 mm. Scania : 10 mm. If the length is over 6 meter, the diameter must be increased accordingly. The fuel lines must be routed in such way that the fuel cannot be heated by radiation from external sources. An additional fuel-filter with water separation is recommended which should be mounted in the suction line. It must be installed for DI 16. Always use the originally mounted filters and do not change the filter housing position. The fuel-return line must be routed directly to the top of the tank or be equipped with a low resistance check-valve. A hand- operated valve is forbidden, because a blocked return line will cause fuel pump damage. Use of other fuels than gas-oil, as specified by the manufacturer, is allowed only when using additional equipment such as engine heaters, fuel heaters and fuel separators and only after permission from Sandfirden Technics.

AIR START SYSTEM Air for start systems must be dried and filtered 50 (300 mesh) or better.
