EpiCalmin TCM Superdefense by TCM

Strengthens the Skins Natural Defense System EpiCalmin TCM is a synergic combination of 3 plants used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM is holistic and thus looks at the organism as a whole. TCM believes that skin disorders reflect changes in overall health. In collaboration with an expert in TCM, Mibelle Bio chemistry designed a protective and soothing active ingredient called EpiCalmin TCM to reinforce the skins natural defense system. EpiCalmin TCM combines 3 different plants which were selected according to their strong soothing activity long known in TCM. For the first time, Mibelle Biochemistry scientifically demonstrated the mechanism of activity for this specific plant combination by gene array analysis and proved its efficacy by invivo studies. Results showed that EpiCalmin TCM effectively reinforces the skins selfprotection against dehydration, oxidative stress and also degradation of the extracellular matrix. Thus EpiCalmin TCM which is ECOCERT approved, actively protects the skin and prevents premature aging. EpiCalmin TCM Advanced technology confirms traditional knowledge

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Skin Evolved in China about 3000 years ago, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a holistic approach to healthcare by looking at the organism as an indivisible whole. TCM aims to rebalance the bodys energy system after external and internal factors have disturbed it. By combining different methods like phytotherapy, acupressure, diet and tuina (Chinese massage), TCM balances yin and yang with respect to qi (life force), body fluids, the five elements, emotions, the soul and spirit. TCM believes that skin changes reflect the overall health condition because, according to its philosophy, the skin is functionally related to the mind and internal organs through a network of meridians. Thus, the treatment of skin disorders is a wellknown speciality of TCM. TCM Mysterious Herbal Remedies The human body is a very complex organism with thou sands of metabolic processes operating simultaneously. Instead of using single plants with a certain active com pound like in western medicine, TCM mostly combines different therapeutic herbs. Each herb has a distinct role in the formula and the specific combination helps to increase their potency and to minimise side effects. Thus, the secret of TCM lies in the right combination of the remedies. Soothing and Protecting the Skin In collaboration with Dr. Severin Bhlmann who studied both western medicine in Zrich and TCM in Germany and China, Mibelle Biochemistry designed a protecting and soothing active ingredient called EpiCalmin TCM to reinforce the skins natural defense system. EpiCalmin TCM combines 3 different parts of 3 different TCM herbs having excellent medical activities: Flowers of Lonicera japonica Fruits of Xanthium sibiricum Roots of Cyperus rotundus By different scientific methods, including invivo studies and gene array analysis in keratinocytes, this specific combination of remedies was shown to significantly reinforce the skins selfprotection capacity.

Combination of 3 TCM plants Active protection for the skin

A Synergic Combination of 3 TCM Herbs Found in Japan and Korea, Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica, Jin Yin Hua) is a twining liana whose flowers are white to yellow tinged with purple. Its flowers eliminate toxins and have antiinflammatory, antiinfection and antibiotic properties. Infusions of fresh flowers are also used externally to treat skin infections and irritations. Siberian cocklebur (Xanthium sibiricum, Cang Er Zi) fruit has antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammatory and analgesic properties. It spreads the qi and is used to treat sinus and nasal problems, spasms and cramps in the muscles and also rashes and itching skin. Besides, it is able to inhibit the allergic effects of histamine. Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus, Xiang Fu) is a peren nial sedge distributed throughout India. Its rhizome which contains antioxidants and inflammation inhibitors, is used to regulate qi and to relieve pain. Skin Protection and Premature Skin Aging The skins most important functions are to protect our body against environmental aggression, to prevent water loss and to regulate body temperature. But solar radiation, pollution and stress strongly impair the skins defensive capacity. Thus the skins ability to face aggressions is reduced making it more sensitive and leading to premature aging.

EpiCalmin TCM Study results

Skin Protection against Irritants In a study with 20 volunteers aged from 22 to 41, Epi almin TCM was found to effectively C protect the skin against chemicallyinduced irritations. Skin test areas on the inner side of forearms were treated with an occlusive patch containing the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as a skin irritant for 24 h. Skin hydration was measured using a corneometer 6 h after removing the patch and during the following days. The skin test sites were treated twice daily with a cream containing 5% EpiCalmin TCM or with the corresponding placebo cream. After 9 days, the occlusive SDS patch treatment was repeated. Again 6h after removing the patch, skin hydration was measured. Results showed that EpiCalmin TCM strongly increased skin hydration after barrier disruption compared to the placebo. Skin hydration remained at a high value even after the second SDS challenge, showing the capability of EpiCalmin TCM to reinforce the skins selfprotection. Skin irritation was also evaluated by measuring the skin redness with a chromameter after the first SDS patch. Results showed that EpiCalmin TCM reduced skin redness after stress. Thus, Epicalmin TCM reinforces the selfprotection of the skin against stress notably by promoting its moisturizing capacities and by soothing it.

Protection against Premature Skin Aging The mechanism of activity of EpiCalmin TCM was analyzed by DNA microarray technology using normal epidermal keratinocytes. The microarray experiment contained more than 1000 genes which are known to be important markers for the skin. In the analysis, only genes which were highly upregulated or highly downregulated were taken into account for the efficacy evaluation. Most of the up-regulated genes are involved in protec tion against free radicals, oxidative stress and toxic molecules. The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) genes were found to be the most downregulated markers in the assay. MMP enzymes are responsible for the degradation of the extracellular matrix, the cutaneous structure which provides firmness and elasticity to the skin. MMP enzymes are involved in UV-induced breakdown of collagen and elastin and are upregulated in aged skin.

By stimulating the skins defense mechanisms against oxidative stress, inflammation and collagen degradation, EpiCalmin TCM actively prevents premature skin aging.
