Piccadilly Circus Rody and I were sitting with our grandchildren in the M&S caf watching the shoppers below. In Festival Place stood a giant Eiffel Tower under a mobile made up of the letters L.O.V.E., its base hugging a big red heart. It was Valentines Day and a temporary stall was doing a brisk trade, selling gifts for that special person.
This iconic image associated with Paris, the city of romance, reminded me of another image linked with love, the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus. In my youth I spent many a wistful moment sitting at the foot of Eros, watching London pass by in the days when it really was a roundabout. What I didn't know then was that Eros was paid for by public donation and commissioned as a memorial to Lord Shaftesbury, a Victorian philanthropist with a big heart who worked tirelessly for the relief of the poor, the vulnerable and the destitute: He was affectionately called the Poor Mans Earl. He set up 196 charities, some of which continue to this day. When he died thousands of people lined the streets of London as his coffin was carried to Westminster Abbey, from the poor and the lame to the great and the good. Lord Shaftesbury was a Christian who dedicated his life and privileged position to fight for the needy. His aim was to share the love of God which he had received through faith and trust in his Son, Jesus. Ironically those who named his memorial Eros chose the wrong Greek word for love, for the word eros refers to sexual love. The love that Lord Shaftesbury sought to share is best described by the Greek word agape, a love we can neither earn or deserve. The word agape was chosen by the first Christians to describe the love of Christ, an unfair love which loves you in spite of who you are and what you do. Easter is all about this love. How much does God love us? Christs outstretched arms upon the cross say: I love you this much, even those of you who crucify me. Easter Day is a celebration of resurrection joy, of Gods greatest gift to us, forgiveness and new life now and beyond this life. To know your destination is the key to your journey. Christian greetings,

Editorial Easter 2013

The year is flying past and Easter is once more upon us. In this months edition you will find details of Easter services and other special events. I hope that you were able to buy Fair Trade Easter eggs as offered in last months magazine. Most cultures around the world use the egg as a symbol of new life and rebirth. Long hard winters often meant little food, and later Christians abstained from eating meat and eggs. during Lent. They could then be enjoyed again during Easter, and traditionally the shells were decorated with coloured dye. This is still done in some countries, and Mike and I were were given some in Greece when we had the privilege of spending Easter there with our son-in-laws family. For Christians Easter eggs are a symbol of the Good News of Easter. They represent hope and new life, and may also remind us of the stone that was rolled away from the tomb of Jesus. See www.realeasteregg.co.uk for more details. On another topic, many thanks to the children of the Loddon School for helping to deliver Loddon Valley Link (see p. 43). We still urgently need people to deliver in Stratfield Saye. As ever, bouquets, brickbats and other comments on the magazine can be sent to: editor@loddonvalleylink.hampshire.org.uk. And remember - all our magazines can be found online at www.LoddonValleyLink.hampshire.org.uk

TEXT FOR THE MONTH 1 Timothy 1: 6 to 8 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline, so do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord. The NIV Bible Prayer for the Month. Gracious God, we thank you at this time of Lent, for the example you have shown us in Christ. Forgive us that we so rarely follow his example. We turn a blind eye to what we know to be wrong, even bending the rules ourselves. We go along with the crowd rather than face being thought different. We close our eyes and ears to what we would rather not think about. We make excuses for, and seek to justify, our faults. We give way to temptation, promising that next time will be different. We wash our hands of difficult decisions, claiming that it is none of our business. You challenge us to stand up for what is right. Forgive us and renew us through your Spirit, restore us through your love, equip us with your power and so enable us to live faithfully as your people. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

A view from the Borough Council Councillor Ranil Jayawardena

The last month has been very busy at the Borough Council, but I have only got space to cover the two plans here the Council Plan and the Local Plan. The Council Plan is the document that sets out the councils priorities and proposals over the next four years. Amongst other issues, it covers improving economic vitality, creating neighbourhoods where people feel safe, maintaining a reputation for quality arts and leisure, protecting our environment and developing better infrastructure. You can find the full document on my website. As you will see, it is a clear and easy-to-read plan, providing clear direction to Council Officers on the priorities that this Conservative administration has set and offers local residents an accessible view of what the Council will be doing for us all over the next four years. In approving the Council Plan, Council also approved the 2013/14 budget. The approved budget means that the Borough Councils part of the Council Tax will remain frozen for 2013/14 and it is planned for this freeze to continue to the following year. Thatll mean that under this Conservative administration, your Borough Councils tax will not have changed for five years. We recognise that keeping our cost down is of paramount importance to households, when the cost of food, fuel and almost everything else is increasing. On the Local Plan, I say again that I live just up the road in Bramley and I know the issues we face so you can be assured that I am on your side when it comes to controlling development. I want the lowest number of homes possible and continue to fight for this. As you may recall, we previously proposed cutting the number of homes to be built annually from 945 to 594. Weve now been asked to build 730-770. This puts more greenfield sites at risk, so I have been arguing for a reduction. I shall also say this again - I will continue to strive for the lowest number of homes in our area. I have also been arguing that, when the Council Officers proposals on development sites come before the Cabinet, they should consider taking their own approach. I appreciate

Page 24

the comments that a number of residents have provided about the balance and location of homes in our area and the Borough as a whole. I have been able to put these points to my colleague, the Cabinet Member for Planning, who will, Im sure, consider them fully when putting forward his recommendations. Please let me know. As ever, a full update on my work is online (tellRanil.com) and, if I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sherfield Village Hall / Short Mat Bowls

Short Mat Bowling was introduced into The Sherfield Village Hall in 1997 and we are affiliated to the England Short Mat Bowls Association (E.S.M.B.A.). Through the years The Sherfield Village Short Mat Bowls Club, (S.V.S.M.B.C.) have been involved in many leagues and competitions with varying results. They have also run various competitions and friendly matches in the Village Hall. These, although sometimes hard work, are great fun both for our own members and visiting clubs. This 2012-13 season we have entered the 'Thursday Two Triple Short Mat League' in which we currently hold top spot by 18 clear points. Whilst we like to remain competitive, we do not lose sight of the fact that it is a fun game that can be enjoyed no matter what standard you are. To this end we hold a ' Roll Up ' on Friday afternoons where anyone can come along and join in. We really like to see new faces. Contact Norman Stanley (01256) 881021 for more information

Probus Club Is Shouted At

At the first speaker evening meeting of the year, the Probus Club of Basingstoke saw and heard Jonathan Jones giving it loud in his guise of the Town Crier of Farnham. Arrayed in his splendid regalia Jonathan outlined his various roles to the audience. The position of Town Crier goes way back to the Norman Conquest. In those days few people could read and the Town Crier had to impart the latest legislation and news to the populace. The well known opening phrase of Oh yez, oh yez can be traced back to Norman French. The position of the Town Crier of Farnham was resurrected a decade ago when the council set up a competition for the post which carries on honorarium of 500. Having been declared the winner, Jonathan Jones has the security of the position for life or until he resigns. The Town Crier has specific civic duties in supporting the elected council of Farnham including attending the full council meetings fully attired in his uniform. He is also involved in supporting some local commercial activities and charities. He explained that the uniform can be very hot on some occasions especially outside in the summer where he is often mistakenly identified by young children as a pirate. Although he has a tricorn hat he carries a bell rather than a cutlass. At the conclusion of his talk Jonathan Jones gave an example of a shout which clearly demonstrated why he won the competition. The Probus Club of Basingstoke for retired professional and business people has a full diary of events and interested potential members should initially look at their website www.probusbasingstoke.webs.com or ring their secretary Bryan Harvey for an informal chat on 01256 321473.

The Four Horseshoes Reopens

The Four Horseshoes has always played an important part in the life of Sherfield. Dating from the sixteenth century with nineteenth century alterations, it is a timber-framed building with later brick cladding. It was a coaching inn and the adjoining single-storey outbuilding was the stable and coach house. It is a Grade II listed building. Now the Shoes has reopened for business under the new ownership of local man Scott Miles. He has lived in the village all his life and has always played an active role in village life. He spent thirteen years in the motor trade at BMW before successfully branching out on his own for several years. The Four Horseshoes represents a change of direction and a new challenge for Scott, who is keen to secure the pubs future at the heart of the village. The pub is undergoing redecoration and refurbishment but the plan is to remain open during the works.
Page 30

The aim is to serve excellent home cooked food at reasonable prices in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and to make the pub the epitome of a village local. The skittle alley is a popular and versatile venue and skittles with good food and friends is a fun evening. However, the room can also be used for parties, wedding receptions, family gatherings, corporate and social events (or a childrens tea party with a difference?) There is a good sized garden at the rear of the pub and plenty of parking. On the first Tuesday of each month The Shoes plays host to a local jazz band. Scott plans to hold additional events throughout the year. So if you have any ideas on what you would like to see happen at "The Shoes" just let Scott know. In the meantime, he looks forward to welcoming you at The Shoes.

The Lenten Tree

During the Festival of Christmas the Christmas tree was a symbol of the joy we shared together as we celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ, God coming to us in human form. During Lent the same tree will be a symbol of the passion of our Lord, who died on a cross for our sins and who rose again to give us new life, eternal life. At St Leonards each Sunday during Lent, a new symbol will be added to the tree and on Easter morning we ask each member of the congregation to bring a flower and place it upon the tree to remind us of the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Lent 1 - Purse Jesus is betrayed for 30 pieces of silver Lent 2 - Whip Gods Son is flogged as a common criminal Lent 3 - Crown & Robe Jesus is mocked by the soldiers Lent 4 - Bowl & towel Jesus came to serve and be our example Lent 5 - Bread & wine Jesus gave his life for us Palm Sunday - Palm cross Jesus welcomed as a King, crucified as a criminal Easter Day - Flowers The Congregation place flowers upon the tree as a symbol of our Lords resurrection from the dead.

Report by Gill Fearon

NWR recently held their planning meeting for the year and rather than adopt the national theme we decided to ring the changed by choosing our own theme - history. This was inspired by two of our planned activities. One is to hear Sheena Archer speak about the history of Sherfield, centred on her magnificent dolls house which is modelled on Park Corner Cottage as it was in 1901. The second is an evening walk around the village with a 1901 map to see which cottages and houses were there then; we will also investigate the hostelries. This is also a fund-raising event for the Church Fund. To continue our history theme, we are organising a family history evening when some of us will present our own research into our family trees and where our families originated from. We also plan to visit the village of Chawton, near Alton, where Jane Austen lived for some of her life, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice. Our book reading will also be historical Hunting Midnight by Richard Zimler, which is set in Porto, Portugal at the beginning of the 19th century. Our country theme evening is Ireland and we will be celebrating this twice once in April when Bramley NWR have invited us to their evening, and then we will be holding our own in October. Other evenings include the history of underwear, which should be interesting as well as amusing! We will also be discussing amazing women who are around now, debating the future of marriage and deciding which luxury item and book we would take should we be cast away on a desert island. To add to this, we are doing our usual mix of activities an evening ramble, safari supper, play reading, music evening and telephone quiz. Stratfield Turgis Village Social Monday 21 January saw a well-attended village social event in the Jekyll and Hyde. Thanks must go to Wayne and the team for providing some excellent food and to everyone who braved the snow and ice to share in the good company.

At the heart of our community for over 100 years
BARN DANCE
The Village Barn Dance on February 2nd was another sell out and a super evening for all ages. There's nothing like live music and a friendly atmosphere to get things going with a swing and, with an experienced 'caller' to lead the way, even the shyest of people were encouraged to join in and have fun. The event was run as a fundraiser by The Friends of Sherfield Village Hall. With the popularity of this annual winter event the Friends have provisionally organised a Summer Barn Dance for Sat July 13th with a barbecue in the hall garden, weather permitting.

PLEASE HELP THE HALL!

As we announced last month, our Honorary Treasurer will be standing down shortly so we are seeking to fill this position as soon as possible. If you have experience of finance, an interest in community work and would like to help manage a village charity, then please get in touch with us. This voluntary role would involve a few hours a week (flexible and homebased) and attending monthly evening meetings. For details please contact Bruce Jones, Secretary of the Village Hall Management Committee, on 07785 306748 or email: sherfield@hotmail.com

Art classes at Sherfield Park Community Centre and Sherfield Village Hall
Louise Hight will be teaching weekly art classes at Sherfield Hall on Tuesdays and Sherfield Park Community Centre on Wednesdays. She has produced work for the commercial and fine art industries for over 30 years, both as a graphic designer and in fine art and becoming a teacher. She has exhibited and also taught art to adults at Fairfields Art Centre and was Head of Art at Daneshill Preparatory School. She is offering two classes, painting and drawing for adults and an after school kids art club (age 7 to 11). The classes offer a fun, friendly and creative environment. Demonstrations and one to one tuition form the basis for learning techniques and you will then be encouraged to experiment and develop your personal artwork. Loddon Valley Link helps Children with Autism Children with Autism help Loddon Valley Link Loddon School as many of you know is opposite the Sherfield on Loddon Garden centre. This is a residential school for children from 8 to 19 who need 1:1 care all year round. The children have autism, severe learning difficulties and challenging behaviours. Many are at the developmental age of a toddler and they often have communication problems. Some of the older students (with staff) have been delivering the Loddon Link, in our local area. This is a type of work experience for them. This may sound a simple task but consider the many small steps of learning that are taking place. Houses have various types of letter boxes in different positions, through which magazines have to be pushed. We only need one magazine per house so the fellow students have to take note of where their fellow students have delivered. Some houses may have dogs inside which may bark and startle the youngsters. Then there are road safety issues to consider. We are proud that our students have taken on this task and glad to be a beneficial part of the community. A View from the Borough - Councillor Chris Tomblin I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those I have not had the chance to meet, as your local Independent member of the Borough Council. It has been good to meet some of you at the Sherfield events over the last few months. The last month has seen an intense round of meetings at the Borough Council where the Planning and Infrastructure (P&I) committee have been debating the Local Housing Development Plan and the individual sites that have been proposed. I have been representing the wards interests to make sure the committee understand the potential impacts of development on our area and find a long term solution to suit all. Many residents have turned out to meetings and there have been a number of notable speeches made to the committee reflecting on the impact of the proposed developments. Concerns were a serious lack of infrastructure, the overall master planning of how sites affect the villages and each other, and the impact of extra demands on local schools. The general consensus of opinion of members of the P&I committee was that Bramley and Sherfield sites including Redlands, Razor and Cufaude Farms were not suitable for reasons of achievability and access, and also that Redlands would only work if the site around the incinerator was developed. I pointed out (with data) the obvious impact of the incinerator and sewage works on any future residents of this site. The committee challenged the proposed number of 770 houses per annum .They were concerned that developing this side of Basingstoke would further congest the A33 and lead to coalescence of the villages with the urban areas. They also supported the use of a locally developed Neighbourhood Development Plans which would determine where up to 200 houses for Bramley might go. They wanted to make sure that Manydown is developed in the way that was envisaged given that it was purchased for the Boroughs long term housing. It was felt that Manydown should take far more than the 3080 houses suggested and members asked for this to be factored in to the final recommendations. Local Plan delays have been caused by a judicial review over the previous decision of the Conservative administration not to promote Manydown. This has resulted in an increase in the required housing numbers which means more use of our green fields is likely, unless the Cabinet takes the views of the P&I Committee into consideration. (continued on p. 48)
Page 47

As I write this, the comments of the P&I Committee meetings were to be presented to the Council Cabinet with the Planning Portfolio holder Councillor Chris Sherlocks recommendations for a decision but the meeting was postponed to Feb 28th to allow more time to work up the proposal. However, the Planning Officers are recommending the original plan which I believe does not fully reflect the views of members and the public. It is to be hoped that Councillor Sherlock will also consider the conclusions of the P&I Committee which were not fully supportive of the Officers report. The Womens Institute - Reported by Ilene Iles

Approximately 40 Members attended a delicious annual lunch at Basingstoke College of Technology on the second Wednesday in February which was arranged, with her usual efficiency, by Helen Rolton. Most of the members returned to Sherfield Village Hall afterwards for our monthly meeting, chaired by our President, Dee Bulpitt. Support was given for a trip to Oxford in April as our spring outing. Other business matters were discussed and Dee mentioned that she had prepared maps for those visiting the National Needlework Archives on the 20th February. The business meeting closed at 3.50 pm. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 6th MARCH 2013 AT 2 P.M. SPEAKER: Fionna Ghal SUBJECT: Teller of Traditional Tales

Evergreens Club - Reported by May MacQueen

The February meeting should have been our AGM but our chairperson was unable to attend due to a family bereavement. This will now be held at our next meeting in March. The meeting was chaired by our secretary and after the business part of the meeting everyone enjoyed a few games of bingo, followed by tea and biscuits and a raffle. The next meeting on March 4th will be our AGM, followed by a talk from Gerald Merritt from the hospital trust.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

On Monday 18th March our speaker is Peter Barwick. Peter worked for many years in the commercial soft fruit industry and later was head gardener at Blackmoor Nurseries. His talk will be Growing Soft Fruit and will cover soil preparation, plant selection and growing strawberries, raspberries, currants and gooseberries. This is the second time that Peter has talked to our club and he always offers plenty of practical advice. Our April meeting sees us returning to flowers rather than produce with a talk from Brian Fisher on The Use of Climbing Plants in the Garden. Brian has a Wisley Diploma (Hons) Master of Horticulture RHS and has thirty-seven years experience in horticulture. He currently designs and advises on private gardens, and also presents talks on cruise ships. A recognised plants man, he has travelled widely and has discovered many exciting plants and gardens. and now has over 40 titles available for lectures to gardening societies. Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:45pm. For details of arrangements contact Linda on 882341 or Vanessa on 881760
