Abstract

The study is about the level of compliance among women of Brgy. Bagumbayan, Taguig City on breast self-examination. It covers to assess women who are enrolled in family planning program and was able to receive teachings about breast self examination done by the public health workers of the Bagumbayan Health Center. Compliance refers to the regularity of a patients adherence to follow certain things or instructions. The researchers will try to identify if there are any doubts regarding the technique of BSE and their willingness to perform. And, to determine if there are different factors that could affect their compliance in practicing the BSE. The level of compliance will be determined in terms of their knowledge, practice and attitude and how they submit themselves on the practice they should comply. The study serves as a basis for supplemental health education program to improve the womens compliance

on breast self-examination practice, bringing change of ones attitude towards it which can greatly contribute to ones commitment to advocate and battle against breast cancer. Statement of the Problem Specifically, this study sought answer to the following questions: (1) What is the profile of women in Brgy.Bagumbayan, Taguig City in terms of: Age, Civil Status,

Educational Attainment, Occupation, Family Health History and Number of children. (2) What is the level of compliance among women of Brgy. Bagumbayan, Taguig City regarding Breast Self Examination: Knowledge, Practice, and Attitude. (3) Is there any significant relationship on the level of compliance in Breast Self Examination when they are grouped according to age, civil status, occupation, educational attainment, family health history, and number of children? (4)What supplemental health education program can be proposed based from the findings of the study? Methodology In this study, the researchers utilized a Quantitative descriptive co relational type of research. The respondents of the study are the women of Barangay Bagumbayan, Taguig City. Criteria of women to be evaluated and to be surveyed must be: (1)Enrolled on the Family Planning Program of the Bagumbayan Health Center since January to September 2011, (2) Has received teachings on Breast Self- Examination,(3) An active and regular participant in family planning program, and (4) A resident of Barangay Bagumbayan, Taguig City. The total respondents are 100. The sampling technique used was Purposive Sampling Technique. The main instrument used by the

researchers for this study was the survey questionnaire. The researchers formulated a self-made questionnaire. The questionnaire is formulated by the researchers based on their readings of related studies and literature from which this study was conceptualized. Findings The data gathered by the researcher were statistically analyzed leading to the following findings: In terms of the demographic profile of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan, Taguig City: (1) Age - Majority of the women in respondents belonged to an age group of twenty one to twenty five with a percentage of 22% and minimal in the age group of forty one to fifty years with a percentage of 4% (2) Civil Status - Fifty two percent (52%) or more than half of the respondents were married (3) Number of Children Forty four percent (44%) of the respondents had only one child (4) Educational Attainment Thirty six percent (36%) of the respondents were high school graduate. (5) Occupation Seventy percent (70%) of the respondents were unemployed. (6) Family History Eighty five percent (85%) of the respondents had no history of breast cancer in their family. In terms of the level of compliance among women of Brgy. Bagumbayan, Taguig City on Breast Self Examination: (1) Knowledge proper knowledge in performing Breast Self Examination were interpreted as much aware with a mean of 4.32.(2) Practice The mean distribution of the respondents according to their practice was 3.23 which were interpreted as moderate compliance. (3) Attitude Right attitude was interpreted as strongly agree with a mean of 4.52. (4) Level of compliance The average means of all the factors is 4.04 which interpreted as high compliance.

Significant relationship of demographic profile of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan and the level of their compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination: (1) Age The chi-square which were computed with a value of 18.5 were less than the critical value of 29.62 and it shows that there is no significant relationship between the age and the level of compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan. (2) Civil Status The chi-square which were computed with a value of 18.4 were greater than the critical value of 14.68 showing that there is a significant relationship between the civil status and the level of compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan.(3) Number of Children The chisquare which were computed with a value of 18.7 was less than the critical value of 33.20 showing that there is no significant relationship between the number of children and the level of compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan.(4) Educational Attainment - The chi-square which was computed with a value of 7.51 was less than the critical value of 14.68 showing that there is no significant relationship between the educational attainment and the level of compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan. (5) Occupation - The chi-square which was computed with a value of 2.95 was less than the critical value of 14.68 showing that there is no significant relationship between the occupation and the level of compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan. (6) Family History - The chi-square which was computed with a value of 4.11 was less than the critical value of 6.25 showing that there is no significant relationship between the family history and the level of compliance on practicing Breast Self Examination of the women of Brgy. Bagumbayan.

Conclusions In view findings from the data and information presented, the following conclusions arrived at: (1) Out of 100 women respondents in Barangay Bagumbayan: majority belongs to age group of 21-25, married, with one child, highschool graduate, unemployed and with no family history of breast cancer. (2) The respondents were considered more aware on the proper knowledge, moderate compliance on their practice and have the right attitude towards their compliance to breast self-examination. (3) Level of compliance is high in terms of knowledge and attitude on BSE but when it comes to their practice moderate compliance was gained. Majority of the respondents doesnt practice breast self examination religiously. (4) The null hypothesis were rejected. There was a significant relationship on the level of compliance on breast self examination when they were grouped according to their civil status.

Recommendations The following are recommended by the researchers as specifically endorsed to the concerned groups/sectors: (1) The public health workers should always encourage women to practice breast self examination that will serve an early detection to breast cancer. They should keep on educating women to practice breast self examination at least once a month to assess for any changes in their breast. They should also conduct clinical breast self examination to women who noticed changes on their breast. They can utilize the proposed supplemental health education program for continuous provision and monitoring of the compliance of women towards the practice of BSE. (2) The local government should be alert and aware about the increasing numbers of

breast cancer deaths in their area. They should double their effort in supporting their barangay by pushing through, programs that could increase the knowledge and compliance of women for early detection of breast cancer. The governments effort and initiation can tighten the advocacy on breast cancer prevention due to its wide range in morbidity of cancer patients specifically breast cancer in women. (3) The women of Brgy. Bagumbayan should encourage to comply in their practice of breast self examination and to become familiarized with their breast and examine if there are any significant changes. They should also participate in activities that could help them to achieve optimum wellness and for making them self-reliant and productive. (4) The future researcher may found out the importance of this study and it may serve as a motivation or an inspiration to conduct depth studies on breast cancer, its early detection and other relevant issues that strongly concern it. The result of this study served as their baseline information or a reference in the conduct of future research on breast self examination and breast cancer.
