The state-of-the-art Portal is to be hosted at NSDC Internet Data Centre with primary objectives of high availability, scalable, secure,

accessible and manageable system.

Since the Portal delivers critical services, maximizing its availability is one of its main objective.

Multi-Layered Architecture: The portal Application, Database and front end servers are fully independent of each other. Therefore bringing about change in any of the layers doesnt affect the other layers. Hence the architecture facilitates high system availability by adding additional node / module with zero down time.

Clustered Server components: In order to cater to a couple of million users in 10 years and providing simultaneous access, and to deliver meta contents to NSDC website etc multiple server nodes may need to be clustered for processing the user request simultaneously. Also the clustered system ensures the availability of the portal during any node failure. The state-of-the-art load balancing at network level distributes the users request to the cluster nodes to decrease the system response time and increase its availability.

Storage Area Network: To meet the exponential data growth of the portal, all server nodes are equipped with SAN storage system which is accessible through high speed up to 1Gbps Network ensuring that the system is highly scalable in terms of storage to meet additional requirements.

Pre, Post production auditing: The processing of auditing the application

modules of the portal before and after production includes, testing security, performance, usability and accessibility hence ensuring the portals security and performance. Similarly, any new hardware component which needs to be added are also tested and tuned before integrating them in production environment.

Data Backup and Recovery: NSDC portal will have a huge structured central content repository and consists of valuable skilling services and information. Thus securing them from storage/Hardware failure is another core objective of the deployed hosting infrastructure. Moreover during any natural disaster, the Disaster Recovery System has to ensure the portals availability and data security. The portal data is replicated asynchronously over WAN using FC-IP protocol.

Open Source Technology: tTe Portal of India is developed and hosted in open source platform such as Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP, XML and Javascript as much as possible. Hence the system is completely flexible and can be easily configured/upgraded for any additional functionalities.

User Access to the Portal will be through Internet It will go through a firewall (to be specified by allied) There will be a switch (to be specified by allied) There will be a cluster of web servers to service the incoming request and a set of DB cluster servers to manage the acess to the application DB where required.
Infrastructure Sizing for a Data Server (Database Sizing)

The Db Serves will be connected to the SANs Year 1 2 HDD Size on Portal 0.5 TB 2.5 TB

3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

10 TB 30 TB 75 TB 110 TB 130 TB 150 TB 170 TB 200 TB

Growth in hardware size per year The growth will be a simple enhancement in the number of servers across each year in the following ratio Year 2 to Year 1 1.5 times Year 3 to Year 2 2 times Year 4 to Year 3 2.5 times

Year 5 to Year 4 2 times Year 6 to Year 5 2 times Year 7 1.2 times Year 8 1.2 times Year 9 1.2 times Year 10 1.2 times
Hardware Specs for the server Year 1 3 web servers and 3 DB servers with a total of 4000 MB RAM for all put together

Staging Server requirement (Some offline requirements) Simple Server with 4GB RAM and 100 GB or less HDD should be adequate only for offline content Maximum Bandwidth needed for the system.
I year (5500 daily visitors x 12 Page Views x 100 KB) + (5500 file downloads/uploads x 20 MB File Size)] 6600 MB + 110000 MB = 116600 * 1,5 = 175000 MB approx = 175 GB in a day. This can be factored into a per second calculation So the min could be around 100 GB - 300 GB The other years multiply y the same logic.
