Instructional method(s) used in this lesson: The instructional methods that will be utilized for this particular lesson are; reading for understanding and information literacy. Reading for understanding deals with addressing student comprehension and making sure they are able to understand and apply the information that is being taught. Information literacy deals with teaching students key content related terms that will guide their learning and improve comprehension, (ex. Blockade). Lesson Sequence: Hook (How will you get students excited about learning/Introduce students to your objectives?) There will be a starter activity pertaining to a motivational quote. Students will analyze the quote and say how it relates to their lives. Another option is a goal setting activity where students must create action steps to previously determined goals. Direct instruction/Modeling Direct instruction will be implemented through discussion of the handouts. Before and after students read they will have to complete a verbal debrief of the information covered. Students will also be given a historical document to direct their understanding of the materials. Guided practice The read alouds and shared reading portions of the lesson will act on behalf of the guided instruction. Each student can follow along as both and I their classmates read. However, they must follow along because I will call on them at random. Independent practice After the reading concludes each student will be responsible for completing the questions on the handout. I will make it clear that each question must have at least a three sentence response and if they may work with a partner of their choosing. Check(s) for understanding and scaffolding of student learning Understanding will be gauged through learners participation in the class discussion Assessment of/for learning I will collect students answers to the reading handouts and they will receive a grade based upon the accuracy and effort that was implemented in their reading responses. Along with grading their papers I will informally assess students reading abilities during the guided reading portion of the lesson. Closure of the lesson Exit Slip- Write 3 action steps to your previously determined goals Bridge to next lesson This will be the final lesson before summative assessment. The following day students will complete a quiz on the information that has been covered over the last two weeks.
