0 DIFFRENTATION OF FUNCTION File 1: Derivative of Function F(X) = Question: You will plot the graph for power functions f(x) = 4 For each value of n, plot the function f, and its derivatives f in the same graph using GSP. Make a table for f and its derivative f, by using the inductive method, derive the general formula for the derivative of the function f(x) = , n is a positive integer n= 0,1 ,2,3,

Answer: 1. To start, open a new GSP sketchpad. 2. We are going to plot the power funcion f(x) = n=0,1 ,2,3, 4. 3. We will start from n=0. To plot new function, go to tool bar, choose graph and click plot new function. We can also do so by using keyboard instruction Ctrl+G. , where n is a positive integer

Discussion:

By observing all the graphs plotted. The power function f(x) and its derivative function f(x) can be tabulate as follow: General form of n f(x) f(x)= 0 1 2 3 4 0 f(x) f(x) General form of derivative function

Based from table 1, we can observe that each power function with the general form f(x)= where n equal to 0,1,2,3 and 4 formed an identical patern of derivative function.

The value of its power, n will become the derivative function variables of x. while its power will be decreasing by 1. These patterns lead us to formulate a general formula of its derivative function which is f(x) = .
