SERVICES
Saturday 23 March 0830 Morning Prayer 0900 Holy Communion 1300 The Foolishness of God Join us in worship in the style of the Taiz Community to celebrate Passiontide. In this service there will also be the ministry of laying on of hands and anointing. There will be a music rehearsal from 12:30 and a simple lunch will be available following the service. PALM SUNDAY 24 March Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 0800 Holy Communion 1000 Procession of Palms and Choral Eucharist The Service begins at The Castle Keep before the Procession of Palms moves to the Cathedral. Music to include Missa Brevis in D k.174 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart sung by The Cathedral Choir. 1800 Choral Evensong The Service will include the Lay Clerks singing the first part of Thomas Tallis The Lamentations of Jeremiah. Monday 25 March 0800 Holy Communion 0830 Morning Prayer 1400 Spiritual Conversation and Confession - 1530 St Georges Chapel will be set aside for private prayer and reflection. MAUNDY THURSDAY 28 March Do this in remembrance of me. 0830 Morning Prayer 1100 Chrism Eucharist with the Blessing of Oils and Renewal of Commitment to Service The Service will include music by Palestrina and Tallis sung by the Lay Clerks. 1730 Evening Prayer 1800 Choral Eucharist of the Last Supper with the Washing of the Feet, Stripping of the Altar and Watch of the Passion The Service will include music by Dvok, Animuccia, Tallis, Durufl and Cardoso sung by the Girls and Lay Clerks. GOOD FRIDAY 29 March We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. By your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. 1400 The Liturgy of Good Friday After a period of silent witness in the Square outside, the cross is brought into the Cathedral where it remains the focus of this service of prayer and reflection on the Lords Passion. With music to include John Sanders The Reproaches and Toms Luis de Victorias setting of The Passion Gospel sung by The Cathedral Choir. EASTER DAY 31 March* Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, Alleluia! 0700 The Easter Vigil with Baptism and Confirmation We listen first to Old Testament readings telling of Gods plan for creation and redemption. The Easter fire is then lit and the Paschal Candle brought into the Cathedral where the good news of the Resurrection is joyfully proclaimed. Festal Eucharist Music to include Louis Viernes Messe Solennelle sung by The Cathedral Choirs. Festal Evensong Music to include Collegium Regale by Herbert Howells sung by The Cathedral Choirs.

Monday 11 March 1305 Lunchtime Recital Novem Michael Haynes conductor The North Easts newest Chamber Choir formed in Summer 2012 by graduates of The International Centre for Music Studies, Newcastle University. With Lenten choral favourites by Tallis, Byrd, Weelkes, Tomkins, Bruckner and many more. Admission free, with retiring collection. Monday 18 March 1305 Lunchtime Recital Stevie Jackson fiddle Thomas MacMillan guitar Greta Buitkut voice Stevie Jackson is a Choral Scholar at St Nicholas Cathedral and a blossoming fiddle player of the Newcastle University BMus Folk Course. A celebration of traditional music in Europe and Scandinavia. Thomas MacMillan and Greta Buitkut also from Newcastle University will be performing free improvisation derived from the Penguin Book of Caribbean Poetry in English. Their fluid and intelligent style brings to life the words of the poets from a fresh and liberating perspective. Admission free, with retiring collection. Friday 22 March 1930 Music for Passiontide Northumbria University Choir James Norrey conductor Andrew Wyatt organist The Choir of Northumbria University will perform Gabriel Faurs Requiem, Felix Mendelssohns Hear my prayer and Gregorio Allegris Miserere mei, Deus. Admission free, with retiring collection. Monday 25 March 1305 Lunchtime Recital Peter Gilligan jazz pianist and friends Performing light music and classic Jazz. Admission free, with retiring collection.
