Board makes DDA appointments, reappointments

By Jerry LaVaute
Special Writer

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP Susan Ireland, Van Buren Township Downtown Development Authority executive director, received the Board of Trustees unanimous approval to reappoint Pastor Jim Richter and Sophie Zoller to their positions on the townships DDA at their meeting Feb. 19. Ireland, formerly the Township Executive Assistant, said that longtime resident Zoller was among the founding members of the DDA, and that Richter had been on the DDA since 2006. Also appointed to the DDA was Craig Atchinson, the general manager of Atchinson Ford, located on Belleville Road. Ireland recommended that Craig Atchinson replace his father Kurt Atchinson, who asked to step down as a DDA member. As you know, Ireland said, Atchinson Ford

is one of the larger businesses in the DDA district. They live their corporate responsibility with their many selfless actions in promoting and responding to the needs of all our residents especially our children and seniors. Atchinson Ford has been an extremely good (business) to Van Buren Township, Township Supervisor Linda Combs added. Ireland outlined some of the recent projects completed or undertaken by the townships DDA: Construction of Fire Station #2 on Belleville Road. Belleville Road Overlay District. Help in funding a new 800 MHz radio system for township police and fire department personnel. A marketing plan for the township sponsored by the DDA, including a new informational brochure, website development and a township Facebook page.

The Belleville and Ecorse Road Intersection project, and water/sewer infrastructure improvements in the area. Ireland added that the DDA is considering construction of a sidewalk on Belleville Road north of Tyler Road to improve pedestrian safety,. They also approved funding for most of the $327,000 expense for township hall roof repair, and plans to refresh the townships landscaping on Belleville Road. This is a board that is pro-active with a strong emphasis on the vitality and health of Van Buren and its business district. Their enthusiasm is great and their commitment is strong, she said.
