B WISE VINEYARDS
Great wines, not to be missed!
BY MICHELLE J. BAKER
Open daily from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. 9077 Sonoma Highway, Kenwood CA 95452
Easy parking along the side and rear of the building or on the side street (Shaw Avenue)
For as much as the winerys name seems like a play on words, the story of B Wise Vineyards is really about a modest guy with a rather brazen goal - to make world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends from his estate vineyard located on Moon Mountain, high above Sonoma Valley. The modest guy, Brion Wise, has been making wines from his mountain estate since 2002, working quietly and without compromise while perfecting his vineyards, and his craft. Wise is the consummate hands-on vintner, drawing on the wisdom and experience of an all-star team of winemaking consultants, including Mark Herold (of Merus fame) and Massimo Monticelli (of Silver Oak). When it comes around to talking about world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley has never received the same respect as, say, Napa Valley or the Bordeaux region in France. But Brion Wise is quietly, and quite convincingly, leading a movement to put Sonoma Valley on the map of great Cabernet Sauvignon regions. The steep slopes of the 100-acre B Wise estate are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Neighboring world-class vineyards such as Monte Rosso, the B Wise property sits above 1,000 feet elevation and benefits from rocky, red volcanic soils, hot days and cool nights. This is tough land to farm, requiring year-round care by hand to prune, sucker, manage canopies and harvest, in pass after pass through the vineyard and throughout the season. It was pretty hard to get ones hands on the extremely small production

Jazzy Summer Nights
Take one part each Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, mix in a beautiful terrace, the view of a Grand Cru vineyard then stir in great jazz. Add an evening of warm Russian River Valley breezes, a pinch of a magical sunset and the result is the truly amazing Jazzy Summer Nights at Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards. When Sonoma-Cutrer finally opened to the public on July 10th 2010 in their 37th year they wanted to create events and activities that represented the style and quality of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir they produce and celebrate their storied history. The winery is located on 400 gorgeous manicured acres and is ideally suited for live music. The only question was what genre would most appeal to Sonoma-Cutrer aficionados and thier wine club members. When everything was considered it was an easy choice to select jazz. The goal was simple, to bring world class real jazz musicians and bands to the heart of the Russian River Valley to create an unforgettable wine and music experience that cannot be duplicated anywhere. The challenge was to find the right musical combination each year to create 3 different and unique jazz concerts that each delivers the kind of powerful long lasting memories that legends are made of. To accomplish this Sonoma-Cutrer sought the help and guidance of Rob Singleton at KJZY jazz radio in Sonoma County and Bay Area jazz icon Peter Welker. Each brings insights and relationships that help secure the best jazz talent from Northern California and beyond. In addition to great jazz, guests are invited to play croquet on the world class courts located at the winery. Guests can enjoy exquisite food offerings at nominal prices from prominent chefs and restaurants in Sonoma County and of course Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay and Pinot Noir offered by the glass and bottle. In 2013 Jazzy Summer Nights kicks off on June 15th followed by concerts on July 20th and August 10th. All concerts start at 6PM with the terrace opening at 5 p.m. Tickets are $50 each and include a Sonoma-Cutrer Logo wine glass and access to the croquet courts where lessons will be offered by the Sonoma County Croquet Club. Please go to www.sonomacutrer.com and join the Sonoma-Cutter mailing list for more information about performers for each concert as they are announced or call (707) 237-3489 for tickets or more information.

ROMBAUER VINEYARDS
Nine Golds and Double-Golds in the Last Three Months!
BY JOSH STEIN
ROMBAUER VINEYARDS Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 3522 Silverado Trail N, St. Helena CA 94574 (800) 622-2206 | www.rombauer.com
Rombauer Vineyards is one of those wineries everyone knows, if it says Rombauer on a bottle, you can be guaranteed high quality, soulful wines to go with food, bringing enjoyment to all who partake. The Rombauer philosophy is the Joy of Wine crafting releases meant to pair with meals, echoing great-Aunt Irma Rombauers belief that the joy of life is the pursuit of what is best to taste and enjoy. Now at year thirty-three and known for decades as a Napa Valley must visit, its clear to see and taste that theyve found a winning formula. How? By keeping the emphasis on what matters: drinkable wines and an enjoyable experience the food and the people matter most, not the attitude! The proof is the nine gold medals won in the last three months at five different wine events, including the San Francisco Chronicle, American Fine Wine and Hilton Head competitons. The winery itself is on the North-East Silverado Trail, giving a fun drive and showing off glorious views and uncrowded experiences on the road less travelled. The hilltop winery and tasting room, looking out over the heritage Zindandel vineyard visitors drive through along the way, are built over more than a miles worth of caves dug into the hillside. Picnic tables

and a trellised gazebo let you know from the outset what matters most: relaxed enjoyment. Tastings are available daily at three separate tasting bars in the tasting room, as is the self-guided garden tour. Stroll through the more than one hundred plant and flower species and the views of the Mayacamas are photo-worthy, for sure. A flight of classic releases await. The wines are just as much a standout as the views, and fitting in with their ethos, the Rombauers really have thought through the logistics of pairing wine and food, not just in terms of varietals but also in offering multiple bottle sizes, ranging from 375 millimeter half-bottles, to the standard 750 bottle we all know so well, to 1.5-liter magums and even larger formats for occasions requiring something extra special. What awaits are several different Chardonnays, Merlots, Zinfandels, and a range of Cabernets and Cab-based bottlings, including the best of vintage red blend, Le Meilleur du Chai. There are also two terrific sweets, a Zinfandel Port and the Late Harvest Chardonnay known simply and unsurprisingly as Joy. The next generation of Rombauers, siblings Sheana and Koerner III, have stepped into maintaining the winerys way of doing things with aplomb. Lots of winery-only releases await, and visitors in search of the real Napa experience need look no further. Theres a reason the name Rombauer brings such great associations and why theyre winning so many golds still, after three decades; come taste for yourself and find out why youll be glad you did. Enjoy!

Vineyard Tours, Food Pairings Return
BY ALExANDRA CHARSLEY
Open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are very family and dog friendly. 23574 Arnold Drive/Highway 121, Sonoma CA 95476 (707) 934-4090 | meadowcroftwines.com
The Meadowcroft Wines tasting room is located at the gateway to the Sonoma Valley within a unique collection of shops, art galleries, dining, sculpture trails and architectural gardens called Cornerstone Sonoma. The tasting room opened in October of 2010 and has quickly become a hot spot of activity for folks on the way to and from Sonoma. The recently redecorated tasting room is big and bright and on most days the doors are left wide open, welcoming you to a wine country tasting room that is truly more than just a tasting room. Visitors can taste the award-winning wines at the bar or seated at indoor tables or at outdoor patio tables. There is also the new outdoor lavender lounge area complete with comfortable seating, umbrellas and a fire pit. But what people really come to Meadowcroft for is the wine. There are three labels being poured in the Meadowcroft Wines tasting room; Meadowcroft Wines, Thomas Henry Wines and Foyt Family Wines (honoring Indy racing legend A.J. Foyt). Winemaker Tom Meadowcroft crafts his wines from estate and other sustainably farmed vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. His 2008 Meadowcroft estate Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon received a 91 rating in Wine Enthusiast while the Foyt Family Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon just received a Double Gold award at the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition. Known for their special events such as the recently completed Mardi Gras Celebration, the annual Foyt Racing extravaganza and their many songwriter events, the staff at Meadowcroft also enjoys gathering with their wine club members for monthly food and wine events, often served up with their now famous BBQ pizzas with Cajun sausage. The tasting room is gearing up for the spring and summer months
28
when their weekend Vineyard Tours will resume. Tours are available at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday where guests are given a glass of Meadowcroft Pinot Noir and then tour and learn about the vineyard where the fruit was grown. The classic food and wine pairings created by the tasting rooms Chef Darby will return in summer utilizing fresh, locally grown farm-totable ingredients and cheeses procured from throughout Sonoma County. Additionally, cheese and chocolate pairings are available upon request. Also coming up are some new wine releases which has everyone in the tasting room pretty
excited. The mainstay of the Meadowcroft brand is the estate grown Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, which comes from Tom Meadowcrofts own vineyard on the famed Napa mountain. The 2009 vintage is about to be released, and it stands shoulder to shoulder with the previous four awardwinning vintages. And, there is also a new wine ready for release, the 2010 Meadowcroft Oak Knoll Cabernet Sauvignon also from Napa. This is a limited production wine and will probably sell out quickly. So, whether you stop in to enjoy their wines in the tasting room, the patio or even in the gardens, Meadowcroft Wines should be your first stop in Wine Country.

15 Acres of 153-Year-Old Petite Sirah Vines Being Preserved by David Fulton Winery
one vineyard, one Wine, Made Right: david Fulton Winerys Petite sirah.
David Fulton Winery, an historic Petite Sirah producer, is pleased to introduce their 2009 vintage Petite Sirah, from their 153-year-old, dry-farmed, head-pruned, family vineyard. The 2009 has been released only a few months and is already receiving steady acclaim from the three International wine competitions it had been entered: The American Fine Wine Competition held in Boca Raton, FL.; San Francisco Chronicles International Wine Competition and The International Womens Wine Competition held in Santa Rosa, CA. The current release of 2009, though unique by itself, packs the same wallop of earlier ones. Dark, big and massive as you would expect of a David Fulton, you will find with this one that Petite Sirah is not just a name its their plan for the game. Black fruit and cassis on the nose, the flavors of black berries, black pepper, allspice, cloves and creamy sweet oak are a few of the descriptors that come to mind. The mid palate is coating, thick and packed with texture. There is a long finish with a bit more grip than usual. They suggest you can drink now, hold for a year or two, or lay it down for a decade as all viable options. Only 281 cases were produced. In the 2009, growing season, there were considerably less days of frost than in previous years, which lowered to some extent the danger of crop loss. However, late spring rains delayed warm temps until June weather curtailed excessive canopy development. Finally, there were nearly 14 days of 100F temperatures, which brought the overall weather around to a more desirable growing season. We have one vineyard and make just one wine here at David Fulton Winery. Our total production is less than 400 cases a year, says DFWs Stephanie Trotter Zacharia. We sort the clusters by hand before de-stemming then, we hand sort each berry before fermentationWe subscribe to a three-year barrel aging program before each release. The David Fulton Winery 2009 Petite Sirah was grown in the historic St. Helena estate vineyards planted in 1860. David Fulton also built the towns first stone wine cellar under the winery next to it just one year later. He also invented the famous Fulton One Horse Plow. This exact location is where the wine is still being produced today in much the same, old-fashioned way. It is the same location where the current owners offer tastings. The vineyard and winerys current owners are David Fultons greatgrandson, Fulton Mather and his wife, Dink. They pick and sort the grapes each year along with wine club members, friends and family, by hand before fermentation. The fermented grapes skins are then pressed out in a traditional wood basket press, and the wine is aged
for nearly three years in thin-staved French oak barrels. The resulting wine receives consistently high acclaim among their peers and is a favorite referral among Petite Sirah fans. David Fulton Winery & Vineyards is located at 825 Fulton Lane, just four blocks east of Hwy 29, in Napa Valleys historic St. Helena. Visitors are invited to the winery any day by appointment. You should note that the winery doesnt have any commercial signage, so youll have to look for the address (825 Fulton Lane) to enjoy the winerys private setting. For appointments or more infomation, call (707) 967-0719 or go to www.DavidFultonWinery.com. Look for David Fulton Winerty & Vineyards on Facebook and Twitter!

WCtW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. Ho: Cappuccino. Hiking. Bubbles. Brunch! Tasting
an old favorite. Tasting a new favorite. Downtime. Spa. Sunset. Cocktails. Dinner. Taxi. (Plus a craft beer in there somewhere, too). WCtW: What winery do you think has the best over-the-top experience to offer visitors? Ho: For the most part the showstopper is a comprehensive experience offering some combination of beautiful winery, skillful food pairings, talented winemaker, private library tasting and impressive wine portfolio. All these and more contribute to making a brand shine. The factor that really sells it? Authenticity. WCtW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? Ho: For the best wine education first visit an iconic property like Opus One or Grgich Hills, followed up by a small-production winery that offers open-ended experiences. WCtW: Where would you take friends to learn about/taste organic wines? Ho: Envolve Winery, Robert Sinskey and Tres Sabores are each every different but all specialize in organic (and Biodynamic) wine production. WCtW: What areas would you recommend that are not part of the popular wine country? Ho: With exceptional wines from Brown Estate and experiences like the off road vineyard tour at Somerston, the drive to Sage Canyon is especially worth it if you enjoy Zinfandel or Petite Sirah. WCtW: Tell us the best wineries to bring pets. Ho: Bring your pup first to Domaine Chandon or Honig, followed by a must visit to Frenchie Winery and then to PAGE Wine Cellars making time for lunch at Lucy of course.
CM: The perfect day is different for each guest, so as a former San Francisco Chief Concierge who moved here for the wine and stayed for the river and the trees I continually seek the mostmemorable mix Sonoma County has to offer. Begin your day with the popular, hearty breakfast buffet at the Fountaingrove Inn, and then head to Goat Rock State Beach. This State Park is located where the fresh water Russian River meets the salty Pacific, and a brisk-morning visit to this microcosm of life is a must-do. Then, head east to Guerneville for a leisurely stroll through the magnificent giants that encompass Armstrong Woods State Park, an ancient grove of Coastal Redwoods; this is a do-not-miss multisensory experience. Both parks can be enjoyed throughout the year, even in winter! Now, on to Korbel for a fabulous tour and tasting; dont forget to visit their Marketplace, where youll create a picnic delight youll enjoy later! Of course, I base my winery suggestions on varietals sought by my guests, but always recommend a drive to the vintners of scenic Dry Creek and Russian River Appellations. Among my personal favorites are Bella Vineyards (great reds, rustic cave tour, winery artifacts from around the world), Amista (pet-friendly, worldclass wines); VML Winery (gold medal-winning Pinot), Lambert Bridge (enjoy your picnic lunch amid their beautiful gardens with a glass of their finest!) and the casual Kokomo Winery (to-die for Zin and MOST gracious hospitality!). Afterward, enjoy late-afternoon one-of-a-kind shopping in the Victorian town of Healdsburg; end your day with a delicious dinner at our restaurant, Equus, or at the Michelin-rated, small plates gem Willis Wine Bar.
Remember: Please sip responsibly! Plan to taste at no more than three wineries based on these recommendations.

Open Daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 4160 Silverado Trail, Napa CA 94558 USA (707) 252 0781 ext 113 | www.hagafen.com
Hagafen Cellars, located on the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley, welcomes you with open arms to their friendly, warm and down to earth tasting room. Come, sit, relax and sample exceptional wines amongst the outdoor scents of rosemary and citrus, soft sounding wind chimes, and Italian landscaped gardens. Ernie and Irit Weir started Hagafen Cellars in 1979, with their first commercially released vintage in 1980. Over the years, Ernie has perfected the craft of winemaking and plays an active role in every aspect of the business, grape growing to winemaking to marketing the finest wines. Hagafen Cellars has many fine wines from which to choose. They produce 8 to 10 varietals each year and offer 20 distinct wines on their tasting menu, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and White Riesling. They also produce a Brut Cuve sparkling wines as well as a late harvest dessert wine. Their small lot releases start with superb fruit which highlights each of the regions from which grapes are sourced. For this reason, their production is only 8,000 cases, coming from their own 20 acre estate and from other select growers primarily from Napa Valley. As for new releases, Hagafen Cellars is excited to offer their 2007 Napa Valley Brut Cuve Late Disgorged Sparkling wine. This elegant bubbly is full bodied, clean and beautiful just like a star with its soft, slightly rosy, hue and multitude of tiny shining bubbles. Hagafen is also proud of its Estate Bottled 2008 Napa Valley Syrah, produced from their newest vineyard: Weir Family Vineyard III in the Coombsville AVA, along the Eastern foothills of the Valley. This wine opens with a nose that jumps out of the glass with its bright Bing cherry and black pepperiness. Also be sure to taste their newly released 2012 Estate Bottled Napa Valley Coombsville Dry White Riesling, a wine that is sure to please! Tours are offered daily at 11 a.m., by appointment only, except Saturdays and holidays. Hagafen Cellars offers their award winning wines in their tasting room, on-line, in select stores and restaurants, and also through their three distinct exclusive wine clubs: Prix, Hagafen and RS (residual sugar).

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations are not necessary (unless you have a group of 6 or more). Taste their highly acclaimed wines while relaxing with a light picnic at their charming country haven. 2191 Laguna Road, Santa Rosa CA 95401 (707) 823-2404 | www.martinraywinery.com
Martin Ray Winery is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley near Santa Rosa and I think this area has to be one of the areas best kept secrets. This location, while off the beaten path, is easy to get to and allows guests a more intimate wine tasting experience. Escape the crowds and enjoy wine country at its best! Martin Ray Winery is known for crafting consistently good wines at reasonable prices. Their staff loves to gently educate their guests and is knowledgeable about the area, so they can also help you plan your next move. They are situated amongst restaurants and markets and they encourage guests to pack a picnic prior to their visit so they can enjoy the leisurely lifestyle found here. Purchase wines by the glass or the bottle to enjoy at one of their picnic tables or on their spacious lawn surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. Martin Ray Winery is privately owned by Courtney Benham, who acquired the historic Martini & Prati Winery in 2003. Since then, he has been dedicated to maintaining the winerys rich heritage while transforming the space into a state-of-the-art modern winemaking facility. The renovation has been a true labor of love for him. This is the one of Californias oldest continuing wineries, with the tasting room structure dating back to the 1900's. Tucked away with lush landscaping, you will find their newly finished Event Pavilion for use in the near future. By summer, the last phase of modernization should be in place, so they will soon be able to offer tours of the property highlighting the winerys history. Their portfolio is comprised of three different labels so there is a wine suitable for everyones palate. The Martin Ray Wines are produced in a classic European style and will continue to follow this legendary winemakers ideals, the Angeline Wines are fresh, fruit forward wines that are meant for daily enjoyment and the Courtney Benham Wines offer more unusual varietals, while still being produced in the classic European style. Martin Ray Winery is the one of the only wineries in the Russian River Valley that produces reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Diamond Mountain Vineyard and Stags Leap District. Courtney Benham has secured long term contracts with growers so they consistently have access to some of the best grapes in California. They have also established a relationship with Dan Goldfield of Dutton-Goldfield to create small, reserve lots of Pinot Noir for future release.

Visiting Sonoma County is an amazing experience full of historical attractions, fine restaurants and award winning wines. Kenwood Vineyards is a beautiful historic winery that is dedicated to producing premium wines truly representative of the worldclass vineyards found here. Kenwood Vineyards was established in 1970 in the former Pagani Brothers Winery, a historic cellar dating back to 1906. Thoroughly refurbished and modernized, the facility is completely devoted to Kenwood Vineyards small-lot style of winemaking. This style allows their winemaking team to develop each lot of wine to showcase classic character, subtle complexity and superb balance. In addition to the 23 acre estate vineyard surrounding the winery, they also source grapes from dozens of sustainably farmed vineyards in Sonoma Countys best appellations. The harvest from each vineyard is handled separately to preserve its individuality and true character. As a result, every Kenwood Vineyards wine is consistently delicious. The best expression of Sonoma Countys renowned varietals can be found in Kenwoods extensive portfolio. With more than 30 wines across seven series, you are sure to find a favorite. The acclaimed Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon originated in 1978 when Kenwood Vineyards commissioned local artist David Lance Goines to create an original work to grace its first reserve style 1975 Cabernet Sauvignon. The idea was to create an elegant, distinctive package that would showcase the outstanding art. Today, each vintage represents a different work of art, reinforcing the unique character of the collection. Another distinctive favorite among wine enthusiasts is the Jack London Wines. Kenwood Vineyards has the exclusive rights to harvest the historic, lavaterraced vineyards of the famous Jack London Ranch. From these vineyards, award-winning, limited-production wines are produced. The dramatic etched wolfs head logo adorns the label on these wines. Kenwood Vineyards best-selling line of wines is the Sonoma Series. These wines are fruit forward and are meant to be enjoyed daily. With their central wine country location, its easy to discover the rich heritage and exceptional wines of Kenwood Vineyards. Every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., they hold an Art, Food & Wine Experience. Guests will have the opportunity to see original art pieces from the collection that began with the controversial 1975 Naked Lady, by David Lance Goines. Savory appetizers will be paired to bring out the best characteristics of the wine. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling (707) 282-4228. For a more in-depth exploration of their wines, consider a private tasting overlooking the vineyards. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling (707) 282-4228.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

By the early part of March, most all of the mountain vineyards are pruned and ready for the next grapecycle. Burrell School has an amazing 14,200 vines between their two estate properties, and theyve all received a haircut by Februarys finale. Frost-prone areas tend to wait as long as possible to shave their vines, but it gets dicey to wait much past mid-March, as the steady march toward spring is well up to tempo. Dont forget, turn your clocks ahead an hour on March 9 for Daylight Savings Time.
tour of the mountain wineries, so be sure to visit Poetic Cellars if youve not yet been. Head to Shadowbrook on Saturday evening for a special Pinot-themed winemakers dinner with Burrell School, Dancing Creek, Hallcrest and Silver Mountain, among others, paired with the locally-sourced cuisine of Executive Chef, Ashley Hosmer. Shes a Santa Cruz local, so she takes the locovore concept quite seriously.
Poetic Cellars
Katy Lovells new release of Pinot Noir from the Regan Vineyard, 2010, will be featured all month long and youre sure to fall in love. Also new at Poetic Cellars is the stunning Masquerade white blend, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, perfect for spring time sipping. Be sure to try her new 2009 Mourvedre as well: stunning and sensual, a pure red-fruited example of the racy Rhone varietal.
