DENR Tribal Intern


The DENR Tribal Intern position (June-August) will be located at the Native Village of Eyak (NVE) Office in Cordova, Alaska, and field work will occur on the Copper River, Copper River Delta, and Prince William Sound. The Intern will assist DENR staff on a variety of NVE natural resource projects The Intern will assist DENR staff on a variety of NVE natural resource projects, which include Copper River Chinook salmon escapement, Copper River Delta moose studies, marine debris and seabird mortality, alternative energy, and contaminated site remediation. The Intern will develop an individual project to be completed by the end of the internship period and results will be presented at a professional/public forum. The incumbent performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures, and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments. Team: DENR Reports to: Tribal Biologist Salary Status: Non Exempt from Overtime Salary range: $11.00-$12.00 ph Schedule: Seasonal, full-time

Responsibilities/Duties: Expedite fisheries research camp supplies Provide some overnight labor support for fisheries research camp activities Provide logistic and expeditor services for various DENR projects Develop independent research project relevant to current DENR program Present at Intern Day in Anchorage Other duties as assigned. Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Must have the ability to take direction and carry out tasks given by Tribal Biologist and work in a team environment. Knowledge of outdoor survival skills. Ability to work on computers and input data. Enthusiasm, positive outlook and interest in environmental science. Skills in operation small boats and basic maintenance. Ability to live and work harmoniously in a tobacco/drug/alcohol-free environment . Knowledge of Prince William Sound Culture. Experience Requirement: (preferred) Experience working on/with boats, subsistence fishing, solar or wind renewable energy projects. Experience in basic office skills. Experience with operating small boats, particularly in swift river water Education Requirements: Must be minimum of 18 years of age, possess valid Alaska Drivers license.

Performance standard Physical ability to work long hours outdoors. The position requires that applicants are in sufficient condition to perform physically demanding tasks. The use of hand, eye and muscle coordination to safely operate boats, Automobiles, power tools and hand tools is required. Ability to sit for long periods of time, read monitor screens and fine motor skills to input data. Environmental Factors Work will be split between in and out of doors. Typical hazards of indoor office atmosphere including copy machines. The position poses significant risk of encountering inclement/cold weather and dangerous wildlife. Possibility of remote/cold water survival situations. This position entails risks of injury from using power tools and operating small boats on swift water as well as normal risks of physical labor done in the outdoors.
