(Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1986. This film is based on a novel by Umberto Eco)
Devout (/divaut/) Christians would undertake long pilgrimages in order to visit and venerate the relics of saints and martyrs. People travelled widely to visit these monasteries and see relics because they believed them to have curative powers. The large numbers of travellers created standard routes from one monastery to another: Pilgrimage Roads became routes of trade as well as travel like Iacobus Way, in the north of Spain. In time these monasteries became economic, social and cultural centres. The film stars with Sean Connery and Christian Slater, as William of Baskerville and Adso of Melk, respectively, as in the 14th century Franciscan friars who arrive at a Benedictine abbey in the north of Italy, which is being haunted by several unexplained deaths. The central plot (argument) of the film revolves around Williams use of reason to act as a Sherlock Holmes, with Adso as a kind of Dr. Watson, narrating as a detective story. William of Baskerville acted according to logic and deduction following the Aristotelic philosophy. The two main characters try to solve the murders connected to a mysterious book written by Aristotle, The book of laughter. Lets do a drawing called: PARTS OF A MONASTERY/ AN ABBEY:
