UNIT 8: FEUDAL EUROPE (Social Sciences Deparment) THE FILM/MOVIE : THE NAME OF THE ROSE

(Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1986. This film is based on a novel by Umberto Eco)

Have you ever visited a monastery?

In the Middle Ages there were two types of clergy: 1) Secular clergy: They were priests and their bishops, they lived in villages and towns. 2) Regular clergy: They were monks and abbots, and also nuns and abbesses, they lived in countries and rural sites). The monks lived in monasteries and had a communal life. There were different orders (Benedictines, Cistercians, Dominicans, Franciscans) that followed different rules. For instance, The Dominicans were entrusted (to be encharge of) of The Holy Inquisition, indeed the word Dominicans come from a Latin expression and it is means: Domini Canes (translation in Spanish: los perros/guardianes de Dios). They were the guardians of the Church and its doctrine against heresy. Their lifestyle or way of life was summed up in the Latin phrase ora et labora, whose meaning is a life dedicated to prayer and work.

Devout (/divaut/) Christians would undertake long pilgrimages in order to visit and venerate the relics of saints and martyrs. People travelled widely to visit these monasteries and see relics because they believed them to have curative powers. The large numbers of travellers created standard routes from one monastery to another: Pilgrimage Roads became routes of trade as well as travel like Iacobus Way, in the north of Spain. In time these monasteries became economic, social and cultural centres. The film stars with Sean Connery and Christian Slater, as William of Baskerville and Adso of Melk, respectively, as in the 14th century Franciscan friars who arrive at a Benedictine abbey in the north of Italy, which is being haunted by several unexplained deaths. The central plot (argument) of the film revolves around Williams use of reason to act as a Sherlock Holmes, with Adso as a kind of Dr. Watson, narrating as a detective story. William of Baskerville acted according to logic and deduction following the Aristotelic philosophy. The two main characters try to solve the murders connected to a mysterious book written by Aristotle, The book of laughter. Lets do a drawing called: PARTS OF A MONASTERY/ AN ABBEY:
