NEWSLETTER OF VENTANA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

If youve been to campus recently, you may have seen the new fence being put up along the lower field off the parking lot. This is part of the new security measures MARCH 23, 2012 coming to our school. Other features will include enclosing the MPR patio with perimeter fencing, and reconfiguring gates around school to close automatically. In addition, the school entrance will be redesigned. An additional doorway will be added, in a way that requires visitors to pass through the office before entering the campus. As you can see, this work is already underway, and we hope to have it all , 2010 completed before school resumes in August. Thanks to the generous support of our FFO, another exciting facility improvement coming over Spring Break will be the installation of a shade structure over the K/1 playground. Thank you, FFO! Looking for ways to enhance your childs cultural competence? CFSD Community Schools is offering an exciting new 4th quarter enrichment class, Explore China! The class will take place on Tuesdays from 1:35-3:00, and will be taught by Mr. Jing Ma (CFHS Chinese teacher). The course was originally advertised as K-2, APRIL 24, 2009 but it is now open to K-5 students. Here is the course title and description: Gain an introduction to the beautiful language of Mandarin Chinese and investigate , 2008 some of the cultural practices and perspectives of ancient and modern China. Students will learn basic Chinese expressions and explore Chinese customs, music, , dance, art, cuisine, calligraphy, history, sports, and leisure time activities. The course will be conducted both in English and Chinese so students of all proficiency levels are welcome to enroll. Campus Security Do Your Part! Parents, please join the faculty and staff of Ventana Vista in keeping the campus safe and secure. If you are coming onto campus during school hours, for any reason, please sign in at the office and get your visitor sticker. Do not attempt to bypass the office by going through the MPR or through any gates. This is strictly prohibited! Also, if you observe someone on campus that does not have a visitor sticker or a district badge, please ask them to return to the office to obtain one. Your cooperation is very much appreciated!

Important Reminder Resident Registration Forms SY13-14 Parents, the registration forms for next school year were mailed from the District Office in January. The return date on them was February 15, 2013, which has passed. It is extrememly important that these be returned AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to the front office. The district will now begin to make decisions regarding Open Enrollment, based on our registration numbers. If you have any questions, please call the front office at 209-8000.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 5th GRADE STUDENTS Please mark your calendars for 5th grade Open House at Esperero Canyon Middle School. Come and meet the faculty, see students in action in various classes, learn about the extra curricular offerings, and get answers to questions you have about middle school life. The date is MONDAY, APRIL 29th, FROM 6:00 PM UNTIL 7:30 PM. Future students are welcome to attend with their parents. If you come 15 minutes early, there will be a panel of current 6th graders to answer questions from students points of view.

Spring Administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test In accordance with state requirements, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is offered at different times during the year. The Spring administration of the CogAT will be during the week of April 8th (see below for actual times and locations). Parents of Kindergarten and 1st Grade students may request testing at this time. It is recommended that parents of primary students consult with the classroom teacher and/or gifted specialist before requesting testing. Cognitive testing is NOT required for the identification of primary students for differentiated or extended groups in math and/or reading in the primary grades. Requests for testing must be made in writing by Thursday, March 28, 2013. Forms are available in the school office. Testing times for Ventana Vista will be Wednesday and Friday, April 10 and 12, 2013, beginning promptly at 7:15 a.m. in Mrs. Coopers room. Students must be present both days of testing.

Language Immersion in CFSD

In CFSD, we believe in developing all students cultural competence. World Language instruction is part of our core curriculum. At the elementary level, students either participate in our K-5 Spanish program (taught by a specialist for 120 min./wk.) OR in one of our Language Immersion programs.

Spanish Immersion

Mandarin Immersion

starting in 2013 Gr. K-1 for 2013-14 Open to K-1 students

The overall goals of our Language Immersion programs are for students to: meet or exceed academic achievement levels in all areas of the district curriculum; acquire a high level of communicative and academic prociency in English and the target language (Spanish or Mandarin); gain an appreciation of other cultures and a deeper understanding of their own culture; and increase capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Lunch Money Accounts

As the end of the school year is getting closer, if you will be leaving the school district at the end of this school year, it would be very helpful if you could use the money you have left on your lunch account before May 21, 2013. For seniors, we will not be accepting any more pre-payments as of April 12th, and we would appreciate it if you could use your lunch money before you graduate. If you feel that you will not have enough money to last until the end of the school year, please do not replenish your account, but pay with cash instead. Raise money for your club, family, athletic team or other organization by buying space at the annual Band Booster Yard Sale! You keep all the money you raise! We hope you will join us for what will be a fun way to clean out your closets and raise money. The Arizona Crush is a Tucson-Based, Elite Level A.A.U. Club Basketball Club that competes in Tournaments against other elite talent all over Arizona and the Southwest. We are holding an open tryout for our third and fourth grade club team to discover young talent in the Tucson area.
