************************************************************ January-March 2013 Matthew Stahl, Acting Editor ************************************************************ FROM THE RETURNING COMMANDER Dear Comrades: Well,

I am officially back in as Commander of Rusy-Bohm Post 411 through the current 2013 term. It turned out that we did not leave town as soon as expected and will be here through May or June. Since I have been fulfilling the role of Acting Commander until departure, it made sense to accept the formal nomination for the year. These past three months have been very busy, as they are every year. We had the Law & Order dinner in November. We were able to honor one firefighter, Jared Gunst, and one police officer, Keith Vilano, as well as three students who won Boys & Girls State scholarships -- Ian Berry, Charles Larosa and Jacqueline Croteau. We also presented a certificate of appreciation to Jonathan Gunther for the extraordinary job hes been doing refitting our attic space as part of his Eagle Scout project. We hosted the Veterans Day ceremony for the Town of Islip on November 11. Kristen Knobloch filled in for Leslie Kane as singer and we had local high school buglers and members of the Marine Corps League in the honor guard. As always, it was a very moving experience. Separately, our Third Commander, Jim Duffy, coordinated with the high school for several of our veterans to speak with students about their experiences in military service. This is one of the most important things we can do for our community. Since the draft ended in 1973, there are several generations of families whove had no first-hand association with the military. It is imperative that we share our stories of self-sacrifice and service to the nation with todays children. On November 17, the VSO for the Town of Islip held a special flag retirement ceremony out at Calverton National Cemetery. There were hundreds of worn flags brought in by several different veterans organizations that had no way to properly dispose of them. The event was so successful that the VSO now plans to host such events on a quarterly basis. We held our annual Thanksgiving dinner November 15. Willie Affelt whipped up a delightful meal of turkey with all the trimmings. Special thanks to everyone who made the day go well Gus & Krista Luhrs for the decorations; Melody Thomas, Barbara Chiesa and Bob Cummings for donating turkeys; all the members who set up and took down everything, served the meal and worked in the kitchen. You ALL made the affair a great one! The Posts Christmas party took place on Saturday, December 1. The Ladies Auxiliary sponsored a Chinese auction with great prizes for all participants. Willie again prepared an excellent selection of foods for everyone. Kudos to those who helped make things super that day as well. Hurricane Sandy devastated Long Island in November. We opened the Post as an Emergency Warming Center for residents in the area from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day. Post 411 provided breakfast and lunch meals, set up charging stations for cell phones and other electronics, offered games and books as activities and handed out items donated for hurricane relief victims. Special thanks to Paul Thomas and Peter Palagonia for giving their time to cook and serve food and for the dozens of volunteers who turned out to help.

Additionally, we continued to offer Night at the Races on the second Friday of each month and Breakfast on the last Sunday of each month. Attendance has remained low for these events recently. We really need members to support both or they will have to stop due to lack of interest. If you want to keep them going, please come out and participate. We saw the VA Satellite Clinic leave after many years at the Post. A new building opened at 132 Main Street in Bay Shore that houses both VA staff and medical personnel from the LIJ hospital system. A grant given to Suffolk County will help ensure that our returning servicemen and women receive outstanding support for their mental and physical well-being. The next big event upcoming is the Past Post Commanders dinner at 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 20th. The event is free to paid-up members and guests, $10 to non-members. You must register for the dinner so we know how many meals to prepare. Please call either the Commander or the Adjutant to say you are coming. It is a full uniform event and gives us an opportunity to remember the men who have commanded our Post since its beginnings in 1917. Please be sure to turn out and let our commanders know we appreciate their efforts. Melody C. Thomas Commander CHAPLAINS CORNER The following Legionnaires were called home by the Supreme Commander of us all: THOMAS ANLEY VISKOVICH (7 SEP 1929 to 26 NOV 2012) Tom served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from March 1951 to February 1953 as an infantryman. He was very active in the Legion, helping out in a variety of volunteer activities. He was also our Sergeant-at-Arms for several years until his health forced him to resign the post. His remains were interred at Calverton National Cemetery. THOMAS STEPHEN WSYSOCKI (19 OCT 1940 to 31 OCT 2012) Tom served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Field Radio Repairman and was mobilized for active duty service from 10 Jan 1960 to 9 JUL 1960 and again from 15 OCT 1961 to 5 AUG 1962. He completed his reserve obligation on 18 NOV 1965. Tom was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram. Several of our Legionnaires have also been suffering recent illness or injury. Please keep them and their families in your prayers: Bill Muller, Vincent Rizzo, Dan Shannon, James Kindberg, Ruth Turzyn, Alex Valdez, George Voehl, Ed Wray and Al Consiglio. As a standard reminder, be sure your family and friends know where your military papers can be found and what your final wishes are. Keep important personal and financial documents available and easily accessible for your family. Remember, we cannot hold a Legion service unless your family asks for one. AN IMPORTANT REMINDER This years Four Chaplains Service will be held in Patchogue at the Temple Beth El and performed on Super Bowl Sunday morning. This will mark the FIRST time the affair is held locally in a Jewish place of worship, making it important that Legionnaires and service vets of all stripes turn out. Please, please, please try to carve out time to be there for this unique and moving ceremony. Details have been posted. Marshall Ketcham Chaplain

REPORT OF THE FIRST VICE COMMANDER At last reported count, our First VC tallied a renewal membership of 144. Though we remain short of our annual goal of 160, were ahead of schedule on the annual county recruiting calendar. Lets keep that up so we make our mark by spring deadline. Talk us up and keep a membership application in your pocket. For Bert Haug First Vice Commander REPORT OF THE THIRD VICE COMMANDER It was a busy season for our Americanism representative. He was out front near full-time discharging his duties, first and foremost as emcee for Novembers Law and Order Dinner. Jim was instrumental in bringing together another packed-house affair comprised of veterans, first responders, legislative officials and community groups. Post 411 honored a Police Officer who charged into the site of a building explosion, a fireman whose quick action saved the lives of several cardiac arrest and accident victims along with several exemplary members of the Boy Scouts and schools. All were presented with fitting plaques and certificates. As an organizer and participant in our Islip High School Veterans Day chats, Jim and several 411 compatriots had opportunity to recount their service experiences in an open classroom setting that hopefully left (positive) marks on the audience. Jims strong conviction to the causes of freedom, patriotism and democracy was on display when he unilaterally assumed a County-level lead advocates position in planned pickets to support Marine Corporal Jon Hammar, at the time wrongfully and cruelly detained by Mexican authorities. The effort thankfully proved unnecessary. I for one like to think his timely release just before the protest was due in part to the fact that they heard the Big D was coming to speak his piece. For James Duffy Third Vice Commander SERVICE OFFICE ALERT In case you havent heard, Veterans who live in Suffolk County can now ride Suffolk County buses for $.75 rather than the regular fare of $1.50. The new resolution sponsored by Legislator Tom Muratore went into effect this past fall. The reduced fare will remain in effect for a period of one year, during which time the Department of Public Works will study the effects of the cost reduction as well as the number of Veterans that ride buses. Veterans will be asked to show proof of status and that they live in Suffolk County. A VA card, Suffolk County Veterans ID card or DD214 will be accepted. Please call Legislator Muratore's office at 631854-9292 for more information. Details on a local 12% dry cleaning discount secured by Bob Romano are also up on the bulletin board. REPORT OF THE BUDGET DIRECTOR Were in between grant cycles at the moment. The promise of aid promoted with great fanfare by Congressman Steve Israel and former Councilman Gene Parrington in prior election cycles disappointedly never materialized, state aid is off the table for now and much remains uncertain as respects the continued availability of grant money at the County and Town level this year given tight fiscal situations. We can only hope were not forgotten, but are fortunate to at least have friends in County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Town Councilman John Cochrane speaking for our interests. REPORT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Our Board boys and worker bees have been hard at it, banging, drilling and painting away to keep the old Post home in good working order. Heres a smattering of projects and chores carried out this past quarter. Theres a handsome new bunch of built-in cabinets on the lower level that have securely swallowed up much of the detritus formerly tossed on shelves of the curtain closet. More cabinets went into the main level maintenance room. A new washing machine, generously donated by Pete Militello, has been installed to help us keep things clean and save on replacement costs. Were pleased to report that the basement stayed high and dry during the severe November storm blitzes, so last summers window fixes proved both well-constructed and timely. As a group the maintenance crew also changed 10,545 light bulbs (give or take 10,000) and struck a long list of miscellaneous items from the maintenance board. We installed vents, hung shelves, painted rooms, cleaned display cabinets, blew out sprinkler lines, stripped floors and fixed broken switches and ballasts. Thanks to all for coming out and lending a hand. You really earned your coffee and rolls. Stay tuned for news of a planned paint party that well be organizing in the spring. For Donald Timmony Chairman, Board of Directors (Outgoing) REPORT OF THE ADJUTANT Weve all been pretty well engaged this past quarter and that holds true for your Adjutant as well. I had the distinct pleasure of working in our attic with Jonathan Gunther and the Boy Scouts of Troop 370 over several months during the fall on an Eagle Scout project that Scoutmaster Mike Gunther describes as far more extensive in scope than most. The effort involved planning, fundraising, budgeting, materials acquisition and lots of good old fashioned building. Together, we took an open space and skinned it out, sealed things up to the elements and built a locker that will be dedicated to the storage of worn flags until they can be properly retired. A couple tweaks and dressings remain, but things are looking pretty good upstairs. The boys certainly worked hard and learned a lot about carpentry, tool use and workplace safety. I can say with certainty that they all walked away knowing a lot more than just which end of a hammer drives in nails. As a capstone to the Post plaque we presented him at the Law and Order dinner, I was also asked to prepare a formal letter recommending Jonathan for his Eagle placement, one that would come with the special recognition of having been earned in the 100th year since the rank was established. It practically wrote itself, and I look forward to writing more after Jonathan achieves this milestone, starting out with one nominating him for a Legion Eagle Scout of the Year award. I have full confidence that this fine young man will go on to achieve his future goals of becoming a US Marine and law enforcement officer. While on the subject of 100 year milestones, were finally just one easy document submission away from receiving our full complement of building certifications. For the first time since 1932, when the Legion first took possession of the place, well be able to use it with all paperwork in place. Aide to Town Councilman Cochrane and Auxiliary member Marlene Johnstone helped us secure a 50% discount on our application fee. With help from Mike Yacubich at B&B Tax Service in East Islip and Sergeant-at-Arms Bob Romano, just about all of our historical financial filings and ceremonial gear inventories have also been restored to proper order. These were both time-consuming projects, but very necessary and worthwhile from an official recordkeeping standpoint.

Where we continue to tread water is in the area of finance. With prospects for substantive outside grant assistance dim and rentals continuing slow, we have to look more to ourselves in efforts to keep the lights on. One such venture was undertaken this past fall in the form of a scratch-off fundraiser. A hall rental was offered as the grand prize and ultimately won by Linda McBride of Brightwaters at the last breakfast on a ticket sold by George Stahl. Im pleased to report that the raffle proved successful, netting twice what we would have earned from a direct rental and returning better results than our previous town-wide solicitation mailing. I very much want to personally thank those besides myself who participated in the scratch-off campaign, a number of whom made generous personal contributions as part of the effort. A tip of the hat goes out to: Melody Thomas, Bob Romano, Willie Affelt, Gus Luhrs, Dominic DeLuca, Jim and Regina Duffy, Joan and Frank Smith, Don Timmony, Ed Miller, Dom and Paulette DeCrescenzo, Bill Hynes, Pete Militello, Vincent Mirando, Jim White, Fred Algigi, Don Schaffer, Jack Daniels, Charlie Brabant, George Stahl, Hans Pietsch and Olga Murray Id note that we achieved this success with only four people reaching the targeted financial goal and a disappointing 1/3 of the Post engaging in fundraising at all, even though time was extended due to hurricane Sandy and almost everyone accepted the T-shirts offered as free-of-charge incentives. A little shaming is in order. Had everyone helped, we could have closed our year-to-date budget gap and fully funded needed capital improvements without dipping into our treasury at all. Revenue has to be brought into line with costs soon, and there are vital infrastructure, program and communications improvements that MUST be made if we are to revitalize this Post in service to ourselves, the community and fellow vets. If we, as a group, cant do better in something this simple, those who didnt pitch in shouldnt be surprised or complain when prices rise, services are eliminated and overhead fees and costs are summarily cut. Talk about reluctant warriors. It took me just half a day walking the neighborhood to raise the bulk of my $225 in collections from total strangers, and just 10 minutes to sell ten tickets during party hall setups. Not one person refused a contribution, because ours is a cause that people support. All I had to do was politely ask. If you havent returned unused books to me yet, please do so, so I can at least attempt to obtain credit for them. Given that this test of the party raffle concept proved successful even with limited participation, it will warrant a second shot down the road. Ive come up with a variation that should eliminate most underlying costs, make collections even easier to solicit and substantially reduce the amount we would ask each member to raise. Well try that out later this year. I also have proposals to raise funds through scrap wire collections, advertising and daytime exhibitions. I must tell you that these will be the last initiatives I put forward, organize and put time into without a stronger measure of collective support. I cant and wont carry all the weight myself. If you have ideas or alternatives to offer, please put them on the table now. Im all ears. More encouragingly, youll note that a LOT of vacancies that have regularly been appearing in the Officer help wanted section of the Bombshell have disappeared this edition. Weve been fortunate to at last see a newer generation of veterans join our Post this past year, have them get progressively more involved, and now start taking on a few important functions. We welcome Al Cerino to the Service Officers slot, Roby Johnson to Homeland Security and Ed Miller to Treasury. Its hard to fit out a Post properly and keep things humming without manning in these particular billets. Hats off as well to John Diaz, himself a newer member who has stepped in, stepped up and now assumed the Chairmans title on our Board, Bob Romano, whos been quick to help out all around and is doing some fine work as our Sergeant-at-Arms, and Melody Thomas for charging boldly back into the command chair. REPORT OF THE AUXILIARY I hope you all are coping with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy which affected so many of us. Many lost much, but we also saw the best come out in people. Friends, family, neighbors and even strangers rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help. Our Ladies clocked more than 500 hours helping those in need, working the warming center set up at the Post, donating food, clothing and just about every item you can think of. Some hosted families, giving them warm places to stay and food. Others used their vehicles to pick up donated items and transport them to those in need. Many went directly to families that were hurting and gave them hot meals, money and an extra pair of hands. We can all be very proud of the effort put forth. Lets welcome our newest members to the unit, Joan Daniels, Alana Murray, Bridget Murray and Marlene Johnston. These ladies, along with Jacqueline Valentino and Paulette DeCrescenzo will be initiated at our initiation ceremony this spring. We look forward to working side-by-side with them. Now that winter is here, it is time to concentrate on helping all those in the local community who are in need of warm clothing, food and shelter. Our Empire Girls State Program is under way; we requested that Islip and East Islip Schools each send us candidates for the 2013 program. We again this year held an annual holiday fundraiser to offset costs related to the program. The gifts were awesome. Take a look at the list of merchants below who kindly contributed. Please consider them when you shop or dine, at which time you can thank them yourself: Oakdale: Oakdale Liquors --- Bay Shore: Clearwater Grill, Molly Mallones , The Chowder Bar --- West Sayville: Mammas Restaurant --- Islip Terrace: Francescos Pizza --- East Islip: Stanleys Bakery, Shannon Court, Jackson Hole, The Irish Coffee Pub --- Islip: Mulberry Street, Veraces, Tellers, Maxwells, Poppys, Oconee East Diner, Balcony Art Antiques Our annual Holiday get together was held at Peggy Parrys this year, and she didnt disappoint. Many, many hours were spent that night enjoying the food and great conversation. The house was full of laughter as we ate and talked, played games and ate some more! It was a great way to usher in the Holiday Season. I must admit our team plays as hard as they work. We are in the midst of sending more packages over to the Middle East. If you have any items you want to donate, please call Gail Barry, chairman of VA&R @277 9236 and we will be glad to send them along. There are still many troops over there and we want them to know we support them. We also make a trip monthly to the Stony Brook VA home, where we help with Bingo. The Bingos are usually held the first Friday each month. We can arrange car pools and usually do. Our Americanism Chairman, Olga Murray, is working hard to educate the community and is encouraging everyone to fly American flags. If you know someone that has a worn flag, or wants one, you can get one right at Rusy-Bohm Post, where they keep a supply. Is there a birthday or Anniversary or belated holiday gift you might need? Consider an American flag. Olga, along with several members, spent a day this past fall at the Islip Town street fair, where we passed small ones out, distributed applications for voting, and accepted donations on behalf of veterans. Olga also spoke for the Auxiliary on Veterans Day. She talked about Veterans and those who couldnt be with us because they are still fighting around the world and cant be home with their loved ones. Keeping that in mind, Memorial Day and Poppy distribution season is sneaking up. This is the biggest activity our unit takes part in. Please talk up the importance of the poppy. Many activities and programs we engage in depend on donations taken in while distributing Poppies. That said, let me wish all good health and prosperity in 2013. 2013 Ladies Auxiliary Meeting Schedule January 28, March 25 - 1st Nominations, May 27 - 2nd Slate & Elections, June 24, July 22 Executive Meeting Joan Smith & Regina Duffy Ladies Auxiliary Co-Presidents

Other areas where help is needed and ALWAYS appreciated: Work crew on Tuesday mornings Cashiers and Dining Room Attendants at Sunday Breakfasts Set up and break down help at events like Night at the Races, Sunday breakfast, dinners, etc. Cooking in the kitchen for Sunday Breakfasts, Night at the Races and special events. Look Again A couple of senior Legionnaires were manning stools and conversing in the Post Lounge. One turns to the other and says, Just look at those two sad and worn out guys across the bar. I really hope we dont end up looking like them in 10 years. His comrade glanced over and then commented, You really should have your eyes checked, my friend. Thats a mirror! Top Boast While passing time in the Veteran's hall, a trio of old-timers started bragging about their ancestors. At age 13, my great grandfather was a drummer boy at the Battle of Shiloh! claimed the first. Mine, boasted the second vet, went down with Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Vet number three upped the ante when he jumped in. My great grandfather was just an Army chef, but if he were living, hed most certainly be one of the most famous military men in the world. Why? What'd he do? his friends wanted to know. Nothing much, was the response, but just being around would make him 165 years old! Recipe for an Efficient Post Take one Post, add a good Commander and accurate Treasurer. Mix well with select portions of helping hands. Fold in a generous amount of congeniality, dashes of wit and humor, two ounces of courtesy and a big handful of respect. Sweeten with equal parts cheerfulness, kindness and charitable thoughts. Work together well, and dont forget a measure of patience while everything in the pot simmers. Keep mixture at even temperature. As a final touch, sprinkle generously with can-do attitude. The end results will make every Post chef proud. Submitted by Bert Haug
