THE KIND-HEARTED WOODPECKER Mr Woodpecker was flying to another forest.

He had to move to another place the forest where he used to live had been cleared. The people wanted to because build houses there. Finally, Mr Woodpecker found a huge tree. He felt that it was a suitable place to build his new home. It was almost dark when Mr Woodpecker began to make a hole in the tree trunk as a shelter for himself. Suddenly, Mr Woodpecker heard a shrill voice. Excuse me, Mr Woodpecker ! Can you please keep quiet ? Im trying to sleep ! said a squirrel. Oh dear, Im so sorry for disturbing you, said Mr Woodpecker. He immediately stopped pecking at the tree. That night, Mr Woodpecker slept in the open. Although he was very cold, he was patient. I mustnt disturb my neighbours, he thought to himself. I can always build my home in the morning. The next day, Mr Woodpecker began again to make a hole to build his home. Tuk! Tuk! Tuk! The sound of Mr Woodpeckers beak pecking at the tree trunk could be clearly heard. Mr Squirrel, who lived in the tree next to the one that Mr. Woodpecker was working on, was unhappy with the loud noise. Mr Woodpecker ! If you must peck wood, will you please go and peck in some other place ? he asked angrily. Stop making so much noise here! Mr Woodpecker did not reply, but he kept on pecking. Come on, Mr Squirrel, Mr Woodpecker is our new neighbour and he is just building himself a home, said a bear from under the tree. Mr Bear is right, added Mr Mousedeer who was also under the tree. we shouldnt be so quarrelsome. Mr Squirrel was not at all satisfied. He stomped out of his nest to look for food. All the other animals in the forest also went about looking for food as usual. While Mr Squirrel was out, a snake slithered up the tree into his nest. Me Snake hoped to have baby squirrel for breakfast. Luckily, Mr Squirrel had no children. However, he did have a lot of food stored in his nest. The greedy snake ate up all of Mr Squirrels food.

When Mr Squirrel came home, he was furious to find all his food gone. He immediately suspected that Mr Woodpecker was the culprit. He accused Mr Woodpecker of stealing all his food, and went around the whole forest telling everyone that Mr Woodpecker was a thief who liked to steal the food of other animals. Do you have proof that Mr Woodpecker stole your food ? asked Mr Bear. Well..... I dont have actual proof ..... but who else could it be ? It must be my nearest neighbour, and thats the woodpecker! said Mr Squirrel stubbornly. The other animals did not quite believe him. Mr Woodpecker seemed very kind-hearted to them. One day, while Mr squirrel was sleeping, Mr Snake crept into his nest and wound his coils around the squirrel. He! He! Ive always found lots of food here, said the snake, But today, Ive got a really big meal. The owner of the food store himself ! Mr Squirrel could not do anything to help himself. Quite by chance, Mr Woodpecker glanced into Mr Squirrels home and saw Mr Snake about to swallow his prey. As quick as lightning, Mr Woodpecker swooped down to help Mr Squirrel. H e scratched the snakes body with his claws. Mr Snake turned to attack the woodpecker. Mr Woodpecker showed no fear. He bravely pecked at the snakes eyes. Blinded, Mr Snake finally release the squirrel and slithered away. In the end, Mr Squirrel realised that he had misjudged Mr Woodpecker. He was very sorry for all the bad things that he had said about the woodpecker, and he apologised to Mr Woodpecker. Thats all right, said Mr Woodpecker. I forgive you. We are neighbours and we should always help one another. All the other animals were also delighted that Mr Woodpecker and Mr Squirrel had become good friends.
