HEADTANK AND PENSTOCK INTAKE

1.1

SUBMERGENCE

S = 0.54 V D --> (MHEPP Resources Dev. Manual APP 46.9)

Symmetrical Approach
Data :
Q

= 13.00 m3/sec

Qdesign = 1.1* (9.44)

= 14.3 m3/sec (for 1 turbine)

= 2250 mm (diameter penstock)

= 3.60 m/sec

= 0.54 x 3.602.25 = 2.91 m

S+D

= 2.91 + 2.25 = 5.16 m

Penstock Intake Invert Elevation

NOL (S + D )

= 412.93 5.16 - = 407.77

NOL (Normal Operating Level)

= +412.93

Design intake invert elevation

= + 407.125

Design headtank base elevation

= + 406.00

Minimum water submergence to the penstock inlet is also checked.

Qmin

= 0.2* (13)

= 2.6 m3/sec (for 1 turbine)

= 2250 mm (diameter penstock)

= 0.65 m/sec

= 0.54 x 0.652.25 = 0.53 m

S+D

= 0.53 + 2.25 = 2.78 m

Max invert elevation = 411.3 - 2.78 = + 408.52 > 407.125, hence penstock invert
elevation designed to be at + 407.125.

MINIMUM HEADTANK DIMENSION

The main function of a headtank in a MHPP is to maintain flow availabitity and consistency.
The effective volume minimum that a headtank is
Vsc 10 sec x Qdesign m3
Vsc = L x B x dsc
L x B x dsc = 103.84 m3

where :
L

= Headtank length

= Headtank width

dsc

= effective operational headtank height (NWL-LWL)

dsc

= 412.93 411.30
= 1.63 m

Hence:
L

= 21 m

=7m

To give:
Vsc = 239.56 m3
