The Alluring Billionaire Country Doctor (Wives For The Western Billionaires 6) PAIGE CAMERON Randolph Brodie had

planned his whole life, and then he went in another direction to become a country doctor. He loved the work. But his fianc refused to consider living in a small town. Rand questioned his feelings for her. He found it too easy to go without her. Now he's looking forward to being free of any commitments.

Then he meets Marian Gaenor. She wants a husband, a home, and family. When they meet for the second time, they both realize the spark is there and they can't ignore it. But Rand wants to have fun and Marian wants more. Rand's receptionist gets sick and Marian fills in. They're thrown together in a different setting, and Rand is impressed with her work. But Rand's friend keeps reminding him to play the field. After Marian leaves without telling him, Rand fears he's let the best thing in his life go.

Prologue Randolph Brodie wandered around the people gathered at his brothers wedding reception. Dirk and Chelsea had said their vows at the small church in Frontier City. Their reception at the ranch was a large barbecue. Children ran around playing while their parents and other guests enjoyed visiting. Dr. Neels strolled over to him. Let me introduce you to some of the townspeople. If youre really serious about joining me, then theyll want to have a look at you. He grinned. Well start with the most difficult, Mrs. Lacey. Shes a determined, nosy old lady, but youll come to love her as I do.

Rand followed Dr. Neels, and he introduced Mrs. Lacey. She was sharp tongued, gave him a once-over, and told Dr. Neels he could do worse. At least hes easy on the eyes, she said. They were both chuckling when they moved on. After meeting too many people to ever remember all their names, Dr. Neels took mercy on him. I see a pretty girl standing alone under that tree. He nodded to the right. If I was young, Id go introduce myself. Glad to have a chance to wander off, Rand headed toward the blonde whod stood up with Chelsea at her wedding. Hello, Rand said. Im Rand Brodie. Marian Gaenor. She put out her hand. Chelseas my best friend. He wrapped his hand around hers and stared into sherry-brown eyes. She smiled, and his body jumped to attention. Her sweet floral fragrance blew across his face. He suddenly wanted to pull her body close against his. Wow, he hadnt expected such a response. He liked women, but this was different. He dropped her hand like it was a hot potato. It was a nice wedding, he said. His brain was refusing to work on all cylinders. Im happy for her. Your brother, Dirk, is a great guy. I think theyll be very happy. Rand glanced at the newlyweds. They were glowing and staring into each others eyes. Friends and family looked on, smiling. He turned back to Marian. If youd like, Ill introduce you to some more of my family. Please do. Id love to meet them. I arrived late last night and missed meeting everyone at the rehearsal dinner. He watched her as he made the introduction to his mother and Clay. Actually, he couldnt take his eyes off of her. He managed to stay at her side while they meandered around the yard. But then, when they got to Dirk and Chelsea, Marian stood to the side to talk with Chelsea, and Dirk turned to Rand. Im sorry Anna couldnt come. She had previous plans.

You still planning to move here? Chelsea and Marian had been talking, but he knew they heard his and Dirks discussion. Marian glanced his way. His brother had burst his balloon. Not on purpose. Yes, Im pretty certain Ill take the job. Annas agreeable? Dirk asked and raised an eyebrow. Maybe. Well, actually, I havent told her yet. Ah! Im going to tell her as soon as I get back to the city. When Rand glanced toward Chelsea, he saw Marian had walked off. She has to catch a plane in a few hours to get back to New York for work tomorrow, Chelsea said. She said to tell you good-bye. He could run and catch her. But for what purpose? He was still engaged, and she was too appealing. He had enough problems to work out without adding temptation to the list.

Chapter One Randolph Brodie dreaded the upcoming date with his fiance, Anna. Hed been back a few days since the wedding, and because he and Anna were both busy they hadnt had time for any long discussions. She wasnt going to be happy with his plans. He parked in front of her apartment building and went inside, up the elevator, and knocked on her door. Rand darling. Anna drew him inside. Ive missed you. This past week has been rush, rush, rush. Sit and Ill pour you a glass of wine. She went to the small bar built into an alcove off to the side of the living room and filled a wineglass from an open bottle of zinfandel. Enjoy. Ill just be a moment then Ill be ready to leave. She started to walk toward her bedroom. Anna, please join me. Before we go out I need to talk with you about something. She sat across from him on the sofa. You look worried. Dont tell me you havent decided between the two offices you looked at last week.

Im not going to get an office here in the city. Anna frowned. I dont understand. As you know, Ive made several visits home in the past few months. Ive been stopping in to see Dr. Neels. He stopped and took a swallow of his wine. The country doctor that took care of you and all your family. I remember you mentioning him in the past. Yes. Hes gotten older. Hes going to fully retire in another year or so. I rode out with him on some calls, and I realized I want to be a country doctor. Its so different. You really know your patients, and every day is interesting and challenging. The shock on her face did not bode well for him. Youre kidding. Im sorry, but Im not. I hope youll come with me. To live and practice in the middle of nowhere. Her voice rose to a high pitch. She jumped up and paced across the living room floor. Anna was a beautiful woman. Her long blonde hair swished around her. She was tall and had lush curves. Any man had to be insane to take a chance on losing her. But hed thought about his decision for several months and had applied for his Montana license. If he gave up this opportunity for Anna, he wouldnt be happy. Eventually their relationship would suffer. She stopped pacing and sat down. Her porcelain skin had turned a rosy red. I will not live on a ranch or in a tiny town. My job is here. You know Im considering an offer from one of the top dermatology clinics in this area. She put her hands out toward him. Im sure you enjoyed seeing the old doctor. Its natural you had a sudden thought that you might like to work with him. In a week or two youll realize what a big mistake that would be for your career. She got up. Ill finish my makeup. Well go on to dinner. Stepping in front of him, she leaned down and kissed his mouth. Wait and see if Im not right. It had not gone as hed expected. Surprisingly, she had not thrown her ring at him. In a way he wished she had. This was going to be much more difficult. Still, she might be right. He doubted it. Anyway, hed wait as she said for a few more weeks. Then, if he still felt the same, hed call Dr. Neels and accept the job. ****

Rands best friend, Andy Joyce, had invited him to lunch in the hospital cafeteria. Andy had chosen a small table in the back of the room. Evidently he wanted privacy. Anna must have asked him to talk to Rand. Thanks for the invite to such a luxurious eatery, Rand said, putting a teasing note in his voice, hoping to ward off any serious conversation. Andy grinned. I know its your favorite place. Rand put his plate on the table and then set the tray to the side. How are you doing? Been busy as we all have since finishing our residencies. Im thinking of joining one of the internal medicine groups here in the city, Andy said. Theyd be lucky to get you. Youre a damn fine internist. How about you? How long are you going to work part-time in the emergency room? I know youve had several lucrative offers. Anna called you. She begged me to talk with you. You know Im a pushover for any woman who gets tears in her eyes. Have you changed your mind? No, and Im not going to. When I went home for my brother Dirks wedding, I took time to see Dr. Neels again. I went on a few calls with him. Im convinced the jobs the right one for me. Anna has the perfect job for her here. There isnt any way to make it work. Bummer. Youll break the engagement? Hopefully she will. It hasnt been an easy decision. But I think she and I might have just gravitated together during our medical school years. Rand took a bite of his sandwich. What do you mean? Im not sure how much true emotion was involved. I took an extra year of residency in gerontology so wed finish together. We had our plans laid out. It was almost a businesslike decision. Rand shook his head. I shouldnt be able to turn away from it all so easily. Women are different. I doubt shes going to feel the same. Rand took a deep breath. No. I expect it will get nasty before its over.

Man, I dont envy you. I warned you, you needed to take your time before tying yourself down. Play the field, man. Dont jump into the frying pan for a long time after this. I wont. Damn, this is a mess. I dont want to hurt her. **** Anna opened the door. She wore a silky blue top, black slacks, and black sandals. Her blonde hair was pulled back into her familiar bun. Come in. I thought about suggesting we meet at Manuels for dinner, but this is better. We need privacy. She went to the bar and poured him a bourbon and water and her a martini. Were hitting the hard stuff tonight. Rand tried to tease and smile, but it fell flat when she frowned. Sit down. This is not a joking matter. Anna sat in a chair beside an end table. Rand took the couch. I cant believe youre going through with this. Weve planned our lives together. Why are you determined to destroy everything? Anna, did you ever think maybe wed be better friends than we would be spouses? What? We get along, and were good in bed together. Yes, but is there the excitement you expected? He knew he was on rocky ground and any minute might get her martini in his face. Anna had a temper. How ridiculous. Have you been reading romance novels? She gave a harsh laugh. All that nonsense about rockets going off and being overwhelmed. Its all in the writers mind. Were normal, happy people. I went to Dirks wedding. I know. Im sorry I couldnt go with you. Its all right. I understood youd already made other plans. But I watched Dirk and his new wife, Chelsea. They were glowing, and they kept touching each other every chance they got. Weve never been that way. Im not a touchy person. You know that. I do. Ive taught myself to not touch you too much. But I want a wife I can touch. One wholl glow for me. My hope for you is youll find a husband who can make you feel that way. I dont.

Anna stared at him, speechless. She gulped her martini and went to her bar and refilled. Wait a minute. I thought this started about you wanting to take a job in Montana. Now its about us? Is this how you justify ending our relationship? She took another swig of her drink. I want to be honest. I think we both deserve more. I realized it shouldnt be easy for me to leave you for a job. That made me think about us. He started to move closer. Anna waved him off. Get back on the couch. Look. Lets wait a few days and talk again. I really dont want to hurt you. Youre beautiful, smart, personable, everything a man could want. Except you. Her face hardened. Get out. Ill call you when, or if, I want to see you. Rand left. His stomach knotted. He hadnt handled that well. For the first time in his life he felt like an ass. **** Anna shut the door and freshened her drink. She intended to get soused. She turned on her classical music, kicked off her shoes, and lay on the couch. She was a planner, and in a few minutes Rand had torn down every block shed built in the plan for their life. She ticked them off in her head. Theyd be successful doctors in their field, busy with work, and making themselves known in the right circles. In about five years theyd have their one child. Well, she hadnt discussed that with Rand. He came from a family of six. Anna shuddered at the thought he might want a large family. She wasnt fond of children, nor sex really. But she was a great pretender. Evidently she hadnt fooled Rand. Good grief, shed never suspected he wanted fireworks and lots of touching. Anna emptied her drink and walked out on her balcony. Twinkling city lights shone in every direction. The beat of the busy metropolitan area hummed through her. This was where she belonged. When she reentered her living room, Mozarts music soared to the ceilings. No, Rand Brodie was not the man she thought she knew. He had a firmness shed never expected. The man she wanted would be easily molded into the right husband. Anna went in the kitchen and checked her freezer. She grabbed a frozen dinner and put it in the microwave. Shed make a new plan. In the dermatology group she was going to join, she might

find just the type of man for her. One of the partners had already made overtures. Shed flirted back. She got the dinner out of the microwave, poured herself a glass of iced tea, and sat at the small kitchen table. Her appetite was returning. She was back in control. Still, shed teach Rand a lesson. She wouldnt let him out of his engagement. Not yet. Only after shed found the right person to replace him. Rand was such a nice man. Hed go along with their engagement, for a while, to please her. And when the time was right, shed be the one to end their relationship. Rand Brodie was not the man for her to marry. But shed make him pay first before setting him free.

Chapter Two Four Months Later Marian Gaenor shut her office door. She was bone tired and wished she hadnt promised Bob, the man shed been dating casually these past three weeks, that shed go out with him tonight. Maybe shed call and cancel. Shed grab the subway home and curl up with a good book. But it was her thirty-first birthday. She should celebrate. All the way home she debated canceling or going. Her phone was ringing when she got to her door. Rushing inside, she picked up the receiver just in time. Hi, girlfriend, have any pizza? Chelsea. Its great to hear your voice. I have wine but no pizza. Wish you were here. I am. Im at the airport. Ill get the cabbie to stop for pizza and be there shortly. You dont have other plans, do you? I should have checked, but I wanted to surprise you. No. Come on. I cant wait to see you. As soon as Marian hung up, she called and cancelled her date. Ah, that felt good and freeing. Shed change into jeans and open the wine shed been saving for a special time. An hour later, Chelsea was at her door. Im here. Her arms were full of a large pizza box and a cake box. I saw a cake place. The cabbie agreeably stopped.

Wow, Im shocked and pleased. This is my best birthday in years. Come on in. Marian took the cake box, and they walked into her tiny kitchen. She opened the lid. Happy birthday to my best friend. Ah, thanks. She hugged Chelsea, trying to hide her tearful eyes. Are you OK? I dont think Ive seen you cry except at sad movies. Its nothing. Well, it is something. Im thirty-one. My clock is definitely winding down. Come to Montana. Theres lots of handsome cowboys around. Youd have them fighting over you. Id settle for one. Im not greedy. One good man. That doesnt sound like too much to ask for. Lets carry our food into the living room. Then you can tell me how you got off for a night without your husband. They sat around the low living room table and ate pizza. Marian handed Chelsea her wineglass. I cant drink wine. Water will be fine. No wine? Chelsea smiled. No. Im pregnant. Marian ran around the table and hugged her. How are you feeling? Im more tired than usual. But were so happy. We wanted to begin our family right away. Dirk is bursting with pride. How about you? Me, too. Id be more scared, but weve had some experience with Ty and Lilys baby. Dirk will be a wonderful daddy. And Im getting more confident about my skills as a momma. Im going to drive Lily crazy asking questions. Im so happy for the two of you. Thanks. But I hate seeing you so down about yourself and about not having a husband and baby. Youll find the right person. I know it. Chelsea took a bit of her pizza. I do love these evenings of pizza and talking. Wait, I know just the guy for you. If he wasnt engaged. Dirks brother, Rand, and you would be the perfect match. She waved her hand before Marian could speak. The good news is I think the engagement will end soon. Hes moved to Montana to be a country doctor. His fiance isnt happy. Shes made two short visits since hes been there.

I remember him from your wedding. And I havent been able to forget him. Hes a handsome man. But I cant wish for someone to break up. And theres no guarantee hed even be interested in me if he was free. You really are down. I think youre ready to hear my suggestion. What is it? Marian asked. You always have lots of vacation saved. Come for a long visit. Dirk has a small cabin he lived in until our house was built. You can stay there and have your privacy. We can visit every day. Ill show you around and introduce you to some cowboys. Chelsea grinned. The offer is tempting. I have six weeks saved. Marian took another sip of her wine. Chelsea ate another piece of pizza while Marian thought about taking a vacation. Ill do it. She jumped up and got a calendar. Lets see. If I put in for the month off on Monday, then my boss will have plenty of time to get over his snit before I leave. Ill plan on arriving on Saturday, two weeks from now. This is great. On that Sunday were all going to see Dirks mom. Youll get to meet the clan, as I call them. I wasnt sure Id be able to convince you to take me up on my offer. You caught me in a weakened state, depressed and tired. I need a break. Of course the boss will holler, but Ill shout back. She laughed. This calls for a shopping trip. More fun. Chelsea, youre my best friend. Im so lucky to have you. But dont forget the hunky men, or Ill put you down to second-best friend. I knew you couldnt stay sad for longer than a second, Chelsea said. I suppose Im sleeping on this couch tonight. No way. Youre a pregnant lady. You get the bed. I was teasing. I wasnt. But lets not go to sleep yet, Marian said. There must be a good horror flick on. She turned on the television and went to pop the popcorn. **** Two weeks later, as planned, Marian got off the plane and looked around for Chelsea. It was a small airport, and there werent many people waiting. Shed started toward the baggage area when a tall cowboy came striding in the door. He had on a light-tan cowboy hat, gray shirt, and jeans that hugged his slim hips and long legs. It took her a second to realize it was Rand headed in her direction.

Marian, welcome to Montana. Thanks. When he swept his hat off and gave her his lopsided, dimpled grin, her heart fluttered. I hope you dont mind me picking you up. Chelsea called and said she was having a difficult morning. I told her Id be glad to take her place. He glanced around. Wed better get your luggage. I could get beeped at any moment. Marian had to take quick double steps to his one as he strode off to the luggage area. There were only a few bags left on the rotating belt. Mines the two red ones. He raised an eyebrow and gave her that heart-stopping smile. Bright red, so you cant miss them. I often have periods of flamboyancy. Ive been known to dye my hair pink, dress in red, and wear platform shoes. In red I suppose? he spoke dryly. Oh my, no. Far too much red. They were in pink to match my hair. Rand studied her for a moment and then laughed out loud. Several people looked their way, but it didnt seem to bother him. Still chuckling, he grabbed her bags and led the way outside to the parking lot. My truck is the black one. He nodded his head to the right. Marian followed him. She was quite enjoying herself, more than she had in a long time. He opened her door, and she swung up into the big monster. Rand put the cases in the backseat. He opened the drivers side and got in. Soon they were on a two-lane highway. Hed slipped on dark glasses and gone quiet. Why do men have to have such huge vehicles? I think it must be a sexual thing. Look at me. Mines bigger and better than yours. She heard a choking noise. Are you all right? He howled in laughter. Do you always say exactly whats on your mind? Its a bad habit of mine. Rand chuckled again. Thanks for the laughs. I tend to be the opposite. My family says Im too serious.

Ill be happy to cheer you up anytime you need it. Just call. If Im at work, Ill leave a recording of jokes. Now I know what Chelsea meant when she said you could be incorrigible at times. She did? Marian put her hand up to her chest and pretended to be surprised. Wait until I see her. A beep sounded loud in the cab of the truck. Not good, Rand commented. He pulled to the side of the road. Excuse me. I have to make this call. Go ahead. No problem. Im going to stretch my legs. She got out as he punched in some numbers. She walked along the roadside. In the distance were snow-covered mountains and trees losing their colorful leaves. Fall was here and quite cool in Montana. She buttoned her light jacket. Rand drove his truck forward to pick her up. Get in. We have to make a stop on the way to Chelseas. As soon as she shut the door, he took off. An emergency? she asked. Yes. Ive told them to call 9-1-1, but were closer. Well get there first. A farmer cut his arm. Hes bleeding pretty bad. He glanced her way. You can stay in the truck if you want to. No, Id like to get out. Maybe I can help calm the family. Theyre probably hysterical. After riding about six miles, they turned down a two-lane dirt road. Chelsea held onto her door handle as the truck bumped over the ruts. Rand slammed on the brakes. He got out, grabbed his bag, and ran toward the barn area. Chelsea got out more slowly. She stood still for a second to catch her breath and settle herself. Then she started walking to the farmhouses porch. Three children huddled around each other and stared across the yard in the direction Rand had gone. Hi, Im Marian. She moved slowly. They turned and stared. Marian sat on the step closest to them. Ill bet youre worried, but Dr. Brodies here now. Hell take care of your father. It is your father whos hurt? A little blonde girl about four years old came to sit beside Marian. Daddys hurt. Mamas with him. Her little forehead wrinkled. Teddyshe nodded to the taller boysaid Daddys bad hurt? Dr. Brodie is taking care of him. Hes a good doctor.

Daddy told Mama Dr. Brodie is young and has a lot to learn to catch up with Dr. Neels, the taller boy spoke, obviously reciting words hed overheard. Dr. Brodie has good training. Hell get the experience. Whats experwhatever that word was? the small boy asked. Experience is learning by doing. Dr. Neels has been a doctor for many years. Hes learned as hes worked. Does that make sense? Marian asked. The two boys had come closer. The younger one, about five or six, sat on her other side. Are you the doctors wife? the older boy asked. No. Im a friend. He picked me up at the airport. Im here to visit my best friend, Chelsea Brodie. The sound of the siren had them all looking at the road. An ambulance came barreling down the rough terrain and drove straight to the barn. Shortly afterward, they carried out a stretcher, and sirens howled as they headed back down the road. A short, brown-haired woman and Rand walked toward the porch. Rand ruffled the younger boys hair and then picked up the little girl. Hows Susie today? he asked. Susie threw her arms around his neck. Is Daddy dead? No. Hell be fine, sweetheart. He hurt his arm, but theyll fix it at the hospital. Hell be home in a day or two. Susie kissed his cheek. Thank you. Rand smiled and sat her down. Mrs. Nettles, do you need anything? I cant thank you enough for getting here so fast. Well be fine. My neighbor will take the kids for the night. Ill join Clyde at the hospital. All right. Ill be there myself later today. Marian, are you ready? She turned to the three children. It was nice meeting you all. Susie motioned for her to bend down. Marian did, and the little girl kissed her cheek. Susie looked up at Rand as Marian straightened. I like your friend, Susie said. Me, too, the little boy piped in, and the older one nodded.

Im glad, Marian said. I like you three also. They waved and walked to the truck. Rand opened her door and put his hands around her waist to lift her onto the seat. You are full of surprises, Marian Gaenor. He winked and went around to get in. Next stop Chelseas.

Chapter Three Rand parked in front of a small cabin. Marian loved the setting. She couldnt help but have a great vacation. It certainly started out right being met at the airport by Rand, and soon she and Chelsea would have a nice long chat. This is where Chelsea said youd be staying. You can see the big house from here. Ill take your suitcases in, and then I have to go. Marian jumped out of the truck. Thanks for the ride. He put the cases inside the door. Sorry about the stop, but those types of situations happen when youre the only doctor around. My grandmother used to talk about doctors who made house calls. Its nice. You get to know the people you take care of in a different way. She shrugged. Not so impersonal, as most things are today. Exactly. I tried to explain that to my fiance, but she doesnt get it. His expression changed as though he wished he hadnt become personal. See you. He waved, got in his truck, and turned to get back on the road. Marian watched until he was out of sight. Ive got to get him out of my head. That cowboy might easily steal my heart. Shed walk down the path and see Chelsea. She closed the door and pocketed the key left in the lock for her. A cool breeze blew across the prairie. The place was all wide-open spaces and vast stretches of blue sky. Insects buzzed around the few fall flowers, and a lone hawk circled the sky above his prey. What a difference from her noisy days back home. Her shoulders were already relaxed. This was what she needed to regroup. Chelsea saw her and came flying out the door. She grabbed Marian, and they hugged. Were going to have so much fun. I thought youd never get here.

Were late because Rand had an emergency stop. A man had been injured. His wife was taking care of him, so the children were left alone and had huddled together on the porch. I talked with them to calm their fears. They were afraid their father would die. It felt good to be able to help. But, how about you? You must be feeling better. I am. The morning sickness comes and goes. Some mornings Im fine and others not so much. But this worked out good. You got to meet Rand again. And see youd make a perfect doctors wife. Chelsea led her into the kitchen and poured two glasses of iced tea. The room smelled of baking chicken. I hope you arent putting yourself out for me by cooking when youre not well. Surprisingly, I love to find new recipes and try them. Whod ever suspect I had such hidden talents? She grinned. Dirk says Ill have him fat if I dont stop. Chelsea sat a bowl of green beans on the table and snapped the ends off then split them in half. How long can you stay? Im taking a full month. I still have two weeks vacation left. The boss ranted and raved then threatened to fire me if I ever take this much time again. As you know, hes more hot air than real threat. We have to find you a job here at the ranch or in town. I cant imagine what it would be, Marian said. Give me time. Ill think of something. You keep your office staff in fine order. There are several businesses in town. One must need a manager. Ill ask around. Chelsea, you dont have to try and fix me up with a job or a man. That was all teasing. Im not sure Id like living here full time. Lets relax and see how things go. All right, but I am going to call Rand and invite him to dinner. She held up her hands. Thats all, I promise. Yeah, right. I see the matchmaking twinkle in your eye. Just because youre so unbelievably happy doesnt mean you have to marry off all your friends. Only you. I miss you. Itd be such fun to have you as a neighbor. And if Rand isnt the one, I know several other good candidates. Stop.

Chelsea laughed. All right, already. Ill zip my lip. The rest of the day went by fast. Marian helped cook and, around two oclock, insisted Chelsea rest. Im going to the cabin. Ill be unpacking if you need me. Be back here at six. I will. The cabin was small but cozy. It didnt take long to clear her two suitcases. Shed brought jeans, warm shirts, sweaters, a pair of boots, walking shoes, and one pair of sexy high heels. A woman couldnt be blamed for hoping for at least one hot date during the month. She knew just who shed love to have that hot date with. Dr. Brodie. He sent her heart to fluttering every time his silvery-blue eyes looked at her. When hed put his hands around her waist to help her in the truck after his doctors visit her body pulsed with the desire to feel him touching her in much more intimate places. Her face heated at the thought. What was the matter with her? She didnt usually have such erotic daydreams about someone she hardly knew. Still, even at the wedding, when their hands connected shed felt a buzz go through her body. And if she wasnt mistaken, shed seen a spark in his eyes. Then shed heard him and his brother talking about Anna and later discovered he was engaged. Bummer. From what he said, he hadnt broken off his relationship with her. She must have a strong hold on him, since they were living in separate states. Marian glanced at the clock. Shed put on her walking shoes and go for a brisk hike. She needed to stretch her legs. When she returned, shed shower and dress for the evening. Outside, the cool air perked her up. Shed been sleepy. This was better than lying down. In New York she didnt get near enough exercise. Her mind went back to the handsome Dr. Brodie. Chelsea had said there were other options, other cowboys. Ill concentrate on them and forget the doctor. Liar. I admit it wont be easy. But I have to try. Hopefully we wont see much of each other after dinner tonight. **** Rand, Im glad you could make it. Alls quiet out there?

For the present. Dr. Neels is covering for me for the next few hours. Its nice you have him available. When is he fully retiring? Chelsea asked. In about nine months. I need to find a partner by then. I dont know how he did it alone all these years. He said he and the doctor in the next county covered for each other. Apparently he tried several times to get new doctors to join him, but they all said no after riding with him for a day or two. I may have the same problem. I hope not. Wasnt there anyone else in your class who might be interested in this type of medicine? Chelsea asked. She pulled the chicken out of the oven and placed it on the counter. The green beans were bubbling. Hi, all. Dirk breezed into the kitchen. He stopped to pull Chelsea into his arms and kiss her. I missed you. She grinned at her husband. I missed you, too. I dont know what it is about cowboys. Once you love one, you cant get him out of your mind. Its our lethal charm, darlin. Get out of here, big head. Go shower. Were embarrassing your brother. Supper wont be long. Marian will be here any minute now. Chelsea glanced out the window. Why dont you go to the cabin and tell her to hurry? she asked Rand. Sure. He strode out and along the path to the cabin. Marian was coming out the door as he arrived. Ive been sent to bring you to dinner. I went for a walk and then lay down for a minute that ended up much longer. The excitement about my first vacation in ages kept me awake last night. It caught up with me after the fresh air and exercise. Your cheeks are pink. You got some sunburn. I didnt think about using sunscreen with it being so cool. But I ought to have known better. He walked slowly back to the big house. You were good with the Nettles children. Thanks again for the help. You seem comfortable with kids. Thanks. I like babies and children. Although living in New York I dont have a lot of contact with them. My brothers and sister all stayed in North Carolina. I try to visit twice a year to get my nieces-and-nephews fix.

Im the next to oldest of seven. Mom had her hands full. I was the first girl, so I learned a lot early on. Is that why you became a career girl? To get away from domesticity? No. Id fantasized about working and living in New York for years. And at first having my own apartment, no matter how small, was a treat. The major delight was not having to share the bathroom. Believe me, I fully understand. My small place in town is the first time Ive lived alone. Ive been at home or in school with roommates up until now. Im a late starter. Chelsea came to the door. You two are the slowest walkers Ive seen. Dinners ready. She grinned and held the door open. When Rand walked past her, he glanced back and saw Chelsea wink at Marian. Dirk came into the kitchen. His hair was still damp. Hed changed to a clean pair of jeans and a dark-green shirt. You two look like a couple, Dirk teased. Chelsea swatted him with a kitchen towel. Be good. Youve embarrassed our guests. Theyre both blushing. No way. Rand never blushes. But I do apologize if I embarrassed you, Marian. His eyes were lit with mischief. Would you like a beer, Rand? Ill take a soft drink. I might get a call later. All right. Chelsea handed him a can and shooed him and Dirk out of the kitchen. Ill call when dinner is on the table. Marian and I are going to visit and finish your meal. Dirk and Rand took their drinks and left the kitchen. **** They look a lot alike. Chelsea nodded as she started cutting the chicken. They all resemble each other. The sister is dainty and a blonde, and the younger brother has light-brown hair, but youd still know they were all from the same family. Youll see tomorrow. And, Chelsea added, Ive heard Anna is

actually going to be there. I havent met her yet. Im glad to see you and Rand are getting along great. Dont start putting us together. Remember theres a third, his fiance. Not for long. See if Im not right. Here, whip up the potatoes. Ill put the chicken on the table. Dinner was delicious, and Marian enjoyed watching the camaraderie between the three others at the table. When Rand excused himself to leave, Marian said shed go, too. Its been a long day. Ill see you tomorrow. Wait, Ill get my flashlight and walk you to the cabin. Dirk started out of the kitchen. Ill drive her, Rand said. Good idea. Chelsea put her arm around Dirk, whod come back to her side. Rand helped Marian into the truck. Then he went around and got in on the drivers side. It was total darkness in the direction of the cabin. Im sorry to put you to this trouble. Its only a minute drive to your door. But for a city girl the darkness would be scary. I cant believe how quiet and dark it is. Just a sliver of moon but millions of stars. In the city you forget stars are even up there. After being away except for short visits from college and medical school, I experienced some of the same reactions. Ive done some readjusting myself. He stopped in front of the cabins door. Marian turned in his direction. Have you regretted taking this job? Im sure you must have had offers to join profitable groups in the city where you trained. No. I love my job. I wont make as much doing this work, but I dont really need the money. I want to do something meaningful. He spread his hands to encompass the vastness of the area. This is home. You are a very nice man. Suddenly the air went still. Rand stared into her eyes and then at her lips. Marians heart skipped a beat. For a second, she thought he might lean forward and kiss her. But he blinked his eyes and looked out the windshield.

Wait until you get to know me. Im sure my fiance wouldnt agree at this point. His words yanked them both back from the precipice. Id better get inside. Thanks for the ride. Ill watch until you turn on the lights. Marian flipped the first switch by the door. She waved as he drove out of sight. Her face felt hot and her body frustrated. She had wanted his kiss and his touch. It was difficult to keep reminding herself he was engaged. Shed better get Chelsea to introduce her to a different cowboy, very soon. **** Rand drove slowly back to town. This evening had been fun. In fact, the whole day had been better since Marian Gaenor arrived. She was a pretty, enticing woman. Hed been very tempted to kiss her rosy lips. Her light floral fragrance fit her, and a hint still lingered inside the truck. He laughed again, remembering her comment about the big truck. Hed like to show her something else big of his. His dick throbbed with the desire to sink into her pussy. This was probably an overreaction to his celibacy of late. But he remembered hed felt much the same at Dirks wedding when he first met her. Tomorrow, Anna was going to be here. They needed to talk. She wasnt going to move to Montana, and his feelings hadnt changed about his job or her since their last conversation. Hed realized just in time that marrying her would be a mistake. Moving home had changed his outlook on his life. Hed given Anna enough time to adjust to what hed said. He was breaking the engagement. She hadnt given this place a chance. Shed visited two days since he moved. He was glad it was almost over. Just as he reached town, his phone rang. Surprisingly, it was his old friend Andy. He answered as he parked his truck by the upstairs apartment hed rented over his office. Hi, whats up? Rand asked. He unlocked his door and went inside. Are you sitting down? I am now. Rand sank into his only lounge chair. I was going to tell the internist group I interviewed with about a month ago, yes. Theyd asked me to return for another meeting and I did. Then I went home to visit my folks. Im certain they recommended you accept the offer.

They did at first. But I told them what Id really like to do. What? Care to have a visitor? I landed about ten minutes ago. Ive rented a car, and Ill head your way. Wow, Im surprised but pleased youre visiting me in Montana. Especially since you must be right in the middle of negotiating your future job. Im anxious to hear all about what you want to do and what your parents said. You remember Im on the main street. My place is above the office. I know. See you soon. Andy clicked off. Within an hour, they were sitting at Rands kitchen table drinking coffee. Tell me all, Rand said. Andy stretched out his long legs. After you left I was at loose ends. We were roommates all through college and medical school. Now you live hundreds of miles from me. Your taking a leap and doing something different appealed to me. I thought, what the heck, maybe Im ready to do the same. Just like that? Yep. You know Im a creature of impulse. Which sometimes leads you astray. Rand refilled their coffee cups. True. This is different. I flew here a couple of weeks ago. You didnt call me. No. I wanted to make my decision on my own. Be sure it was right for me. What decision? Get it out. Cant you guess? Im asking for a spot as your partner. Yours and Dr. Neels until he leaves. Andy put his chin up. I am good at my job. Rand had tilted his chair back. At Andys words, he fell forward. You certainly are. Wed be lucky to get you. But youre not serious. I am. I sent off my application for licensure in Montana a month after you left and put down Dr. Neelss name as my supervisor and your name second. Dr. Neels called me and said they

contacted him. He explained hed notify them of my exact start date. I told him you didnt know about the application and Id rather tell you myself. After I made my final decision. Just in case I decided on changing my direction. What? You didnt give yourself time to think about it or check out the town. Andy shrugged. I did the checking later. It never hurts to be licensed in two states. Arent you pleased? Well make a great partnership. Of course Im happy, but I hope you havent made a mistake. I think I suggested the same to you. Rand grinned. You did. But Im from this area. Youve never lived in a small Western town. Im that rich Eastern snob you called me shortly after we met, and Id had enough drinks to punch you in the nose. He grinned. Then we became friends. I do know how to ride. Ive visited Texas and Wyoming. I like the looks of this area. Boy, youd better be sure. Were going to sign you up on Monday before you have time to change your mind. Tomorrow Im going to take you with me to my moms. The family hasnt seen you in ages. They were asking about you recently. You wont get a fight from me. Your mom is a great cook. But you dont have to sign me up. Dr. Neels did that two weeks ago. Then lets turn in. I have two bedrooms, luckily, or youd be sleeping on my lumpy couch. Tomorrow will be a hectic day. Are you off? Dr. Neels is filling in. He knows Anna is coming for the day. Id have thought that would be over by now, Andy said. It is. All but the shouting. He hoped he was wrong about the shouting, but he doubted it considering Annas temper. Rand hadnt made a firm decision until today. How much influence did meeting Marian have on his determination to end the engagement? None, he hoped. Andy warned him months ago not to jump back into the fire too soon. Hed better remember his advice.

Chapter Four Marian got into the back of Dirks truck. I dont mind riding in the back, Chelsea said. Youre our guest. Dirk can point out places of interest. You said it wasnt far. Ill be fine. Im not going to split up the lovebirds, she teased. Chelsea got in the front, and Dirk went around to the drivers seat. He glanced in the backseat at Marian. You met most of my family at our wedding, but today youll have more time to get to know them all. Im looking forward to it. She sat back to enjoy the ride. Her throat tightened. She tried not to be envious of her best friends life. Chelsea was lucky. She had a hunky husband and was expecting their baby. Chelsea glanced around from the front to see Marian. Its quiet back there. Im enjoying the view. I like this open country. Great. Maybe youll settle here. Remember, no matchmaking, Marian reminded her. Thats like asking my darling wife to sew her lips shut. Shell never be able to keep that promise. Chelsea laughed and swatted his arm. The drive didnt take long. They parked beside several other vehicles and walked toward the front door. Mrs. Brodie will be out here before we can knock, Chelsea said. Sure enough, she flew out to meet them. Come right in and sit. How are you feeling? Im fine, and I wont break. Chelsea hugged Mrs. Brodie. You know that after having six children. Yes, but let me fuss. This will be my first grandchild.

And he or she will be spoiled rotten. Thats what grandparents are for, my dear. She smiled at Marian. Hello, we didnt get to talk much at the wedding. Im Mama Brodie or Jane to everyone. You are? Marian Gaenor. Ah, yes. Sorry I forgot. There were a number of new people, and we didnt have much time to talk to all of them. Welcome to my home. Dirk held the door open while his mother motioned them inside. Mrs. Brodie walked Marian around and reintroduced her to Sam and Grace, whom shed met very briefly when leaving Chelsea and Dirks wedding reception. Then she led her across to where two of the brothers appeared to be in a heated discussion. They both stopped talking and smiled when their mother introduced her. Clay was movie-star handsome. But shed noticed he had frowned once or twice during the wedding activities and again today during his discussion with his brother. Not the best personality of the bunch. The other brother, Graham, was, according to Chelsea, the eccentric. She saw what Chelsea meant. He looked similar to his brothers, but there were differences. His face was ruggedly handsome, and he had hooded blue-gray eyes. His dark-reddish hair appeared uncombed and longer than the others. He had the same tall, athletic body, and Marian guessed he might be an inch or so taller than Dirk. Everyone is here but Rand. Hes bringing his fiance and a friend from medical school. Theyll be here any minute, Mrs. Brodie said. Excuse me while I check on things in the kitchen. She rushed off. See what I mean about coming here? Its great and always interesting, Chelsea whispered. She had walked up behind Marian. They are an intriguing family. Marian heard the door open and looked across the room as a tall, beautiful blonde dressed in a short, slinky, yellow dress and wearing high heels came in the front door. Rand and another man followed her in. Sam and Grace went to meet them. I love those shoes, Grace said. Sam shook hands with the new man. Rand raised his voice. You all remember my old roommate, Andy. Hes going into partnership with me. Have you all gone crazy? Clays hard tone had everyones attention. Two fine doctors wasted in the country.

You dont think our local people deserve good medical care? Rand walked up and stood right in front of Clay. Sure. But not from two men who graduated at the head of their class and have unlimited potential. Im sure your moving influenced Andy. Maybe, Andy said. But I wouldnt have asked for the job unless I was excited about it. Well, Im glad someone in this family has good common sense. Anna joined the group around Clay. Ive tried my best to change Rands mind. He wont budge, Clay. Too bad were all so stubborn, Clay said. He smiled at his mom. Mrs. Brodie had returned to the room and had a concerned look on her face. Didnt we get that trait from Dad? Yes, it was his only fault. That brought a laugh from them all. Marian took the time to study Anna, the fiance. No wonder Rand was hanging on to her. Beautiful, smart, a doctor for goodness sake, and accepted by the family. Mrs. Brodie had hugged her. I definitely dont fit the bill for the type of woman Rand likes. Even if they broke up, he wouldnt be interested in me. At least not seriously. Rand turned and saw Marian. He smiled and waved. Anna looked to see who he was greeting. Her eyes narrowed. Looking directly at Marian, Anna took Rands arm and brushed the side of her body against him. The message was loud and clear. He belonged to her. **** Darling, would you get me a glass of wine? Anna purred into Rands ear. He glanced down at her hands on his arm and her body standing so close. Atypical behavior for Anna. Sure. White or red? She ran her tongue along the edge of her white teeth. A faint flare of desire stirred inside him. Red wine and some of the slices of cheese. She nodded toward the table holding hors doeuvres. Im going to mingle. Anna gave him a big smile. Her fingers trailed down his arm before she walked away. Puzzled, Rand shook his head then went to get her food and wine. He still hadnt had the discussion to finalize their ending the engagement. Shed arrived late this morning. Shed flown in and was flying back late tonight.

Better watch out. Shes a barracuda. Rand looked to the left. Grace was filling a small plate with hors doeuvres. Who are you talking about? Rand, dont be so blind. Who do you think? Your precious fiance. You liked her when I first brought her home. I was still young and impressionable. I hadnt been to New York and met other barracudas. He looked around the room. Anna had stopped to talk with Andy. Then she casually turned and stood in front of Marian. The dislike between the two women would be obvious to anyone watching them. Rand saw it in their posture and in Marians expression. He couldnt see Annas. Hed like to hear what they were saying. The woman shes talking to is Chelseas friend. I like her. Shes a genuine person. And you know this after meeting her thirty minutes ago? Its called womans intuition. But I met her briefly at the wedding, too. Grace gave him the once-over. Men, including my brothers, dont understand or appreciate our intuition. Im going to rescuewhat was her name? Marian. Grace grinned at him. I thought you remembered. You look at her like a man starving and not for food. Laughing, she sauntered off in Marians direction. Rand poured red wine in a glass and put some crackers and cheese on a plate. He started across the room to join Anna and his sister, who were both talking with Marian. Marian raised her head, and their eyes connected. She stopped him for a second in midstride. When she looked away, he took a breath and stepped forward. What the hell? I have to be careful. I dont want to be that attracted to anyone. Not now. He planned to end his engagement today. He didnt want another woman in his life except for fun. Not for a long time anyway. As Andy had said, Rand needed to enjoy his freedom. Maybe he could. Marian was here on vacation. Theyd enjoy the time she had and say good-bye with no regrets. Anna turned to walk off. She saw Rand and stopped. Darling, thank you for the wine and food. I am thirsty and hungry. Lets go outside and talk while I sip my drink and eat the crackers and cheese. I know just the place. Well go to the gazebo. Its so romantic sitting by the lake.

Good idea, Rand said. Hed have a chance to tell her their engagement was over. Please excuse us. He smiled at Marian and nodded to his sister. Anna led the way, taking long strides to the front door. He could almost see the steam coming out of the top of her head. She was pissed. Better to get her far away from the others. She stomped across the terrace and down the slope to the lake. When they got to the gazebo she went inside, put down her wine, and turned before Rand had time to take a seat. Her hand flew out and hit his cheek. Ive been wanting to do that since the first day you told me about this absurd job. And I saw the way you looked at Marian. Shes barely been here a day from what she said. How many other women have you been with since you moved here? Rand seldom got mad, but fury swept through him. He took a deep breath before answering. Sit down, he ordered. Ill do as I want. Please sit down. He kept his voice level but firm. Something in his tone must have got through to her. She sat. First, I have no idea why you slapped me. If you do it again, this conversation is over before it starts. Second, we are hardly engaged. You wanted time and to end it yourself. Ive given you months. Im out of patience. Our engagement is ending now, today. Hah, because I saw what you really are and called you on it. Youve been cheating on me this whole time. And what do you use as proof? The fact I talked with another woman. I saw the way you looked at her. His harsh laugh had her looking at him, puzzled. Ive never even kissed her. I wanted to, but I remembered our agreement. I think youre throwing these accusations around because of your guilt. Id bet youve been hunting for another husband and cheated on me. The quick flush on her face gave him her answer. I didnt want our talk today to end in an argument, Rand said. Id hoped we might have a civil discussion. I was hurt after you left. And by the things you said about our relationship. Perhaps I did have a short fling with one of the partners. It meant nothing. She flung her body against his and put her arms around his neck. We can make this work. Leave this place and return to the bustling city. Well have money, important friends, a good life.

Rand pulled her arms from around his neck and moved her back toward her seat. A good life for you. Not for me. Its over, officially and forever. Keep the ring. He strode out of the gazebo and back to the house. If anyone noticed his face, which he was sure they did, they didnt comment. He walked across the room to where Andy was talking with Clay. Excuse me. Andy, since you have to leave for the airport soon, would you take Anna with you, now? Shes not leaving until tonight. He looked at Rand, puzzled. Im sure shell find an earlier flight. Ill make this up to you. Youd better. You owe me big. Im taking a tiger in my car. She may beat me up. Rand managed to laugh. Only with words. Andy held his head. Thats the worst. Rand and Clay chuckled as Andy mumbled all the way out the door. You have a good, loyal friend in Andy, Clay said. The best. I hope hes making the right decision for him with this move. Why dont you encourage him to stay in the city? Ill bet hes never lived in the country. You never accept peoples decisions if they arent what youd do. I cant believe it. Now youre trying to control someones life thats not even family. Where does your butting yourself into something that isnt your business end? Irritated, Rand turned to walk off. Clay took hold of his shoulder. Dont act like Dirk. Im not controlling. Just suggesting. He might be happier living in the big city. This appears to be an impulsive move for him. Youve come home. No one stopped you. You disregarded all of our advice. No one controlled you. Rand saw the hurt in his brothers eyes before he hid it. Clay, Im sorry. Anna put me in a pisspoor mood. I took it out on you. Lets go have a beer. By the way, where is your skinny model? Rand asked, a grin on his face. Shes usually an ornament on your arm. Clay pretended to glower. Dont start again or the beer will be on your shirt. Laughing, they headed for the refrigerator. ****

Marian was puzzled by what happened before dinner. Anna didnt come back in the house, and Andy left. When they gathered at the table, the extra plates had been removed. Rand spoke from over her shoulder. You can sit anywhere. But since Andy had to get back to the city and he took Anna to the airport with him, I hoped you might be my dinner companion. May I pull this chair out for you? She nodded yes and once she was seated, Rand took the place to the right of her. Chelsea sat to her left. She nudged Marian in the ribs with her elbow and grinned. Mrs. Brodie was seated at the end. Bowls and plates heaped with chicken, ham, potato salad, baked potatoes, glazed carrots, and baked beans were passed around. Conversation flowed. Although several brothers disagreed, there were no raised voices or anyone getting upset. Laughter went around the room as easily as the food. You arent eating much, Rand said. He looked at her almost-full plate. Im fascinated by your family. Theyre wonderful. We are diverse in our interests and careers. We all love these dinners Mom has to keep us close together. None of us wants to miss a single one. But occasionally we do. Your mom raised a nice family and a good-looking one. We get our good looks from you, dont we, Mom? Rand called down the table to her. Everyone burst into laughter. Rand explained, Dad said any good looks we had were credited to Mom. He said hed been surprised when he lassoed such a handsome filly. Id like to have met him. Its obvious he was a strong influence in your lives, Marian said. She was taken back when Mrs. Brodie got out of her seat and came to her chair. Mrs. Brodie bent over and hugged Marian then whispered in her ear, Dont leave too soon, sweet Marian. I like you and expect you to lasso my boy Rand. He needs a woman with a good heart. Marian blushed when she kissed her cheek. Mrs. Brodie headed to the kitchen. Is anyone other than me ready for my lemon meringue pie? Several hands raised. Ill get it. The rest of you take your time finishing. Marian ate most of her meal. Though the delicious food couldnt keep her attention long. Not when so much was going on around her. She did eat her pie. She saw Rand grin at her as she practically licked her lips at the end. I have to ask your mother for the recipe. Ill bake it when I go home for Thanksgiving.

Shell give it to you. Itll please her that you asked. Look, well be breaking up soon. May I drive you to the cabin? That would be great. Ill let Dirk know Ive got you. Rand strode off to find Dirk. Chelsea came to her side when Rand left. Hes showing a definite interest in you. Im sure the engagement is off. Hes driving me back to the cabin. But, Chelsea, he isnt going to want anything serious. Not that Ill turn down a date if he offers. I have to remember thats all it is. A good time. You never know. Think positive. I think Dirk is feeding you happy pills and you want everyone else to be happy. Not a bad thing to wish for your friend, Chelsea said. And for your information Dirk is my happy pill. Ready? Rand came back to her side. You dont mind me borrowing Marian, do you? he asked Chelsea. Not at all. Just handle with care. Chelsea winked and left them. Rand put his arm around her waist. Lets tell the others good-bye and head out. She found herself saying quick good nights. Rand had her in his truck in no time. You were in such a hurry. I hope they dont think I was rude. They wont. They knew I wanted you to myself. Are you still engaged? No. For sure? Without a doubt. Rand leaned across the small space between them and kissed her. He grinned. Ive been wanting to do that since we first met.

Marian touched her lips. Rand started the truck. They were both quiet as he drove along the highway. Dating him for fun is dangerous to my peace of mind. One little push and I could fall right over the cliff into love.

Chapter Five The lights shed left on outside the cabin and inside by the front window welcomed them when they arrived. Thank you for driving me back. Her hand went to the door handle. Arent you going to invite me inside? Id love a cup of fresh coffee. Rand, tonight you broke your engagement. I dont intend to be a quick fix for you suddenly feeling lonely and horny. Give yourself some time to regroup. Ive had months. I tried to end it before I moved here. We waited to give her time to get used to the idea. I had dropped a sudden surprise on her when I decided to be a country doctor. He leaned forward again. Marian stopped him with her hand on his chest. Still, you need time. Im working and on call the rest of the week. Dr. Neels and his wife are going on a three-day cruise. Good. It will keep you busy. Marian opened the truck door and ran to the cabin. When she slipped inside, she lay against the closed door and listened to him drive off. Her body had shouted yes, yes, yes at her and ached for his touch. But she didnt want him this way, on the rebound. Time would tell if she had made the right decision. She went into the small bath, showered, and put on her nightgown. In the kitchen, she poured a glass of milk and put three cookies on a plate. The food was solace for her disappointment at having to say no. Marian sat in a soft chair in the living room. She curled her legs and feet up and stared out the window. The moon cast a silver glow across the land. In the distance a dog barked. Otherwise there was silence. She liked Montana and the people.

Like Chelsea, she was tired of the rat race in New York. Tomorrow, shed go to town and check for jobs. Why not give her and Rand time to see if there was a strong enough attraction between them to last for the long haul? If not, shed go home to North Carolina and have her family close to her. After seeing Rands family today, Marian realized how much she needed people who cared around her. It was a good plan. She ate the last cookie and finished her milk. She might sleep tonight after all. **** Rand got in a cold shower. Marian didnt appear to be anxious to only have fun. Why did they all want practically a commitment before saying yes? It wasnt like they were young children. He was thirty-one. She must be that age or close. He stepped out and dried his hair and body then pulled on his jeans. There was beer in his fridge. After popping it open he slouched in his lounge chair. He took a couple of swigs of the cold liquid. She was right. He was pushy. Hell, itd been months since hed had sex. His cock got hard every time he thought the word. Maybe his attraction to her was just his hunger to sink into her pussy. But he didnt think so. Hed never been a player who went from one woman to the next. It was late. He needed to sleep. The next week promised to be very busy. Hed put Marian out of his mind and look forward to the new challenges facing him. This was the first time Dr. Neels had been gone. Rand knew his job. What could happen? **** At six that morning he wished he hadnt had the earlier thought. The husband of the woman who handled the office with a firm but gentle hand called. Eloise is sick. Shes at the hospital. They think she may have had a heart attack. Shes not going to be in today for sure and probably will be out longer. Ill be there in a few minutes, Rand assured her husband. When he hung up, it hit him. She was his right hand. How the hell would he manage without her? Dr. Neels and his wife were leaving town early today. He wasnt going to let them know. Rand dressed in his wool shirt, jeans, and boots. He grabbed his jacket on the way out. Early mornings were cold.

During the drive to the hospital, he kept trying to think of someone to fill in during the morning office hours. He could take afternoon calls while he was out and about. Eloise was still in the emergency room when he arrived. She took his hand and held tight. They say it might be my heart. Fear showed on her drawn face. If its real serious, Id have to fly to the city to one of those large impersonal hospitals. I dont want to go, Dr. Brodie. Wait until we hear the results of your lab work and X-rays. Your problem might be managed by medicine. Rand shook her husbands hand. This must have been frightening for both of you. It was. Eloise has been so healthy. Neither of us expected this. The ER doctor came into the room. Dr. Brodie, good to see you. He turned to Eloise and her husband. You were lucky. Im pretty certain this was an anxiety attack. But within the next few weeks I want you to make an appointment to see a cardiac specialist for a more complete workup. Just to be on the safe side. Is there something going on youre worried about? Our youngest daughter is in Wyoming. Shes having her first baby. Shes had problems with her blood pressure. Momma hereEloises husband nodded at heris a bit of a worrier. Well, Im going to start you on some mild medication. I want you to see the specialist within the next month or sooner if you have another episode. Also, no work this week. Go home and rest. Next week Dr. Brodie will check you. If you feel all right and he says you can travel, then fly to visit your daughter. Seeing her might work better than any medicine. I agree. Eloise, just come in anytime a week from today, Rand said. Ill see you when you get there. Thanks, but I feel so bad. Dr. Neels is gone and now me. How will you manage? Ill do fine. Well, not fine. Ill miss you, but I can manage. Rand left and headed for the office. The doors opened at nine. Hed run upstairs to his apartment, eat some cereal, and call Chelsea. Maybe she knew of one of the cowboys wives that would like to make some extra money for a few weeks. He dialed Chelseas number as he climbed the stairs. He had twenty minutes before office hours.

Chelsea, this is Rand. Im in a fix. He explained about Eloise being ill and how hed be without help. Anyone who can deal with people and answer the phone would be fine. Im desperate. Ill see what I can do. If I find someone, Ill send them to town. If not, Ill call you back. Rand thanked her and hung up. A quick breakfast, and then he was going to have a very busy day. **** Marian had tucked a white cotton shirt into her jeans and pulled on a light-green sweater. She ran a comb through her shoulder-length hair and added pink lipstick for her only makeup. Hearing a knock on the door, she strode out of the bedroom and across the small living area. Chelsea, youre early. Are you all right? Im fine. Lets walk back toward my house while we talk. You look excited. Whats up? Marian asked as she shut the door and matched Chelseas long strides. In a minute they were back in the big house. Ill pour our coffee. Sit. Puzzled, Marian did as she said. Chelsea sat a cup of coffee, a piece of coffee cake, and a banana in front of Marian. Eat up. You are going to have a busy day. Rand called. Hes in a pinch. His secretary had some type of anxiety attack earlier today. They thought it was her heart at first. Anyway, shes going to be out for several weeks to a month. He needs help right now until he can find a replacement. You are the answer to his prayers. Im not sure thats true. No matter. This is your chance to impress him with your charm and your beauty. Marriage has made you bonkers. Beauty? Did you see his fiance? Shes way out of my class in the beautiful department. But I dont mind helping. In fact, her heart rate had increased from hearing his name. This might be the best opportunity for them to become better acquainted. But she risked putting her heart out to be trampled on. Hell, shed taken bigger chances on men who were nowhere near his caliber. When does he need me?

At nine oclock. Marian laughed. How do I get there? Im late already. Ill drive you. The least Rand can do is bring you home. You werent expecting me to resist. I knew my friend wasnt stupid. She grinned. Go show that cowboy what youre made of. Youre being a matchmaker again. I cant help it. Marian finished her coffee, cake, and banana. Chelsea hurried her out to the car and had her on the way to her temporary job. Looks like the doctor is busy, Chelsea said as she dropped Marian off at the front door. Have fun. She waved then drove back toward home. Marian stopped inside the door. The room was packed. Two children were fighting, and a baby cried. The phone was ringing, and Rand was nowhere in sight. She walked into the room to the reception desk. Six people had signed their names and time of appointment. Marian answered the ringing phone. Good morning, Dr. Brodies office. You need to cancel? No problem. Yes, you can call back later to make another appointment. One less for today. She put down the receiver. She glanced at the tired-looking mother with two boys arguing and a baby crying. The young woman looked ready to cry herself. Is there any way I can help? The young mother looked at her like she was a life raft thrown to save her. Her bottle needs to be warmed, and theyre thirsty and tired. She motioned to the boys. Come back here. Well warm her bottle and see what we can find for the boys. Once the children quieted, the anxiety in the air floated to the ground. Marian almost saw the other patients taking a deep breath and relaxing. Rand came out of an exam room and darted into the reception area. He came to a halt when he saw Marian.

What are you doing here? Rand asked. If he hadnt looked so confused, and cute, in his doctors white coat, Marian would have loved to tease him. I heard you needed help. Youve already created a miracle. Peace and quiet. Take this lady and her children next. Im certain the other patients wont mind. Marian grinned when the others frantically nodded their heads to reassure Rand it was all right. The rest of the morning went fast. At one oclock, Marian saw the last patient out. Wow, you were a lifesaver. Ill buy you lunch at the world-famous Hamburger Bar down the street. Let me put my white coat on a hanger. We can walk and enjoy the fresh air. Marian straightened the waiting room then washed her hands and got her purse. Rand met her at the front door. He glanced around the room. It looks nice. Thanks. They strolled along the sidewalk. Everyone they met stopped them to ask him about his receptionist and about how he was managing. Each time, Rand introduced Marian and explained, This is Marian Gaenor, a friend of Chelseas. She was a big help this morning. The locals looked her up and down and thanked her for being willing to work on her vacation. I love it. Its different from being in New York. You have beautiful country and nice people here in Montana, Marian said. Finally they got to the diner and were seated. Rand stretched. You still have patients to see this afternoon? Yes. Two at the hospital. Then Im going to check on Mr. Nettles. Maybe youd like to ride along? Absolutely. I find this all very exciting and interesting. After New York, Frontier City is exciting? I live a dull life. I go to work and back home to a small apartment. Especially dull since my best friend married and left me alone.

Rand shook his head. Youre a strange lady, Marian. My mother said that all the time I was growing up. You are strange, my darling girl. She made him laugh, and his shoulders relaxed. She picked up her menu. The scent of food floating in the air made her hungry. They ordered hamburgers. The waitress brought them and hot fries to the table. She topped off their cola and went to serve another customer. Marian bit into the hamburger. Ah, if I die now, I dont care. This is heaven. I gather you dont eat many of these. Nope. Too much fat for my arteries and more importantly for my hips. I dont remember a problem with your hips. Rand grinned and deliberately looked under the table at her hips. When he looked up, her breath caught. Desire had made his eyes look like molten silver. I want to make love to you, he said in a soft voice. And I will, today or tomorrow or the next. But sooner or later, Im going to have you. And it wont be on the rebound. Her heart thumped in her chest, and her lower abdomen tightened. Hed picked up his hamburger and taken a bite. No one looking at them would ever guess what hed said. After a couple more bites and a long drink of soda, he smiled at her. Whens it going to be? Marian hesitated. She so wanted to say yes, and yet her rational mind scowled at her. No, no, no. Its too soon. Ill go home with a broken heart. But hes so nice and so delectable. His sexy smile melted what little resistance she had. It had been a long dry spell since anyone affected her like Rand did. She didnt think her body had responded this much to any other man. It was worth the gamble. She took a deep breath and jumped off the deep end. Would I be considered fast if I invited you to my place tonight? A slow smile spread across his face. Id think you were being cruel if you made me wait any longer. Im never cruel.

He paid the bill. Well drive to the hospital, then see the Nettles, and lastly check out your cabin. Rand opened the door and put his hand at the small of her back during the walk to his car. Frontier Hospital sat on the outskirts of the small town. We get patients from all over the county, Rand explained when Marian was surprised at the size and newness. They built this about five years ago and have already added an extra wing. She stood beside the nurses station while he checked his two patients. The nurses gave her the once-over. Are you his fiance? one of them asked. No. Im Chelsea Brodies friend. I just offered to help in the office today. Rand walked up behind the nurse. I heard your question. To clue in the curious, Im no longer engaged. I know this will heat up the gossip lines for days to come. We dont gossip. Were just interested in the welfare of our residents, the nurse protested and smiled. Whatever you call it. Im used to the gossip circle. Remember I grew up very close to here. Come on, Marian. We have a house call to make. Rand escorted her out of the hospital. His hand touching her back kept her thoughts on later this evening. Did your receptionist go to the hospital and on house calls with you? Marian asked as he held the car door open for her. No. She worked a half day and went home. Are you complaining? Yes. I might need a raise. Friday night you can take me out for a fancy dinner. He waited while she settled in the seat before going around to the drivers side. Its a bargain. But tonight well pick up a pizza. I want to get to dessert quickly. Hmmm, I always liked dessert best. She winked at him.

Chapter Six

Visiting the Nettles had gone well. The pizza they bought scented the truck with the wonderful fragrance of warm bread and melted cheese. Marian called to reassure Chelsea that Rand was bringing her home and they were having dinner at the cabin. Marian opened the front door, and Rand followed, carrying the pizza. On the table was a chocolate cake, a tall pitcher of iced tea, and an unlit candle. A small note read, Have Fun. Rand put the pizza on the counter, and Marian stuck the tea in the fridge. They looked at each other. She wet her lips, and Rands eyes darkened. I suppose we must be civilized and eat first. The pizza is hot. But then Im not very hungry. He walked toward her. What do you think? he asked as he reached her. Shall we start with dessert? His fingers undid her first button. Perhaps if we took care of this other hunger first, we might be more ready to eat. Rising on her tiptoes, Marian brushed her lips across his sensual mouth. Her breasts touched his hard chest. Rand, I do like your idea. He scooped her into his arms and took long strides into the one bedroom. Rand let her body slide against his until her feet touched the carpet. His fingers ran through her hair, and he sniffed her hair and neck. I love your fragrance. Light, sweet, alluring to a starving man. His lips on her neck sent heat down her body, settling in her core. Had it only been yesterday that shed resolved not to get involved with him? But he was temptation walking around inside long, lean legs, a muscular body, and a smile that melted all resistance. Hed woken something inside her at the wedding, and the feeling had increased by the hour since her arrival. Her fingers traced around his dark eyebrows, across the line of his nose, and brushed over his sexy lips. Her body bent into his, and his hard cock pressed into her abdomen. Rand nuzzled her neck. He kissed the sensitive spot behind her ear. She leaned her head back, giving him greater access. Shivers of delight zipped along her body. Lets get rid of these clothes. Rand finished unbuttoning her blouse then unfastened her bra. He threw both items toward a chair. When his warm hands cupped her breasts, Marian moaned. He kissed each rosy nipple. His teeth teased the tips. Desire surged like a wildfire out of control. She unsnapped his shirt and let it fall. Her hands ran across his wide chest. Soft brown hair arrowed down to below his belt buckle. She took her

time kissing his chest and rubbing her fingertips across his nipples. His fingers ran through her hair as she touched him. She continued downward, kissing all along his hard six-pack. Then she undid his buckle and unzipped his jeans. Marian gasped as his firm, smooth cock almost jumped into her hand. The pearl of salty essence gleamed on the crown of his dick. Rand groaned when she licked it off. He sat on the side of the bed. Marian licked across the crown again before taking him deep into her mouth. Her hand gently held his balls while she moved her head up and down. Her tongue licked along the bottom of his cock and around, but then Rand stopped her. Were going to take it slow and easy. Any more of that wonderful attention and Ill be through. He removed his boots and pushed his jeans the rest of the way off. From one of his jeans pockets he pulled out a condom and sheathed his dick. Marian had sat on the bed. She admired his naked, tall, muscular body, wide shoulders, and chest tapering down to a flat stomach, lean hips, and long legs. He stepped in front of her. Like what you see? She reached out and ran her hands down his legs and then back up. Her fingers traced around his cock. Her breath blew across the crown. Rand lifted her to the center of the bed. I want to see your whole body. He unsnapped her jeans and, in one move, pulled them and her panties down. He stopped to yank her boots off and then the pants. Feeling vulnerable, Marian put her hands across her body. Rand pulled them away. Surely youre not bashful. His lopsided smile had her heart racing and her pussy clenching tight. A little shy. Everyone who lives in New York is not one of the party girls. Rand had been straddling her, and now he moved to her side. Is that how you think I see you? She swallowed around a lump in her throat. You ended your engagement yesterday. I doubt youre looking for another serious relationship. Its all right. I decided last night I want to make love with you. Then I dont have to stop? Absolutely not. She rose up and kissed his mouth. Im ready for my dessert. Why get into a deep conversation right in the middle of what promised to be the best sex shed had in years? But his comment had almost brought it all spilling out.

This was the last short-term relationship for her. She wanted to find someone who had the same dream as hers, a family and a home. Rands mouth covered her breast and sucked, bringing her full attention back to him. He teased her other nipple with his fingers. Desire shot straight to her core, making her pussy ache for him to fill her. She moved restlessly. He sat back and grinned at her. What a feast. I love your lush curves and those soft, sweet breasts. His hands roamed along the sides of her body. Leaning forward, he whispered, You are one hot lady. Marian was sure her whole body flushed. He slid farther down and breathed in the scent of her wet curls covering her pussy. Shed hoped hed thrust his hard cock into her, but he continued moving down her body. He kissed the inside of her leg and the sensitive area behind her knee. When he got to her feet, he caressed each one. His leisurely exploration increased her craving to have him deep inside her pussy. Take me, she said, hoping to encourage him to move faster. This is our first time. Im going to be sure its memorable. If your damn beeper goes off before you make it memorable, Im going to hit you. Be quiet, love. When you say that out loud, it might make it happen. Then hurry. Ignoring her, he kissed her toes, her instep, back up her leg, and around her pelvic area. Her tension ratcheted higher the longer he took to touch her in her most sensitive spot. Finally he spread her legs wider, and his finger went between her pussy lips to uncover her clit. What have we here? He licked his tongue lightly across the swollen nub. Marians hips came off the bed. Yes, yes. He licked along her lower lips to her pussy opening and flicked his tongue inside while his fingers lightly pinched her tight nipples. Marian yelled out his name. Her fingers dug into his hair, holding his face close to her as his mouth fueled her desire into a roaring fire rushing through her body.

Rand raised his head. The handsome features of his face were covered in shadows. But she saw the stark glow of his hunger reflected in his silvery-blue eyes, more silver at this moment. He positioned his hard cock at her opening and very slowly moved inside her tight pussy. She grabbed his ass, raised her hips, and drew him farther in. Youre toying with me. But its so much fun. Your face is beautiful with your desire shining in your eyes. Watching her intently, he took hold of her hips and plunged in to the hilt with his sac against her buttocks. Damn, youre tight. It feels so good. She wiggled and clenched her pussy tighter around his large cock. He pulsed against her inner walls. Shivers of pleasure began to roll over her. Rand moved in and out quicker. Soon she met his every stroke. Her heart beat so hard she expected it to burst out of her chest at any moment. He brought her almost to the peak and slowed, then went faster again. When her orgasm hit, it took her breath. Stars swam in front of her eyes. She grabbed him tightly as the only stability in a world exploding in joyous rapture. Shortly afterward, she heard him shout. His arms clamped tighter around her as his cock pulsed against the sides of her pussy. Gradually her breathing slowed. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Did I hurt you? Rand anxiously asked. If it felt any better, youd have killed me. She tried to smile. Sorry about the tears. It was just sooverwhelming. He brushed his lips across her mouth and licked the tears from her cheeks. I know. You are incredibly warm and soft and giving. He held her close for a few more minutes. I hate to, but Id better get dressed. In case I get a call. He grabbed his clothes and headed to the bathroom. Marian dressed. She was embarrassed shed cried. Shed never had that reaction before. She hurried into the kitchen and heated the pizza. Rand came out of the bedroom and sat to pull on his boots. When he stood, he walked closer to her. I thought wed better eat. I wouldnt want you to have to work tonight on an empty stomach. Marian felt the tension in the air around them. A slight frown marred his handsome face. I have to be honest. Im not looking for anything serious. Not for a long time. I want to be free for a while. Im afraid we may be in different places in our lives. He bent his head and kissed

her. Im sorry. Id still like to date and have a good time together during your vacation. If you agree. Youre a real sweet lady. She forced herself to smile. Thats what Im going to have engraved on my tombstone. She was a real sweet lady. He grinned. I love your zany sense of humor. Lets eat. We can still be friends, but I think Ill skip the casual dating. Marian went to the stove. Open the bottle of wine. Ive warmed the pizza. And we cant waste that delicious chocolate cake. Rand studied her for a moment. Well definitely be friends. The pizza was good. In spite of her disappointment and letdown, Marian ate. A few glasses of wine helped relax her. As usual, Rand didnt drink for fear of getting called out. If you dont mind, Ill take a slice of the chocolate cake with me. Im pretty tired. Tomorrow will be another busy day. Do you want me to help out again? Just the morning. I want to spend more time with Chelsea. Id really appreciate it. Ill pay you. Forget it. Im enjoying myself. Well see how you feel after a few days. Although he tried to protest, she sent half the cake with him. Then she stood at the door and watched his truck until the red taillights went out of sight. She was mad partly at herself and partly at him, but mostly she was sad. No more sex because she was starving for attention or it was just fun. Shed never wanted that. It had taken her a while to realize that the men in her life werent looking for what she wanted. So shed stopped having sexual relationships. Shed had nothing but casual movie or dinner dates for the past year. Rand was different. After thinking about it last night, shed resigned herself to having a good time and not taking him seriously. But her bodys reaction to him scared her. She knew, for her, he would never be just a casual date. Her heart was in serious danger, and then he had made his comment.

Marian curled up in a soft chair and sipped on another glass of wine. Tears welled in her eyes. Shed have a good pity cry and go to bed. She had committed herself to work with him. Whether that had been a good move or not, shed know soon enough. **** The office phone rang. Dr. Brodies office, Marian said. You sound so professional. Look, Im feeling good. So I thought wed go to Wagon Wheel for the rest of the afternoon. Its bigger than Frontier City. They have a movie theater. We can have a real girls day out. Ill be through here in about thirty minutes. Ill pick you up. Rand had walked up behind her. She sensed anytime he was close. Are you going out with Chelsea? Remember, tonight Im paying you with a fancy dinner. Yes, were going to Wagon Wheel. Itll be fun. I dont know when well get back. You dont have to pay me with dinner. I was teasing. I insist. If not tonight, then tomorrow. Thanks for all your help this week. I dont keep the office open on the weekend, but can you fill in next week, too? Eloise hopefully will be back after that. Hed treated her like an employee all week since the night hed left her cabin. He was pleasant, smiled, and was appreciative of her work, but nothing personal slipped through. Her heart ached. Could she handle another week? Of course, she couldnt resist being here with him. Talk about being a weakling, that was her. Her annoyance must have shown. Sorry I asked. Of course not. This is your vacation. No, no, I was thinking of something else. Id be glad to help. I love the work. For the first time in a week, he gave her that special smile, and her knees went weak. She handed him the last chart. See Mr. Mullins and youll be finished with office visits. Rand nodded. Ill call you in the morning about the dinner tomorrow night. He leaned his head around the reception window and called his patient back. He closed the exam room door, stopping any further protest. Marian rushed to straighten her desk and the waiting room. A girls day out was just what she needed.

**** Chelsea chattered on in the background while Marian sat back and enjoyed the drive. She couldnt decide whether to relent and go out with Rand tomorrow. She was pretty sure where theyd end up. Her determination wasnt very strong. She stared out at the ranches and farms as the car sped along the highway. Gradually her body relaxed. You know, I have to admit if you werent such a good friend, Id hate you, Marian said. Really? Youre that serious about wanting to settle down and give up your career? This week has been an eye-opener for me. I love working in a doctors office. A small one where you do lots of things. Rand taught me how to take temperatures, pulses, and do blood pressures. If were real busy, I fill the rooms, ask whats wrong, and take their vitals. I love those days. Its been forever since Ive been excited about work. In fact, I dont think I ever was this excited. Maybe the medical gene in your family was there all the time and just came out. After all, two of your brothers are doctors, and your sister is a nurse. Could be. I think I may take a medical assistant's course. Then work for a doctor and see if I want to go further. We have to celebrate your new direction. Chelsea slowed down as they entered town. I know a place that has great sandwiches and wonderful pies. Its right along Main Street. Let me see. There it is, Sweet and Sour, stands for her two most popular items, coconut pie and a Reuben sandwich. Im starving. Find a place to park. It took several trips around the downtown blocks before they caught someone pulling out right close to the restaurant. Luckily one of the two tables left was by the windows. Our lucky day, Chelsea said. She and Marian followed the waitress. Once seated, Chelsea handed her a slip of paper. Heres the movies and the times. You get to choose. These arent too current. When you live out in the far reaches of Montana, it takes a longer time for them to get here. I always loved Pride and Prejudice. Do you mind seeing it again?

Weve watched your DVD at least four times, but not lately. Id love to see it a final fifth time. Chelsea grinned. I love Darcy, too. Im a sucker for tall, handsome men, Marian said. Want to tell me what happened between you two? Marian started to respond but stopped. Even though she and Chelsea were best friends, she didnt want to go over what occurred earlier in the week. The feelings were still too raw. On one level shed known he didnt want to get serious, but deeper she had had hope hed feel differently for her. Silly girl, it never works that way, at least not in my life. Nope, not yet, she said in answer to Chelseas question. Lets have a good day. No sad stories. The waitress sat their tea and sandwiches down in front of them. Oh, my, goodness. Marian stared at the huge stacked Reuben. Ill need a knife and a box. Half of this is going home. I brought my cooler. Itll keep the pie and sandwich from spoiling. I put in lots of ice. Dirk said I couldnt come home unless I bring a whole pie with me. Great. Let me see if I can open my mouth wide enough to eat this half. Give me a break. Ive seen how wide your mouth can go when you holler at someone, Chelsea said. I never holler. You do, and then youre embarrassed and practically give the person you were dressing down a promotion. But I admit its very rare. Chelsea grinned at Marian. Youre blushing. You know I was teasing. To change the subject, I told you something important on the drive here. You never heard me. My thoughts were on someone else. You know who. I do, so youre forgiven. Did I tell you I had a second sonogram this week? No, why? Ive gained more weight than usual for the length of my pregnancy. In fact, my weight has jumped up this past month. I thought maybe you were further along than you thought.

Ah, so you did notice. Well, Id never ask why you were getting so fat. Marian grinned. What were the results? Were having twins. What? Marian shouted. You sound like me at the doctors office. I called my mom. She said there had been twins in the family a long time ago, and apparently Dirk forgot to mention his twin aunts. That is really a surprise. How do you feel? Totally shocked, overwhelmed, and excited. Dirk assures me well have plenty of help and manage. His mother is deliriously happy. Shell be able to teach me all I need to know. And Im going to need all the assistance I can get in spite of Dirks reassurances. The thought of twins both scares me and excites me. I can help. Here goes more vacation to come to Montana. Ill be an adopted aunt. Yes, you need a job here. Ill want my best friend close by. Im not sure about moving. Lets not plan that yet. Its time for our movie, Marian said, changing the subject. This is my treat." Marian paid the bill, and they walked to the theater. It wasnt far, and parking places were at a premium. Arms full of popcorn and drinks, they headed in to see the show. Afterwards, they went shopping. Marian found a lovely gold sweater. She ran her hand across the soft knit. You must buy it. Were having a barn dance next Saturday night at the ranch. Itll be perfect and keep you warm. The barns pretty cold this time of year. This will be our last dance until late, late spring or early summer. All right, I will. The price is reasonable. Marian offered to drive, but Chelsea told her to sit back and relax. This is the most chilled out Ive seen you in a long time. Maybe this vacation is good for you after all. I was worried whatever misunderstanding you and Rand had had ruined it for you. No. The job has helped. And next weekend I might meet another handsome cowboy. Thats the idea. Make him jealous.

Whoa, Chelsea. I appreciate you wanting me to have a good man and marriage, but please, no more trying to fix me up or trick Rand into spending time with me. She turned toward her friend. Were in different places in our lives. He wants to play the field, have a good time, no commitments. I want a husband, a home, to have babies. You two actually talked about what you want? Sort of, and not at the best time. I wont ask what that means. But I will back off. Knowing you like I do, I wanted to see you happy like me. You really dont want to stay in New York, do you? Not a bit. Being here has helped clear my head. Im changing my life. Perhaps Ill return to North Carolina. My mother would be overjoyed. Im the only one who moved more than fifty miles away. This is happening fast. You might want to wait until youve been back at your job a few months. Then see if you still want to move. It wasnt a fast decision. Ive been thinking about doing something different, somewhere different for the last six months. Visiting Chelsea, meeting Rand, and seeing how it was to live in a small town like Frontier City had made Marian realize what she really wanted. She wanted it with Rand, but he wasnt available. There had to be another good, handsome man whod excite her body and make her dreams come true. She would not admit defeat. A year from now I am going to have a husband, a job I like, and hopefully be starting a family. But Ill probably have to leave Frontier City to find him.

Chapter Seven Chelsea left Marian at the cabin. Sure you dont want to join us later? Thanks, but Im tired. See you tomorrow. Marian had barely put on her lights when the phone rang. Hello. Youre back. Rands deep voice vibrated from her ear down her body. I wondered if you were too tired to go for a ride. Unless youd rather do a late dinner tonight.

Id like the ride. Ill be right there. The phone went dead. She rushed to shower and changed into casual slacks and a white sweater. Shed save the gold one for the dance. The truck door slammed as she finished combing her hair out. A spritz of perfume and she was ready at his knock. Her mind told her she was a fool. But her body didnt listen. When she opened the door, Rand stepped inside and pulled her to him. He kissed her mouth like a thirsty man taking his first drink in a long time. His tongue tangled with hers as his fingers slid through her hair. He pulled back and looked down into her face. Ive been over her for months. Honestly. I was letting her get used to the idea of the breakup. No one has aroused me like you do. Not for years, if ever. I dont know where this will go, but its driving me crazy seeing you every day and wanting to touch you. I want to smell your hair, touch your soft skin, and sink into your hot, sweet pussy. Will you take a chance on us? Was she dreaming, or did he really want them to have a relationship? She knew it was too soon. If she was smart, shed push him away. But his warm, sensuous smile curled her toes, and her body wanted to stay cuddled against his hard frame. All her thoughts from earlier today flew out of her mind. She didnt want to resist him. For an answer to his question, she brought his head back down and kissed his lips, along his neck, and at the curve between neck and shoulder. Your pulse is beating fast. She glanced at his face. Rand smiled. I expect its going to beat much faster before tonight is over. I hope so. But first were going on that ride. Well date and do this right. Be still, my beating heart. The doctor may be a romantic. His laugh, and the arm he put around her waist to escort her to his truck, warmed her heart. I have a blanket in the backseat and a cooler full of soft drinks. In case we find a good place to stop. Do you mind? What are you waiting for, doctor? Lets go. He swooped her into his arms and onto the passenger seat, kissed the tip of her nose, and went around to get in.

Marian glanced at the star-studded sky. If this is dream, she whispered, dont wake me. A night sky full of stars and a handsome cowboy who made her heart race, what more could a woman ask for? Marian glanced at Rand as he drove through town and went on following the two-lane highway south. Im thinking of buying some property and building a house, he explained. Yesterday after work, our local realtor showed me several properties. I thought you might enjoy seeing my two favorites. Sounds like fun. What do you like best about each one? Good question. Let me see. The first one youre going to see has more flat land but a nice stream toward the back of the property. Its about five acres bigger. Farther down the road, we turn east and drive about five miles then turn south again. The last place has more trees and is a little hilly but still has flat grazing land. Near where Id build the house is a small stream that meanders through the property. Rand slowed and turned onto a two-lane dirt road. This is the first property. An almost-full moon shone across the vast prairie. They stopped, and Marian got out. Would you raise cattle? A few and two or three horses. I wont have time for keeping up with too many animals. This is the closest to your office. Yes, but in the afternoon I could be anywhere in the county. Rand took her hand and led her around the area near the car. You cant tell as much at night, but Id probably build the house a little farther on and off to the side of the road. Id definitely put up a fence whether I had cattle or not. What do you think? I like the wide-open spaces. The few trees are at the end of the property around the stream. You can see some big bushes and thick vegetation in spots. Come on and Ill show you the next place. When they got to the truck door, Rand didnt immediately open it. He leaned his body against hers with her back touching the cool metal door. Leaning down, his lips softly touched hers. Youre even more lovely by moonlight. Your hair glows. He sniffed some strands he held in his hand. Sweet, all of you is sweet, from your head to the scent of your arousal.

Marian put her arms around his neck and rubbed her breasts across his hard chest. Her lips nuzzled his neck, and he pressed against her abdomen, letting her feel his aroused cock. Rand stepped back. Wed better stop. I really want you to see this next property before we play. She pretended to pout. Spoilsport. Rand opened the door and lifted her inside. Anticipation only makes the desire more intense, he whispered in her ear. They rode on. After he made the second turn, the land changed. Trees lined the road, and they drove over small hills. After about thirty minutes, Rand turned again onto another two-lane road, but this one had been paved. Trees initially blocked the view. Then they arrived at an open area with a vast panoramic scene of the prairie and far mountains. The land sloped gently before it flattened out. A silver stream shone in the moonlight, and trees clustered at the edge. Well drive to the stream and stop there for a few minutes, Rand said. They got back in the truck, and he carefully maneuvered across the prairie. I drove along here yesterday and didnt see any significant holes, but its best to be careful. He stopped near the trees, got out, and reached in the back for two blankets. Marian shivered. Its cold. We wont be able to stay long. Wheres your spirit of adventure? I dont have one, and I dont like to be cold. Thats the first time Ive heard you complain. I guess Ill have to admit this larger blanket is actually a sleeping bag. First, I put down the real blanket, then we get into the other and zip it up for warmth. She looked at him skeptically. Well see how that works. I have a perfectly good bed at the cabin. Rand ignored her and arranged things as hed said. He pulled two big thermal cups out of the cooler. I lied. This is hot chocolate. My hero. Marian grabbed a cup and took a long swallow. Wonderful. Well stay warmer in the sleeping bag if we take off our outer garments.

You are insane. No way. He laughed and caught her arm just before she ran. You first. Holding one arm, he managed to get her sweater off and then quickly her slacks. Get in the bag. He held her clothes away from her. I will. And when you get in Im going to hit you. Rand chuckled. Drink your hot chocolate. In minutes he was undressed, had sheathed his cock, and got all the way into the sleeping bag with her. See, our body heat will keep us warm. He sat her cup on the ground and pulled her close against him. Marian hated to admit it, but she was quite toasty. Rand reached around and unfastened her bra then slipped her panties down. He pulled her against his chest and wrapped his legs around hers. Every time she took a breath, his musky scent filled her lungs. His hard cock pulsed against her abdomen as he began to ravish her mouth. His tongue sensually stroked the inner walls and her tongue. A shiver of delight shook Marian. Are you cold? No. He moved down and raked his teeth across her pebbled nipples then his mouth suckled each breast. An all-consuming desire sent heat soaring in every vein. His hands and mouth explored every spot of her chest and abdomen. When his fingers ran across the length of her lower lips and sank into her pussy, she moved her hips to encourage him. He found and touched her sensitive spot. Her body exploded with pleasure. She screamed his name as he moved his cock into position and plunged into her wet pussy. His mouth sucked on her breast as he began to slowly go in and out. She raised her hips, taking him in deeper. Rand stopped for a moment. His eyes shone silver, and his face was taut with his desire. She clenched and unclenched her inner pussy walls around his wide, hard cock. Dont stop now, she pleaded. No way, but I want to see your face when you come. He started moving fast and hard. A swell of euphoria swept through her hot body. She closed her eyes, and her body trembled with joy as her orgasm overtook her. Oh, sweetheart, Rand groaned at the end.

They lay panting and sweaty. Their hearts pounded together. Rand tried to move partially off of her. I think we inaugurated this property, he said. Ill never look at this place and not think of us. He and Marian cuddled and watched the leaves flutter in the slight breeze. Stars twinkled in the dark. Id better help you dress before you get cold and take you home. Marian squirmed around and got her panties and bra on without help. Then Rand reached for her sweater and helped her get it over her head. I think the slacks will go on quicker with you out of the sleeping bag. He unzipped the zipper, handed her slacks to her, and jumped into his clothes. Its cold out here. Finally you agree. Marian took a swallow of her chocolate drink and gave Rands to him. Theyre not very warm. Rand put his arm around her waist and headed to the truck. Get in and put on the heater while I put all our stuff in the backseat. It didnt take long for the truck to get nice and toasty. Rand shook out the bag and blanket, folded them, and grabbed the small cooler. Soon he had them on the way back to the cabin. Ill drop you off and head home to get some sleep tonight. Tomorrow evening dress up for a fancy dinner. Well go into Wagon Wheel. Im looking forward to it. Im going to be an expensive date. I plan on being hungry. I think I can afford you. Which property did you like best? Theyre both nice. You have to decide. Itll be your house. The first one is closer to town. Im leaning toward the second property. I like the trees and that some of the land isnt so flat. Of course now it also has a fantastic memory for me. Whoever you marry might not like to know about that memory. Well see. He kissed her good night in the truck and waved after she was safe inside. Marian locked the door and went into the bathroom to shower. Warm water soothed all her muscles from the activity on the hard ground. She smiled, remembering. She was getting in deeper each time they

were together. But she couldnt or didnt want to stop herself. If he let her leave, shed manage somehow. **** Rand let himself in to his apartment. He was bone tired but happy. He and Marian fit together like a pair of gloves. And although she had been reluctant at first, because of the cold, she had followed his lead, and theyd had great sex. Hed shower and go to bed. Dr. Neels was taking call this weekend, so Rand planned to make the most of it. Hed stop by tomorrow to see his mother. Shed give him good advice about the property. Then in the evening, hed have dinner with Marian. When he sank into bed, he found he was wide awake. In the last three months or so, his life had completely changed. He hadnt taken the time or had the time to think about how he really felt. The work was demanding, interesting, and he loved it. Being close to family had been an extra plus to the job. Breaking his engagement had taken longer than he wanted, but it was over. Rand tossed around on the bed and tried to shut off his mind. He slept fitfully. Thank goodness it wasnt a work day. Finally he gave up, pulled on his jeans, and went to the kitchen. The first rays of dawn streaked across the sky. He made coffee and poured a cup. Hed taken the first sip when his phone rang. Hello. Youre awake, good, Andy said. Do you know the time? Are you all right? Im great. Im letting you know Ill be in Frontier around noon. Ill be glad to see you. Are you ready to go to work?" Im all set. I spent some time with my parents. They have mixed emotions about my big move, but they want me to be happy. I can start Monday. Can I bunk with you until I find a place? Sure. You know what this means? No, what? Soon well be sharing call, and I can have a social life. Im looking forward to being a country doctor. See you around noon. Andy hung up.

Rand paced the small apartment. He wanted to get the land bought and the house built. But with winter weather coming, it probably wouldnt be started before spring. He could hardly wait to have lots of space in his home and outside. Marian flashed in his minds eye. Her light-blonde hair and sherry eyes, lush curves, and sweet fragrance had his desire spiking whenever they were together. He had to touch her, smell her hair, sink into her hot, tight pussy. Hed thought after making love again the intense desire might cool. It hadnt. She wanted permanency. He doubted hed be ready to propose to anyone for a long time. After just having missed making a major mistake, he was shy of getting too involved too soon. But what if he passed up the right woman? That would be stupid. The mistake with Anna was his fault. Hed ignored all the warning signs that they werent compatible. Hed chosen to follow her lead in the direction of their careers and where theyd live. Marian and Anna had nothing in common. Still, he needed time. A few weeks werent enough.

Chapter Eight Youve found two good parcels of land, Rands mom said as he drove her home. My only concern is, have you been on the job long enough to know for certain it will be your lifes work? I love having you close, but doctoring in the country is difficult and challenging. You dont need the money. Your inheritance has grown, as all of ours have, thanks to Clay. Still, youd make much more in a big city. Mom, Im sure. She studied him for a minute. You were always that way. Once you made up your mind you didnt change it. You have an innate way of knowing whats best for you. Well, except for women. Im not sure what you were thinking when you proposed to Anna. A nice lady but not the right one for you. You werent sorry I ended the engagement? Rand grinned at her. Not one iota. Choose more carefully the next time. Dad said he fell in love with you the first time you smiled at him.

She smiled and patted his arm. He did, and I did. We immediately knew we were the one for each other. That can be dangerous. You dont really know someone that fast, but it worked for us. So I ought to take my time and play the field? Andy suggested that. You date until you find the one you cant forget. It might take a week, six months, a year, or more. Rand parked and turned in the seat to face his mother. Thanks for going with me to see the places and for the advice. She started to get out. By the way, I heard you had a new helper last week. How is Eloise and the new receptionist? Eloise will be in next week for me to check her. Then shes going to visit her pregnant daughter. Shell be out for a while. And your assistant? Is temporary. Marian offered to help. Does she do a good job? I hate to admit it, but better than Eloise. She has a way with people. She takes her time with them. Plus, she doesnt get excited or faint at the sight of blood. Several patients have complimented her to me. My, how nice. Shed make a doctor a good wife. His mom got out of the car, waved without turning, and went up the steps. Had Mom just put her stamp of approval on Marian? What she said surprised him. Hed never known her to interfere in any way with her adult childrens decisions. He glanced at his watch. It was eleven. Hed better get back to his apartment. Andy had probably arrived. A medium-size moving van had parked behind the office. Andy swung out of the drivers seat. Good timing. Ive been here ten minutes. You are serious? Everything you own must be in that truck. It is. Why make two trips?

The nearest place to return the truck and store your stuff is in Wagon Wheel. Youll have to get out what you want to keep here and then drive to Wagon Wheel. It takes about forty-five minutes. Rand looked at his watch. Im going upstairs to call Dr. Neels. We talked about you, but I didnt realize how soon youd arrive. Start picking out the things you want to keep in the apartment. Dr. Neels was pleased Andy had arrived so quickly. He invited them to come tomorrow for Sunday dinner. They could visit and make plans. Rand saw time slipping away as they unpacked the items on the truck that Andy didnt want to store. The living room was filled with boxes. He slipped into his bedroom to call Marian. Hi, she said. Hows your day going? Not as I expected. He told her about Andys unexpected arrival. We have to get the truck and the rest of his stuff to Wagon Wheel by five. Is it all right with you if we change our dinner date to seven and include Andy? Sure. But, we can cancel if you want. Oh, no. I want to see you. Seven it is then. His tension eased at her words. Had he expected her to have him jumping through hoops like Anna would have done? He had to quit comparing them. It wasnt fair to either, but Marian had a much easier way about her. Rand strolled into his crowded living room. Thats enough stuff. We need to get the truck and cargo taken care of so we can pick up my date for dinner. Were taking you with us. Not necessary. Threes a crowd. I can start unpacking these boxes. No, you need to eat. I want you two to get better acquainted. This doesnt sound like casual dating. Rand shrugged and headed down the outside steps. **** Marian put on casual brown slacks with a V-neck, taupe sweater. The long sleeves would help keep her warm and the ruffled front added a dressy look to the outfit. She pushed her ash-

blonde hair behind her ears and added antique gold medallion-shaped earrings. They werent too dressy and were a little sexy. Her nerves were on edge. Rand had mentioned Andy was his best friend, like another brother. She wanted to make a good impression on Andy and of course on Rand. They were on time. Shed touched up her lipstick, put on her perfume, and picked up her bag when they knocked. Good evening. She opened the door for them to come inside. We dont have time to visit. Our dinner reservation is for eight. Well just make it. Rand waited as she locked the door. You remember Andy. Yes. It was too bad you had to leave early. You missed a wonderful dinner. Which she didnt eat much of, Rand said. My family had her mesmerized. Andy smiled and nodded his head. That can happen the first time you meet them. He opened the front passenger-side door to assist her. Rand went around to drive, and Andy got in the backseat. The dinner was slow and leisurely. Marian regaled them with stories of Chelsea and her in New York. Wed meet at least once a month, eat a whole pizza, and drink a bottle of wine. With that inside you, you can solve the problems of the world. Then Andy began with funny stories that occurred during medical school. The time flew, and Marian was surprised it was nine thirty by the time they finished. Rand put his arm around her shoulders on the way out. If you two want, you can drop me off at the apartment. Im going to spend a good part of the night unpacking. I think well take you up on the offer, if its all right with Marian, Rand said. Fine with me. Her heart did a little dance. Shed thought hed take her home and leave. They werent far from the apartment. Andy waved at them on his way up the steps. Rand put his hand on Marians thigh as they drove toward the cabin. This was fun tonight. It was. You and Andy are different. Yet you complement each other.

We met the first day of college and were roommates all through those four years and then medical school. I know what you mean. Chelsea and I got introduced right after we started working for the same company. We just clicked. He parked the truck and pulled her into his arms. His mouth kissed her forehead, her cheeks, and then her mouth. I like your outfit. His finger traced the edge of the ruffled sweater. She trembled at his touch. Would I be pushing it if I asked to come in? Id be disappointed if you didnt. Rand came around and lifted her out of the truck. He held her tight in his arms as she reached out to unlock the front door. Once they were inside Rand kicked it shut. Lock it. Yes, Sir. He strode across the living area and went right into her bedroom, where he dumped her on the bed. Her boots came off first, then her pants. Her sweater and bikini panties were left. Rand stepped back and gave her a lusty look. All the curves, in all the right places. Leaning forward, he rubbed his nose across her lower abdomen. The fragrance of your desire is intoxicating. He pulled her upright. Her sweater and bra flew across the room. Then he removed her panties. There. Stepping away from the bed, he removed his clothes in a minute. He put a condom on the bedside table and lay on the bed beside her. His teeth nibbled at the edge of her earlobe, and his fingers rubbed across her tight nipples. Marian rolled her body snug against him. He stilled, letting her take the lead. Her fingers traced the shape of his face and the edge of his lips. She nibbled at the edge of his hard jaw. Lightly, her hands inspected his broad chest, pinched his nipples, raked along his tight abs. His skin was firm and had a woodsy scent with a touch of musk. When she reached for his fully erect cock, he flipped her under him. My turn. I wasnt through.

You were too slow. I want to taste you. He slid down her body and spread her legs wide. His fingers separated her folds. He licked from her clit to the opening to her pussy. Sweet as honey. Marian raised her hips and moaned. Pleasure spilled into every vein, rushing through her blood. His mouth continued to taste her essence as his fingers went into her pussy to find the hot spot that made her lower body throb. She raked her hands through his soft hair. She wanted him inside her and yet didnt want him to stop what he was doing. Her orgasm caught her by surprise. Her body tingled from her feet straight up to her head. She bucked under him as his tongue lashed across her clit. I cant take any more. Sure you can. His tongue flicked into her pussy opening. Her body exploded in a frenzy of delight. Rand raised up and positioned his cock at her opening. He quickly thrust into her with his hard cock, sending her into a higher twirl. She fought to catch her breath and held on to his strong body as the tide of her orgasm rushed at her all at once. Vaguely in the background, she heard Rand shout out his release. **** Rand fought to take air into his lungs. His orgasm had shook his whole body and felt like it came right through the top of his head. Marian cuddled against him. Her soft breath tickled his neck. She laid her hand on his chest and looked up at him. Wow, fireworks. Yeah. He didnt know what he wanted to say. Part of him wanted to jump up and shout. The other part wanted to run. This was too much, too soon. He had lots to do before he got serious. He rolled toward the bedside table and saw the condom. Damn, hed forgotten. Marian noticed him stiffen although hed tried to hide it. She smiled. No problem. Im on the pill, and Im sure, being a doctor, youve been very careful in the past. I have. Dont worry. So were good. But he saw the concern in her eyes. Shed felt his withdrawal from her before the condom came up. Look. Id better dress and go help Andy. We have to visit with Dr. Neels tomorrow.

I understand. Marian got out of bed and put on her robe. She went into the kitchen while he dressed. He kissed her briefly on his way out. Later. He waved and hurried to the truck. He felt like hed jumped off a cliff without a parachute. Andy took one look when he came in the door and got up and poured them both a bourbon. That bad, huh? I told you to keep it light. Shes a nice lady, but you need time to meet more of them. Right. I need to cool it. They worked another hour on the unpacking and stopped for the night. See you in the morning. Rand showered and lay in his bed. Hed done the right thing. They needed to cool it. But he wished he hadnt run out of the house. Hed probably hurt her feelings. But it was better now than later. Still, his chest hurt, and he didnt like himself much. He tossed and turned. At least Andy could help him in the office this week. No need to have Marian come in. Hed call her in a few days. **** Marian watched the lights of his truck fade in the distance. Shed given too much too quickly. Hed gotten scared. Shed seen it before to a certain extent, but this was different. Her feelings for him took over. She had let herself open to him in a way she hadnt to any other man. So the rejection hurt much worse. He hadnt mentioned her working for him next week. That was deliberate. Again, he was putting space between them. She got in the shower and let the tears flow. When she got out, shed made up her mind. No more tears. Shed go to that barn dance and meet some other cowboys. Shed spend more time with Chelsea. She would have a good vacation without Dr. Cant Make Up His Mind Brodie. But it was a long week. The lonely nights were the worst.

Chapter Nine Music spilled out of the barn into the night. Rand and Andy got out of the truck and joined the crowd headed inside. All the local people were arriving in droves. Many of them stopped to say hello to Rand and to meet the new doctor theyd heard about from this weeks patients. Andy had an easy way about him and had charmed most of the townspeople.

When they got inside, Rand glanced around the crowded room to look for Marian, trying not to be obvious. Andy had agreed Rand had done the best for both of them by cooling it. But the office didnt seem the same without her, and Rands body ached for her touch. There she is. Andy nodded his head toward the dance floor. Shes with a tall, blond man. Tom, he owns a large ranch to the north of town. Inherited it from his parents. They got killed in a car wreck about a year ago. Rand never thought he was the jealous type, but he wanted to walk across the dance floor and pull her out of Toms arms. They seemed to be having a spirited conversation. Marian was smiling. Ask someone to dance. A lot of the ladies are looking our way. Im going to. Andy strolled off toward a line of pretty ladies smiling at him. Feeling in the spotlight, Rand hurried to follow him. He danced with a number of different women. He didnt want to make the mistake of showing any partiality. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Marian dance by, mostly with Tom. She never once looked his way. About halfway through the dance, Rand couldnt stand it any longer. Purposefully, he strode toward where she stood with Dirk and Chelsea. Hi, everyone. How are you feeling, Chelsea? Much better. Hopefully, Im past all the morning sickness. Rand barely heard what Chelsea said. He was totally focused on Marian, her sweet face, her particular scent, and the ache of desire pulsing in his body. Its good to see you, Marian. May I have this dance? The country band had started to play a slow number. He noted her hesitation. Then she said yes, and his heart started to beat again. Rand put his arm around her waist and led her into the dance. You look beautiful. Thanks. Ive been meaning to call, but weve been busy orienting Andy to the office and the afternoon visits. He has a good sense of direction, so hes learning his way around fast. Thats good. Damn, she wasnt making it easy. She wouldnt make eye contact, and her short answers meant he had to keep talking. He pulled her closer to him and let the music flow over them. At first, she stiffened, but gradually her sweet curves fit against his body.

Ive missed you, he whispered in her ear. Chelsea and Ive had fun this week exploring the surrounding little towns. Did you buy your property? I did. And Im having a small cabin built. They can get it done quickly. Ill live there until my house is finished, probably sometime next summer. Andy will take the upstairs apartment. That will be nice for you both. Youll have your privacy. Right. I saw you dancing with Tom. Hes a nice guy. Yes, he is. They were back to short answers. Look, Im sorry about this past week. I really have been busy. No problem. She smiled. As I said, I had a great week. We were only casually dating anyway. No need to get too involved when Im leaving in a few weeks. The music ended. Thank you, Marian said. She turned and walked quickly to the side. Thank you, he mumbled and headed toward Andy, who was standing at the bar set up in the corner. Ill have a beer. I saw you dancing with Marian. You both looked miserable. What you need is to meet a local woman to date. Keep looking. Andy waved and walked toward a smiling blonde hed danced with earlier. Marian was dancing with another cowboy. Hell, he wanted to get out of here. Andy would find a ride back to the apartment. Rand poured out most of his beer and headed to his car. He needed to think, so he drove toward his new property. He turned onto his land and parked his truck. The river shone like a silver ribbon in the moonlight, and the shadows of the trees looked like sentinels standing guard. This parcel of land anchored him to the town, his job, and to continuing to be close to his family. Rand leaned his head back against the headrest. The past week had been busy. Otherwise hed have gone crazy thinking about Marian. He hadnt expected the feelings of loss hed carried around with him all week and the feeling that hed acted ungentlemanly in the way hed left.

But he might as well forget her. She wasnt going to give him the time of day. He didnt blame her. He got out and walked across his land. He envisioned the house and the barn with a few horses. In the house he pictured a wife and children. But Andy was right. The house needed to get built, and he needed to get settled into the routines of the job. Although any routine was a very flexible one. That was part of the jobs charm. But what if he passed up the right woman because it was the wrong time? He shook his head and went back to his car. He was tired. His sleep had been disturbed most nights since he left Marian. Maybe tonight would be different. No. Hed held her soft body in his arms and smelled her sweet fragrance. When he closed his eyes, shed be there with her sad eyes, haunting him. **** Did you have a good time? Chelsea asked Marian as she, Dirk, Lily, and Ty walked back home from the barn dance. She should have. Lily smiled. All the single cowboys were lined up to dance with her. It was great fun, Marian said. She pasted a smile on her face. Oh, Marian, if that smile is your happy face, Id hate to see you really sad, Lily said. What? Im smiling. Shes right, Chelsea said. Your eyes are sad. They reached Ty and Lilys house. Come in and have a beer, Dirk. Well go to my office. I think the ladies want to talk. Sounds good to me. Dirk kissed Chelsea, grabbed a beer from Ty, and followed him down the hall. Lily grinned. Men run when you start talking about feelings. Im fine. You are both worried about nothing. I have a dinner date with Tom on Tuesday, and Friday night were going to a movie in Wagon Wheel. Good. At least youre giving someone else a chance, Chelsea said. If its any consolation, Rand looked as unhappy as you. And he left right after you two danced.

I didnt notice. Liar, both Chelsea and Lily spoke at once. We need chocolate. Lily went to her counter and uncovered a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. This and a cold glass of milk will make most any disappointment a little better. Give me a big piece, Chelsea said. Im not disappointed, but I love chocolate. Soon the conversation turned to babies. Marian was glad to not be the center of attention any longer. The cake was delicious, but it didnt make a dent in the ache in her heart. It had taken all her determined willpower to not throw herself at Rand. When he held her in his arms, she hurt. His particular male scent had desire coiling in her lower abdomen, and she ached to feel him holding her tight. Their explosive coming together last weekend had frightened them both but him the most. Shed hoped hed change his mind and call for her to help at the office. When he didnt, shed determined to forget him. But one look tonight and one dance touching him, smelling his scent, hearing his voice, had her weak in his arms. No feeling sad. Chelsea shook her arm. I know were boring you with the baby talk, but keep up with us. Itll help you to stop thinking about him. Marian smiled. Sorry, youre right. But not really. She didnt think anything could get him out of her mind. Lily patted her arm. Dont worry. I thought Id lost Ty for sure, and then it all worked out in the end. But you knew he loved you, and Chelsea knew Dirk loved her. No, I didnt, Lily said. A lot of the time I thought he hated me or at least wanted me to move away from the ranch. She gave Marian a quick rundown of her story. If you love him, dont give up. She laughed. Dating Tom is going to drive him crazy. But is it fair to Tom? You can decide what to tell him after your date. You might be surprised and like him more than you think, Chelsea said. Now Im going to get my husband, and well walk you home. Its past my bedtime.

Im right here, darlin. I figured youd be getting sleepy. Shes usually in bed by nine lately, Dirk said. Sleepiness is all part of it, Lily agreed. Ty had come in and stood behind her. He leaned down and kissed her cheek. You smell good. Our signal to leave, Dirk teased. Marian envied the love she saw in their eyes. They were great couples. She swallowed around the lump in her throat and followed Dirk and Chelsea out. In her cabin the silent phone mocked her. What did I think, that hed call? Thats not going to happen. She made herself some hot chocolate and tried to read a book Chelsea had loaned her. When her eyes crossed, she gave up and headed to bed but doubtfully to sleep. She tossed and turned, finally going to sleep around five. At ten, her phone rang. Hello. Miss Gaenor, you dont know me. This is Eloise Franklin. The doctors receptionist. Rand has mentioned you. Im sure theyre anxious for you to get back to work. How are you? Im doing better. But this episode was an eye-opener. Im retiring. I told Dr. Neels and Dr. Brodie this morning. I intend to spend all my time with my husband and children. We want to travel, and if the cardiologist agrees, as I expect he will, that my attack was anxiety, then well start planning our first trip. But the reason I called is Im not going back to work at all. The office was in chaos this morning. Its full of kids with colds and adults not feeling good and glaring at the mothers for the noise. She took a breath. Ive been told you did an excellent job the first week I was out. Wouldnt you consider going in today to help them? They havent called and asked me. Well, you know stubborn men. I suspect from the gossip line that you and that handsome Dr. Brodie are attracted to each other and have had a falling out. You just pick yourself up and march in there. Tell them I sent you. There really is a gossip line? Mrs. Franklin gave a hearty laugh. Alive and well. If you want to know anything, you check with one of the girls.

Amazing, better than all our modern devices. And much more fun. No one ever gets nasty. Theyre good-hearted ladies. Well, Id better hang up. My husband and I are going to drive to Wagon Wheel and have lunch. Have fun. The phone clicked off. Did she dare? Shed seen how chaotic it could get that first day. Yes. Theyd welcome her with open arms. Shed do it. Chelsea, would you drive me to town? Ive been informed the doctors need help. Ill come get you. You can tell me the details on the way. **** Marian slipped in the door. All heads turned in her direction. Earsplitting screams filled the air. Some children ran around the room, and others lay sniffling in their mothers arms. The few adult patients looked haggard and tired but perked up on her arrival. She went into the reception area. All exam room doors were shut. The list of patients was long. Lets see what we can do to help you folks, she said. One of the men got up and came to the window. Id like to change my appointment to next week. I didnt want to walk out without an explanation. Marian cheerfully helped him change his appointment, and with relief, he hurried out of the noisy room. Weve got toys back here and some reading books, she spoke to the room in general. A brown-haired, middle-aged woman ignored her at first and then studied the children, whod begun to push each other. Give me the books. Ill take a group over here in the corner and read them a story. The children stopped and looked at her. Of course only the ones who can sit quiet and not fight can join me. She cast a faint smile at Marian as the boys stood straighter. Two girls and three boys raced to the corner and arranged the chairs. Marian handed the lady two books. They can decide. Thanks. Actually, you just caught me. I was going to cancel like that man did and reschedule. You still can. Ill read to them.

And answer the phone and fill the rooms? No, I like to help. You remind me of a schoolteacher. Not far off. Im the principal of our elementary school. I should have straightened up and given them my professional frown. She took the books and went to the corner. Soon the noise level had returned to normal. I knew when I stepped out of the exam room magic had happened again and you were here. Rand leaned into the reception area and smiled. I dont know how you got here, but I believe youre an answer to a prayer. Thanks. Youre welcome. Mrs. Hawkins and her three children are next. Ill bring them in the exam room while you take a breather. She brushed by him and took a deep breath. Even at work, he smelled good and sexy. Hopefully he didnt see the tremble in her hands. By one oclock, the patient area was empty. Andy came up to the front and stretched. At least we dont need to worry about patients, and when Dr. Neels retires fully, in two months, well be running to keep up. Do you like the job? Sure do. He smiled, but Marian had difficulty being friendly. She suspected he had been an influence on Rands decision to cool it. Ignoring him, she began to arrange papers and put files away. Andy followed her lead and surprised her by cleaning up the messy waiting room. He carted out the trash from both areas and then came back to her window. Thanks for the help. Youre good at managing people. Im a supervisor at my real job, and I helped my two older brothers in their office when they first started. You come from a medical family? My fathers a retired doctor, and two brothers are doctors. Plus, my one sister is a nurse. The other four of us have different professions. She picked up her purse. Im going to shop the stores for toys, anything to entertain children, and some up-to-date magazines for the adults. She went to walk by him. Andy caught her arm. You dont like me.

She pulled free. I dont know you. Tell Rand Ill help out the rest of the week as needed. She glanced down the hall. The door to the exam room he was in remained closed. Marian started to leave. Can I borrow your key? Ill bring the stuff back here and leave the key by the desk. Sure. Ill have Rand get a new one made for me. Whoever we hire as receptionist ought to have one of their own. She nodded and left before having to see Rand again. She wanted him to wonder what she was thinking. A little mystery helped, so shed heard. The toy store was fun. All the new gadgets, talking figures, and sirens blowing on cars were entertaining, but many would only add to the noise level she wanted to lower. She browsed further and found games, puzzles, and more books. Something for every age group. Her arms were full when she left the store. Shed take these back to the office and then get the magazines while she waited for Chelsea to pick her up. She unlocked the front door and stepped inside to put the toys in the back. She called Chelsea and arranged to meet her in front of the local drugstore in about thirty minutes. Shed snapped her cell closed and started back out toward the front when she heard a knock at the back door. Not thinking, she opened it. Two men pushed her back and rushed in. Told you she was alone. Lock the front so no one else wanders in, the tall, bulky man ordered his partner. What do you want? Neither doctor is here. We know. Weve been scouting this place a few days. When we saw you return, we had our opportunity. Youhe leaned into her faceare going to give us all the narcotics. I dont know where theyre located. The slimmer man shoved her. For your own sake, youd better find them fast. He waved a gun in her face and started to pull her down the hall. Help her look for the safe or wherever they might hide the stuff. The bigger mans hands shook, especially the one holding his gun. Ill keep a watch out. Hurry. Marians heart pounded. She had lied, hoping theyd leave. But seeing as they were both armed she doubted theyd leave peacefully without the drugs. And even when they found the medicine, they still might shoot her. Shed seen Rand get pills out of a locked cabinet in the equipment room. She took her time pretending to look. They started at the reception area and walked through each exam room.

Hurry up. The man following her grabbed her hair and put the gun to her temple. We arent kidding. Get us the stuff or well kill you and move on to another town. He sneered. Weve killed once, so it doesnt matter how many times after that. A chill ran through her. These werent local boys looking for a high. Shed known that at the first. But she feared as soon as she showed them the cabinet and opened it her life would be forfeit. The clock on the wall told her Chelsea should be at the drugstore. She prayed her friend would call Rand and not come here to look for her. Marian had run out of time. Shed better think of a plan to save herself, and quick.

Chapter Ten Rand and Andy had split up the afternoon home calls, which also gave them time to go by the hospital first before heading out. Rand had checked on his three inpatients and gone to his car. He drove back through the downtown area. His first patient lived about fifteen miles away in that direction. When he saw Chelsea waving, he pulled over and parked. Whats up? Marian called and said shed meet me here fifteen minutes ago. The druggist and Abby at the cash register said she never came in. Its a small town. Did you check around? She may have decided to go in one of the other shops. Marians reliable. If she did, shed never leave me waiting this long. He glanced down both sides of the street. Where did she call from? Your office, I think. She said she was going to leave toys shed bought there and go to the drugstore to get magazines to bring in tomorrow. I cant imagine what would hold her up this long at the office. Ill check. Go inside the drugstore and wait for my call. Im worried.

Shes fine. She probably forgot the time arranging what she bought. But he didnt believe what he said. From Chelseas expression, neither did she. Once Chelsea had gone inside, he crossed the street and went to the sheriffs office. What can I do for you, Doctor? Sheriff Grady asked. Ive got a missing receptionist. He told the sheriff what Chelsea reported to him. Theres probably a simple explanation, but if not Id like you and your gun handy. Sheriff Grady stood and walked to his gun cabinet. He handed Rand a rifle and a set of handcuffs. I know you can shoot. I might need help. Look at this flyer, it just came in about an hour ago. I was going to contact you when you got back to town. Rand looked at the two men pictured on the paper. Those two guys have been hitting pharmacies and doctors offices in this state and others. Well be prepared just in case theyre in your office with Marian. Maybe we can take them as prisoners. But they killed the last person to give them drugs. So theyve escalated to being very dangerous. Shoot if necessary. Rands heart jumped. They left the sheriffs office and walked toward his. He had a bad feeling that the robbers were there. And they had nothing to lose. If they killed Marian, theyd have no witnesses. **** When Marian knew she couldnt put it off any longer, she went into the equipment room. The robber yanked pictures off the wall and found the locked cabinet behind one. He pulled Marian tight against his thin, smelly body. You knew where this was hidden. Youve been taking us on a wild-goose chase. He shoved the gun under her chin. Open the damn thing before I blast the top of your head off. He let go of her and waved the gun in her direction. Hurry. When he shot the gun, Marian fell to the floor. His partner ran into the room. What the hell? You want to announce were here, and you havent even got the damn drugs yet. Wildly, he shot at the door to the cabinet. Marian heard their voices. It sounded like they were talking through a long tunnel. Was she dead? She didnt hurt. Her right ear rang from the sound of the shot. No, she was alive. But she lay very still and watched them through a slit between her eyelids. Every time they started to look down at her, she closed her eyes.

Damn woman fainted when I pretended to shoot her. She said she didnt know the numbers to the lock. **** Rand and the sheriff ran when they heard the shots. Rands heart stopped then beat so hard he thought it would come right out of his chest. He pictured Marian in a pool of blood, dying. Sheriff Grady pushed past him and went in the front door first. They heard the men talking in the back and pounding on the locked cabinet. Rand whispered, Let me lead the way. I know which room theyre in. He stepped lightly down the hall, and the sheriff was right behind him. When he got to the door of the equipment room, he stopped. Rand saw Marian lying on the floor. Fury shook him. Hed been taught to preserve life, but right this minute he wanted to shoot the men standing over her. Sheriff Grady yelled around the door, Drop your guns and come out. We have you surrounded. The bulky robber whirled and raised his gun. Marian threw her legs up and kicked. He sprawled on the floor. His gun flew across the room. The sheriff shot the other robbers gun out of his hand. Rand ran to Marians side and pulled her into his arms. I thought you were dead or badly wounded. His hands ran across her body. Youre not hurt? Not except for some ringing in my right ear. Handcuff that guy lying on the floor. Ive got this one, Sheriff Brady said. You two can talk later. Sorry. Rand jumped up and put his handcuffs on the other thief. Marian stood. The skinny one scared me. He had the gun at my throat, then he shifted his position and shot. I briefly fainted. When I woke I wasnt certain if hed wounded me or not. It took me a second to realize hed moved the gun farther away at the last moment. I pretended to be unconscious. They said they killed someone at their last robbery. Tears filled her eyes. I was afraid theyd do the same to me. You did great, little lady. Youd fit right in with the other women in this town. Theyre real spunky, Sheriff Grady said.

Rand hugged her. When I heard the shots, I was sure theyd wounded or, worse, killed you. He hugged her tighter. I didnt know if anyone would arrive in time. Id already decided to go down fighting. But I hoped Chelsea would get worried and send help. She did. She hailed me down, and I got the sheriff. Help me walk these two over to the jail. My two deputies are on patrol. The sheriff grinned. I cant wait to tell Jack, the sheriff in Wagon Wheel, that I got the outlaws. He was sure theyd come to his town, then hed get the glory. Since you werent hurt, Miss Gaenor, I dont suppose youll mind me ragging him a little. Have all the fun you want, Sheriff. You and Rand saved my life. Rand nodded toward the drugstore. All the people had come out of the buildings on hearing the guns. Chelsea saw her and came running. You are my other hero, Marian said to Chelsea. Can we go home? I feel weak and sick. A reaction to all of this, Rand said. But as soon as Im finished here Ill come check on you. No, please. Its not necessary. Ill stay with Chelsea. Shell take care of me. You have calls to make. May I come after my calls? All right. She didnt want to sound too eager, and she really did feel bad. On the plus side, the ringing in her ear had almost stopped. **** Rand rushed through his calls. He had to see Marian and check her before hed be completely convinced she was all right. The sound of the bullets still echoed in his head. A feeling of loss had smothered him. His feet wouldnt move fast enough. Finally, he waved good-bye to his last patient. The ranch wasnt far. Hed go there from here. After calling Dr. Neels and Andy, they had decided to meet at the office at seven. That gave him two hours to visit with Marian. Visit? Hell, he had to hold her body close, to feel her heart beating against his. He stopped at Chelseas house first. She went to the cabin about an hour ago. She was tired and needed to lie down, Chelsea said.

Ill go check on her. Rand jumped in his truck and drove the short distance. The front door was locked. He knocked. No answer. The bedroom was at the back left corner. Maybe she left a window open and he could climb through. But he might get shot after what she went through today. He pounded on the door. Im coming, a grumpy voice called out. In a few minutes, Marian stood in the entranceway. Her golden hair was tousled. She wore a short, thin cotton nightgown. I thought it was you. Anyone else would have left after the first knock. She gave him a sleepy-eyed frown. Rand stepped in, locked the door, and pulled her into his arms. He took a deep breath of her sweet, floral fragrance. Youre hurting my ribs. Sorry. He loosened his grip just a bit. Ive been crazy wanting to get here and see you again. I needed to reassure myself you were really all right. He scooped her into his arms and headed to the bedroom. Im going to take off that gown and check your whole body. Dont be silly. Im fine. Just tired, and a little bruised and sore from falling to the floor. Rand laid her gently on the bed. He pulled the thin nightgown over her head. After that he stripped his clothes off. Starting at her feet, he checked for soreness and bruises. Touching her soft skin had his dick hard as a rock. Is this how you check all your patients? Heavens no. Hed seen the teasing light in her eyes. Youre special. His hands caressed her legs, and his mouth trailed a line of kisses up to her lower lips. He went around that area and stopped to check her abdomen. He heard a sound of annoyance. I must be thorough. And kissings part of the checkup? Only for you, darlin. When his hands cupped her breasts, she sighed. He bent and licked the pink, rounded nipples. You have beautiful breasts.

Ive heard that before. When he frowned, she smiled. From you, darlin. His frown switched to laughter. He straddled her body. Youre good for me. You lightened me up. She started to say something but didnt. He suspected he didnt want to hear what shed been about to say. His hands moved her head around, feeling her neck. Any pains in this area? No. Turn over. He moved away so she could do as he asked. Rand ran his fingers through her hair and felt for any bumps. Headache? A little, but I havent eaten much today. Ill give you a back rub. Tell me if anyplace hurts. He started to rub straight down. He stopped, seeing a bruise on the right side of her back. He touched it gingerly. That hurts a little, not much. Ill avoid that area. She moaned with pleasure as he massaged the rest of her backside. His hands kneaded her sweet ass, and he slipped his fingers between her folds and into her tight, wet pussy. She clamped her inner muscles around them. As you might have noticed, I want to make love to you. Do you feel up to it? Youre the doctor. You tell me. Her sultry voice made his heart race. Im under the influence of a sexy female. My decision might be for my own benefit. Her soft laugh warmed him all the way through. Dont worry. Ill be sure I get my benefit out of it, too. Rand put his arm under her waist. Get on your knees, darlin. This might be the best position. My weight wont press down on you so hard.

Her ass came up and against his hungry dick. He wanted to enter her right them, but he slowed himself. Reaching forward, his fingers rubbed across her pebbled nipple. With his other hand, he separated her folds and put pressure against her nub. That feels so good. Her ass pressed harder against his cock. Trying to ignore the demands of his dick, Rand slid two fingers into her pussy opening and rubbed across the most sensitive spot. Her buttocks moved hard against him. He thrust his fingers in and out and pinched her nipple. Her breathing had quickened. He positioned his cock and slid inside her warmth. Her inner muscles grabbed tightly around him. His cock pulsed, and his balls ached for completion. She met his back-and-forth motion, taking him deeper. When the ripples began to flow over his cock and her muscles squeezed the hardest, her body stiffened and she shouted his name. He let himself go and surged forward. Pleasure shot up his spine and to every cell in his body. It barely registered in his brain to roll to the side so he didnt hurt her with his weight. He held her close and rubbed her silky bottom. Every time was better. What was he going to do? Shed be leaving soon. Their time together was too short to make permanent decisions. And yet he remembered his mothers words. Still, shed admitted she and Dad had been lucky it worked out. Youre very quiet. Marian had raised up and stared at his face. Deep thoughts? He grinned. Just trying to get my breath, darlin, he lied, and he suspected she knew it. Shall I cook some bacon and eggs for dinner? Marian asked. Rand glanced at his watch. I have a meeting at seven with Dr. Neels and Andy at the office. Id better shower and go. He kissed her. I hate to rush off. Dont worry about coming in tomorrow, rest. Ill see you in the evening. He got up and took his clothes into the bathroom. **** Marian went to the closet and put on a warm robe. She tied the belt snug and went into the kitchen. The coffee was perking when he came out. She poured coffee into a to-go cup for him. You can take this with you. Thanks. With his other arm he pulled her close. He kissed her lips. Until tomorrow night. Ill call. She locked the door and leaned against the wood. Tonight she couldnt watch his lights disappear for the last time. She was pretty sure what hed been thinking. After all that had

happened, he still couldnt admit she was special to him. He continued to pull away after making love. Marian put the eggs and bacon she planned to cook back in the refrigerator. There was a pint of chocolate ice cream in the freezer and her favorite Fig Newton cookies in the cupboard. She seldom allowed herself to splurge, but tonight was the exception. With all her goodies in hand, she settled on the sofa. This time had been the best yet. His gentle, slow seduction had her whole body responding hungrily to his touch and to his gentle invasion. But afterward, shed sensed his deep thoughts. Shed known although hed been caught up in the lovemaking he still wasnt sure about his feelings or didnt want to admit them. He resisted sharing his thoughts. Maybe to him it was just good sex. We women always want to make it more. She put a large spoonful of the ice cream in her mouth. The chocolate melting temporarily raised her spirits. But she had to blink her eyes to keep the tears back. The quick development of their relationship worried Rand. In her heart, she knew he was the one for her. She loved him, whether it had been three weeks or three years. But she couldnt stay around waiting to see if or when hed choose her. She took another bite of ice cream. The sweet, cold chocolate slid down her throat, slightly easing the tension. Marian didnt want to bounce back and forth like a Ping-Pong ball between him wanting her for a lover and then not. Seeing him every day, making love to him and knowing his struggle, was too difficult. Shed almost died this afternoon. It had woken her up. It was time for her to take firm control of her future and not wait for someone else to do it for her. Tomorrow, shed fly to New York and give her notice. Then shed go home. She wanted to have her mothers arms around her, to sleep in her old bed, to be comforted by her family. Her neardeath experience had changed Marians outlook and had shaken her world. At home shed think about what changes to make in her life.

Chapter Eleven You are certain this is what you want to do? Chelsea asked for the umpteenth time. And youre not even going to let him know? Marian took her eyes off the passing scenery. Chelsea had agreed to drive her to the airport.

Weve gone over this. If I tell him, hell convince me to stay. But hes too uncertain of his feelings. I dont blame him. He just ended his engagement, he has a new job, theres a lot on his mind. We met at the wrong time. I want permanence. He wants his freedom and to have fun. Neither is wrong, if both the people involved want the same thing. Im going to miss you. You cut your visit short, and I have an idea you wont be back for a long time. You know Ill come when the babies are born. I cant wait to meet them. Youll need help then, too. Chelsea pulled into a parking space. You promise? I do. Dont get out. I can take care of my bags. The one has wheels, and the other isnt that heavy. Marian gave Chelsea a hug and got her suitcases from the trunk. She waved as she headed inside the terminal. Shed made reservations by phone. There was a long hour before her flight. After checking her bags, she wandered through the terminal. She found a shop selling papers and books and bought a paper to read on the plane. At a small eatery, she tried to eat a sandwich. She got half of it down past the lump in her throat. Marian hoped shed made the right decision. It was too late to question herself now. If he loved her, hed still be around when she came back. If he found someone else, she and Rand werent to be. As they called her flight number her cell rang. It was Rand. He was calling as promised. But it wasnt the promise she needed. With a heavy heart, she turned off her cell and entered the plane. **** A recording answered, telling him to leave a message. She must be at Chelseas or out riding. Rand closed his cell and went to call his next patient. Hed try her again, later. Patients kept him busy, and he had three home visits to make. The day flew by. At five, he realized he hadnt called Marian back. Before driving off from his last visit, he got in his car and dialed her number. The same recording, to leave a number or message. That was strange. Rand called Chelsea. Hi, Ive tried to reach Marian twice today. Is she with you?

There was a long hesitation. Didnt she leave you a message? Rand chuckled. If she did, I wouldnt have to call you. I hate her for leaving this on me. Well, not really. But Im angry at her. Leaving what on you? Rands throat tightened. He was pretty sure he didnt want to hear her answer. Marian left this morning for New York. She cut her visit short. I think shell be calling you later to explain. Did her boss call her back? No. I see. Rand, dont come to any conclusions until you talk with her. I think her silence says it all. If someone had hit him in the chest with a board, it wouldnt hurt any more. Shed left without a word. He started the car and stopped at the convenience store on a road headed to his new property. He bought a six-pack of beer. No on call tonight. His truck ran smoothly over the paved road onto his property. He grabbed the blanket hed hoped to use tonight when he made love to Marian in the moonlight. He took his six-pack and headed toward the stream and the trees. After the third beer, he zipped up his jacket. He was cold. Cold and lonely, with no one to warm him. The memory of their night together in the sleeping bag haunted him. His mind tricked him. For a second he smelled her, and her soft body seemed to brush against his hand. Hed get over her. It was just for fun. Hed kept telling her that until she believed him. He clasped his head in his hands. Had he made the worst decision of his life? Obviously, he wasnt very good at relationships. Hed stayed engaged for three years to a woman he didnt love because it was comfortable. And when what he was looking for came right to his door, he ran for fear of losing his independence. A car turned down the road toward him. He recognized Andys vehicle. Andy spotted him and strolled in his direction.

Can I have one of those beers? You came a long way for a drink. Rand handed him the beer. I had to find my best buddy. He sat on the ground facing Rand. Want to talk? Marian left. No message. She just got on the plane and flew off. Andy started to speak. Dont. I might punch you. Im itching to hit something. All right. Show me around this place and tell me where the cabin is going. Andy stood. Rand joined him and pointed out the boundaries where the cabin would be situated and face the stream, talked about the porches on three sides, and then stared silently at the dark night. Ill drive you back. Well get your car tomorrow. Rand let Andy lead him to his car. Then Andy locked Rands up. The drive back was quiet. When they stopped outside the apartment, Andy shut off the engine and turned to Rand. I promise not to advise you ever again. I made a big mistake. For me, playing the field is fun. I keep it light. You cant. And if Ive made you lose someone important, feel free to punch me. I think itd make me feel better. Forget it. Rand got out and went upstairs, straight to his bedroom. He sat half the night waiting for the call that didnt come. Three days later, her letter arrived. Rand had finished seeing his morning patients and stopped at his mailbox before going to his apartment for lunch. Her scent wafted on the breeze to his nose. He walked slowly up the stairs. Might as well get it over and done. She hadnt put a return address on the envelope. He ripped it open. Rand recognized her neat, concise writing. Dear Rand, I hope you will read this and not tear it up. Im sorry about not calling, but my determination was weak. I didnt have the strength to hear your voice and have you try to change my mind. You were right. We are at different places in our lives. I want a home and family, with all the trimmings. Youre ready to be free and play. Nothings wrong with that, but I couldnt be the playmate. Not anymore. It hurt too much. Im going to change my life, do something totally different. Im not sure what yet. I wish you happiness and success in your career.

Marian Shed been braver than him. Hed fought back and forth with his feelings. Hed let the joy she gave him scare him away. But shed be back. Chelseas babies were due in about five months. This time hed be ready for Marian. Hed know his answers. **** His weeks were busy, but time still went by slowly. Marian had been gone six weeks. They hadnt had contact since her letter. Rand had the weekend off but wished he was working. Andy had gone out on call. Rand wandered around the small apartment. Hed ride to his property and look at his cabin. The contractor said theyd be done in a week. On the way, hed visit his brother Graham. Graham had built his home toward the back of his land. It was smaller than Dirks. As Graham had said, it was all he needed. If he needed more, hed add on. The comment was so like his brother. Hed been the loner from the day he was born. He had entertained himself with books, building projects, or riding his horse. He liked sports, and he was usually on the winning side. But it took a lot of encouragement from his brothers to get Graham to join them. Rand knocked and waited. He heard Graham stirring and then saw him sauntering toward the front door. Well, to what do I owe this visit? Graham grinned and unhooked the screen. I thought you might like to get out of here. I bought some property recently, and Im going to check on the cabin Im having built. Want to ride along? Are you buying breakfast? Is that the price of your company? Yep, I dont come cheap. Rand laughed. His face muscles felt stiff. He hadnt smiled or laughed much since Marian had left. Sure. I guess I need to eat, too. Let me grab my hat. Were going to Millies place, arent we?

Best place in town. As you said, you dont come cheap. Rand heard Graham chuckling as he walked off. Hed often wondered what haunted Graham. Since hed returned from his overseas travels, hed become more of a recluse. He wouldnt talk, not even if you asked him. Graham was a no-comment man unless he was ready. Millie greeted them at the door. My, my, two of my favorite cowboys done come to see me. You say that to all the men, Rand teased. Millie was short, with a round face surrounded by snow-white hair. Rand didnt remember it any other color. She was a good cook and always cheerful. Her caf did a good business, especially on the weekends. She led them to a back booth and brought two cups of steaming black coffee. Ill be back for your order. Graham sipped his coffee. What brought you in my direction? Couldnt I just be missing my brother? Maybe. But your face looks haggard, and Ive heard rumors your lady left town in a hurry. Damn that gossip line. Now I may have to hit you if youre insinuating Ive been listening to gossip. Moms worried about you. Millie came back before he could answer. She took their orders and hurried off. When have you seen Mom? She visits every few days or I go by to see her. Im glad you bought the property next to the home place. One of us needed to be close to her. Not that any of us seem to stay gone. Weve all, except Clay and Grace, come back, Rand said and grinned. You surprised me the most, Graham said. And you broke off your engagement to a beautiful woman. We werent suited. It took you three years to see that? I could have told you after the first meeting. What?

Im a writer. I study people. Always have. Rand sat back. Well, Ill be damned. Here you are, boys. Millie sat hot, steaming plates full of sausages, eggs, grits, biscuits, and another smaller plate of pancakes in front of them. If that dont fill you up, youd better see the doctor. She walked away laughing at her own joke. She makes this place. When shes gone it wont be the same, Rand said. He faced Graham across the table. Tell me how you knew. Eat. My food is hot. The way I like it. Graham poured a layer of syrup on his pancakes and, ignoring Rand, started eating. It didnt take long to polish off the food and several cups of coffee. Graham took the bill. My treat, he said. You pulled me out of my dark hole and drove me here. What dark hole? Rand asked as they walked to the car. Im stumped with my story. And I needed the company. Graham opened the car door and got in. When Rand got inside, he stared at Graham and glanced around them. What are you looking at? Graham asked. I thought the world must be coming to an end for my brother to admit he needed company. Very funny. Shut up and drive. More relaxed than hed been in weeks, Rand headed out of town. Mom had told me youd bought some property, Graham admitted. She did? Were you surprised? Nope. Rand shook his head. He might as well enjoy the drive. Graham was back to his usual short, tothe-point answers. They walked around Rands land and inspected the cabin. Its small, but it will suffice, for now. He showed Graham where the bigger house would be built in the summer. This cabin will be a great place for visitors.

You expecting a rush of people to visit? Maybe, sometime in the future. I like the cabin and the land. When are you getting married? What? Im not settling down yet. Or at least not until I talk with Marian. She haunts my dreams and my daylight hours. Word has it you arent dating at all. Mom or the gossip line? Graham grinned. The gossip line this time. They both hooted with laughter. Rand took a deep breath. I needed that. Glad to be of service. Take me home. I think Im ready to write. And if I were a gambler, Id bet youll be leaving town soon to see your lady. But I havent known her very long, Rand said, reminding himself again of the short time hed known Marian. Damn, man. You were always so serious, checking everything. Its good for a doctor but not necessarily for deciding your life. Id bet it took you over a year of dating to propose the first time. It did. Graham opened the car door. Do what you want. Im not your psychiatrist. The old Graham had returned. Rand got in and started the car. Back on the highway, he glanced at Graham. You never talk about the job you had when the family all thought you were just exploring Europe. Graham jerked his head around and frowned at Rand. Howd you know? A good guess. I leave the past in the past. And thats all youre going to say. Rand turned into the drive to Grahams place. Whos the woman standing by that blue sedan?

Graham didnt answer at first. He was staring at the tall, willowy brunette dressed in a rosecolored suit. Shes part of the past. When Rand stopped, Graham got out. See you. Thanks for breakfast. Rand knew that was his cue to leave. In his rearview mirror, he saw the woman smile and step toward Graham.

Chapter Twelve Marian had given her two-week notice at work. She took another week to pack up and move her and her stuff home to North Carolina. Mom welcomed her with open arms. Her father kissed her cheek and said hed missed her. Neither asked questions. Which was a relief. She didnt think she could talk about Rand without crying. She puttered around the house, helped her mother paint a bedroom, worked in the flower gardens, and visited all her siblings. Her nieces and nephews ran to her, grabbed her legs, and begged for games. It was good to be cuddled inside the loving arms of her family. Rand hadnt responded to her letter. If he even read it. She didnt expect to hear from him. But deep inside, a tiny flame of hope refused to go out. Her mom called out, The phones for you, Marian. Mike has an offer. Puzzled, Marian picked up the extension. Hi, Mike. Whats up? My receptionist is sick. Can you fill in for the day or until she returns? Id appreciate it. Marian hesitated. She knew her oldest brother had a soft spot in his heart for all his siblings, especially his two sisters. She suspected he was making a place for her. Youre sure you didnt just give her the day off? No way. Ill be there in thirty minutes. Shed dressed to go to the store for Mom, and the outfit she had on was fine for Mikes office.

You knew he was going to call, she said to her mother. He mentioned wanting to find a job for you in someones office. You told him how much youd enjoyed helping out while you were on vacation. He says his receptionist is sick. You know he wouldnt lie about one of his staff. Im sure the opportunity just opened up. Dont be so suspicious. See how you like it. He may be a terrible taskmaster. Mike? Youve got to be kidding. Hes more softhearted than you, Sis, and me combined. Go. Her mom handed her car keys to Marian. When Marian walked into the medical office, memories of Rand swamped her. Ignoring them, she stiffened her shoulders, smiled at the patients, and soon was immersed in the busy cardiology office. **** Seven weeks and counting, Marian thought as she left her brothers office. Her temporary job had lasted longer than shed expected. The receptionist had to have emergency surgery but was expected back in another week. The job had helped keep her busy and her mind off of Rand. At least part of the day. A cold wind flipped her coat apart at the bottom. Thanksgiving was next week, then Christmas, and then winter would have fully arrived. She went in the back door of her parents house. Shed go freshen up before helping Mom with dinner. Marian, is that you? You have company. Marians heart lurched. No, dont get excited. He wouldnt come. Shed see him when Chelseas babies were born. But a tall man stepped through the doorway of the living room. Hello, Marian. Rands husky voice poured warmth into her cold body. How did you get here? I flew. His lips curled up in that lopsided smile. Why?

To take you to dinner. Will you go? We have a lot to talk about. She swallowed and took a breath. Do we? You just pop in here after two months and say we have to talk? Seven weeks. Ive been counting. Marian blinked her eyes. She would not cry. Hed been counting just like she had, or so he said. She tried to rouse her anger at him for leaving her all this time without a call or anything. But thats how I left him initially. I have to change clothes. You look great to me. But Ill wait. She practically ran to her room, shut the door, and leaned against it. Her legs were putty, and her heart pounded. He was here. Seven weeks and two days later, and theyd both been counting. She looked through her closet and finally chose a pale-yellow, multidraped, long-sleeved dress that fit snug and short. Spiked cream-colored shoes completed the outfit. Shed wear her creamcolored coat to keep her warm. Not that she needed anything. Just looking into his blue eyes and seeing that smile had her blood running hot. I mustnt get my hopes up. This doesnt mean hes going to ask me to marry him. She put on her coat and buttoned it up. Might as well let him get the full view at dinner. Her mother was alone in the living room when she came out. Her heart sank. Your dad asked Dr. Brodie to join him for a drink in his study. Im sure theyre talking medicine. Your father may be retired, but you cant take the doctor out of the man. Sit. Her mother studied her. Hes the one that sent you flying home looking like youd lost your best friend or lover. Momma! Marian knew her face was beet red. Really, darling. Your dad and I were young once. We arent that old now. She smiled at Marian. Follow your heart. They both looked around when they heard male voices. Her father and Rand strolled in. Both were smiling. Her dad patted Rand on the shoulder. I like this young man and what hes doing. He looked straight at Rand. I meant it when I said Id visit to see your operation there in Montana. Beautiful country. I hunted there a long time ago.

He glanced at Marian. Guess Im holding you two up. Enjoy your dinner. Rand took Marians hand. Ready? Yes. In the drive, a limousine waited. For us? Marian asked. I thought Id do this up right. Ty said Lily loved their limo ride. He opened the door. Marian got in and slid across the seat. Take us for a ride, Rand told the driver and then pulled the curtain down, giving them privacy. We have champagne and hors doeuvres to start. Our dinner reservation isnt for an hour. Rand popped the cork and poured the sparkling wine into two glasses. He handed one to Marian. A toast. To you, my love. The tiny flicker of hope flared into a fire in her belly. She took a sip. The bubbles tickled her nose. When we got old enough Mom and Dad would let us have a tiny sip of champagne at Christmas. I always loved the bubbles. They made me laugh. Rand took a chocolate-covered strawberry and held it to her lips. She took a bite. He finished the rest. Outside, a light flurry of snow melted before it hit the ground. The driver had put on the radio. Sweet melodies filled the air. Rand took her glass and set it and his to the side. Then he closed the side curtains and pulled her close. Ive missed your scent. He sniffed her hair and tickled her neck with a kiss. And Ive missed your smile. His fingers ran around the outline of her mouth. He nibbled at her bottom lip. By this time her heart was pounding so loudly she thought surely he and the driver could both hear it. Desire stroked her belly and spread to every nerve. He unbuttoned her coat and pushed it off her shoulders. Wow, you do look great. His lips kissed the pulse beating rapidly in her neck. Tenderly, he cupped her breasts. Reaching behind her, he pulled the zipper down and lowered the top of her dress to her waist.

I love these front openings on your bras. In a minute hed opened the bra, and his warm hands caressed each breast. His teeth rubbed across her pebbled nipples. She held his head fast to her chest. Raising his head, he said, Im rushing again. After I saw you, I knew Id never make it through dinner without tasting and touching you. Dont stop now. I cant. One touch or taste is never enough. Yet it took you seven weeks to get here. The words slipped out of Marians mouth. She shivered, fastened her bra, and pulled her dress up to cover her shoulders. I guess Im afraid that tomorrow youll change your mind like you did several times in the past. Darn, there I go pushing him to prove to me he means it this time. He must. He came all this way, but Im afraid to believe him. I dont want to go through what I have these past weeks. I was wrong. Being with you was so different than anything Id felt before. You scared me. Id planned to take my time getting used to the job, build a house, settle in, and then find a wife. Im a great planner. How does that work for you? Rand shrugged. Not so good. It got me into a long-term engagement with another planner. If I hadnt seen how ecstatic Dirk and Chelsea were at their wedding, I might never have realized Anna and I didnt have that type of relationship. At least not until it was too late. But then I also saw you that day, and I touched your hand and got zapped. Well be getting to the restaurant soon. After we eat therell be plenty of time to talk and play. Rand pulled her dress zipper up and pulled her coat around her. His hands held her lapels together. He leaned close. Just touching you still gives me a zap, like an electrical charge to the heart. He kissed the tip of her nose as the limousine slowed to park. The restaurant was elegant with red satin wallpaper, crystal chandeliers, and a three-man band playing easy-listening music. Rand removed her coat and handed it to a waiter. You look incredible. That dress hugs every delectable curve, and those sexy shoes highlight your smooth, soft, long legs. Marian put her hand on his chest. Down, boy. I intend to order the most expensive item on the menu and take my time eating it. Sheer torture.

You deserve every bit. She didnt tell him how sexy he looked. Every woman theyd walked by had stared. His tall, well-built body wasnt hidden by the silk, dark-blue suit. And the feline grace in his walk was enough to make a woman moan. He let go of her lapels and motioned for her to sit. The maitre d brought them a menu covered in red satin and thick enough to be a small book. The lady will have the most expensive item you have listed. Ill take a steak, medium rare, and baked potato. Rand handed the menus back. The maitre d looked surprised. He started to ask a question but instead shook his head and walked off. Marian giggled. I cant believe you did that. It might cost over a hundred dollars. I might not like it. Money is no object, madam. Your wish is my command. All right. Who are you? You are not Rand Brodie. Rand took the hand shed been waving around. He kissed the top of her fingers. This is the Rand you have created. Dont blame it on me. But she couldnt stop beaming from ear to ear. Hell, I cant wait. Suddenly, he slid out of his seat, took a small box out of his jacket, and went down on one knee. Will you marry me, love me, have my children? Im madly in love with you. Please put me out of my misery. The band had quit playing. The room went quiet. All eyes were on them. It was as though the whole room held its breath. Tears filled her eyes. She looked at the face of the man she loved. I ought to make you suffer more first, but I cant. I love you. Yes, Ill marry you. She threw her arms around his neck. A deep sigh went around the room, and then the other diners clapped and cheered. Rand slid the diamond ring on her finger. He made her move so he could sit close beside her. When he kissed her, she hugged him tighter.

Sir, the maitre d said. The couple across from you has sent a bottle of champagne to offer you congratulations. Rand and Marian waved their thanks as the cork popped out of the bottle. Maybe Id better warn you, Marian whispered. I get a little wild when I drink too much of this sparkling wine. Wonderful. Ive got the top suite at the hotel. No one will hear you chase me around the room. **** When they arrived at the suite, she ran into the bathroom. Stay out. She slammed the door in Rands face and locked it. Im the doctor. Let me in. He heard mumbling. In the small kitchen on the other side of the suite, he found tea and crackers. The meal had been delicious. Marian had lobster and steak with a special sauce. She ate every bit and the chocolate cake with rum sauce. All the rich food and drink had not agreed with her stomach. Hed noticed shed lost weight. He had hurt her, but hed make up for it. He planned for it to take him the rest of his life. Marian wandered into the kitchen. He poured her a cup of tea. Try this. He handed her the cup. How about a few crackers? Just the tea will do. I found a packaged toothbrush and toothpaste in the bathroom. At least my mouth tastes better. I dont guess Ill get to see that wild woman tonight. None. Shes gone. Just as well. We need to cuddle and talk. Rand helped her undress and covered her with the blanket. Then he went to the bathroom to brush his teeth. When he came back, Marian was curled on her side, asleep. He undressed and got in beside her. He lay against her backside, smelling her sweetness and touching her soft skin. His hard cock jerked in response. No playing tonight, buddy. The lady has retired for the evening. Her soft snore brought a smile to his face. Shed said yes. That was all that mattered.

Tomorrow, theyd work out all the plans and the wedding. He wanted it soon. In fact, he didnt want to return to Montana without her. Chelsea had helped him choose a few pieces of furniture for his cabin. A bed and some chairs. He and Marian would pick the rest. After all his doubts, he couldnt wait for her to be Mrs. Randolph Brodie. It felt like hed just gone to sleep when Marian stirred. But Rand saw daylight peeking between the slit in the curtains. He pulled her hair to the side and kissed her neck. Good morning. Rand moved closer against her buttocks and cupped her soft breast in his hand. What a nice way to wake up. I was afraid last night might have been a dream. Marian twisted around onto her backside. No, there really is a handsome cowboy in bed with me. Andshe looked at her ring fingerIm wearing a diamond ring. You said yes. I wont let you change your mind. Hmmm, maybe youd better remind me why I said yes. You mean like this? He bent his head and kissed her breast closest to him while he rubbed the other peak between his fingers. Thats a good start. Rand took his time tasting each breast. His tongue ran over and around her nipples, and then he kissed her abdomen. When he slid farther down, he spread her legs wide. Her sweet, sensual scent hiked his desire to another level. With his fingers, he separated the folds that hid her jewel. His tongue licked across her nub. Oh yes, that feels so good. He tasted her sweet honey from her clit to the opening of her pussy. His tongue flicked inside, and her hips moved restlessly. He put two fingers into her pussy opening. His mouth covered her clit. As he suckled her nub, he moved his fingers in and out. Her breathing became more rapid. Rand removed his fingers and flicked his tongue inside her opening again. Marian called out for him to go inside her.

Quickly positioning his cock, he plunged inside and sank deep within her tight, hot pussy. Leaning forward, he nipped at her sensitive nipples. Inside her, his dick pulsed against her inner walls. Slowly he withdrew then thrust back in. Marian grabbed his buttocks and pulled him deeper. His eyes connected with hers as he pounded in and out until they were both glistening with perspiration and shivering from the reaction to their connection. He saw Marians eyes glaze over and her body stiffen. She clamped tighter around his hard dick. Once more Rand pulled back and pushed in deep. His hard cock throbbed for release, but he held back until he heard her cry of fulfillment. Then he went in and out rapidly a few more times until his orgasm hit him hard and vibrated through his whole body. He rolled to the side but kept her close. They lay together rasping for breath. When their bodies cooled, he pulled the cover back over them. Leaning over her, he kissed her sweet mouth. I want to wake up to you every morning for the rest of my life. Can we plan our wedding for very soon? I want to take you home to our cabin. You got it finished? I drove the workers crazy going by every day and urging them on. Well start building the bigger house in the spring. What about children? Im ready when you are. Thats a project Ill definitely enjoy working on. He brushed her hair off her forehead and rubbed the silky strands between his fingers. I want it all just like you do, a wife, a home, children, the whole works. Ive had plenty of time to think about what you wrote and how I almost lost the best thing that ever happened to me. Then lets get married. Where and when? Id like a place outdoors with both our big families all there and our friends, Marian said. She lay half across him with her chin balanced on her hand. Do you have any suggestions? Here or in Montana? Id like my family to see where well live. Do you think your mother would mind if we had the wedding at the gazebo? Its a beautiful setting. Chairs could be set up for the guests.

Mom would love to be in the middle of it all, and my sister is great at decorating. Im sure shed help with that. Our families can mingle and get to know each other. Lets shower and check the plans out with your parents. We havent told them about our engagement yet. But theyll be pleased. Id better call. They might be worried. They wont be. They know. Marian had started to get off the bed. She turned back. Know what? I asked your father for your hand in marriage. He said hed be glad to have another doctor in the family. Im sure youve won Mom and Dads heart with that gesture. Dads sort of old fashioned. She headed for the shower. Lets get dressed. We have a lot to do. Marian wiggled her hips and laughed. Rand ran to her, scooped her up in his arms, and joined her in the shower. Our plans and seeing your parents can wait a few more minutes. He adjusted the water to warm. Im still hungry for you. It was a long seven weeks. She put her arms around his neck, and he pulled her legs up and around his hips. His mouth plundered hers as the warm water cascaded across their bodies. He stepped to the side and held her against the tile wall as his cock slid deep inside. Her pussy clamped around him. Her soft breasts rubbed against his hard chest. Happy? he asked. Deliriously, she purred in his ear. A sharp bolt of desire shot straight up his spine. He began to move in and out while watching the glow in her sherry eyes. She kissed his neck and bit the edge of his shoulder. Im never going to get enough of you. Good, she said. Because I love you so very much. Same here, darlin.

Marian moved her hips and took him in deeper. Her pussy walls clenched and unclenched around his cock. His hands clamped her sweet ass tight. He quickened his movements. When her body trembled, he pushed in harder. He gulped for air and heard her yell his name as unbridled joy ripped through him. He slowly let her legs down. She leaned into him. Dont let go. I might fall. Never, not with me holding you. But he wasnt so sure right now. His legs felt shaky. She put her arms around him and kissed his chest. Wed better finish this shower and dress, or we wont make it to your parents today, Rand said. Her soft giggle warmed him through and through. She stepped back. We need to get our wedding planned and soon. I want to go home to your cabin. His hands cupped her face. Our cabin, darlin. He kissed her mouth and then the ring shining on her finger.

Chapter Thirteen Marian woke early to a gentle rain blowing against her window. It was her wedding day. She snuggled back under the covers for a few more minutes. The past month had been hectic. Rand had had to return to work the Monday after he proposed. Her mother, father, and she flew to Montana a week later. Her parents stayed with Mrs. Brodie. Marian took up residence in Chelsea and Dirks cabin. She had returned to her job at the doctors office. Everyone had seemed pleased to see her back. She thought she might even forgive Andy and come to like him. Sheriff Grady had notified her that the robbers were being sent to South Dakota to be tried for the murder theyd committed. You might be called to testify about how they mentioned murdering someone. But these things take time. It wont be soon, hed told her. Shed been relieved to know she didnt have to worry about dealing with that unpleasantness with all the rest she was juggling.

In between the families getting acquainted, their jobs, and furnishing the new cabin, theyd managed to arrange a wedding. Her mother and Mrs. Brodie became instant friends. Rands sister, Grace, had made several trips home to help with the planning, especially the decorations. Marian went to the window. The rain had stopped. Raindrops glistened like diamonds on the leaves of the trees as the sun came out bright and clear. It would be dry and beautiful by eleven. Her cell rang. She smiled, seeing Rands name. Good morning. I know the groom cant see his bride before the wedding. I still wanted to hear your voice. Are you all right? You havent gotten cold feet and changed your mind? No. Im due at eleven to marry a handsome cowboy doctor. Nothing will keep me from that date. Good to hear. I love you. Youre sure you dont mind only having a three-day honeymoon? Ill make it up to you later when I can get a week off. Weve discussed this. Just you and me in our cabin with a fire and a glass of champagne. Heaven. But not too much sparkling wine. This time I want to see that wild woman you tempted me with and not have her sick and going to sleep on me. Dont worry. Shell be waiting at the cabin. I love you, too, but Im going to hang up. It takes a lady a long time to prepare herself for her wedding. See you soon. Marian still pinched herself occasionally. It was hard to believe her life had changed so much in a little over three months. She was getting all her wishes, a good, loving man, a home, and hopefully before much longer a child. She and Rand had talked, and she had stopped her birth control pills yesterday. Hello, are you awake? her mothers voice called from the living room. Ill be right there. Marian pulled on her fluffy robe and tightened the belt. Her mom was beaming. The last of the family arrived late last night. Theyre all staying at the little inn near the edge of town. Mrs. Brodie will have them picked up and driven to her home for the wedding and reception. Im glad Dan and Mary could get here.

He had an emergency just before he left. He wasnt on call, but you know him. It was one of his first patients. He stayed until the man was stabilized. Dirk went to the airport to meet them around eleven thirty last night. Everyone has been wonderful about helping us get our wedding planned in a short period of time. Youre marrying into a fine family. Rand is a good man, besides being very handsome, her mother said and winked. Were very happy for you. Jane and I have found we have lots of common interests. Shes coming to North Carolina for a visit in the spring. Marian kissed her moms cheek. Its great having everyones approval. Ill fix your breakfast while you shower, her mother said. I cant eat. Just a little, some toast and coffee. We cant have the bride fainting. Shoo, go get ready. **** Her wedding gown was a creamy-white light wool, with long sleeves and a high neckline. The fabric fit snug and flared at the bottom. Tiny, pinkish-colored sequins and cream lace edged the neck, the ends of the sleeves, and a wide area at the hem. For jewelry she wore a long pearl necklace with a diamond clasp and matching earrings. Rand had given them to her mother to present them to Marian just before the wedding. Theyre beautiful. Marian ran her fingers across the smooth pearls. I have a surprise for you, too. This can be your something old. Her mother fastened a gold bracelet that had been Marians grandmothers around her wrist. Your sister got the earrings. I saved the bracelet for you. For my something blue I borrowed Chelseas blue garter. She slid it up her leg. Im ready. Dirk drove Marians mother, Marian, and Chelsea to his mothers house. He dropped them off at the back door so they could slip in without being seen by Rand. Chelsea hugged her the best she could around her large belly. She wore a lovely flowing blue gown. Im so happy. Well be living in the same area. Our children will grow up together and be cousins. How neat is that? If you hadnt kept encouraging me, this wouldnt be happening.

I dont believe that. Rand had his eye on you from the start. It just might have taken longer. She grinned. Ladies, its time. Mama Brodie beamed. Two beautiful, sweet daughters-in-law and soon grandbabies to spoil. She ushered them to the front door. Chelsea, when the music starts, youll follow the white satin runway to the gazebo. Marian will walk a short distance behind you. Mrs. Brodie and Marians mother hugged her. Her mother whispered, Be happy. They hurried toward the crowd sitting around the flower-covered gazebo. Theres the music, Chelsea said. She kissed Marians cheek. Good luck. Marian watched Chelsea. Then, when the distance seemed right, she started down the runway. She saw Rand in a tuxedo with Andy beside him as best man. Rands eyes were on her the whole way. When she got to him, he smiled and took her hand. The flare of electricity that sparked at their touch brought back their first meeting. Rands expression told her he was thinking of the same time. The minister started the ceremony. Rand spoke in a firm, warm voice. Marian was certain everyone could hear him. His eyes never left her face. When it was her turn, her voice trembled slightly. Rand tightened his grip on her hands and smiled at her. She took a deep breath and the words came out clearer. She had difficulty believing her dream had come true and this handsome man was really in love with her. Rand slid the wedding ring on her finger then kissed her hand. She said her words and slid his on. It was a bit wider than usual. Shed told him she wanted to be sure all those single women knew he was taken. Hed responded by reminding her that the gossip line would see that the information got around. I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride. Rand swept her into his arms, bent her backward, and gave her a big kiss. The guests cheered and clapped. After the wedding, the reception in the house was full of laughter and people enjoying meeting and talking. The two families meshed like theyd known each other for years. Andy congratulated them and apologized again to Marian. He told her he was truly sorry for interfering. She hugged him. Were going to be good friends. After all, we both love Rand.

Rand pulled her away from the crowd and whispered in her ear, Do you think theyll miss us if we run away? No, weve cut the cake, had the pictures taken, and said hello to everyone. And weve had toasts from Andy, my father, and Dirk. Good. I have my truck parked in the back. Casually, they moved toward the back door of the house. But as soon as they came out, their brothers and the two sisters threw the birdseed. You didnt really think youd escape us, did you? Dirk yelled. They rushed to the truck. Rand lifted her in, and they took off with cans rattling along behind them. It took very little time to get to their cabin. Rand carried her over the threshold. Welcome home, Mrs. Brodie. He put her down in front of the large fireplace. He lit a match, and the paper arranged around the logs caught fire. The flames flared bright. You were the prettiest bride ever. Rand cupped her face and kissed her. Im so glad I woke up to what I really wanted. When I saw Dirk and Chelsea at their wedding, they glowed, and they were always touching each other. I didnt have that, but I do now. You glow, and youre always reaching for my hand or touching my arm. You let me know youre there. What a great gift. Then he gave her his lopsided grin. I was just an ass when I wouldnt accept you sooner. I put us both through unnecessary anguish. She put her finger across his lips. Nothing but good thoughts from now on. Were married. Now wheres that champagne? You open it. Ill be right back. Marian admired the bedroom furniture theyd chosen and the cheerful bedspread and curtains. The cabin was homey and comfortable. She carefully removed her gown and bra. She left on the lacy panties and her garter belt and white hose. Her sheer white nightgown slid down her body. Before she went back to the great room, she slipped her high heels back on. When she opened the bedroom door, she put one leg out and peeked. Rand carried two glasses of champagne and almost dropped them. She moved completely out from behind the door and walked to the fireplace. On the day I die, this picture of you will still be burned on my brain. He handed her a glass. Drink up, wild woman. I cant wait to see you in action.

Marian took a sip of the cool liquid. Youre overdressed for the occasion, my love. She put down the glass and undid his tie. Then she started on the buttons to his shirt. When they were all undone, she pushed his shirt and jacket off. My turn. Rand caught the hem of her gown and pulled it over her head. She moved against him and rubbed her nipples across his hard, bare chest. Her arms went around his neck. Her breath caught when his warm hands cupped her full breasts. She stared into his silvery eyes as his fingers raked across her peaked nipples. Rand kissed her. His tongue moved inside her mouth and ran along the edge of her teeth before exploring the rest. Both of them were breathing hard when he pulled back. He kicked off his shoes and undid his slacks. He took them and his socks off. Now to unwrap the rest of you. His eyes gleamed with lust. Rand rolled the hose on her left leg down. He kissed her skin as he uncovered her. At her foot, he massaged her toes and her instep then kissed her ankle and the tender spot behind her knee. He did the same to the right leg. Her heartbeat pounded in her chest. She trembled from his slow seduction. She wanted to touch his cock, but he managed to stay out of reach. At last, he put his arms around her and unclasped her garter belt. In one sweep, he removed it and her panties. Much better. Although seeing you in that garter belt and hose made my cock rock hard. He lifted her and laid her on the thick rug by the fire. He handed her glass of champagne to her. To us. He made the toast. They clinked glasses and drank. Then he explored every spot on her body with his mouth, his hands, sometimes his teeth. Her body shook with desire as his mouth sucked on her clit. Moisture flowed out of her pussy. He licked along her lower lips. Ambrosia. Spreading her legs wider, he moved into position. He pressed in slowly. A desperate craving hit her. She raised her hips, trying to get him to move deeper and quicker. But he held back, whetting their appetite with deliberate, long, sliding glides in and out. He kissed her mouth and sucked on her breast. Heat flowed like warm honey through her veins. He kindled her desire from a spark to a voracious hunger. Inner contractions in her pussy caressed his pulsing cock. The aroma of their desire steamed around them, and as Rand slid in one more long stroke, Marian raised her hips and clenched tight, transporting them both into blissful pleasure. ****

She fell asleep in his arms. When the fire died down, Rand carried her to bed and pulled her back against him. He spooned into her s ss softness. He was finally really home.

Epilogue Five Months Later Marian pulled on a light jacket over her short-sleeved blue shirt. It had rained earlier, and the blowing wind made the air feel cool. Rand had gone to the barn/garage to get the truck and drive it to the front door. She glanced around the cabin shed come to love so much. After the big house was built, this place would still always hold a special place in her heart. Rand started to get out for her. She waved to stop him. Then she hurried out, stepping around puddles, and got into the truck. They didnt have to go far. Mama Brodie was having a party to celebrate Dirk and Chelseas twins being three months old. Everyone was overjoyed they were healthy, and the Brodie family finally had another girl. Are you feeling all right? Rand asked. You made me nervous jumping the puddles. You exaggerate. I didnt jump, and anyway Im fine. She kissed him. Weve managed to keep our secret. Shall we share it today? Im not sure I can hold it in much longer, Rand said and he grinned at her. Finding out their sexy honeymoon, or sometime soon after, had resulted in a pregnancy surprised and pleased them both. Marian hadnt been off her pills long, but the doctor said it sometimes happened that way. We dont want to steal the show away from the twins, Marian cautioned. No. Well wait a while until everyone has settled down and then drop our news. The sooner, the better. Now that my parents know, Mom is bound to forget and tell your mother, Marian said. Everyone came to the dinner. Graham came, but he still mentioned nothing about the mysterious lady visitor hed had. Rand had told Marian about her, and they were both curious as to her identity.

When Mama Brodie had them all at the table, everyone raised their glasses in a toast to the twins, whod gone to sleep after all the attention. She glanced down the table. Where is your wineglass, Marian? I didnt want any today. She held up her tea glass. She could almost see Mama Brodies mind whirling. You havent drunk wine at any family gathering since your wedding. Are you all right? Im fine. Rand took Marians hand. This seems to be a good time to tell you all our surprise. He glanced down at Marian with his lopsided smile that always made her warm and tingly inside. Were having a baby in about four months. All heads turned to Marian. But you dont look big enough, her sister-in-law said. Im tall enough to hide it behind loose slacks and tops. And we havent been out much. The other big news, Rand added. Weve just found out were expecting a girl. Oh my. Mama Brodie clasped her hands, and tears sparkled in her eyes. Another darling granddaughter. How wonderful. Not that we dont adore our one grandson. Heres a toast to all my grandchildren, future and present. Marian glanced around the room and saw the love in all their eyes. Rand kissed her hand. Happy? Im giddy with happiness. He raised his glass to her. Heres to my wild woman, he whispered in her ear. And she doesnt even need champagne. He winked and kissed her.

THE END
