GULGBT Committee Meeting Agenda 16th April 7pm Committee Room 4

Meeting started: 7.02pm Meeting adjourned: 9.34pm In Attendance: Lauren, Livvi, Jess, Colvin, Tabitha, Kirsty, Steen, Declan, Erin, Ciara, Amy, Chris, Hannah. Apologies: Becky. Committee Business: 1. Welcome and Guidelines! Lauren reminded committee to check e-mails regularly, not to just check Facebook. Also mentioned that committee should make sure that they come to meetings on time. a. SOEG Explanation Lauren now has Jess seat. However, there are two seats occupied by a rotating representative. If needing someone for this role: Colvin, Ciara or Amy. Trans* officer is required because no one on the board is qualified to cover trans* issues: Three meetings a year. This is run by the Sexual Orientation Equality Champion, also the woman from equality and diversity woman. Policies e.g: gender neutral toilets. They should be contacted with issues to do with name change more to do with courtesy and keeping them involved. b. Affiliations Everyone happy to affiliate with both the GUU and the QMU. GUU was used more this year, beneficial because of the space. 2. PHD research: PHD student: Doing research about the internet and its role in helping young people coming out. (Whether it is good or bad) She is looking to put together a focus group of volunteers. Most at the Lunchtime drop-in agreed, all at committee meeting agreed that research was interesting and involvement would be beneficial.

3. Events: a. End of Exams Ball Jess got an e-mail, asking if GULGBT would be interested in sending members to End of exams ball joined with Strathclyde/Caledonian - no date for this as of yet, starting 7pm, buffet, speeches then polo. Lauren to think of dates as to when to host this event. b. Pride Scotia and Glasgow Pride Pride in Edinburgh - June and Glasgow Saturday, 14th July Good for GULGBT/SRC presence at pride. (SORT OF UNRELATED WE NEED NEW FLAGS) Lauren get in touch with SRC and Paul? c. General Outline for Semester 1 Lauren gave out a hand-out. Ceilidh put in the same position because that is traditionally where it is. This is because it is good way to end/requires a lot of detail. Erin knows a good Ceilidh band. Steen: Fringe events, same-sex salsa Hannah: Different kinds of dancing were suggested. Things mentioned in members Questionnaire: dance classes, queer fest although perhaps on a smaller scale, murder mystery (maybe for Halloween) might make people less anxious in coming in a costume, Pub crawl. Members Questionnaire: There has to be a balance in social and welfare events, However, it can be difficult to have turn-out for welfare events. Coming out workshop might be good to invite parents etc Setting inside a campaigns-launch: A Wednesday, Bi-phobia is a big issue. Kirsty E-mailing Meg Barker, lectures at the open university on bi and queer issues. Perhaps in November, or semester 2? Lauren Masked ball could be organised for Queer Fest/ End of year dinner best kept for formal events. Wicked Wenches 7th of November. In place of cheese and wine, there might be enough time because of the proposed name change AGM (would doing this early put people off? Also taking into account the opinions of new members) Election for new people on the 3 October. Could be 17th-24th. Welfare event on the 3rd October must boost turnout at welfare event.

Ideas for welfare events more bisexual orientated event, more trans* information events two of these very well turned-out, interesting and informative. Campaign event - Queer 101 informative event about bi issues, asexuality, trans* etc. Could involve people outside LGBT, who are good speakers would make it more interesting, make people less ignorant. Colvin proposed including Genderqueer under Queer 101 ties in with one of the main aims of this years LGBT making it more inclusive. Perhaps bringing in a gender specialist, welfare-based event etc. Halloween event: Chris QUDOS - rocky horror picture night where people dress up. Look into ASAP. Steen bringing a straight person to each event, especially as people have been complaining about society not being inclusive. Jess will probably be Halloween themed thing at polo, could go there after polo. Lauren Feedback from Q more events that you can talk to people/have quizzes in committee room one. Grub crall/film screenings/pot luck dinner. Tom masterchef/come dine with me type event depends on finding a big kitchen. The duck? can bring own food, has 2 rooms which are not used all the time. Kirsty Dildo hockey/Safe-sex chat at Luke and Jack Dance event week before the ceilidh will get people excited about actually dancing. Could invite other unis in Glasgow QUDOS. Might be a way of boosting ticket sales. November 21st Bi*-event: they need to be better organized: Q Some were worried people were not bi enough, some were worried the event was not considering their sexuality, some were worried that it was not a safe-space - the bi-events have to be better organised to as not to upset anyone, the event has to be a least better worded How do we go about maintaining at bi* event (for bis, but people can come who arent bi its not anyones place who says who is and is not bisexual) Mistakes were made last year but we can learn from them. Colvin: Drag King/Drag Queen workshop organised over two days. Discussion with Virginia Gallery ensuring political correct drag queen. Look into SRC funding. d. Freshers Week and Freshers Fayre (12th September) i. International Students Orientation:

ii. Week before Freshers Week, could boost international membership Lauren e-mail and make sure youre in the international students brochure Putting stuff in international students freshers bag? . iii. LGBT Drop-in Tea: Good turn out last year, must be continued as it is valuable it is a definite. Everyone in committee should be on the stall at some point. Must make sure to get into SRC brochure, e. M&G Night Not in the food factory, requires somewhere more interesting. 19 th of September. f. Launch Night At Hillhead Library cheap, they let us get on with it and helped clean up at the end. However, law change means we cannot run own bar however at supermarket prices youd still make a profit. Cant put gay flag out does not make it a safe space. GMH make people fill out questionnaire issue. g. Scene Tour Wednesday, 10th of Octobe, also becomes national coming out today Cant be missed. Scavenger hunt and other incentives to keep people excited. h. M/W/T*/P-M Events i. Summer events? Post/mat: Having some kind of pub event and seeing what people want from there. Some kind of introductory meeting to introduce people into LGBT. Are we going to have a presence at pride? i. Book Club

Someone needs to chair it, people need to be there to suggest a book, including people outside of the society publicity is a big thing this year. Books dont have to be related to LGBT, venue changes for book club bibliocafe? More private places. Livvi perhaps the dates for meeting up should be advertised more.

Fringe Events

Asexual event last year shows it was a useful thing to have other suggestions are welcome something that is looked at as events come in.

4. AGM Amendments: Changing the use of trans to trans* - done. Election of first year officer: Name change: Members wanting to change name at AGM: An open questionnaire and then a closed one will help come to a decision. Could be sent out early but having a late closing date so freshers can be involved.Do not put things that have already been ruled out in the AGM. Kirsty: Blog post hinting on name change: LGBTQ, GUGSM. People in QMU/SRC could help in advertising name change, but will probably only be done after Christmas. Will be easier when guidelines are put in place.

5. Fundraising/Sponsorship Sponsorship packs sent out during the summer, no amount of money is to be sniffed at. Research people who are more willing to give to LGBT e.g.: Tunnocks. A lot of companies have charitable accounts we could look into more funding. Fundraising ideas: Bake sales are difficult, fundraising events which may involve a band/raffle may be difficult to organise, club night, game nights: take me out/family fortunes/blankety blank. A challenge night: Hannah: take me out, waxing legs, game-show night raises 600 at least Celidh should it be a fundraiser or charity giver?

6. Newsletter - Advertising who is leaving uni who will go from member to associate member. They can unsubscribe/resubscribe. 7. Next Meeting Committee meeting with hand over party Week beginning 21st of May before everyone disappears.
