Student involvement varies in Scripps

HANNAH GOODRICK hg074712@ohio.edu

With the copious amount of extracurricular programs that Scripps has to offer, why not get involved? With numerous organizations and publications, the chances to get involved are almost limitless. There has been plenty of talk that the current freshmen are not as active in Scripps as

freshmen typically have been in previous years; however, this may not be true. Several of this years freshmen are just as eager to get involved as any other year. A few of the editors-in-chief of Scripps publications have their ideas about the involvement of the years freshmen and students in general. The students within Scripps are very motivated to get involved right away because they know that it is important for their resumes, student-life and careers after college, said Shannon Miranda, editor-inchief of Backdrop Magazine. Miranda said that the motivation to get involved in Scripps definitely includes freshman, and it always has. The amount of new freshsee INVOLVEMENT page 3

SALLY ANN CRUIKSHANK

Is a doctorate student in her nal year of the PhD program
Have you stayed concentrated on the international studies focus?
Absolutely. I got the travel bug pretty early in life. My father won a trip to Portugal through his business when I was 13. I landed in Portugal and I exchanged money and everyone was speaking a different language and I went to a bull ght and I just thought theres something to this travel thing. So Ive pretty much focused on travel my whole life.

Students hard work in Scripps might have had a part in the schools potential reaccreditation. | Daniel Rader

Where are you headed after completing your PhD?

I just accepted a job as an Assistant Professor of Journalism at Auburn University in Alabama. Im really excited. Its a 10-year track job so in ve years I will hopefully be promoted to Associate Professor and get tenure, which means I can basically stay there as long as I want. I really, really love teaching. Ive been teaching at OU for ve years now. I started teaching as soon as I got here and Ive taught everything from broadcast classes to multimedia reporting to theory to ethics a little bit of everything. I also really love doing research. Im very fortunate that I get to do research that I think makes a difference and that I personally enjoy. So I really love the combination of research and teaching. Being in academia and becoming a professor lets me do that. Sally Ann Cruikshank defended her dissertation on Monday, Feb. 25

Scripps will have to pass two more rounds of evaluation before the reaccreditation can be nalized. The site team leader will report their ndings from their visit to the accrediting committee at a meeting in Chicago in March. This meeting will review all of the schools that were up for reaccreditation this year and each site team will make their recommendation to ACEJMC and answer any questions that they may have. Professor Stewart will be in attendance at this meeting to answer any further questions that the committee may have. The committee will then vote whether or not to accept the recommendation. Its quite unusual that they wouldnt accept it, said Stewart. They really respect the work of the site team. The accreditation may be nalized in May at the accrediting councils meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The accreditation will be valid for the next six years. I know Scripps is one of the top ten in the nation and that is why I decided to come here, said Christine Zhao a secondyear masters student studying journalism. Scripps has been one of the few accredited journalism schools in the country for the past 60 years and plans to continue to maintain a strong program for students. This is really important because it makes me feel good when someone says, oh you went to Scripps at OU, said Holly Storrow, a news and information major.

and freshman involvement. Our staff is at about the same size it was last year, so I feel like for all the seniors we may have lost, we gained freshmen or other students, Coletta said. She does not see a lack in student involvement within Scripps. She believes that this year freshmen involvement might be higher than ever for Speakeasy. A steady number of freshmen have been coming into the publications that are available through Scripps; however, organizations on a larger scale like SPJ are lack-

ing in current freshmen and new student involvement. Sandhya Kambhampati, president of SPJ, is not sure why the current freshmen lack involvement in SPJ, but believes that the recent choice to merge SPJ and RTDNA will add to the organizations numbers. The Scripps students that are involved in organizations or publications denitely have an upper hand when it comes to rst-hand experience in the journalism eld. Becoming involved is easy; it is only a matter of actually doing it.

men involved with Backdrop this year has been pretty similar to the past few years. At the beginning of fall semester, I would estimate that we had about 60-70 new freshmen, Miranda said. The numbers in freshmen involvement seem to be steady throughout the years for Backdrop, but what about other publications? ists Sandhya Kambhampati belives twitter is important for journalism of resourchas students for networking with other people in the field. It is a good way to reach out to sources and find out what stories people are talking about. Twitter has an entire section dedicated to trending topics which indicate what Twitter users are currently talking about. It is an easy way to nd out current topics. News sources tweet numerous times a day, meaning that information is being sent out to people all over the world every minute. By the press of a button information is be-

ing shared to millions of people in seconds. Twitter connects people faster than ever and is convenient to journalists everywhere. Ive found a couple of my stories and have networked with journalists because of Twitter, said Kambhampati. Throughout the past few years, Twitter has changed the world of journalism. It has added an entire new branch of journalism. [Twitter] has created new levels of competition and a new landscape for sharing content, said Dan Farkas, instructor at Scripps.

The Internet changed the way journalists publish their stories; Twitter changed the way journalists distribute their stories to their readers all across the globe. People can follow different news sources and can easily share their favorite stories, said Sara Nealeigh, RTDNA president. Twitter has an incredulous amount of users that are able to obtain the information journalists are putting out into the world. INC is on Twitter !
