THE LOVE OF money is the root of all evil is a passage weve all
heard but, love it or loath it, filthy lucre is what we are all in business
to raise. However, we are surrounded by people who explain that we
cant expand our businesses unless we borrow money.
Without meaning to put on another scratched record, this means the
small business owner has to kow-tow to the banks all of which, as
has been well reported, are reluctant to let their cash flow in the
direction of what they perceive to be a risk.
It really isnt for the likes of me to comment on who should or
shouldnt be eligible for a bank loan apart from anything else, I really
have no idea but what does seem clear is that the biggest change in
the market is happening right now.
You will have read in this magazine before and seen with your own
eyes the expansion of service centres such as the chain now
branded as Halfords. Youll know about the tussles for business at the
larger end of the soft-franchise networks. You will have seen how
these operations relentlessly target newer cars just coming out of
warranty or even newer cars serviced under block exemption rules.
I guess the question for the independent will be how to compete
with this phenomenon. One option is to get a much bigger building,
some more staff and a few pot plants in order to play the neon-sign
boys at their own game. Another is to specialise on one marque or
specific skill to get yourself known as an expert. Either of these options
will involve getting the bank to cough up so you can invest in the future
and from there, we are back to square one.
By now you will be sick and tired of people banging on about the
budget and Im going to tire you further by saying that the Chancellor
wasted an opportunity this time by not providing any incentive to the
money houses to help businesses grow. Many workshops will remain
stuck in the past, unable to create jobs or wealth. In turn, this will
mean that the economy will continue to flatline and this will be no
good to anyone.
The love of money might be the route of all evil but its the lack of it
which truly brings us down. The Chancellor would do well to bear this
in mind when he next decides to hit us where it hurts.

MOTOR CODES has revealed the
nations 100 most trusted garages,
following six weeks of voting by
thousands of motorists.
Championing the UKs best

In brief
INDUSTRY watchdog Motor Codes
has lent its support to a government
proposal to introduce a new
medium for garage customers to
complain to.
One of the key points will be the
Trading Standards Institute (TSI) to
establish a successor to the
Consumer Code Approval Scheme
(CCAS) from April 2013. The moves
will also see the creation of National
Trading Standards Board (NTSB) to
deliver the strengthened
enforcement of consumer
protection and combating of rogue
traders.
Under the plan, the OFT will no
longer have the responsibility of
delivering consumer advice and a
new Competition and Markets
Authority will be formed to take
over from the OFTs Competition
Commission.
The proposed new structure will
be self-regulated and Motor Codes
sees itself as being in the middle of
it. Chris Mason, managing director
at Motor Codes said:
Motor codes already has a strong
working relationship with Trading
Standards, with Ron Gainsford OBE,
TSI chief executive, chairing our
compliance panel. We look forward
to working with TSI enhancing the
current consumer codes model and
will continue to offer support to
Citizens Advice through our
established advice and conciliation
service.
The proposal is part of the
ongoing review of the motor trade.
If approved, it will become part of
two customer charters for the
industry, namely the Service and
Repair Code for workshops and the
New Car Code for showrooms.

Shortage forces closure
TESCO has announced closure of
its Tesco Cars online supermarket
exactly 12 months after a high-
profile launch.
It appears that the underlying
reason for the closure was poor
supply of vehicles. The business
sourced cars direct from leasing
companies.
"Customer response was positive
but good supply early on was
difficult. Supply started to open up
a bit but at that point, we looked at
the business again and decided to
focus on our core business," a
spokesman said.
Tesco Cars never revealed how
many cars it was selling, although it
claimed 500,000 visitors in its first
full month.
The statement read: We started
Tesco Cars in good faith and we
always aim to do a good job for
customers. However, following a
review of the business model, we
and Carsite have decided that we
cannot offer customers a
satisfactory range of vehicles and as
a result, have decided it is right to
close the business.
A call to the company confirmed
that the site will be closed with
immediate effect but Tesco
Autocentres and Tesco Tyres remain
unaffected.

IAAF rebukes cheap slur
LAST month, we reported on how
Nissan promoted its new menu
servicing products with the
unfortunate headline fix the price,
not the car.
The press release described the
interim service packages being
offered at a price that would make
independent garages squirm and
described such operations as under
the arches businesses.
Not surprisingly, this wording has
provoked a reaction from the
aftermarket. Brian Spratt of the
IAAF said: Its a cheap slur from
Nissan on the quality of most
independent garages. I know
several excellent service centres run
from business premises underneath
railway arches, it doesnt stop them
being very good professional
businesses, servicing their
customers cars to the highest
standards. All this really means is
that efficient, economic and
convenient local independent
garages have given Nissan dealers a
bloody nose and now theyre using
cheap comments to try and regain
the business. Its pathetic!
Ironically, the price of a full
service at a Nissan dealer is unlikely
to make an independent, or anyone
else, squirm. At 229 for an all over
check it is roughly equal to the rest
of the market.

Pothole fund questioned
A SUM of money has been pledged
to the government to move away
from simply patching up urban
and rural roads and creating a
culture of continuous maintenance.
However a road safety charity has
questioned if the money will even
cover basic repairs.
Minister for Local Transport
Norman Baker has launched a
review of the crumbling holes. He
also spoke about how it would be
cheaper and more desirable to
maintain roads rather than the
patch and mend approach
currently employed. The minister
has pledged 3bn of improvements
over four years.
Ian Best, Chairman of the
Institute of Advanced Motorists
was not impressed with the
announcement: 3bn over four
years is less than a quarter of what
councils need to get the roads back
into shape. [The money] equates to
around 20 per driver a year, a
small amount in comparison to the
money spent on car taxes and
duties.
Last year, a warranty company
calculated the average claim for
even minor suspension repairs was
several hundred pounds. Although
undesirable, the state of the
nations roads has generated extra
work for garages and bodyshops in
recent years.

New Transit debuts at CV Show
A BRAND NEW generation of
Transit vans was launched by Ford
at the recent CV Show in the NEC.
The vehicle has substantially
different styling to its industrial-
looking predecessor.
To begin with, all Euro V models
feature start-stop systems
controlled by a combined
starternator unit. The vehicle also
has a wider load width as well as a
hatch in the load area bulkhead to
accommodate awkward objects.
Additionally, the newcomer has
a long options list, such as a rear
view mirror that doubles as a
reversing screen on some models.
Buyers can also opt for a roof rack
that folds flat on the roof when
not in use as well as external tie-
down and fixing hooks.
The Transit was not the only
new vehicle launched at the show.
Chinese firm Great Wall introduced
a double cab pickup model that
will retail for around 13,500.
The newcomer will be known
as the Steed in Europe as the
importer wisely decided that
the domestic market model name
of Wingle just wouldnt cut it
with European buyers.

Health and Safety vital
says IGA director
COMPLYING WITH HSE
regulations is often seen as simply
more red tape to tie up but a spate
of recent accidents in garages has
left trade body the RMI warning
garages that they face more than a
fine if they dont comply.
Health and safety compliance is
vital to ensure a garage is running
both safely and legally said Stuart
James, RMI Director, Independent
Garage Association (IGA).
Following reports from the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
that there have been over 8000
injuries and 24 deaths in the motor
vehicle repair industry over the last
5 years, the IGA are urging all
garage owners to ensure that their
health and safety processes are
up date.
James continued A recent
accident in a garage resulted in a
young apprentice being set on fire
and badly injured. The HSE, which
investigated the incident, stated
the company did not have a safe
system of work for handling,
storing or using flammable
substances. Events like this remind
us all of the importance of having
strict safety guidelines in place.
From October 2012 the HSE
will impose a charge on any garage
that is found to have health and
safety breaches, no matter how
minor. In the past the garage
would receive a letter in the first
instance, outlining what areas they
need to improve on. However,
there will now be a charge included
in that letter under its cost
recovery scheme.
It is imperative that garages
stay compliant with health and
safety legislation to not only ensure
their teams safety but to make sure
they do not incur any charges
during their HSE inspection.
RMI offers its members a fully
rounded health and safety support
package that enables them to
be up to date and in line
with legislation.

AN INDUSTRY figure has slammed
vehicle manufacturers for being
slow to release technical
information.
Stuart James, director of the RMIs
Independent Garage Association
(IGA) was speaking to fleet
operators at the BVRLA Technical
and Operational Management
Forum in March.
During the IGA-led session, James
outlined the problems independent
garages are currently experiencing
when trying to access technical
information from vehicle
manufacturers. Under current
legislation, car manufacturers have
an obligation to provide technical
service bulletins, recall information,
online diagnosis and software
updates for new cars.
James stated that Vehicle
manufacturers must comply with
European legislation and make their
technical information available to
independent garages
He continued A detailed study
carried out recently confirms that
access to this information is still
proving difficult for an independent
garage to obtain.
The report highlights some key
areas of concern. Garages were
unable to access fault codes from
half of vehicle manufacturers and
part numbers were unavailable in
many cases. Many vehicle
manufacturers are failing to provide
quality technical support to
independent workshops, support
that is vital if they are to carry out
repairs on the latest vehicles
effectively.
Independent garages need this
information and the IGA is
committed to ensuring that our
members have access to it, allowing
them to continue operating in a
market place which is becoming
more technology focussed.

NEW STATISTICS from the
Department for Transport show
the number of vehicles with a tax
disc has increased over the last
year by 0.3%.
While new registration figures
were down 1.5% on 2010, the
number of vehicles in use went up.
The DfT attributes this to the
governments scrappage scheme,
which took a vast number of cars
off the road during that year.
For the first time, the sale of
diesel cars has overtaken petrol,
accounting for just over 50% of
the market. Most analysts believe
this to be a high point as the
rising cost of derv and increasing
complexity of the fuel systems look
set to make them a fringe choice
once again.
For all of the hype, battery
powered cars or pure EVs were a
statistically insignificant part of the

Data shows average emissions
have decreased by nearly a quarter
over the past ten years and is most
likely due to the addition of

Steering and suspension
work is at a record high
but for how much longer?
WE SEE them everywhere particularly in the gap between the
winter frost and the new financial year and, while they are a pain
for motorists, there is no doubt that they are something we are
reluctantly in favour of.
Potholes cause millions of pounds of damage to cars every year
and, while we are not clear on whether the roads are worse or
suspension is more likely to be damaged on heavier modern
vehicles, the issue has become highly politicised. So much so that
Minister for Local Transport Norman Baker has launched a review
of the crumbling holes, saying: We all know the misery that
potholes can cause to highway users and local communities and the
recent series of harsh winters has only served to intensify the
situation. He went on to talk about how it would be cheaper and
more desirable to continuously maintain roads rather than the
patch and mend approach currently employed.
The minister has pledged 3bn of improvements over four years,
which sounds a lot until you consider the amount of roads and the
volume of vehicles in the country. Pointing this out, Ian Best,
Chairman of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, has said: 3bn
over four years is less than a quarter of what councils need to get
the roads back into shape. The money equates to around 20 per
driver a year, a small amount in comparison to the money spent on
car taxes and duties.
We reckon that patched-up roads and a steady stream of worn-
out ball joints and broken springs will be with us for a while yet.

REVIEW: Transport minister says patch and mend approach does not work
The Pothole
Review has
arrived
Greg Whitaker
LAST MONTH, we reported how garage owner John Tullett
had been pursued by a collecting agency for a licence to
use a radio in his workshop. Mr. Tullett already had a
permit from a copyright society known as PRS For Music
but another organisation called PPL also demanded that
he pay for a second licence with a chain of
correspondence that he found threatening in nature.
Following these events, Mr. Tullett wrote to his local MP,
who happened to be the ex-Minister for Culture Media
and Sport, Tessa Jowell. Ms Jowell was interested in the
issue and she in turn wrote a Lady named Baroness
Wilcox who is the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State
for Business Innovation and Skills.
Code of conduct
Baroness Wilcox sent a reply detailing the role of various
performance licences but concluded with a reference to
the Hargreaves Review a report that has been
commissioned to look at private societies collecting
money ostensibly for the same service. She wrote:
The Government is aware of concerns raised by small
businesses in particular about the practices of some
collecting societies and my department has been
working closely with them to encourage them to behave
fairly and transparently to licensees. I met with
representatives of PPL in March 2012 to discuss the
issues raised by small businesses. As I have
mentioned, PPL have introduced a code of practice
which set out the service their customers can expect
and I view this as a positive development.
The Rt. Hon. Lady went on to mention that a consultation
on proposals to reform copyright framework to encourage
innovation and growth had closed at the end of March
and that one of the proposals was to regulate and enforce
a code of conduct on collecting societies such as PPL.
Watch this space.

A Seat Leon turns up at
D&D Autos with an
unusual problem
WE HAVE great working relationships with the local dealers in our
area and whenever possible, we are happy to lend a helping hand.
This month we had a Seat Leon brought to us by a local franchise
(though not a Seat dealer.) The issue with the vehicle was that it
would not switch off whilst the key was in the ignition, so the only
means of switching the engine off was to stall it, which was hardly
practical.
Intermittent
Unfortunately, as with a lot of
faults I see, it was an intermittent
fault. The dealer had attempted
to fix the problem by fitting an
ignition switch but this resulted in the car not being able to run at
all. Unable to diagnose the fault, they decided to call upon my
services as we are specialists in various brands of vehicles, Seat being
one of them.
As the situation seemed a little odd, I connected the Autologic
tool and ran a scan to see what faults were stored in the whole
vehicle. The information showed power supply issues to several
ECUs. I traced this to a fuse being blown, by using wiring diagrams.
Duly replaced, the vehicle was now a runner and so I was able to test
the vehicle for the original fault.
All the power supply fault codes had cleared and the vehicle was
fully functioning but the ABS traction light and the steering assistant
light were both on permanently. The customer was happy that the
vehicle now switched off and took the vehicle away with the ABS
and steering lights on. However, the customer returned a couple of
days later saying that the vehicle would not switch off again. The
vehicle was left with me again but the vehicle would not do the fault
for me the joys of intermittent faults! I decided to look further into
the ABS traction and steering assistant faults to see if they were
linked to the issue.
Wiring nightmare
One fault code logged the rear left speed sensor so I decided to start
there and have a look at what the cause of that was. Upon testing, I
found that both wires to the Hall-effect wheel speed sensor were 12
volts. I suspected the wires may be
shorted together causing the
fault, so using the multimeter I did
some testing and found there
were indeed two wires shorting
out together. Further testing
revealed there were a total of five
wires shorted together, two were for the wheel speed sensor and
three for the power supplies from the fuse box, two terminal 30
power supplies and one terminal 15 power supply.
Upon further testing of the wiring, I found part of the loom
chaffed on the battery tray. Checking the wires against the wiring
diagram I found one of the wires was bridged to the terminal 30 and
one was chaffing against terminal 15. This was the ignition supply
relay which I suspected was causing the vehicle not to switch off
occasionally. The other two wires remained connected to the near
side rear wheel speed sensor. I then repaired the wiring, re-checked
the ABS system and found that it had damaged the ABS ECU. I had
to replace this along with the ABS pump as it had a common fault
for the brake pressure sender. Once I had fitted this, the vehicle ran
with no issues and all the lights cleared.
Equipment
It pays to have the right equipment and the right diagrams to help
diagnose obscure faults such as this one. Its all too easy to try to
diagnose a customers fault by throwing parts at the job, which can
be costly for the customer. I find the best way to tackle tricky jobs is
to be methodical.

James Dillon encourages
garages to use oscilloscopes
wherever possible
FOLLOWING ON from last months article about pressure transducer
testing, I have had correspondence from general repair workshops
and garages that are new to diagnostics asking why I focus on
oscilloscopes so often. One garage owner told me that although they
enjoy the articles, they get a little lost when oscilloscopes are
mentioned. Several of the people I spoke to didnt have a scope, just
a scan tool, though a few possessed a scope which was integrated
into their existing scan tool (mainly Bosch and Snap-on).
Wide scope
Scopes are difficult to use is a comment Ill agree with if youve not
had relevant training or youve had training but havent put the time
in to practice what youve learnt on good vehicles. In these difficult
trading conditions, differentiating yourself from the competition is a
smart thing to do. Every man and his dog now claim to do
diagnostics, when in fact what they may be doing is pulling
diagnostic trouble codes and throwing parts darts at the fault until
the problem is solved, or the customer runs out of confidence, or
money.
Doing diagnostics properly (which is very different from owning a
scan tool and putting we do diagnostics on your website or leaflets),
can set your business apart from the crowd. In my locality, the low
end of the market do diagnostics (a code read) for 20. The Fast
Fits charge around 40+vat for the same service. We sometimes get
people phoning up asking do you do diagnostics? Ill respond by
asking what are they actually looking for? Well, Ive got this problem
xyz..., and they go into the detail of the vehicles symptoms. Sure,
I say. I can take a look. I then explain our approach to charging and
the value of a proper diagnostic process and the response is, Well
Fred only charges 35 and the rapid fit charge only 40.
Too soon
My response to this is Youve come to me too soon in the process.
What do you mean? they say. The process goes a little like this;
the garage offering cheap diagnostics will put their code reader on
your car and pull a fault code and then fit a part which most closely
relates to that fault code. Right, the customer responds pensively.
When that part fails to cure your problem, theyll then tell you that
this is what their machine told them to replace. After several
replacement component guesses, your bill will be far more expensive
than if youd brought it to me in the first place. Youll have spent a
few hundred pounds and may be no closer to the fix. However, on
the up side, youll be in the right part of the process to appreciate
that what is initially cheap diagnostics rapidly becomes very poor
value. At this point the phone goes silent for a moment or two
whilst the potential customer absorbs the implications of the scenario.
Some customers will then book it in with me, others will take their
chances with the throwers of parts darts.
How is this relevant to oscilloscopes, I hear you ask? Well, what
often makes the difference in the diagnostic process is the
oscilloscopes ability to allow you to verify the root cause of the
customers symptoms. It can also process a wide variety of data much
faster than a scan tool and can, therefore, detect problems that the
scan tool cannot. Its the old story that the scan tool works in a virtual
world within the bounds and limitations of the ECUs processed data,
whereas the scope has a free reign to sample lots of data from
everywhere.

The experts at Road Runner
Insurance explain the
difference between different
types of motor trade cover
EVERYONE IN the garage trade has to be covered by the correct
insurance, whether its domestic insurance or trade cover, but how do
they differ? Well, the major difference between a private motor policy
and a motor trade policy is that
a private policy specifies the
vehicle and the driver. A motor
trade one specifies the driver
only, not the vehicle, so you can
drive any vehicle for motor trade
purposes and you dont have to
take out separate policies for each vehicle.
A motor trade policy is a policy that covers a motor trader to drive
any vehicle that is their property and any vehicle under his custody
or control for motor trade purposes. This is vital when a motor
trader has several vehicles in his care i.e. customers vehicles and
demonstration use (including testing of customers vehicles and
demonstration of vehicles for sale). Cover can also be provided for
used cars (including those either on a forecourt or standing on the
road) and the proprietors own vehicles.
The big question is: To what extent do you want to protect your
and your customers vehicles? Third Party Only (TPO) insurance is the
minimum legal requirement for vehicles to be driven on public roads.
TPO insurance will only cover loss, damage or injury inflicted on a
third party. If you have Third Party Only insurance, your own losses,
damage or injury (apart from passengers) will not be covered.
Someone in the garage trade therefore really needs extra protection
for his vehicles above this basic Third Party requirement.
Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT) is a step-up from Third Party Only.
TPFT pays out in the event of loss or damage to vehicles under the
motor traders custody or control in the event of theft or fire, as well
as third party damage or injury claims. This is particularly relevant if
vehicles are stolen and torched. However, this level of cover is very
rarely used nowadays as the cost is no longer significantly different to
comprehensive cover.
A comprehensive policy includes the same cover as TPO & TPFT plus
accidental damage to the vehicles that the trader owns or has care of.
So, if a customers vehicle is damaged in an accident while being
tested, comprehensive cover will cover the cost of the repairs.
Liability Insurance
Workshops and garages might have more than their fair share of
customer gripes but the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) says that by far
the greatest number of consumer complaints, over 68,000 in 2008,
relate to second-hand cars. What
happens when things do go
wrong? A motor trader may be
completely innocent of the charge
laid against him or his business but
a disgruntled customer can still
take him to court. The burden of
proof in such cases relies heavily
on the customer bringing the complaint but the legal defence costs
for the trader can be huge, even if the case is not proven. With the
growth of no win, no fee legal services now available, the public is
being encouraged to seek compensation for almost any mistake,
whether innocent or intended.
Necessity
Public Liability Insurance, while not compulsory for motor traders, is a
necessity and is not expensive. If a motor trader operates from
premises or invites customers into his workshop or garage, he owes
them a duty of care his liability or obligation to provide a safe
environment.
It doesnt take much imagination to see a situation where a visiting
customer trips over a jack, breaks a limb and then sues. Without
public liability insurance, the trader and his business could suffer.
Duty of care
When a technician undertakes work for a customer, he has an
obligation to carry out that work with a duty of care. For example, if
he fits a new handbrake and that handbrake fails and causes damage

or injury to the customer or
another third party, he could
be liable. As in all negligence
cases, the defendant is
innocent until proven guilty.
The customer must prove that
the motor trader was
negligent but the cost of the
motor traders legal defence
could be enormous. Servicing
and Defective Workmanship
liability insurance, which is
normally included in a Public
Liability policy, would cover
the motor traders defence
costs and any damages or
costs awarded if the case is
proven. Liability insurance
does not cover the cost of any
fines imposed in the case,
breaches in health and safety
for example.
Whos liable?
Product Liability Insurance is
another benefit of a Liability
policy. If a mechanic fitted a
faulty part to a vehicle which
is proved to have caused
damage or injury to a third
party, he or his business could
be liable. Despite the fact that
the part was at fault, the
contract of sale was between
the trader and his customer.
The customer can therefore
sue the mechanic or his
employers business for
compensation for injury or
damage caused by the faulty
part. The traders insurers
would then sue the part
manufacturer to recover any
losses, if the case is proven.
Employers Liability
Insurance is a compulsory legal
requirement if you employ
someone, even if its only a
part-timer thats paid a few
pounds to wash the cars. The
policy ensures that you are
protected in the event one of
your employees suffers death,
injury or disease arising out of
and in the course of their
employment. From 1st April
2012, there is a new
requirement to centrally record
basic details of all EL insurance
policies. This is being managed
by the Employers Liability
Tracing Office or ELTO (of
which Roadrunner Insurance is
a member.) You can read more

Keep it

Late payment remains an issue for small
businesses as they struggle to stay afloat in the
UKs unpredictable economy
CHASING LATE payments is a daily reality for any
business, no matter how large or small. Encouragingly,
however, research reported by debt collection agency
Hilton-Baird has found that while the UKs small to
medium enterprises (SMEs) are still feeling the pinch,
they are adopting a back to basics approach to credit
control in a bid to ease the pressures of late payment.
The research, which surveyed 247 business owners
during January 2012, found SMEs are taking a stance in
order to stay on top of their credit management and
reduce the likelihood of late payment.
According to the report, there has been a significant
rise in the use of reminder letters and calls and
suspending work and services. Other popular credit
management strategies include credit insurance while
almost half are credit checking new customers.
As a result of this approach, the payment
performance or amount of debt collected by UK
businesses, improved during the second half of 2011.
Shorter time
Businesses are now waiting an average of 17 days
beyond their agreed credit terms to be paid by their
customers, which is a full five days sooner than in the
preceding six months to July 2011. There was also an
encouraging fall in the age of respondents debtor
books, with 66% now classifying less than 10% as more
than 90 days old, up from 57% in July.
Although alternative options are available, the
situation has been antagonised by the winding down of
HM Revenue & Customs Time To Pay scheme.
Worryingly, only 69% of the one in five applying to defer
the repayment of their tax arrears in the second half of
2011 had their applications accepted. This clearly
indicates the importance for businesses to be wary as to
whom they supply goods and services to in the months
ahead, particularly given the uncertain economic
prospects.
Despite the evidence that some businesses are
tackling payment issues head on, there still remains a
number of worrying trends. The latest research shows
that only 18% of all firms reported no delay in payment
in the last six months, though only one in four said they
would consider charging interest on late payment in the
next six months.

Vehicle and liability insurance are separate
Just because your garage doesnt buy or sell cars
you will still need a motor trade insurance policy to
drive a variety of vehicles. The good news is that it
is quite cheap compared with domestic policies.
Exactly the same rules apply to mobile technicians,
although premiums may differ between insurance
companies as they calculate risks in a number of
ways. It pays to get a variety of quotes first.
Note that cover to drive other vehicles is not the
same as liability insurance even if the cover is
comprehensive. You will need a separate policy for
each.

Think commercial
insurance is a waste of
money? Neil Pattemore
urges you to think again
ECONOMIC recession and increasing litigation often go hand in hand.
There are few industries which are exempt and the outcome of any
successful action can be an expensive compensation package. So
when does needing to comply legally and being sensible overlap? If
you employ people, you are legally obliged to have a minimum 5M
of Employers Liability cover and a business risks a fine of 2,500 for
each day it is not able to produce evidence of suitable insurance.
Other insurance cover should also be considered and, in some cases,
your customers may stipulate it as part of a contract before working
with you. Typically, this will include Public Liability cover, which is
usually at least 2M cover but there are many other considerations.
Keep it covered
When it comes to business insurance its easy to see it as an
unnecessary cost but the sensible option is to ensure you understand
what you need and then consider how to minimise the costs. It is not
just about covering the risk but more about the cost of the
consequence should the worst occur. In other words, can you afford
NOT to have insurance?
Importantly, consider how to ensure that you minimise any risk, as
this will not only be good practice but may decrease your insurance
premiums as well. There are several basic areas to cover including the
security and safety of premises, signage for customer safety when
they are on your premises, the safety of staff whilst at work (you
have a legal duty of care for your employees) and process
documentation of your service and repair procedures (with a quality
check before a vehicle is handed back to the customer). After all,
insurance companies are in the business of risk assessment, so give
them reasons to view you as a lower risk. Equally, always check that
you are getting the best value for money from your current policies;
its easy to renew but probably cheaper to shop around.
False economy
Maggie Craig, from the Association of British Insurers, said: "People
with questions about their insurance should always talk to their
insurer or an insurance broker to make sure they have the right level
of cover for their needs." I realise there can be an almost endless list
of potential insurance cover options but here are some pointers of
how to approach getting the best cover for your business. The first is
to do everything you can to assess the risks and minimise them, then
talk to a good insurance broker. Online policies may appear to be
cheaper but can be a false economy. Secondly, disclosure is key.
Holding back something that is relevant will be a false economy if it
means your claim is later turned down. If in doubt, always tell your
insurer. Thirdly, there are insurance packages that include certain
covers, such as public liability as standard, but you can also add-on
options that you need for contents, stock and buildings. These
packages bundle everything together for the motor trade, so you get
the cover you need. Fourthly, increase the excess on your policy. Most
policies start with an excess, by increasing this, your premium will
normally reduce.
Asset protection
Ensure that your property insurance protects the assets of your
business against loss or damage. Some examples of the types of
assets include buildings, general contents, machinery and stock.
Cover is often provided on an all-risks basis and will include theft.
Furthermore, consider other types of protection that include business
interruption, which could be as diverse as a burst water main, a
crime scene restricting access or a fire at your premises. If your stock,
contents and IT systems were destroyed, along with damage to the
building which requires repair, the right level of cover would enable
you to continue to trade while your premises are being repaired and
would offer cover for any loss of business during this time. So assess
what you need, work to minimise the risks that exist, talk to the
experts, disclose the details truthfully and benefit from getting the
cover you need at a cost that reflects your business needs. Good
business practice and peace of mind now thats a good policy!

Are you liable for defective parts?
You should be aware of the wider impact of product liability
legislation. Defective or dangerous products are the cause of
thousands of injuries every year in the UK, yet product liability is
an insurance option which many small business owners
commonly overlook.
Even if you have done everything to ensure the quality of
products you have supplied, in these changing times, a parts
manufacturer may no longer be in business or the importer can't
be traced, meaning you could be held responsible for a costly
claim which could cripple your business if there is no obvious
right of recourse from the manufacturer. Ask your insurance
provider what the situation would be in that position.

As part of our focus on
finance and insurance, Mike
Owen looks at issues around
the filthy lucre
WHEN TIMES are tight, its all too easy to look to finance as a method
of bridging the void in everyday cash flow and at insurance as
unnecessary cost.
Whilst it's easy to feel persecuted in times of recession, you are not
alone in your suffering your customers and your suppliers are both
equally feeling the pinch. It is a quirk of mankind that in times like
these, people find somebody else to blame and to pay for the
position they find themselves in. This creates a ladder effect; your
customers blame you and you blame your suppliers. Too often this
results in confrontation, normally based around terms of contract and
what either party thought was going to happen. In the worst case
scenario the matter ends up in the hands of the legal vultures. If
your company is not going to be
adversely affected, you need to
have excellent insurance cover in
place but you still have an
important part to play.
Now, don't get me started on
insurance companies! We have
all heard insurance companies sobbing crocodile tears and
expounding on how they are not making any money from motor car
insurance the cynic in me asks isnt their risk spread over their
portfolio of products and reviewing their profits would suggest that
they are still doing quite nicely. Unfortunately an awful lot of garages
have emulated the folly of selling price alone but without the same
range of products, so these days they dont make any money.
Insurance companies are risk averse; what does that mean? Quite
simply, it means they don't want their trousers taken off by insuring
risks that are not a good bet. Insurance is there to cover the insured
against the risk of an unlikely event, not against a racing certainty in
which the insured could be construed as a contributing factor. The
lower the risk (proven by auditable policies and procedures) the lower
should be the premium, in theory.
As garage businesses, our customers select us based on their belief
in our competency and ability to deliver their requirements. To honour
this trust we must ensure that we have all our ducks in a row and
that they, the customer and their property are protected and these
insurance premiums have to be funded from profits.
Insurance
Before anybody puts forward the fact that I may show bias in favour
of the Institute of the Motor Industry, I do. I sit on several of their
committees and pledge allegiance to their commitment to making our
industry measurably proficient. Their accredited ATA programme for
technicians and other members of staff is, I feel, an entry point for
being in our industry.
So where is this conversation going? A couple of weeks ago,
working with a client business, I sat in on their negotiations with a
new, prospective insurance company. I must say that I was impressed
by the insurance companys searching questions and more impressed
by my client's ability to satisfy those questions and their actions to
avoid risk. During these questions ATA, as a method of answering the
thorny question of duty of care and of showing diligence on behalf of
business, ticked all the boxes.
On the subject of buying insurance; do your shopping in advance.
Just as there are ambulance chasers in the personal injury arena there
are collectives who offer your risk at so-say beneficial rates to you
and even better commissions to them. Sometimes they are the best
option, sometimes.
Please don't wait for your insurance reminder to arrive on your
desk or, worse, for the agent to be in your office before you consider
how you can limit risks within your business. The danger is that when
faced with a direct question you will give an answer that will satisfy
the immediate need but expose you in case of a subsequent claim.
On the subject of finance, let me make a statement of the blindingly
obvious; it's not the interest that is
expensive, it is repaying the capital.
Another fact that is fundamental
to taking on finance is that if the
capital purchase is not going to
generate a return dont buy it.
Capital idea
I'm on record as extolling the virtues of making capital purchases early
in a company, as having the equipment on hand can often give the
company leverage in the marketplace by offering services their
competitors cannot satisfy. This does not suggest frivolous or nice to
have purchases. For every item that you buy on behalf of your
company you need to have a timeline for replacement and profit-line
to amortise the cost; failure to satisfy these simple criteria means you
are just guessing.
Without doubt, no company, however rich they are, should use
short-term capital to fund long-term purchases. If the asset you
intend to purchase has a five-year lifespan, finance it over all five
years; this limits your repayment year-on-year and is the financial
equivalent of pay as you earn for capital purchases.
Repayments
Already stated, the amount repayable in each of those years has to be
found and this is where the focus on return on investment is
paramount. We are not huge multinational conglomerates with share
capital sloshing about on the balance sheet. As a result, from the
meagre profits that we generate, we have to insure that we satisfy all
of our obligations and these include such loan repayments.
Over commitment to finance repayment is a sure-fire way of

damaging a business. I have always advocated
that finance repayments should never exceed
25% of cash profits, anything in excess of this
makes me very twitchy I cannot suggest this
as an industry standard but its a yardstick I use.
My choice in my business; your choice in yours.
But here is where the principal can slam into
the buffers. These cash profits cannot be an
accident that is explained by an accountant
after the financial year end. Modern business
performance is planned and measured and
monitored on an on-going basis and adjusted
to the marketplace, rather than blind hope in a

Commercial insurance
covers a host of headings;
property, road risks, public

a myriad of other elements.
Every one of these
elements puts an obligation

Let me ask you, when

May 2012 Aftermarket | www.aftermarketonline.net
AFTER successfully completing a demanding series of hands-on
and written tests against the clock, an elite half dozen auto service
experts have won their way through to the final stages of the
prestigious Top Technician 2012 competition. Having used their
diagnostic skills and knowledge to identify and fix complex faults
on a variety of different vehicles in the semi-finals of the
competition at the Delphi Training Centre in Leamington Spa in
March, these are the select few who will now submit to the
ultimate scrutiny of their professional abilities in the final, day-long
practical tests at the Honda Institute this month.
Lee Collins of Kwik Fit Group, Manchester
Gareth Edwards of Bangor Garage, Aberystwyth
Ainsley McEwan of McEwans Garage, Derby
Rafal Rosielewski of Crewe Volkswagen, Crewe
Andrew West of Erne Valley Autos, Ivybridge, Devon
Dan Wright of Clive Atthowe Tuning, Norwich
The winner of Top Technician 2012 will be announced at the new
Top Technician Live event at Mercedes Benz World on May 18th
and claim a total prize pot worth over 12,000, including a
taxfree cash sum of 2,500.
Top Technician 2012 chief examiner, Ian Gillgrass of the
Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) said; Each year, we have to set
the bar higher because, each year, the entrants to the competition
continue to surprise and impress us with the depth of their
understanding of modern vehicle technologies. In their ability to
diagnose and fix faults first time, every time, they are delivering
exactly what the motoring public demands.
Congratulating the last six technicians to reach the finals of the
competition, Top Technician 2012 project manager Nicola St Clair
said: There will be representatives from all three principal sectors
of the vehicle servicing industry franchised dealers, independent
workshops and fast fit operators challenging for the title. In
business, they are all fiercely competitive and while it will be
exciting to witness the battle and see who will prevail, it is always
the motorist who is ultimately the biggest winner.

TECHNICAL support is an essential service for every drive system
installer and an increasing number of them are benefitting from a
series of technical workshops organised by local motor factors in
association with Gates.
Gates, the world's largest manufacturer of belts and tensioners,
involved over 1,500 mechanics in technical workshops throughout the
EU last year and one of those was Stroud-based mobile mechanic
Giovanni Lagomarsino.
He runs GPL Mobile Autos and attended a workshop last year
arranged by MGM Motor Components. He had been to a previous
Gates technical workshop but was surprised to find that he was one of
the few mechanics there on the night that regularly used a belt
tension-testing device to check the installed tension.
"Everybody else seemed to be twisting the belt in some way or other
to check the tension once they'd fitted it. You soon appreciate the
reasons why you shouldn't," he said. I'd seen a Gates STT-1 at my first
workshop, so I bought one. I always do it by the book."
Ian Gobel, proprietor of FRL Auto Services in Dartmouth, had a
similar experience at a seminar run by Devon-based Barum Auto Parts.
"I was surprised to be the only user but what struck me most was the
extent of the online technical support available and the number of
technical bulletins you could get access to."
The online Gates Technical Bulletins range increases every time a
drive system issue, that is likely to lead to premature drive system
failure, becomes known. This may arise as a result of a part upgrade or
follow a change in the recommended installation procedure by the OE
manufacturer. In many cases, they are developed following an
investigation of a specific drive system failure.
A major benefit is that installers can benefit from the experiences of
others BEFORE the job begins and avoid making the same installation
errors.
Any drive system specialist can check out and use Gates technical
bulletins. You can also sign up to receive Bulletin updates, so that you
will be notified as and when a new one is published.

TASK: Diagnose an emission fault
VEHICLE: Renault Megane 1.6 2005
EMISSIONS seems to be the word on everyones lips at present, from
the development of vehicle power-train systems by the vehicle
manufacturers conforming to legislation, to the testing of gases
emitted from the tailpipe when diagnosing faults. We had the final 24
carry out an emissions task in the semis and it was a challenge to
complete in the twenty minute period.
The Megane was set up with an emission fault which gave a high
lambda value (exceeding 1.10). The vehicle engine was run until it was
at the correct operating temperature and the analyser probe was
inserted into the exhaust tailpipe. The Delphi 300 was connected to
the vehicles system via Bluetooth and had the engine management
system pages loaded.
We had created an air leak after the catalyst. We carefully drilled a
hole in the exhaust as to not create a prominent exhaust blow but
allowed excess oxygen to enter the exhaust and create a high lambda
value.
The techs checked the emissions and should have run the engine at
2,500 rpm to purge the system, which would identify the high lambda
and oxygen levels, then allowed the engine to idle and stabilise to
check the emission levels again.
Under pressure
All the technicians identified the high lambda and oxygen levels and
most viewed the live data and identified that the oxygen signals pre
and post catalyst were operating normally. The post catalyst oxygen
sensor will still switch between zero to one volt but not at the same
frequency as the pre catalyst oxygen sensor. Some technicians asked
the question in regard to the short term fuel trim data, most
identified the fault to a probable air leak, others, an air leak in the
exhaust post the catalyst. One chap got on his back and looked at the
exhaust system to check for an air leak, congratulations to that
technician and sorry about the dirty floor!
All of the six tests were 20 minutes long and put the 24 techs under
pressure. Well done to all who took part and we look forward to the
more intensive tests ahead at Honda.
ANALYSER: The lambda and oxygen levels were running high

THE NEW products from the shelves this month make up a mixed bag of
goods. Weve got new battery smart chargers from Schumacher and
GYS, launched in plenty of time for the next battery season.
There are a number of interesting new hand tools this month. One is a
clever widget from Laser Tools that allows you to set the timing on BMW
V8s. Remember, this engine was used on a number of vehicles including
Range Rovers for a time, so the timing kit could be a worthwhile
investment even if you dont see a lot of Beemers. Theres also a handy
tensioning tool out to save the guesswork in setting the freeplay in the
alternator belts.
It also seems that now is a good time to buy power tools. At least two
of the major players in the direct retail market are holding sales and
there are good prices to be had, especially on compressors and related
air tools.
New references havent been neglected either, with new lines from
Remy and Valeo coming onstream, to say nothing of an entirely new line
of collision repair parts launched this month by Euro Car Parts.

A helping hand with hybrids
You may not have had a vehicle in the workshop with start stop technology yet but
there is no doubt that its just a matter of time. Its the only viable solution to date
where manufacturers can achieve the CO2 emissions demanded by EU legislation while
giving the motorist the range they need.
Replacing the absorbent glass mat (AGM) or enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) will
generate twice the unit revenue and three times the margin of a conventional flooded
lead acid battery but will also require special equipment and trained technicians.
Manbat are working closely with Varta to introduce the Varta Start Stop Support
Package, or VSSP, to workshops, offering the products and tools necessary to work on
these vehicles.

Technical & training
Sharna Russell, a product
manager at parts firm Valeo
Service UK, gives a guide to
the air management system
on diesel vehicles
THE NUMBER of diesel vehicles in Europe has increased dramatically in
recent years, from 15 million in 1996 to 124 million in 2012. As the
latest Euro Emission Standard Regulations come into force, there has
never been a more crucial time to control and reduce the nitrogen oxide
(NOx) emissions these vehicles emit. While all diesel vehicles are
equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, it is important
to ensure its performance is consistently monitored so the system is
operating at its optimum capacity. Failure to do so will lead to an
ineffective and costly air management system, which releases a greater
volume of NOx and can potentially damage the engine. New MOT
changes in 2012 also mean that any engine management lights which
illuminate during a test likely to be caused by a faulty emissions
system will now fail an MOT.
Clean air
One of the most common causes of
system failure lies with the EGR valve.
Located between the exhaust gas
manifold and the intake manifold, the
valve opens a small passageway
between these two manifolds to allow a measured amount of exhaust
gas to flow back into the engine. This component can either be vacuum
or electronically operated, with all modern vehicles generally being the
latter. The vacuum valve was introduced to diesel vehicles in 1993,
controlled by an electro-pneumatic modulator which is run by the
control unit and can only be set in two positions - on and off. This
type of valve does not send any information to the control unit. The
electric valve is slowly replacing the vacuum, comprising a solenoid or
electric motor which can be set in all positions between on and off.
Stuck valve
If this valve is not operating correctly or has failed, the flow of exhaust
gas cannot be controlled and the formation of harmful NOx gases
cannot be stopped. Engine performance and economy are compromised
and the longevity of the engine is limited too. If the vehicle is suffering
from symptoms of rough idling (hesitation when accelerating) where
there will be a loss of power or sometimes even stalling this is a result
of an EGR valve being lodged open. Generally, a faulty air management
system will be obvious through poor engine performance either poor
acceleration or the car surging while driving at a steady speed. There is
also the potential issue that if the vehicles EGR valve is situated after the
EGR cooler, an accumulation of soot can occur, causing the valve and
the cooler to become less efficient. Exhaust gas consists of carbon and
hydrocarbons which forms the soot that can accumulate on the valve.
Due to the new Euro 5 regulation, the latest development on Valeos
EGR valves has become even more complex. Emission regulations are
different for diesel and petrol vehicles but for diesel, the maximum
amount of NOx gases allowed is 0.23g/km. This applies to all new
models from September 2009 and all new vehicles in January 2011. The
firms range of valves now feature an integrated compact cooler to
improve cooling efficiency and a bypass which allows the engine to
quickly reach optimum temperature. As a result, the EGR valve and
cooler are sold together, combined as a module. Due to specific
calibration these cannot be sold separately.
Service interval
It is recommended that the vehicles air management and emission
controls are inspected and tested approximately every 12,000 to 15,000
miles for proper operation. To check an electronic EGR valve, the system
will need to be tested with diagnostic equipment to ensure operation is
within tolerances. On mechanical EGR
valves, testing will need to be with
emission testing equipment. If the
results are outside of the
manufacturers parameters and there
are no other faults with other parts of
the system, the EGR will need to be
replaced.
If the valve has failed completely, it will need replacing as a matter of
urgency. Valeo Service UK recommends an OE standard product is used
to provide the most efficient air management system possible, to
guarantee high levels of performance and to complete compatibility
with the vehicles engine management system.

Release the pressure
A calibrated tyre pressure gauge is available from Tyresure
which measures absolute and not atmospheric pressure.
If your workshop is a few hundred metres above sea level or
your inflating tyres below sea level, atmospheric PSI readings
will not show a true measure of inflation and even changes
in ambient weather can have an effect on recorded pressure,
distorting the measurement by up to 15%. As TPMS sensors
measure in absolute pressure, its vital to inflate tyres to the
same benchmark as it will be impossible to correctly inflate a
tyre otherwise.
The ATEQ gauge will show the same measurement that the tyres internal sensors are
reading. The large LCD display switches between Bar, PSI and Kpa units and a deflation
button enables instant pressure adjustment.

are you getting yours?
Fitting a new catalytic convertor without fitting a new sensor just doesnt add up. A worn
or failed sensor could result in drastically reduced control of the fuelling system which
could result in increased fuel consumption, uneven running, generally poor performance
or failure of an emission test. So why go there? Short term gain, but potentially long term
pain and added expense for your customers.
So do the right thing. New cat, new sensor. Each time, every time.

Component firm Comline has
succeeded in a plan to phase out
paper catalogues and in return, it
has been rewarded with an A
rating by component firm
TecDoc.
The firm developed three
platforms of electronic data,
namely TecDoc for the Continent;
MAM for the UK market and
Comlines own industry leading

platforms are only as good as the
data at source so its a real
honour and a real recognition of

`A` rating by TecDoc, explained

Better placed clutch parts
Until recently, Corteco has listed its clutch guide bushes or
quills among engine part numbers but customers have had
problems finding them among the huge range of seals and
gaskets. These can now be found under clutch friction/fitting.
These components are essential in clutch changes for many
European cars as the clutch guide bushes/quills are designed
to protect the clutch from ingress by gearbox oil. Many
independents have wrongly assumed they are OE only
supply items.

A better driving experience for the Range Rover
Evoque is provided by a new spring kit,
according to suspension manufacturer Cobra.
The kit contains four springs which have been
made to match the OEM dampers and lower the
car by about 35mm. The lower centre of gravity
is said to improve the cars handling but also
gives it a more aggressive road presence.
Springs are pre-fatigued to eliminate sagging
before they are shot-peened for durability. They
feature fully ground ends and are protected by
an anti-corrosion treatment and thick powder
coating. They come with a five year warranty.

A vehicle communication interface
(VCI) diagnostics tool introduced
by Delphi features an OBDII flight
recorder for faster and more
accurate diagnostics. The recorder
logs and extracts all data
parameters when plugged into the
vehicle, including intermittent fault
detection.
A Bluetooth automatic search

connects to the vehicle, although
the option for manual input
remains and a VIN look-up saves
time when beginning a job.
The unit has a built-in light to
help locate the diagnostic socket
and a car battery voltage monitor
to preserve battery life. Delphis
Linked Diagnostics works with the
new tool by connecting the VCI
cable into the universal connector
under the dashboard and will flag

Product manager Sharna Russell said: It is
important to ensure that a vehicles EGR system
is regularly checked to verify that it is operating
at optimum capacity. Otherwise, this could potentially lead to a costly and
ineffective air management system. She continues, EGR valves can accumulate
debris over time and as a result get stuck in the open or closed position, which leads
to a failure of the emissions test. In some instances, the car reverts to safe mode as

to over 70,000 tickets for events across the country and are urged
to use them as a marketing tool to boost business and reward
customers. A range of support material is available to promote the

Ever since it was launched, this promotion has been a huge
success for those workshops that have got behind it, commented
Comma Sales & Marketing Director, Mike Bewsey. Being able to
give something away worth up to 42, with their service work, is a
huge opportunity in these difficult economic times. Even if your

are a friend or family member of theirs will be, so workshops really
have everything to gain by passing this promotion on.

Company warns technicians
to avoid simply replacing
rubber doughnut
IN ORDER to meet the new test criteria concerning the rubber boots on
track rod ends, parts firm Delphi is advising MOT testers and technicians
to replace the entire ball joint component where the rubber boot is split,
cracked, damaged or missing. The new regulation directs testers to fail a
vehicles MOT test if a ball joint boot is missing or no longer prevents the
entry of dirt, water and other damaging substances.
The firm say that if the boot is damaged there is a high probability that
damage to the ball joint may have occurred, indicating the joint is likely
to fail even after the rubber has been replaced.
By replacing the boot only and not the complete ball joint unit, the
new boot could potentially seal in sand or grit into the joint. This can
result in accelerated rust and corrosive damage to the joint. In addition,
the ball joint is designed to operate with a grease lubricant. A defective
boot could lead to a loss of this essential lubrication, as it may be washed
away with water, dry out or become coated with dirt and other debris.
The firm also recommends technicians and MOT testers keep an eye
open for universal rubber boots and associated fitment-cable ties fitted
in order to pass the MOT test. The term universal can be misleading, as
there are many variations of boots used in any given range of steering
and suspension products, with each rubber boot specifically designed and
manufactured for use with its specific ball joint.

are obvious. Imagine having your entire profit wiped out because the AC
pressure had dropped slightly. This is eminently possible too, as the new gas
is made from smaller molecule chains so is more likely to leak from the
tiniest of gaps. With this in mind, is it possible that vehicle manufacturers will
go back to only offering UK models with AC as a pricey extra cost option on
top-end models?
As we look at elsewhere in this feature, there is the frightening prospect
that some might be tempted to buy the gas from cheaper, but probably
illegitimate, sources. The risk of explosion from filling a system with what, in
all probability, will be propane is a horrible prospect.
While this might happen, it will be quite a while in the future. For now, there
are far more cars with R134A on the road than those without. Most of the AC
systems will have mushrooms growing in the vents due to the mild Spring
so there has never been a better time to get into air con servicing.
Swash and wobble
The air con compressor range from Denso comprises 320 OEM specification
references including swash plate, wobble plate and rotating type units, covering the
major European and Asian applications. A further 250 are available, designed to
withstand internal air con system pressure up to 25 bar. All carry Densos authenticity
sticker to confirm its origin and from an authorised UK distributor channel.
Spokesman, Paul Payne, said: DENSO already offers extensive aftermarket ranges
of replacement A/C compressors and condensers as part of our Thermal Systems
programme, which also includes cooling radiators, cooling fans, heater cores,
intercoolers, receiver driers and oil coolers.

Air conditioning
Think F-gas rules are a load
of air? Theres a cost to not
being properly trained
ON THE 4th July 2006, a law was passed requiring all people working
with mobile air conditioning systems containing fluorinated gases
(R134a to you and I) to hold a European approved qualification. Defra,
the Department for Rural Affairs responsible for monitoring the usage
of fluorinated gases informed the motor industry that this F-gas
legislation would not come into effect in the UK until 4th July 2007,
furthermore Defra stated that if certificated training was carried out by
a competent person before the 4th July 2008 then no further training
would be required until 2010! Confused? Well thats hardly surprising,
on the one hand we are told we must qualify all personnel then in the
next breath we are told that in house training is sufficient, only to find
out that actually this was only an interim measure and that now we
need a Defra approved qualification!
So, to clarify, any person working on mobile air conditioning systems
must hold their own Defra approved qualification. This has been the
law since 4th July 2010, you cannot supervise others in your
workplace, you cannot work under training and all technicians must
be individually qualified.
Do it now
I often hear garages and employers say that they will qualify their staff
when they need to or when people start to be fined well people are
being fined now. A source within IMI Awards informed me of a garage
in West London who were fined 20,000 as well as a trading estate in
Somerset where all of the traders were given one week to gain their

qualifications or they too would be fined.
In a report commissioned for Europe, it was reported that there are
less than 43% of the required number of qualified air conditioning
technicians across the European Union. The UK fairs slightly better with
26,656 of the required 50,000 qualified technicians, which equates to
53%.
Simple
Qualification is not hard, challenging or indeed difficult. If you can
understand basic chemistry and rudimentary physics, you will
understand the processes in air conditioning. Training can be provided
at a number of centres across the country or in some cases at your own
premises. You can choose between joining the 6547 Automotive
Technician Accreditation also known as an ATA certificate, or you can
complete a Level 3 Certificate in Refrigerant Handling.
How much does it cost not to be licenced? Well, the fine is 20,000
per person per offence for R134a. It will cost you even more and
possibly a spell in prison if you are still playing with Freon, R12! How
much does it cost to be licenced? This depends on your knowledge and
experience but can be as little as 159 for a one day training course
and assessment. I know which cost I would rather have!
MAPS Technical training is an IMI Awards approved training centre
that provides accredited air conditioning training for technicians in
order to stay on the right side of the law! The course covers Air
Conditioning operating principles, components and operations both
fixed orifice tube and thermal expansion valve. It also covers test
procedures and the reasons why we need to work within the law.
Believe it or not, testing within the law is cheaper, more effective and
safer than the way the majority of garages are currently working.
In summary, Can you afford not to be licenced?, no. Can you
improve your knowledge and profitability through knowing the law?
Possibly. Can you improve your understanding and profitability through
training? Definitely!

gas regulations and training courses, fill in 252 on the enquiry card.
Garages say they will train staff when
people get fined well, fines are being
handed out now
So what do we need F-gas legislation for?
Fluorinated greenhouse gases (F gases) are powerful
greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming if
released into the atmosphere. Their effect can be much
greater than carbon dioxide. R134a for example, has a
global warming potential (GWP) of 1300, meaning that
each gramme of the gas is some 1,300 times more damaging
to the environment than carbon dioxide. The older R12 gas
has a GWP of 7,300 and also causes damage to the ozone
layer. By comparison, R1234yf has a GWP of just four.
HFCs are the most common type of F gases and are mainly
used as the refrigerant in air conditioning and commercial
refrigeration systems. F gases are also used in other areas
such as fire protection systems, solvents, high voltage
switchgear, types of aerosols and in specialised industrial
processes.
As these fluoride gases are very environmentally damaging
it was necessary to introduce a qualification for those that
use it. While the new R1234yf is far better, its still flammable
and eye-wateringly expensive, the requirement to have
certificated AC specialists remains.

Air conditioning
R134a Is
contamination
a problem?
We recently received a letter from a worried reader about the
quality of gas being supplied to workshops. It read as follows:
As one of the UKs top specialists in automotive air conditioning, I am
very concerned that after reading all the first 2012 automotive trade
magazines over the past week or two, no-one has made any comment
about the very serious and dangerous issue raised in the Nuetronics
global press release issued back in December 2011. I can only
presume that the UK trade press have not seen the document yet, so I
have attached a copy for you, along with the BOC SDS for Methyl
Chloride. Mixtures of R134a/R40/R22 have already been found in a/c
systems in military vehicles returning to Germany from Afghanistan,
and reportedly in some passenger cars in Southern Europe.
R134a mixed with R40 in any vehicle a/c system (which is made up of
virtually all aluminium components) is very dangerous and can explode
at any time if there is air or moisture present in the system, including
when it is being recovered with a standard workshop recovery
machine. Engineering company Klimatec and OEM supplier Dometic in
Germany, have managed to find a way to safely recover mixtures
containing R40 by freezing a refrigerant cylinder to minus 40 degrees
centigrade with dry ice, but this is not practical for UK workshops.
What is practical is to use specialist refrigerant identifiers but very few
workshops in the UK have this equipment and no identifiers can
detect R40 as a refrigerant, only as a contaminant such as air, or Non
Condensable Gases (NCGs) but it does mean a contaminant is
present, which should not be the case in a virgin cylinder.
Ideally, we need to ensure this contaminated refrigerant does not
enter the UK but UK workshops buy 13.6Kg cylinders of R134a based
on price alone, so UK distributors are always looking at purchasing
pallets of cylinders at the best price so they can pass on the saving to
the workshop. When you consider you can save 40-50% on
production costs by mixing a very low value and dangerous chemical
with R134a, then labelling the cylinder with a known supplier brand
as pure 100% R134a - whos going to know? Its a recipe for disaster!
Over the next few months, the European Automotive air conditioning
industry will be gearing up for the summer and this will involve
purchasing and reselling tons and tons of R134a. Refrigerant
manufacturers and their distributors should supply a quality assurance
certificate so workshops know what they have purchased is 100%
pure R134a. If workshops are offered much cheaper R134a imported
from Asia (the source of the problem) there could be a very good
reason why it is cheaper then the time bomb begins.
Gary Phillips MIMI
A reader
contacted us
about the
dangers of
fake R134A
but what is
the real risk?
ENSURING into the issue raised by Mr Phillips and discovered
there had indeed been a problem with contaminated R134a used
in a ship. This had caused a fatal explosion but there was
nothing to say that the problem had anything to do with the gas
producers that supply the UK.
However, that is not to say that there isnt any cause for
concern. Fake parts are a problem across the worldwide
aftermarket and it is only because of the way that importers and
distributors work in northern Europe that we have largely kept
them out of the UK. Odourless, colourless but valuable gas
supplied in generic cylinders must be an obvious target.
While we note the press release that caused Mr Philips to
contact us was written by a manufacturer of gas testing
equipment and therefore has a vested interest it is not a bad
idea to test gas cylinders before putting them in use. It is also
worth pointing out that you should only buy gas from suppliers
that you know and trust. In this instance, risking the cheaper
option is potentially lethal.

Lethal germs
Weve all been spluttering like a 1970s
Allegro here at Aftermarket this month,
so it was most alarming to receive a
release from the Good Garage Scheme
warning us that neglected air con
systems can be a fertile breeding
ground for lethal legionella bacteria.
Yikes!
The document listed some research
from the Hannover Medical School,
which showed how important it is to
get rid of this toxic mould and how
concerned the public were once they
were made aware of the risks. In fact,
some 73% of respondents said that
they were going to have their cabin
filters changed and their pipes cleaned
out at the earliest opportunity.
The light at the end of the tunnel is
that the Hannover academy revealed
that once the AC system is in perfect
shape, air coming from the vents can
be as much as 80% cleaner than the
air outside of the window.

Tyrebaylatest:
illegaldumping
THERE WAS a high profile case in the papers recently
where a chap named Carl Steele was caught dumping
tonnes of tyres around Lincolnshire over a two year period.
He operated by undercutting the price of legal tyre disposal
to unwitting local workshops.
His actions cost the local authority and the taxpayer by
extension, more than 500,000 to clear it up, plus the
cost of bringing a prosecution to court. For his trouble,
Steele spent five months in prison and fined a paltry
122.
You dont need a lecture from us on why tyres are bad
for the environment but, besides looking ugly and being a
fire hazard, water is very likely to stagnate in them, turning
them into fertile breeding grounds for mosquitos.
Fortunately, the number of people dumping old casings in
the UK is tiny compared with some other countries but the
point here is that anyone considering buying into the
replacement tyre market should consider where the used
casings are going.
Generally, youd subcontract disposal of these items to
someone with a licence to handle hazardous waste but it
wouldnt hurt to check if said licence is both valid and
genuine. Apart from the obvious environmental damage, if
it turns out that tyres are coming from your workshop
regardless of who was doing the dumping the damage to
your reputation is likely to be worth far more than the
122 fine slapped on Mr Steele.

Carefulhandlingrequired
AS YOULL see elsewhere in this feature one of the most important
things not to do when handling alternators and starters is to drop
them.
It might sound obvious, but the biggest reason by far for returned
units are products that have been damaged by mishandling. It seems
strange that an item that can sit under bonnet for decades in hellish
conditions can be so fragile away from the vehicle but this is
absolutely the case.
When using aftermarket parts, also be sure to check the ampage to
save damaging the unit or the system. With conventional units there is
a little bit of leeway in regards to ampage, however Internal fan and
Smartcharge units need to be carefully checked to ensure a
corresponding ampage. Incorrect ampage can result in damage to
the charging unit or ECU.
Finally, if conventional alternators and starters need careful
handling, then this is even more true of the new-fangled
starternators Away from the car these are apparently rather
delicate, not to mention expensive and very heavy!

Alan Povey from component
firm Denso recaps some basic
points on rotating electrics
ENSURING the correct ampage is key to preventing unnecessary damage
to the unit, or, even worse, the entire system. When replacing the
alternator, be sure to check the ampage of the both the unit being fitted
and the one being removed. With conventional units there is a little bit
of leeway in regards to ampage, however Internal fan and Smartcharge
units need to be carefully checked to ensure a corresponding ampage.
Incorrect ampage can result in damage to the charging unit or ECU.
Alignment and tension
Once the unit is mounted, be sure to check the alignment and tension of
the belt. Apart the usual problems associated with misalignment, over
tension of the belt can also cause structural failure within the alternator
by pulling the bearing across, causing them to wear away quickly
resulting in excessive noise and damage to the vehicle.
When it comes to starter motors, be sure that:
Kilowattage
Starters are, over time, becoming smaller units. This reduction in size
makes it more essential than ever to ensure that you are using the right
kilowattage. In the case of diesel vehicles, fitting a starter motor with a
low kilowatt output (i.e. smaller than the one removed) can cause the
vehicle to not turn over fast enough, resulting in non-starting. The
incorrect kilowattage can also cause problems with other components
within the vehicle.
Vital checks
Before fitting the Starter motor it is vital to check that both the pinion
and drive are correct. Whilst bolting-on, be sure to also check the
alignment is correct. Finally, do not drop the starter motor! One drop
can cause irreparable damage to the internal workings. Always handle
carefully.

Set the

Greg Whitaker
The Editor visits a supplier
of new and reconditioned
turbochargers
WHEN I was very young, my family bought a new washer dryer to
replace our pre-historic Indesit. The new model was festooned with
buttons, lights and Eighties futurism.
However, what fascinated me was the legend on the front that read
Jetsystem and Turbodry. Well, even at that age I knew that a
turbocharger had something to do with exhaust gas, so what could an
electric washing machine possibly be doing with such a device? The
plot thickened when I noticed a Hoover belonging to a friends mum
had Turbosystem written over it and as I started looking for the word
I noticed all kinds of unlikely objects with things like Turbo Power and
Turbo Logic emblazoned on them. There was even a turbo bank
account.
The reason was that the turbo, previously a part designed to give
industrial diesel engines optimal efficiency, gained a near-mythical
status as a device that can bring a rush of power.
These days, turbochargers are not glamorised in the same way.
Indeed, if the general public thinks of them at all now it will most likely
be as part of emissions control. This is a great shame, as any
turbocharger and especially modern variable vane units are the
most exquisitely engineered components on a vehicle.
At one stage, remanufacturing was the core of BTNs business. As
the market has changed to using variable vane turbochargers (which
cant be reliably remanufactured) it is now less fundamental but still an
important part of the business.
To the core
Looking at the boxes of unsorted core, it is obvious that a lot of
demand comes from the industrial and agricultural sectors. Many of
the units are covered in yellow paint a sure sign that they came from
generating sets. Weve covered the reman process on various items a
number of times in these pages, so we wont go into too much detail
about it here, except to say that most of the team in the workshop
have seen many a summer. The years of experience mean that the
turbochargers can be remanufactured to an excellent standard each
and every time.
Return to sender
One of the most fascinating parts of the factory was an area devoted
to warranty returns. All aftermarket distributors have a returns area of
one sort or another, but very few go into much detail about why a part
has failed. However, BTN is an exception. The area resembles a science
lab, as the workbenches are completely clear except for the tools
needed to strip and analyse the turbochargers. As the units are
dismantled, any damage or wear is recorded with a digital camera in a
kind of makeshift photo studio area. As the majority of problems occur
where either there hasnt been sufficient oil or debris has somehow
got into the mechanism, it is fairly easy to show the damage with a
regular camera, but for occasional jobs where the problem isnt so
obvious, pride of place goes on the workbench to a special microscope
that also has the ability to take digital pictures.
Using the evidence, the technician can quickly establish what the
cause of failure was and this information is put into a report. It is
perhaps not surprising to learn that the biggest causes of turbo death
are oil related. Often it is down to starvation due to leaks, blockages,
or neglecting to prime the unit prior to starting the engine for the
first time, or contamination. It goes without saying that when you have
an impellor spinning at speeds up to 250,000rpm, the need for top-
grade, clean oil becomes very important. We are told that the biggest
single reason for a replacement turbo to fail is that the reasons that
caused the original unit to go wrong havent been resolved.
In order to take the speed, heat strain and pressure, turbochargers
have to be manufactured from the finest grade materials and
machined to the tightest tolerances in order to survive. With this in
mind, we were surprised to learn that less than one per cent of
warranty returns actually had a manufacturing defect. Ruining a
turbocharger before the engine has even fired is not most garages
idea of a profitable enterprise, so all units supplied by BTN include a
fitting kit, which comprises of the all-important syringe of oil to prime

On the road
So, why cant you remanufacture
variable vane turbochargers?
Variable vane turbochargers have been
fitted on cars for several years and
some are now in need of replacement.
The answer lies in the variable part.
Variable Vane Turbochargers are set up
in the factory by robots on highly
sophisticated flow benches as the
components are sensitive to
movements of a thousandth of a
millimetre. Once the all-important base
setting has been achieved, the turbo
can then be calibrated for the range of
vane or nozzle positions that will be
dictated by the control unit. Such
precision is only possible at the factory
as there is no practical way of adapting
this type of equipment to work on used
components even if a firm could
justify the investment.
As a way of keeping core out of the
market, some turbo manufacturers now
have an exchange programme for older
variable units. In this instance, the core
must be returned but once received,
the maker will simply scrap it.
the turbine prior to starting the engine.
New turbo chargers
The main business at BTN is supplying
new turbochargers from all of the major
brands to trade customers throughout
the nation. At the firms premises in
West London, the vast majority of space
is given over to a vast and complex
logistics operation where almost all
models of turbocharger are sourced
from all of the manufacturers. All units
are bundled with a free fitting kit,
consisting of some gaskets, bolts and a
syringe of oil for priming the unit prior
to installation.
Turbocharging might not have the
same cachet as it once did but with the
drive to build ever-more parsimonious
cars its going to be more common than
ever. Be sure the techs in your workshop
know about the best way to ensure a
trouble-free installation.

NOT SO long ago, technicians would often debate the merits, or otherwise,
of the various brands of chrome vanadium hand tools on offer. Actually, this
is still the case but you dont need us to tell you that the modern fighting
ground of the tool market has nothing to do with spanners and sockets.
Instead, it is the take-up of scan tools where manufacturers hope to
dominate each other.
Like many products in the computer market, most scan-tool
manufacturers like to create a song and dance about the most fully featured
products in the range but will also offer a line of less expensive items with
fewer features or a more basic interface. The difference between the top-
end and entry level product is often just a matter of software but there is
little point in paying for unneeded features.
Snap-on Diagnostics offers a number of choices, ranging from the entry-
level Microscan code and live data reader up to the Verus line up of PC-form
scan tools. Models in the Solus range sit somewhere in between and it is the
newest, the Solus Ultra, that we are looking here.
First impressions
Perhaps the first point to mention is the screen. Compared with the older
Solus Pro, the newcomer has a screen that is some 60% larger than the
predecessor. Like just about every gadget with a display on sale now, the
new machine features a backlit colour touch screen that can apparently be
used even with gloves on. Unusually, the tool can also be controlled with
hardware buttons so techs making the transition from an older unit wont
find it too unfamiliar. Our tester said that he liked the screen but found it
had an occasional tendency to lock up though it should be noted that he
was using a pre-production model that had been left running overnight. He
noted that the hardware keys did not seem to be affected by this anomaly
and the manufacturer assured us that the problem has been solved on
production models.
Our tech was pleased to find the unit was easy to set up as it was
supplied with a standard 16-pin cable and would work without any
additional personality keys that were required with some earlier versions of
Snap-on scan tools. The tool booted up very quickly compared with other
units in fact, it was ready to use in around 10 seconds. Once up and
running, it takes power from the DLC socket but it can also be charged with
a mains adaptor.
In use
Our tester found the tool had a good amount of coverage for most vehicles
in the parc, although as his workshop had a lot of Subaru cars (the tool
covers nine modes of EOBD but does not have full range coverage), he
advised would-be buyers to check the Solus Ultra covers most of the models
they are likely to see regularly. Finding vehicles on the tool is straightforward
but it lacks a VRM look up. Depth of coverage was noted as quite
reasonable with the ability to graph live data noted as a good feature. The
tool offers a troubleshooter function where you can get help from a
database compiled by other technicians. An interesting and unusual feature
of this tool is that the software updates are supplied by a hardware link from
the Snap-on van. This eliminates the need for physical media such as CDs or
cartridges, but is not as immediate as online updates.
Price
The unit is expected to retail around 2,100. While clearly not a match for
high-end equipment in terms of coverage or features, the price puts it right
in the middle of the mid-range, so to speak. As such, its up against a lot of
competition, not least from its Solus Pro predecessor, which remains on sale.
With its speedy, modern interface and graphing features, the Solus Ultra
looks set to be a completive product in a tough marketplace.

Its all change on the staff fleet
as the Ed moves some cars
ALL HAS not been plain sailing on the fleet here at Aftermarket this
month. First of all, I got a flat battery on the Laguna which was
entirely my own fault and I cant tell you how much of a wally the
Editor of Aftermarket felt calling out the AA because he had left his
lights on. Stupid clock change.
Of course I have jump leads but they were uselessly sitting in the
back of my red Alfa which, in turn, was sitting at John Tinhams
workshop some fifty miles away from the office. The reason it was
there was, following an unsuccessful weekend wrestling with the
driveshafts, I decided that changing the clutch was a job best left to
the professionals. Before I spent too much money on the thing, I
wanted to find out if it had any chance of passing another MOT. It
had exactly one month left to run, so I took it to the garage where
Mr. Tinham duly tested it. Now, I knew there were one or two issues
with the lights for example the O/S indicators appeared to flash far
more dimly than the other side. However, I didnt expect the whole
flaming lot to pack up while it was being tested
John opined that the root of the problem was probably the towbar
that the previous owner had installed (by an Alfa Romeo franchise)
just a couple of months before I bought it. Besides the 18 separate
lighting faults, the car had a couple of feathered tyres and some silly
minor issues (I had forgotten to top up the washer bottle for
example) so not too bad but frankly, Ive had enough of it, so Ive
put it up for sale.
Selling up
Ive also decided to move on my faithful old Laguna, as well as a
Lexus GS300 that my Uncle has foisted upon me. Assuming I sell any
of them, that will just leave me with the black Alfa that I bought last
year to complete a charity run in but do you know what? Im
thinking of selling that too, so if you know anyone that wants a
scruffy-looking hot hatch that is absolutely dripping with new parts
then drop me a line.
As Ive had it with driving my own cars, I decided to try some
belonging to other people. First of all, Fiat kindly loaned me a 500
TwinAir convertible for a few days. Now, this wasnt the most
emasculating experience in the motoring world but I did very much
enjoy the buzzy, turbocharged two-cylinder engine. Apart from the
engine note, which was reminiscent of a chainsaw attacking a hive
of unusually vocal bees, there was nothing to suggest that you are
driving a car displacing just 875cc.
I dont know if it was just my flat-footed driving style but I
struggled to get anywhere near the quoted 68mpg figure. In fact, I
think it was probably around half of that. Everything else on the car I
liked immensely especially the blue and me telemetry and the
one-shot electric roof mechanism. However, the electric power
steering was not the best. It felt slightly sloppy, like the nagging
feeling you get when balljoints are wearing.
Scale up
At the other end of the scale, Jaguar Land-Rover invited me up to
Gaydon to try out some of its products. Ive never been a fan of the
centuries-old Defender (though I did drive one while I was there) but
the current Range-Rover line up is as good as youll find anywhere
a point proved as I was let loose on the factorys off-road course.
Given the fun I had driving these new cars has given me the urge
to upgrade to something a little more modern but what will it be?
Ill let you know next month.

Ask Arthur
Strange case
of the stuck
silk scarf
Dear Arthur, we are an MOT
testing station and we test for a
number of local independent
garages. Two months ago, we had
a Mercedes from one of them in
for its first MOT.
I was surprised to receive a
phone call from the owner of the
car who basically had a go at me
down the phone for trapping a silk
scarf in the seat belt buckle. The
next day she arrived at my door
demanding I remove the scarf,
which I did in about three
seconds. She examined the scarf
and said there's a hole in it and
wants to know what we are going
to do about it.
After she left promising that the
matter would be going further, I
await for the next installment. How
do I stand on this? Am I liable? She
isnt even a customer of mine!
Arthur says:
Personally, I don't think you are
liable. In fact, I would suggest that
offering to replace it might open
up another can of worms with this
difficult customer. The main issue
here is the time lapse between the
incident and her raising the issue.
Had she come back the following
day you might need to discuss
compensation but two months on
is entirely unreasonable.

Our resident garage mechanic (and his
lawyer) dish out more sage advice
concerning contract and employment
law as well as customer liability
DEAR
ARTHUR...
Dear Arthur, I have as many technicians in my
workshop as I need and can afford but I have
recently helped out my sister-in-law by taking
on her 17yr old son as a type of intern.
Although he does go into the workshop, I
mainly plan to have him on front of house
duties to get a better feel of actually running
a business. He plans to stay until he goes to
Uni in 2013 but what is the situation
regarding a contract and do I have to pay
him the full minimum wage?
Arthurs lawyer answers:
There are several points to this. Firstly, is
he an employee or a volunteer wanting
work experience? If he is seeking work
experience you do not need to pay him,
although you would need to show that the
work experience is at least vaguely relevant
to his proposed University course. Also,
bearing in mind that he plans to stay until
autumn 2013, you would not be able to treat it
as work experience for the whole duration.
Secondly when did he start? If it was before April 6th 2012 he will acquire full employment rights
after one year of employment however, if he started after this date, he would need two years service to
qualify. This is important given the length of time that he may be with you.
The minimum wage for 16/17 year olds is 3.68 per hour and when he becomes 18, this rises to
4.98 per hour. Normally these rates increase in October but this year they wont, to encourage
employers to recruit younger workers.
Calling him an intern has no legal meaning and the best legal option is give him a contract and to pay
him at the rates mentioned above which will not incur any employers National Insurance contributions as
he will be below the earnings limit.

MRS P doesnt visit the workshop very often but
when she does, its not unlike being a stop on the
Queens Jubilee tour. Technicians bow in deference
and even the mouthy and idle oik in the tyre bay
tugs his gel-fringed forelocks as she sweeps in.
Well, thats how she would like it to be and
generally, when shes happy then I am too, or at
least, less miserable. Given that Id recently fired my
useless accountant, Mrs P took it upon herself to
look at the mess youve made of the bookkeeping
stuff.
This I knew was going to create all sorts of
problems. Not only does my office consist of
teetering piles of paper I havent had a chance to
sort through, but the workshop itself looks
absolutely bloody terrible. Looking at the ramp bays
with cold, objective eyes, I realised that while the
floor occasionally gets a sweep through with a
broom, the walls bore the evidence of never having
had a proper clean. The walls were caked in a
mixture of baked-on grime and pin-ups dating back
to Farrah Fawcett.
Spring clean
My first thought was to get someone in to clean the
place up, then I thought, why am I paying that gel-
fringed idiot to stand around, winding up the
technicians when he could be doing something
useful? So, I rented one of those industrial steam
cleaners the sort that looks like a carwash broom
crossed with an old-fashioned vacuum cleaner. I also
borrowed a small scaffold tower (elf and safety you
see) and set him to it, while I busied myself trying to
put the filing into some semblance of order.
Theres an old saying about what you shouldnt let
an idiot do and this is no exception. Relishing his
new power over the other technicians, the gel-
fringed one took it upon himself to start steaming
some of them. When they quite rightly admonished
him, he carried on clowning around and for some
reason, started pretending to wash a car that had
just pulled in with his steaming new toy. This would
have wound up even the most placid of customers
but it turned out to be Mrs. P who had just arrived.
On the receiving end
The hilarity of the Nora Batty-esque chase around
the workshop, watching the oik being abused by my
wife with the lance of a steam cleaner, was
tempered only by the glower in her eyes, which I
knew was reserved for me. Once the appliance had
been deemed to have caused an acceptable amount
of pain, she came over to the office and demanded
she have some time alone with that bloody mess
that should have been put onto a computer years
ago. Shes still there, in fact, while I try to ignore the
jibes from my own staff as I finish steam-cleaning
the walls.
Mind you, I havent heard a peep for hours
from that mouthy gel-fringed oik. Strangely, he
decided it would be best if he kept quiet for the rest
of the afternoon.
