Canadian and American Catholics Call for a More Liberal Pope


Majorities of Catholics in the two countries would like to see changes that would allow priests to get married, and women to be ordained.
[NEW YORK Mar. 11, 2013] - Catholics in Canada and the United States believe the next pontiff should be ready to take a more modern stance on specific issues, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found. In the online survey of representative samples of Catholic respondents in the two countries, 62 per cent of Canadian Catholics who attend church once a weekand 52 per cent of their American counterpartsthink the next pontiff should allow women to be ordained.

Canadians Catholics are more likely to call for a very liberal or liberal pontiff (60% of those who attend church once a week, 69% of those who attend church less often) than their American counterparts (47% of those who attend church once a week, 51% of those who attend church less often). Catholics who attend church less often than once a week would like to see the new pontiff take a more liberal approach to issues like contraception and birth control (CAN 77%, USA 59%), divorce (CAN 59%, USA 47%), and same-sex relations (CAN 56%, USA 40%). On the topic of euthanasia and doctorassisted suicide, Canadians (48%) are more likely to call for a more liberal approach than Americans (29%).

Canadian and American Catholics who attend Church at least once a week are roughly on the same page on contraception and divorce, but considerably fewer would endorse a more liberal approach on samesex relations and euthanasia. Less than one-in-five Catholics in the two countries believe that sexual abuse by priests happened in the past and is no longer a problem. A majority of respondents in the four sample groups think sexual abuse by priests continues to occur, and remains a problem The Last Two Pontiffs More than three-in-four Catholics in the two countries say they were surprised when Benedict XVI announced he would step down. Catholics in Canada and the United States are practically universal in their assessment of the papacy of John Paul II, with 94 per cent of those who attend church once a week deeming him a very good or good pontiff, and 87 per cent of those who attend church less often feeling the same way. The rating is slightly lower for Benedict XVI among Catholics who attend church once a week (78% in Canada, 83% in the U.S.) and those who attend church less often (59% in Canada, 67% in the U.S.). One third of all Catholics in the United States (33%) would like to see a pontiff from The Americas emerge from the conclave, a view shared by 44 per cent of Canadian Catholics who attend church once a week, and 51 per cent of Canadian Catholics who attend church less often. Most Catholics in the two countries believe the next Pope should be aged 54 to 64.
