Read and understand the instructions in the table below. Write the dialogue based on the given instructions.

Michael is a career counsellor in a local university. Hassan, he is an undergraduate student, come to him for advice. Read the instructions given and write the dialogue.
Michael Your task is to interview students and advise them on finding a job. Hassan comes to your office. You greet him; ask him his name, his age, the subjects that he is studying, his major subject, and his home town. You ask him if he would prefer to work there, or work anywhere. Then you ask if he would prefer to work in a large company or in industry or in banking. You tell him you will arrange some interviews for him with some banks. You ask Hassan whether he has any other questions. End conversation. Hassan You are in your final year of study. Your subject in Business and Commerce, and you has done two courses in Accountancy. You come from (name of the home town). You prefer to work in a well-known bank where there are chances of promotion. You thank the counsellor for arranging some interviews. You forwarded two other questions to Michael to gather more information on career development before the end of the conversation.

Michael :

Hello, please have a seat and make you comfortable. Im sure you came for career counselling and thats what Im here for. To start things off, why dont

Hassan : Michael : Hassan : Michael :

you tell me your name? Im Michael Sanders. Im Hassan bin Nek Mat, from Business and Commerce. Please to meet you Mr. Sanders. Well, Encik Hassan, how old are you now? Im 25 this year. Well, youre still young then, and Im sure this will be a big decision for you. For a start, Id like to know what your Major is, and what are subjects you are

Hassan :

taking? Im Majoring in Accountancy; Im taking two courses of them. My other subjects include . I have my curriculum vitae right here, if you need them. I believe that you

Michael :

requested that one is made available? Yes, I did. Very well, it certainly simplifies matters a lot, and you have come prepared, which is a very good thing when attending your future interview. Hmm It seems like with those credentials, you have plenty of opportunities and scope to choose from. Would you like to work in a large company, in an industry, or in banking? All these sectors are all accountancy related, so it

Hassan :

should not be a problem to locate one for you. Actually Ive given it some thought, and Id prefer the banking sector, as it seems to be one of the most stable as a career.

Michael :

Actually, other sectors are just as stable especially for established companies and industries, but indeed banks are less likely to have ups and downs like the private sectors. However, its also important to know which sector you would like to pursue, as a career in a sector you dont find attractive will not be a good lifelong career choice. You could switch careers if this is so, but it

would be a waste of time and resources on your part, which is why Im here to counsel you on your future career. Have you given any other thoughts on why Hassan : Michael : Hassan : Michael : you wish to venture into the banking sector rather than the others? Yes, I have, and I think that the banking sector is a rewarding career to get into, and with possibility of promotions as I mature in my career. Thats good then. Id arrange some interviews for you with some prospective employers as soon as I get more details from you. Where is your hometown? Im from Tanah Merah. I live at the outskirts, at Taman Chat Rimau. Well, thats very much near the town, isnt it? and there are a lot of banks there as well. It shouldnt be much of a problem to locate a vacancy there, but would it be a problem if there was a better offer elsewhere? Or should I Hassan : localise it to places near your hometown? Actually I dont mind working elsewhere, as it is my parents home, and I have no problems with being independent and staying somewhere thats close to my workplace. But if given the choice, if the salary offer is better, I will not Michael : hesitate to work away from my hometown. That is a good view, and certainly shows a better horizon in terms of getting a good job in the banking sector, as occasional personnel reshuffle may require you to move from a certain branch to another. Hassan : Michael : I understand. I certainly have expected it. Excellent. It is good to have a graduate that has a clear idea of his goals and the concessions he may have to make in the working environment. Have you Hassan : had any work experience? Yes, I have. I have worked at small trading companies before, handling bookkeeping as a part time job just after my STPM. As such, managing accounts on a small scale is quite familiar to me. I also have worked in an accountant firm, although for just a while for exposure and experience before enrolling in Michael : this university. Hmm. That is a good bit of experience you should include in your curriculum vitae. Its not in the curriculum vitae you handed to me earlier. It certainly

would lend more credence to your abilities to your prospective employers. An employer would be more likely to choose an experienced worker than a fresh graduate because they believe that an experience worker has been exposed to the working environment, and likely to know a little more than someone that Hassan : Michael : just graduated without any working experience. Thank you, I will do that. Please submit to me your revised curriculum vitae as soon as possible so I can arrange some interviews for you. Hassan : Do you have any other questions? Thank you, Ill hand them over as soon as I have them revised. As to the question. Yes, I do. Firstly, Id like to know what the possibilities of career development are in the banking sector.

Michael :

The banking sector has many departments under them, and depending on your abilities and aptitude, the promotion may allocate you to a different department from the original one you worked in. Well, this is something you will experience yourself. Although it may seem clear-cut, but there is always office politics that may play a part in terms of getting promotions. Although performance evaluations are done, ultimately the person or persons who are doing the evaluation is human, and so you will need to understand and perhaps use your social capabilities in order to progress in your career. However, since you have had some working experience, Im sure you have a bit of experience on this already. Do you work well with your previous co-

Hassan : Michael :

workers or colleagues? Yes, I have. I have no problems with socializing and working at my previous workplaces. Then there is not much concern for you then, apart from needing to meet and

Hassan :

exceed your employers expectations. In that case, what should I do if my career development is hampered by other factors outside my control, for example, a recent merger, or being stepped

Michael :

over for a promotion that I deserve? As a career counsellor, I do not advocate job hopping as it may give the impression of an uncertain job seeker or a troublesome employee when you attend your next interview. But in cases you mentioned, sometimes it is a good choice to switch employers when you find that your career development is hampered by various factors that you cannot control.

Hassan : Michael : Hassan :

Thank you very much, Mr. Sanders, you have been very helpful. I will revise my curriculum vitae and hand them to you as soon as possible. Youre welcome, Encik Hassan. Im just doing my job, and I wish you all the best in your future career. I wish you the same, Mr. Sanders.

*note: The honorifics Encik and Mr. requires different parts of the names to be used. For the former, the first name is provided and used, but for the latter, it requires the use of the last name which was not provided, hence I provided my own fabricated last name.
