For those of us who have lived many years in Chatham, we have come to appreciate and respect the middle-class legacy of the original African-American pioneers who first settle in this community since 1950. LLately, we have been very dismayed with the reporting of crime incidents that are often mislabeled as Chatham..m Its happening with more frequency not only in regular printed media like newspapers, but also in reports via Internet sites. Recently, a horrific double-murder took place on the 8100 block of S. Maryland where a mother and daughter were killed and their apartment set on fire. A website called DNAinfo.com Chicago, that attempts to feature Chicago area neighborhood, or community news reported this crime as being located in Chatham. The Chicago Tribunes RedEye newsmagazine also said the murder happened in Chatham. As many of us know, that address is not located in Chatham, as we know it. Chatham boundaries start at 79th street (some say 78th street) to E. 87th street, from State St. to Cottage Grove. Maryland is located east of Cottage Grove in Alderman Michelle Harris 8th ward. Moreover, that area has always been called Avalon. Forget the police districts! GCA wants to start first with these two media outlets and hold them accountable for mislabeling an area or address as Chatham. We need YOU to call DNAChicago at: 312.508.4686 (ask for the editor) and the Redeye Newsroom at 312.222.4970. We need you to inform them of our boundaries (see above). Quite frankly, we are tired of this! By attributing these types of crimes to our community, it scares off potential new homebuyers, new businesses locating here and business representatives wanting to service our area. Even cab drivers will be afraid! We need YOU TO MAKE THAT CALL ASAP! WE NEED YOU TO STAND UP FOR OUR COMMUNITY!

This play How Long Will I Cry? is a call to action for all of us to join together in search of a solution t o t h e p r o b l e m s o f y o u t h vi ol e n c e a n d i n t o l e r a n c e f aci n g o u r ci t y. T h e f u ll - l e n g t h p r o f e s s i o n a l Steppenwolf Theatre Company play production will be presented at:

Whitney Young Library, 79th & King Dr. Thursday, March 14th at 5 pm
This program offers not only the chance to see the production, but also to participate in a post- show workshop allowing the audience to explore the issues highlighted in the play.

The play is appropriate for 7th to 12th grade students, as well as adults.

Chicago Police & Firefighter (High School) Academy Class of 2015 is open to new applications until April 30th!
The Chicago Police and Firefighter Training Academy (CPFTA) program provides training for students interested in careers in public safety, law enforcement, criminal justice, and fire science. The two (2) year program was developed jointly by the Chicago Public Schools Department of Career and Technical Education (CTE), the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the Chicago Fire Department (CFD), and the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC). The program recruits and trains up to 250 public and non-public high school students each year. One of the immediate goals is to provide a pool of qualified applicants for the citys police and fire academies. The CPFTA program fulfills the two career education or elective credits that all CPS high school students need in order to graduate. The CPFTA curriculum allows j juniors and seniors who are city residents to progress seamlessly from high school directly into any City College of Chicago to complete their Associates degree. In addition to high school and college training, students have the opportunity to participate in a paid summer internship between junior and senior year to promote a better understanding of all aspects of careers in public safety. After completion of the two years in high school and two years at a city college, students will have met the minimum educational requirements to take the Chicago Police and Fire Department examinations for entry into their respective academies.

The Senior Life Enrichment Guide

The winter issue of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Service's (DFSS) Senior Life Enrichment Guide is now available at the DFSS office, at the department's regional and satellite senior centers, libraries and many other locations. . Inside this guide, seniors will find information about h ealth and w ell n ess, e d ucati onal, r ecr e a ti o nal an d many oth e r typ e s of events, trips, classes and lectures, along with schedules and registration details Most of these are FREE or at a nominal cost. This issue also highlights wellness programs at DFSS senior centers throughout the city, and includes a special section on how to avoid Medicare and medical equipment marketing scams.
