Forty-year-old Fiona Clarke of Fairfield is facing criminal mischief and breach of peace charges. Police say she denies leaving feces at the Norwalk womans home. Authorities say Clarke took care of the woman but was laid off by the family last month after declining to work extra hours. Police say one of the womans relatives turned on the stove and noticed a foul smell, then opened the stove and found feces wrapped in a paper towel. Feces also was found in the refrigerator. Incessantly scouring the universe for the weird, the wacky, and the stupid so you dont have to. Greetings, and thanks for joining me for another week. First, only three days after being told their hamburgers may in fact be donkey or water buffalo, South African meat lovers learned that biltong, the fabled dried-meat snack, may not be as wild as many packets suggest. Acting on a hunch - and four years before Europes horse meat scandal broke - researchers at the University of the Western Cape tested 146 biltong samples across South Africa. All packets labeled beef were found to be correct but 90 percent of biltong sticks supposedly made of kudu - a large, curly-horned antelope were actually horse, pork, beef, giraffe or even kangaroo. It started with curiosity and suspicion because one piece of dried meat looks like another, researcher Maria Eugenia DAmato from the universitys DNA Forensics Lab told Reuters. Zebra biltong was found to contain meat from the mountain zebra, a species threatened with extinction. Biltong, air-dried strips of meat made from wild game or animals reared on the countrys 10,000-plus wildlife farms, is staple fare for South Africans, who regard it as a healthy, low-fat snack. Research released this week found that donkey, water buffalo and other unconventional ingredients had been found in almost two-thirds

What you looking at? Weasels, by their very nature, keep themselves scarce. Most of them are either most active after dark, or, as in the case of the otter, are active at first light of morning. While the term "ermine" is often used to describe either the short-tailed or the long-tailed weasel in their winter-white fur phase, it is the short-tailed that is actually called an ermine yearround. - This photo came from one of our readers and taken in Benton, NH.

wind picked up and flecks of snow were driven at us by the wind. I made the decision to return the way we came and take a detour. Instead of heading up Black Cap, we headed for the Peaked Mountain Middle Mountain loop, a favorite of ours. Usually, however, when we do this hike, its under pleasant conditions and we linger on either of the summits and have even been known to take a languid nap on the quieter of the peaks. But with a storm rolling across the sky there would be no napping. Instead, this simplest of hikes had a different feel to it than it ever did before. There was an urgency, an electricity derived from the dropping temps, the sideways snow, the way the clouds rolled across the valley and swallowed whole the higher peaks, leaving us looking through the trees into a ghostly abyss. Now let me tell you, being on a mountain during a storm can feel like a lonely place. Its isolating and it can play tricks on your mind. We were only two miles from our car but it may as well have been ten. Thats how different the atmosphere was. And yet we pushed on, continuing to climb to the top of Peaked Mountain. It was not a fullfledge storm yet and down in the valley the predictions were for only one to three inches, but this had the feeling of a mountaintop storm. Wind. Snow. Cold.

The Adventures of Tom & Atticus

Saturday started out pleasantly warm for the beginning of March, that is with a resplendent blue sky standing watch over all the mountains. But since it was Saturday we decided to wait out the crowded hours on the trails and didnt start out until mid-afternoon. By that time nearly everyone was off the mountain and on our way into the woods we only ran into a handful of stragglers.

Atticus on Peaked Mountain as a storm rolls in.

And thats why we climb it. Its not just one thing, its all of those things put together. Climb a good mountain, have a great experience, and you can feed off it for days or months or years to come. Even days later I feel us up there on those little peaks, watching mountain after mountain disappear in the fog as it approached us and feeling that great warm call of home whispering to us. And those blue skies from earlier in the day started to fade to become a flat overcast of gray. Not to matter, though, for it was well worth trading the blue for the solitude of the late hour. The original plan was to head up Black Cap from the valley, an 8.8 mile round trip but by the time we were just under two miles into the hike the storm predicted to come in that evening was already making those skies The winter before we first started all the more foreboding. Just My Opinion... ~BEF At issue: In the ramp-up to "ObamaCare," several Republican governors announced they would reject attendant expansions of Medicaid, a government-run health plan for the poor, in their states. Now some of them -- in particular, Governor Rick Scott of Florida -- are changing their tune, so long as the program is administered through the offices of "private" insurance companies. Krugman has it exactly right: The point of "privatizing" Medicaid isn't to cut costs, it's to funnel money from taxpayers' pockets into the bank accounts of powerful, privileged, politically connected companies. Where Krugman goes off the rails is in conflating the politically defined American "private sector" with free markets. Modern American capitalism, especially in the area of health care, is largely an exercise in halfbaked socialism. The half that's baked is the risks, which are socialized. The profits, well, not so much. While most industries benefit from state privilege to one degree or another, health care companies in particular are the equivalent of mafia "made men." They're untouchable. They get anything they want from the government, from licensing rackets and medical school quotas to depress the supply of doctors, to state-granted monopolies not just on the production of particular medicines but on the definitions of medicine itself (can it be grown on your window sill? -not medicine, and if we see it you're going to jail) to protection from lawsuits by customers who don't get what they pay for (Republican President Richard M. Nixon and Democratic Senator Edward M. Kennedy set that little gem in the ring of the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973).

Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, The Just Live by Faith, Romans 1:16-17 says, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Are you ashamed of the Bible? Do you believe as Paul believed? Will you proclaim the whole Bible or just the parts you want to? There is a great deal in the gospel which such a man as Paul might be tempted to be ashamed of, especially that he whose gospel it is was a man hanged upon a tree, yet Paul was not ashamed to own it. I reckon him a Christian indeed that is neither ashamed of the gospel nor a shame to it. We cannot take the Bible apart. It is the whole Counsel of the Word, or none at all. Acts20:27, For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Have you read your Bible today? God love you all

Esselstyn grew up on a cattle farm, but their search for what makes people well superseded preconceived notions about diet.

It is interesting how the clocks ticking smoothly fades into the background as one would expect - as conversation, dishes, or the stacking of wood dominate my thoughts. Even in the course of silent acts such as reading, writing, or watching the fire, the tick-tock seems to ebb and flow of its own accord. At times, it is a metronome, the statement of a second: loud, overbearing, undeniable. Yet just as my comprehension of a passing moment seems to peak with over-awareness, the clocks steady rhythm easily fades, allowing other thoughts and observations to pass through my mind. Surely this could be a fascinating study of human perception and sensory experience. Yet for us, through our daily acts in which moments become hours become days - this dear wind-up clock persists as a reminder of time and its fleeting nature. It is not, mind you, a dire warning, nor a vocal reprimand. Rather it is a pleasant call to be present, a call to regain momentary cognizance. It is so easy for time to come and go so much can pass by without our care nor intention! What are these moments worth, and how best to spend them? Well, each day we must wind the clock. Each day we must recalibrate its overeager hands, slow it down to the present time. And each day, we prize this subtle, at times sub-conscious, reminder of the moments we are fortunate to have.
