ChillersaresizedonthetotalCooling load(orRefrigerationload)forthebuildingorthatpartofthebuildingbeing cooledbythechiller. Cooling loadisthesumofsensible and latent heat gains, fresh heat gain, supply fan power heat gain, supply duct heat gain, return air fan power heat gain, return air duct gain. Whenusingwaterchillersasmallallowanceforpumppowerandheatgainstochilledwaterpipesisadded,thisallowance maybe1%to2%. Whenusingfancoilunitsfanpowermaybeadded. Thereturnairductgainsareusuallynegligible. ThesensibleandlatentheatgainsaredealtwithinHeatGainsnotesintheAirConditioningsection. ThelargestCooling loadusuallyoccursat15.00hoursinJuly. Another way to find the total chiller output is to add the output of all chilled water cooling coils together. Theheatgainsmaybederivedfromapsychrometricchartasshownbelow.
